This specific group of runners is by and far my favorite to see on AGDQ. Same group does Sonic 3 and knuckles I think
They're not super wacky but they have great rapport and funny anecdotes. Also genesis sonic gets so screwy when you break it, the zips and the tileset fuck ups are a joy to watch

Too cool. I found that Oil Ocean physics glitch as a kid. I never used it in this manner, but it's wild to see that it became a famous thing.

The feelings.. This is my childhood, the first game I have ever played
I play this at my age of 5,now I am 13
I still have my cartridge, but I never did manage to beat it legitimately despite getting to Death Egg with 30+ lives many, many times as a kid. Well done, man.
Yeah mate. Back in the day of No Saves. I only managed to finish with all chaos emeralds cause I had my little bro playing as tails. AI tails was just too damn slow on those special stages. Didn't even own the consol or game so could only try round our friends' houses

I dig AlecK47's whole look. The long hair, goatee, cargo shorts, crew socks, its all perfect. He looks like he knows everything about every game ever, and can explain it all in exhaustive detail.
God its really nice to see how sweet these guys are for this speed runner. Probably never got that much support in his life but he's doing amazing shit.
Eggman is still faster than Sonic. He'd make for a good speedrunner :D
So something my brother and I figured out when we were kids is that the old Atari controllers fit in the same port as the Sega Master System. While Atari controllers only have 1 button and a joystick, using these controllers while playing Sonic 2 pauses AND jumps at the same time! We were beating levels in less than 5 seconds (game time).
God that selfie break was *stressful*

I remember once that i took over the Demo screen as a child and was able to play the game from it. I still dont know how and why that happened. I am not even sure if it was real or a dream but it felt real.
If that ever happened it was probably a nick of the cartridge and then such a random one.

That's your opinion and fair enough, it's a really good game. Just I grew up with Sonic 2 so it's got that sentimental edge to it. 3+K came much later for me.
Yeah but if you take out nostalgia bias than you can see that Sonic 2 had tons of moments with awful design (see the last few levels), and was a pretty rushed game. Sonic 3 had much more consistent level design and had less bull moments.
Sonic 2 isn't a bad game but if you look at it objectively Sonic 3 and Knuckles is much better, special stages that didn't have incoming obstacles you couldn't see (I'm looking at you Sonic 2 special stages), and 2 super forms, the most levels, It had the most memorable stages (hydrocity, angel island, flying battery, etc). But I'm guessing your nostalgia is gonna override that and you're probably not gonna change your mind. (fair enough, I understand)
Both are great games.
(I didn't grow up with either games so I don't have that bias)
Fair play, if you're clued up on Sonic 2's development, there was a TON of zones that were meant to be in the final that didn't make it, which is why Metropolis Zone lasts 3 acts.
I feel that if I grew up with 3+K that bias might not really be there but who knows. To me it just shows progress; look at the gap between Sonic 1 and 2, it's huge, even more so with 2 and 3+K.

Wow he was right, Chemical Plan Act 1 was literally one frame off of a 0:22.
I'm not alone who made Sonic balance on the container and Tails jump near. XD I also had these glitches in Metropolis. Of course, by accident, back then I didn't even know of speed-running as a thing. So I had to reset.
Sonic 2 along with 3&K are my all time favorite Mega Drive Sonic games and my personal favorite level in Sonic 2 for my speedrunning is Mystic Cave Act 2

My favorite thing to do in Sonic 2 is putting the code for Super Sonic and play the full game without doing the hard special stages.

You can kill the first boss on death egg before he lands. Only way i could do it as a kid.

A completely useless glitch I found as a kid in this game is that if Sonic is standing on one of the pillars while Tails delivers the killing blow to the Aquatic Ruins boss, Sonic will remain standing in mid air while the pillar goes down. (Works the other way around too if Tails is standing on the pillar and Sonic delivers the killing blow.)
I've hardlocked OOZ boss as Super Sonic before. Not fun.

They usually don't have commentary on their own channels but maybe on tutorials.
Guy on the couch is constantly belittling the run. Example: Runner says "very good, got it in 58!" Guy on couch, "I can do that in 55." Frankly, I hope GDQ bans him from ever being on the mic after this.

In the beginning Sonic and Fox watched Mr. Robotic on his old farm yard. They had enjoyed setting up simple pranks and watching Mr. Robotic become angered at the horse poo they had left on his drive way before speeding away. Mr. Robotic cleaned up the mess, locked his gate and went inside to have dinner with his wife. His kids had already moved out of home. Mr. Robotic spoke about the farm needing some extra hands. Instead of hiring labour, Mr. Robotic created an army of harvesters to make his farm life easier. After a while, Sonic and Fox had ramped up their pranks in an attempt to anger Mr. Robotic. This time they had put a stick of dynamite in the exhaust pipe of his car, ready to detonate when Mr. Robotic tried to start up the car. Mr. Robotic came swaddling down from his farm house, looking forward to going to the shops. He sat down in his car and rumaged his pockets for some keys and he found them. He started the car when it when BOOM. Both his legs were broken from the blast and he had his wife call an ambulance. When he came home he rolled around in his mechanical wheelchair and began building an army that would consume the entire forest and become the world of Sonic the Hedgehog as we know it today.

I appreciate the effort from couch guy trying to explain stuff, but man take a damn break once in awhile. Let us just enjoy the playing for like 5 seconds without "um yeah" and "so what he just did there..."

I don't like games where you have to explain why these feats are feats. Would much rather have a commentary where people are like "Oi, that was fuckin' fast" and then split off on a tangent about polynomials or something, hearing about every frame-perfect jump takes me out of the experience of watching it. I can see he's very good at the game, now give me some personality instead of droning on from the couch.
Like, if you have to break off your explanation of feat A because Feat B happened and you need to quickly describe it before Feat C comes up, you need to chill.
Fair, but very much preference. I like to have a vague idea of what the hell Im watching if I dont get it.

adamness Speedrunning gains traction in the same way that high level play in fighting games gets attention or why sports in general are national past-times: people like to see others who've trained themselves excel in certain activities. It's just fun to watch someone use unconventional strategies and techniques to play through our favorite games at ludicrous speeds :)
