Thanks to one of the viewers I need to correct a mistake!
The phrase from the Tigran example is 10 beats long and not 12! My bad.
It does start on the 1+ as shown, but the phrase is 10 beats long.
Thanks lulu hono!
Yes I want to marry you Yogev!!!
DON'T JUST SAY THINGS LIKE THAATTTTT
יאללה בוא חומוס

awesome and well made, thank you! :)
Beautiful content bro. Much love
Much appreciated!
That Shakti hoodie
Just saw one of your performances in an ad --- DOPE AF!!! 🤘😣
I was watching your "Full Throttle Tribe" video and it made me think of another Pain Of Salvation song: "Fandango" from their 2002 "Remedy Lane" album. I'm not sure it warrants a whole video on its own, but maybe you could combine it with a similar concept from another song. The whole song is in 5/4 but with interesting accents instrumental arrangements that give it an uneasy feeling. Then when the chorus hits, the drums keep the 5 on the crash, but the vocals, instruments and bass drum go into a 4 over 5 polyrhythm which gives it a really interesting feel that I haven't really heard in many other songs.
Keep up the awesome content!!
Will check!
Dat cucumber crunch tho.. Only in Israel kaparaaaa
this is extremely cool and i will definitely be using this in compositions
PLEASE DO AND PLEASE SEND THEM OVER !!
awesome content my friend!!! here in Brazil we don't have access to this knowledge easily!! thanks for your Job!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video, thank you!
incredible video
I'm definitely getting a better appreciation for Hindustani Classical! Thanks so much! I love to listen to it, but I just don't have the technical background like I do with Western Classical. Just these two parts have really helped a lot, though :)
I just love that modern digital technology lets you staple together 2 smaller keyboards to make a full-sized one!
Bro nice edit. Also very cool content!! Share more indian stuff :D
Such great content! I have shared this with my peers in the music department in hopes they send students to your channel.
Awesome! Thank you!
Where do you teach?
@@YogevGabay At a community college in Alabama. Not sure they go this far afield with rhythmic theory, but the content is so good I had to share it.
@@clubgrubbug Well, if this COVID thing ever ends, I'll let you know when I'm back in the states and in Alabama!
@@YogevGabay We would love to host you!
Very useful.
Hey Yogev, I just want to express even more gratitude for the work you're doing on this channel! Excellent tihai examples (and beautiful chakradar choice).
But--and I am so sorry, Yogev--I'm here to be a nuisance again, like on your last tihai vid! I'm very confused by your first example. That first tihai feels like this:
dha ti DHA s s dha ti DHA s s dha ti DHA
1 + a 2 + a 3 + a 4 + a 1
Really really forgive me for trying to align beat counts in UA-cam comment text. I was taught the tihai phrase would be "dha ti DHA" with that final "DHA" as part of the tihai, not part of the gap, so maybe we just have different names for the same thing. For example, Mrinal Pal gives the formula in Step-by-Step Development of Tabla Compositions for a simple tihai as P*3 + G*2 = Length + 1. The length variable just accounts for the time sig/subdivision part of your calc.
I also have a farmaishi tihai formula laying around somewhere for ultimate rhythmic insanity, but those involve more brute force for the numbers than the elegance of the tihais you have here or even a simple chakradar calc!
Side question: was that killer tihai for "Buffer Zone" inspired by the opening tihai from Zakir Hussain's Essence of Rhythm on Tal Posta? So perfect!
Yo! You're absolutely right. The gap IS A PART OF THE PHRASE! and the breakdown you wrote for the tihai is correct!
Totally spellbounded by your presentation!! In addition to that , there is an equation from which you can make tihai by altering starting beat, how much gap between phrases,double/triple/half ... Any beat and in any rhythmic cycle! You don't need that calculator😀
Yeah I think I saw it once!
I have a minor niggle with the example from 'double faced'. Generally the third repetition's last note lands on the 1. Here, the phrase ends just before 1 and an additional note marks the 1.
Also, just throwing the following out there:
The most interesting tihai variant I've learnt is called a Kamali chakradhar. It's a tihai where each of the three parts is a mini-tihai with 9 'dha's ('emphasised' or 'heavy' notes. A regular tihai frequently has a 'dha' ending each part). The first part's first dha is on the first beat of a cycle, the second one's 5th dha is on the first beat of the cycle and finally the last beat's 9th dha is on the first beat of the cycle! Absolutely stunning. I would provide an example but it'll be super hard to write it in a youtube comment.
Hi! So yeah tigran example does end before, but that's just an example of a tihai with NO GAPA like: ,TaDiKiNaTumTaDiKiNaTumTaDiKiNaTum TA.
Makes sense?
@@YogevGabay yes, makes sense. Guess I'll listen to the track again.
One more thing though 😅. It's a useful trick to add some non repeating phrase before starting the 3-pattern if that doesn't need to start on 1. That way the entire piece always starts on 1 always and it's easier to implement.
@@YogevGabay also before I forget, love your work on the berklee Indian ensemble! Amazing stuff and looking forward to more!
@@pushkar28 true!
@@pushkar28 Thanks !
So I guess the beat the last example starts on is ... yes? Yes makes sense.
Nailed it.
very interesting channel)) can you please make some video about math rock (for example American Football - Never Meant, Covet - shibuya ) etc
👌🏻
There is something that doesn't seem clear to me : the "gaps" in the tihais (version 2) can be filled with rythmical content or they have to be a rest, like a pause in the rhythm?
Then it would be just a regular tihai without a gap but the third phrase would be cut short.
Unless the rhythmic content is different for both gaps, then maybe its no longer a tihai. (I don't know how strict the definition of a tihai is).
Either way, I think they can both be interesting compositional ideas.
The gap is usually some kind of stop, that would make sense when it hits 1. It's very musical when you think about it, you get a phrase that has a built in accent in it (the gap) and it collides with beat 1 at the end.
Ok, it makes sense ! Indeed it's a very interesting way to find some New rhythmical tricks, thanks you (-:
Just found your channel, this is great!! Question, though, if you have time b'dum-csh: isn't the time signature superfluous - at least for your "calculator"? Couldn't the tihai create it's own metric organization in contrast to what comes before and after? I suspect this might change in proximity to particular Indian traditional practice, but your examples are pretty expansive, so is there a reason this generalized practice wouldn't allow a contrasting meter? Thanks
I think its because the results of the "calculator" are shown in relation to the bar, so it is important to know how big the bar is to fit the phrases
YEEESSS MOOOAAARRR
Can you do a video on konnakol?
Please explain some DT songs (not Dance of Eternity cause its impossible)
I'll buy a calculator like that!!
hi~ i have a question about the EG., (phrase:12 beats, no gap, 4/4, 16th notes), as i calculate, 12*3=36 beats, and 4/4 16th notes = only 16 beats per bar? but how to get start from 3 ??? thanks!!
sorry how to get start from 1+???? i cannot understand
@@luluhono2266 Oh! You're right I did a mistake!!!!
It's 10 beats not 12!!!! Good catch !
@@YogevGabay thank you! i really love your channel very much! Almost every video i watched and think haha~ it really help me a lot to understand rhythm, and i will use the technique to make my songs better ( really love polyrhythm )
Is the "I am the wave, I am the wave..." part on Hollow by Distorted Harmony a tihai?
It repeats twice no? wow that's an old song I love that one
Where can I get a tihai GPS calculator?
Sorry it's only for married people.
And me.
Did she say yes though?
there tukras --seperate comp. in tintal 16 beats..there isnt a tehai.. greetings.... nice videos
