as someone coming from risd's foundation year, and having it be interrupted by corona and actually seeing how Not Great it was handled with online classes, i completely agree with your video. seriously unless you're getting a ton of scholarships and aid and really really want to graduate within 4 years from art school, taking a semester or year off is completely ok. i hate seeing my friends grapple with losing a year but y'know health should come before anything, and in the long run, your tuition will be worth it because you'd be getting hands-on experience. online learning even at risd. is not the same.

risd junior in gd here...sorry your freshman year got cut short mate. foundation year is meant to be physical and is literally not built to be online I can say from experience. but neither is any part of the school. at least I feel like now is a good chance to take a gap semester!! I'm in the middle of my major and just want to get it over with lol

I made this video SUPER on the fly, which is why I'm a sweaty mess and all over the place. I doubt this video will be all that helpful, but considering the incredible lack of empathy from the government and schools, I thought a friendly reminder that covid is freaking terrifying would be an important message for others to hear. Please stay safe, wear your masks (PROPERLY), wash your hands, disinfect, and keep your mental health in check. Let me know your thoughts and feelings about all this down below.
Take care you guys, I'm thinking of you 🙏💕

This video is very helpful! I am in Québec and I work in the health industry (but im starting as a freshmen in animation this fall) No need to worry about me Covid is being handled pretty well! Our school is partially reopening (max 50 students in one class), and our teachers required we buy video equipment so that the others can see what we are doing :P
I feel the same way about the freshmen magic, but our amazing student association created a discord for all of our class ;u; I hope you are doing well despite the current situation, I would love to know what you are up to post-grad!

Sadly, as an senior illustration student, I have to go back to school this fall. My college, even though we have cases of COVID, is opening back up.
I can’t transfer, because I’m scared I won’t be able to transfer credits and my school scholarship might get terminated or something. I have senior thesis as well that we had to “audition” for to become a senior.
I hate this so much, especially since I go to college in Florida😭!

not an art student (long time subscriber tho, love your content) but if I hadn’t gotten multiple scholarships and already signed a lease for an off campus apartment, I’d be taking the year off. I’m going to be fighting for elearning as hard as I can. My university has made no statements other than “everything is fine, see you in a few weeks!” Those of you who don’t have scholarships or leases...take time off. Do it for those who can’t (like me and a lot of other people).

I completely agree. I’m in my last year and am fortunate that my entire education is covered by scholarships. What sucks is that for many students like me, we can’t take a year off without giving up those scholarships. I wished that my school would implement more online courses, even though they aren’t the same (especially for studio courses). I’m glad that my dorm is a single room, and not a normal dorm. I have no idea how the new dorm situation is gonna go, and I’m worried that my fellow classmates won’t care about keeping safe. Good luck out there.

If I was getting emails that vague and nonchalant, I'd be having a full blown anxiety attack, full stop. The very least these schools can do is acknowledge the pandemic and reassure their students that measures are being taken for their safety. To just brush it off like this is any ol' September is beyond me. Best of luck this semester (and congrats on all the scholarships!!), I hope you can pull through safe and well 💕 (also ty for being a long time subscriber!!! 😭💗)

I go to an extremely small art school (under 300 people). Although our community is probably safer than other universities to come back this fall, I have a hard time believing we're going to be okay for a few months at the least, even if we clean and wear masks every day. We'll have to see what happens down the line in-person, but personally online is definitely not the way to go with all the money we owe.

I hella agree with you. I'll be going into a Junior college in Alabama and I was supposed to start all my art classes next semester but there is no way I am going to take them online when I just wont get a good enough quality of education to work in a field. I'm not a great artist as is. I need a lot of help. I'm seriously trying to find a way to maybe swap to all classes that will be online or maybe even drop but it might affect my financial aid. Thank you so much for making this video. As a MassArt student whose freshmen year was disrupted by Covid, I experienced firsthand how unprepared and unsubstantial the online classes were. I sent a long, extremely cohesive email to staff of all levels of power and influence, outlining the faults and failures of my online classes, as well as casting a light on the school’s own issue with inaction and just “going with the flow,” as you put it. I called them out for their disregard for their students’ welfare; MassArt should be asking itself *what it can do to help support its students at this time.* And yet they’re completely unreachable right now; calls to any office goes straight to voicemail.
In terms of finance, this whole situation is a screwed-up mess. I went from having 21 hours of class a week (with access to necessary resources, software, equipment, and studio spaces), to a mere 6 hours a week. And yet I’m not eligible for a partial tuition refund just because I still got full credit for those classes?? What’s the point of having credits if I haven’t gotten the required experience and knowledge that that class was supposed to offer? How does that do me any good??
It’s clear by their lack of communication, vagueness, and empty promises that they are completely unprepared and unequipped for this. While I understand why this is a struggle for them, that doesn’t mean I’m going to complacently go along with it. As an out-of-state student struggling financially right now, it’s simply not feasible! And they’ve raised tuition!
So- thank you for making this video. After weeks of fighting and pleading and having to defend my stance on this w admin, it’s so, *so* reassuring to hear your support in this video. I really needed that x Thank you for speaking up!!!

I am not attending my university this fall already (it being an art school) because of COVID but also online learning is just not the same as being in a classroom. i really needed to hear this. i go to a small art school in philly, but i truly do not trust staff, administration, and other students to follow thru with the schools "honor code" to keep everyone safe. my family is poor and my whole life ive been told that i should graduate in 4 yrs and etc etc but i know that my safety is above any kind of education i can get right now. ive already let my school know im going to take the semester off, but i havent sent any the documents back because im hoping my school switches to online soon. but i realize now its not worth it. im a sophomore btw, and freshman year was only fun because no one was worried about dying. as someone who has experienced their freshman yr (cut off of course bc of covid) i also echo Biana's statement: freshmen, please delay your education for the love of god. its not worth the money, its not worth the risk. im going to take this semester off definitely. thank you Biana, i really needed to hear your words to cement my decision.

As a medical doctor, I 100% agree with you. Just sit tight there, enjoy your life as much as you can(visit nature, watch sunset, complete a project you always dreamed of, learn drawing (as in my case), start a company, get to know your significant other, or spend more time with your parents or siblings ) while following the guidelines such as wearing a mask and social distancing, until we doctors/humanity figure it out. Consider it is a as gift or free time given to you for a year or so that you can do anything you want. How often you get such a chance?

I transferred and took time off to work as well so I understand your point. To keep people safe my school cut housing so most people have their own room... class sizes are cut and we only meet once a week in person. And then we get to permanently go home in early November...so we will only be on campus for about 3 months

It's almost been a year since the pandemic really hit and my senior year of high school got cut short, and unfortunately, half a year has passed since I first watched this video and it doesn't seem like the situation has gotten any better. Heck, I think it's worse. This year WAS my gap year, but at this point, I don't foresee the art school experience I dream of coming to fruition any time soon, I'm prepared that it won't be for at LEAST a decade. So now, I think I'm just going to truly take the initiative of creating a school experience for myself. Because while I don't want to remain stagnant, I am also not compromising my SAFETY and MONEY for ANYONE. I'll be 19 in May, and my five-year plan so far consists of me moving out and really making a name for myself through my art, so it's time to adapt to truly adapt to the pandemic life and get a move on.

My university has been planning and keeping us updated the entire summer. We are opening back up for the Fall, all classes are either Hybrid or Online, very few are staying in the traditional setting because they are once a week classes or that particular class can not be done online. They're going to set up temperature checks at the doors and if we have a temperature we are sent into an isolated room on campus. We can choose to go home and isolate there or just stay on campus in isolation. Students in the dorms will have roommates but if that student has to go into isolation, so does their roommate and whoever they were in contact with. Along with the temperature checks, we have to wear masks if we don't have one we are provided with one at the check-in. Then after Thanksgiving Break we are going back to remote learning the last two weeks of class.
I'm an Art History major with an Art minor, all of my art classes are hybrid. My Ceramics professor has it set up for us in the Fall to come in whenever we want during the days we have class because she will be there monitoring us and allowing a certain amount of students in to the studio. We might be able to still have 24/7 access to the studio, that isn't confirmed until we are back in class. As for my History class, we are doing synchronous online which means the class has to be in the chatroom with the teacher while they give the lecture.
My university is taking everything seriously, they even froze tuition for Freshmen so their semester is free. They also reduced parking permit prices and stalled the rise on tuition for the semester. We still don't know what the work-studies are going to do, so I won't know until I go back.
If I could, I would take the semester off. But this is my last semester before I graduate, so I have to stay and finish up.

I'm in canada and my problem is that for my school (I still pay full tuition) and everything is transferring online (I take an illustration program)
we can take a semester off but aren't guaranteed a spot to come back (they say the program fills up quickly so there are very little spots accepting returning students from a break) so we basically can't take a semester off.
I know the professors are doing their best but I can't help but feel like I'm paying so much for half an experience (the studio and in class experience is something I can't copy at home in a house full of my family members

    Hi, from
Spain in high school. Spain is kind of a mess right now. But we could be doing worse. It feels like this poor country is screaming in pain constantly.
We are going back to school. We have had our schedules adjusted so that we don’t mix with other classes. And there are a lot of measures.
But I’m worried because it doesn’t say anywhere to wear a mask even though it has been made a must (because of all of the new cases).
Also maintaining distance in the workshop is going to be difficult, unless they eliminate group projects.

I am going to a community college through my high school to knock out some college credits before I graduate as a senior. When I picked my classes, I didn't think I would be an art major, and though I originally wanted to do an art studio class, my math class was on the same day at the exact time as the art class, so I ended up having to pick math over that, and instead doing an art class that is a mix between studio art and art history... I'm super glad it worked out that way in the end now that everything is virtual, but I have a biology class to worry about and I hope it wasn't supposed to be lab based...

Where I'm going to school they're splitting up students that are living in the on campus dorms into apartments nearby (aka you might get slapped 30 mins away w out a ride and you cant help it) and are limiting the dorms to 2 people per room I believe. Then they're also doing mixed learning, where some is online and others are in person. I believe they're also giving us the ability to choose online learning for the in person classes. I really dislike how my school is telling us all of this AFTER we all signed up for housing or an apartment lease. Because now I'm stuck w a lease! The prices for online art school is really steep. I'm in a Game Art & Animation program at my community college taking my last core classes at the moment, but next fall I start the program classes and my advisor told us that because we couldn't use the tablets in the studio rooms we would need to buy our own. Which were at least $3000 for the minimum spec requirement, also FAFSA and the school's financial aid would not cover it or the cost of photoshop for classes. I was lucky and had someone who built a pc for me for a little less than that. I would not recommend going to school at the moment, I suggest taking a gap year to do programs like Draw A Box, Schoolism, the Draftsman Podcast on youtube has some amazing resources in their descriptions, I now marshallart.com has some amazing perspective lessons if you strughle with that, also some game art teachers stream their classes on Twitch so you can see how they do critique, you can look for almost any artbook by searching it's name and pdf after it. For any aspirating animators Aaron Blaise is on youtube and has lessons on creatureartteacher.com I believe is the name, alsothe website animation screen cap is great for studying stills of animated movies, you has most if not all the making of animated movies videos, pencil tests are also another fun this to look at. Also I the Watts Atilier I believe that's how you spell it if you can't find it search Jeff Watts on youtube he should have it in a title card somewhere they went online too, and they're a great resource for learning fundamentals. That's all I can think of off the top of my head🍀Good luck beans

Yeah, I definitely agree that it's not worth it to go back during the pandemic. As someone who's experienced first hand how having to switch to online courses mid-semester affects the quality of art classes, it definitely wasn't worth it to even finish out the semester. Figure drawing was ridiculous because we had to watch videos of "live" models and draw their poses or use photos of figure models as references and it's not even close to the same kind of experience you get in the classroom, and it's a much lower quality way of learning form. Also, even ART HISTORY was hard for me to do online mid-semester because 1. I got used to someone actually speaking in front of me giving me extra bits of information that I wouldn't get from just reading and 2. it's way less interactive, even when you have forums you have to post on every week like I did. I definitely didn't learn nearly as much in that class when it went online than I did in the actual classroom.
The first half of the semester was great and I was actually enjoying the assignments and critiques and such, but the second half I just did assignments to get them out of the way and get them over with. It was wayyyyy more stressful online. I don't think I'm going back for at least a year this year because I don't think I could handle it nor do I think I would actually learn anything of value or gain more skill than just me practicing and doing studies at home.

At times like this I think about the school I went to for my freshman year(I transferred immediately because it was a mess). They had co-ed floors with about 10 rooms with 2-3 people in each room with four bathrooms (one toilet and shower in each) on the floor (not separated by gender so it was another mess) and those bathrooms would always break and would not be cleaned from fri-sun. So I can only imagine that if those students have to come back to a dorm like that it can end up being a cesspool for the virus. That school gave out a lot of scholarships(at least when I attended) so I would imagine there will be a lot of students who will have no choice but to attend and put themselves at risk.

I'm actually transferring to a universities art program for graphic communication coming from a community college this year but I'm probably going to take online classes or at least as many as I can. A lot of my friends aren't art majors or live in my state but I'm telling them to take as many of them online as you can because I don't need y'all to get sick. I've asked them if it's possible to take a semester off but for the most part the reason why is if they did it would mess up any financial aid they have (I'm also at school because of financial aid too) and we can't risk it because we're broke as shit.

I’m just taking art classes at my local community college but I don’t want to continue this upcoming semester because it’s more expensive and will be a hybrid class where we’re in class sometimes and online sometimes. It just doesn’t seem worth it.
Has anyone tried CGMA, Schoolism, or similar online courses? I’m thinking about doing that instead, but idk.

While I totally agree with you in regard to not being on campus, and totally understand that not all schools have the skill or for thought to plan a good online process...many do and have spent MANY hours/weeks/months planning and training for the fall.
I’d alternatively suggest students focus their fall class time on courses that will continue your pathway toward graduation but that might better fit the online process. For example, perhaps skip that ceramics or dance class, but fulfill those liberal arts courses where you spend 50% of your time reading and the other 50% talking about what you read. Or the math class where you just watch the teacher write formulas on the board anyway and then spend hours working them out on your own.
Of course not all schools are set up this way, ie art schools may not require lib arts classes. In those cases it makes sense to rethink the semester. But if you can still continue your path toward graduation from home, do so.... As someone who will lose my job (and find myself unable to pay my mortgage or feed my babies) if lots of students just opt not to attend, I would very much appreciate it.

And the worst thing is that most of teachers here also in our city are either lazy, or don´t like their work anymore and they even don´t try to teach better in these days or there are also proud, hardworking and good teachers realizing this situation and guess what... these hardworking people are for opinion to NOT FREAKIN OPEN THE SCHOOLS and the´re so right, even when it´s like harder to interest kids to learn like this, or they can´t show em something now because it must be in school and stuff but they can handle it and these another lazy or not interested in work teachers and of course I forgot about parents wanna just not to teach again or they just wanna school again... like what the hell peole must be little patient ... and they don´t mind like they are like not realizing outside is some bad virus and ... ah ...

I live in the US, and I’m in 8th grade, in my opinion, the school is actually handling it pretty well, for the US, they quarantine people who are close contact, they mandate masks, they _try_ to be socially distanced, they give students the option to go online, which 20% of students have chosen, and no one’s caught it from school yet. I know that university is drastically different than middle school, but I think it’s embarrassing the way the US has handled it.

(I know that's still a great grade).. but my point is.. online.. learning complex math concepts strictly from a textbook is so much different than sitting in class talking through it with classmates and profs.. i am a very visual and auditory learner... i cannot just read skads of text on mathematics and understand the concept.. my brain starts trying to solve the equation and I can no longer focus on what I'm reading... im disappointed because I have 10 years of school ahead of me.. im 36 this year.. and uni in Canada is only online

    The only rules where:
    1)only stay with your classmates
    2)masks where optional
    3)don’t share food and drinks
4)wash your heads everytime you change class rooms
Guess what, most people didn’t keep up following the rules. For some reason we haven’t had a single case at our school and I don’t get how.

Maybe this is dumb but I'm already on the older side and now that I'm taking a year off I'll probably be a full two years older than the rest of the freshmen. Personally I’m an art student at university (so a big art department is housed inside a normal university essentially) and though ALL of my classes are online for the fall (and yeah having art profs teach through zoom is kinda trash). But, speaking for me personally, being in classes gives my mind stability and actually increases my mental health. And I’m applying for a transfer to a big art school in the spring so my situation is a bit different from others in that I’m only taking one art studio this semester and a bunch of other normal classes. Again, speaking for me. But OVERALL, them trying to put teachers and profs and students in danger is disgusting.

As someone teaching at University, I wonder who is going to cover teachers unemployment at this point... I can't afford not doing my job and taking "gap year", going online was my only option. In reality, I had my classes on a regular schedule, actually going online and working with my students, so they could ask anything they needed to ask. As much as I think online sucks for both lecturers and students and benefits only university PR and marketing teams, for language majoring students it was only option to sustain their level of language skills. Gap year would thrown them to the square one in language proficiency, any skill is not something you can pick up at the same level you dropped it a year ago. I'm not going to advocate putting your life in danger, but the issue is hell of complicated. Lots of art majoring students here has a system of "mentorship" - someone who is guiding students through all years, switching to another mentor in the middle of study could bring problems. My faculty only opens a very limited major programs once in 5 years, so if you fall of the wagon, you have to wait for 5 years.

It's so good to hear your perspective as an educator!! I didn't think of language classes at all, but you're totally right, that's definitely something you can't afford to take a break on. I'm glad you and other teachers have been able to make the best out of this god awful situation, and I'm sure your students are grateful too. I hope you and your students stay safe and have a good academic year 💕

Our "leadership" has been in "ignore the problem" mode for much of this pandemic. As worrying as the situation with some colleges and universities is, the K-12 situation is potentially much worse.

So if we shut down the dorms should apartment complexes be shut down too? I personally don’t see the difference between the two. COVID-19 really messed up everything because school was my refuge. And spending these months home... I am going back. I need peace of mind not to mention I need my job back. I’m a student worker.

    • @BianaBova
      @BianaBova  4 роки тому +1

Bathrooms and social interactions are the biggest difference between dorms and apartments. Most schools have 2 or 3 students per dorm room and all the students on a single floor share a few community bathrooms (obviously not every school and every dorm, but for the most part, apartment style dorms that have their own bathrooms and/or are meant for a single student are rarer and more expensive). In an apartment complex, everyone has their own space to live with minimal contact with other tenants. Not to mention, dorm halls are super social and students are constantly running from room to room to see all their friends--great for fostering community, not for social distancing.
All that said, I really feel you on wanting to leave home and go back to a happier (and more financially beneficial) place. I hope your physical and mental health stay strong and that you have a good semester 💕💕

    • @amberjilly8599
      @amberjilly8599 4 роки тому

Biana Bova Thank you so much. My dorms are apartment style and I have a roommate and we have separate bathrooms and even our own kitchen. So for my school at least it is way better for social distancing. I didn’t know that other dorms were so tight and together. This all could have been over with if people had just swallowed their pride and worn a mask and stayed home like the rest of us. Thank you again.
