Never expected to see Odd elegy on this channel! This is the song that introduced me to Tigrans music since he plays on the live version. Loved the vid!
One important aspect, at least with Dhafer's music, is the use of space, timbr & atmosphere, and overall modal context. There's a tendency with musicians that work with such complex rhythmic structures to cram everything in: oh, we've got this 29/32 meter filled with diminshed augmented suspended 7th locrian juju. No. Rather than that Dhafer focuses on melody, on timbre + really working in thath fusion of jazz and the ethnic elements of his music. He is creating a sound world that happens to have some very interesting rhythmic particularities and knows how to balance said complex elements with space and room to breathe. The guy who said ”you also have to play (/groove/feel/etc.) the rests” really had it figured out! Cheers!
Umm, did Yogev just casually chop the same pulse into 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 beat intervals perfectly like it was no biggie? And then talk about how great the other musicians are? What a total badass.
Great video! Love how Snarky Puppy creates such funky grooves that are so rhythmically complex but still so easy to bop your head to! And Odd Elegy is such a great song, I had been listening to it for a year before realizing that Tigran Hamasyan plays the piano in it! Or at least in the live version on UA-cam. Again you keep delivering such incredible content, your way of explaining rhythmic complexities are out of this world! And as I've said before, it's really great to see you show it practically by playing!
When I've listened to Odd Elegy for the first time and it came to the piano, I thought "Wait, that sounds vaguely familiar", and then I found out it was Tigran playing and it all made sense.
Odd Elegy was the first time I knowingly heard a composite time signature, and I've been fascinated by both the piece and the concept ever since! Cool to see it being analysed by you! Edit: That run at 6:58 was so effortless what
hi Yogev, your rhythm analysis is awesome. i always want to develop such a good sense of rhythm and get better at counting complex changes in time signatures in pieces. it always baffles me how can such complex composite times could be heard and understood without explainations from the composers themselves. I always love and look forward to your videos. I hope you can do a video on this topic in the near future, just explain how you “hear” and breakdown such complex rhythm. Thanks for your deep understanding and your willingness to share to the community.

The reason why Fm feels like the start is because the key signature for that part is Fm, but the progression starts on C major which is the dominant wanting to resolve to Fm. When that resolve happens, it feels like we're back home (because harmonically, we are) even though it's not the first chord in the progression.
@@YogevGabay Yes, and that original melody tonality is C Phrygian Dominant, one of the modes derived from F harmonic minor (which the Fm chord progression is based on) so the parts are closely related.

BTW, traditional Finnish music is rhythmically odd, matching the language's tendency to use changes in duration rather than changes in volume to stress syllables. No idea if it's odd in a way that's of any particular musical interest, but my ear enjoys it. (Väsen's Swedish; neighbors but linguistically very different.)

Compound meters are quite common in balkan music too, SP piece, a Väsen original, sounds almost Aksak style variation. Great deconstruction.
