Did Dolby cinema a couple hours ago. Prefer the Dolby cinema due to the more comfortable seats. Still get great sound and seat shaking during the worm scenes
Watched in Dolby on Thursday and it was shocking with the shaking and the sound. Very enjoyable. Going to watch in IMAX tonight. They said IMAX with Laser, idk what that means.
For this movie the best way is IMAX even if it is a “LieMax.” The extra ratio nonetheless makes this movie much more cinematic and it’s the way Denis wanted you to see it.
@@turtlesnail9824 Just saw Liemax this evening, funny enough at the exact theater in this video, and while you can tell it’s not the full picture as intended, it’s still great. One thing was for sure, in this theater the sound was LOUD. It was awesome, even if I almost went deaf at Giedi Prime.
Just saw it in IMAX last night and it was overwhelming visually and audibly in the best way possible! I had a hard time deciding beforehand whether to go IMAX or Dolby but you've taught well Shane so I made the right decision! For a movie like Dune... the IMAX ratio puts you literally in the desert, on the sandworms, and in the fight scenes! That was my reason for choosing IMAX and watching this video just gave me further confirmation! 😎
@@zenster1097 you just gotta look up the Theaters but a lot of it is on Wikipedia or on the venues own websites. GT means Grand Theater which is any of the screens that use the full size 1.43:1 frame but just IMAX GT should mean Imax 15/70mm film whereas dual laser should be listed as GT Laser
I watched dune 2 in both IMAX 70 mm and Dolby cinema yesterday and they were different, but enjoyable in both formats nevertheless. The comfort of the Dolby cinema seating can’t be beat especially for an almost 3 hr movie. Had to ignore some graininess of IMAX format.
the lack of bass in your dolby screening was definitely down to the cinema. I saw it in London at the Dolby screen in Odeon West end, and then at the Imax Laser in the Empire, and the Dolby screen had better bass and overall sound than the Imax. Dolby also had a much brighter, vivid and more evenly lit screen, whereas the Imax laser had quite a bit of vignetting to it and more muted
what row did you sit in? I'm going to see it next week at the odeon luxe in the west end. i got centre row D. Wondering if i've booked too close. last time i was there i was in row E near the centre and that was great. I hope row D isnt too close. Also did the picture fill the entire screen or were there black bars?
@@John-mn3iu Ha, I was right in the middle of the front row, so no, not too close. There's a lot of carpet between the screen and the front row and the screen comes all the way down to the floor and the seats recline. So I had no neck strain, the screen was exactly the size of my field of vision and my feet almost felt like they were "in" the movie
I’ve booked next week for Leicester Square Odeon Screen 1 and it’s saying it’s 70mm. I didn’t knew Dolby has 70mm. Was a little confused by still booked it.
@@Noblemumin different cinema from the one I’m talking about. Leicester Square odeon has a 70mm projector as well as Dolby vision. Whereas I was talking about the odeon west end, on the other side of the square.
Hurrah the Brits! I rewatched Part 1 on Dolby at Odeon West End then Part 2 a day later at BFI. To me Dolby wins (!) for both audio and video quality but BFI did better than I’d ever experienced before with sound; I’d always felt it was ever so slightly on the quiet side of ‘acceptable’… but it is a HUGE space to fill, in fairness. EDIT: Rows D and E are ideal in West End; I usually default to the back of a cinema but _that_ screen isn’t big enough for that. Centre middle is magical.
Bought tickets late Saw it in dolby. screen was almost as big as an imax but the sound was INCREDIBLE the seats shook in every scene you think it would it was overwhelming at points like the sand worm scenes. I still want to check it out in imax for that full aspect ratio
I saw both DOLBY and IMAX and at least for me, the DOLBY wins hands down. The DOLBY picture was much brighter, especially in that opening sequence where they fly up the mountain. The sound is also much better with seat rumbling throughout. The guns are just so much more punchy in DOLBY as well. The IMAX was also good but darker and we had the same problem where I can see the actual screen is already a bit old so much that I could notice it through out. All in all I wish I would’ve seen it all over again in DOLBY. It’s just a much better experience for me overall. Screen brightness, deep blacks, and way better sound. I went to the AMC in Deerbrook. Houston TX.
For me Dolby is #2 or 3 in my list to best premium format. I care mostly for the movie itself so a movie shot on IMAX is a no brainer for me and I was Dune Part 2 twice in my Las Vegas LieMax and it was still amazing, but I finally got the chance to see it on 70mm film in Hollywood and loved it. My second favorite might be 4D but that’s depending on the movie, I saw GxK on Dolby first and honestly didn’t care for the movie but on 4DX I was way more immersived and prob because GxK was the perfect 4D movie. Doing the same thing this week when I see Furiosa on Dolby first.
IMAX doesn't actually have a bass channel but it sounds basier because each channel in itself is actually a sub bass channel. So you can get prescion bass.
They go down “comfortably to 23 hz”, was a comment from an imax company rep I saw in an interview explaining their technology. It’s awesome at the one I go to. Not sure if this is true but I read Dolby cinema only goes down to 40 hz.
Imax has the sound waves ripping through my chest. Never felt anything close to that in the theatre. Dolby the second time around was almost a let down.
According to specifications: Dolby cinemas subwoofers go down to 31.5 Hz -3dB whereas Imax cinemas subwoofers go down to 20 Hz -3dB so there's no contest.
@@BoZ-s2x I've meet, spoke with and had a class taught at my school from skip levsay who's done multiple imax mixes. He's said IMAX doesn't have a. 1 channel, no bass channel. Each speaker is a sub bass
One thing i liked that brenden theaters here in vegas did, was that during the lock down, they took that time and updated every single screen and added all reclining leather seats to their premium screens and updated all other seating in the the rest of the screens. It has an imax, dolby cinema, dts X, thx and their banging JBX screen. Best of all is $5 Monday's all day any screen and movie.
I'm 48 years old 6'6" with old basketball knees. I saw Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm. What an amazing experience, but boy was I uncomfortable. Not being able to stretch my legs during that long movie was torture. I had to stand up a few times which was awkward. This is the main reason I'm hesitant to see Dune 2 in IMAX 70mm. I just don't think the difference is worth the pain. I've already seen it twice in Dolby Cinemas and taking my son to see it today. Heated reclining seats for the win!
The image quality at imax was not as good but I would regret not seeing it. It was filmed for that screen and you are missing some beautiful imagery at Dolby. I did both and glad I did. Imax first. Probably ruined the Dolby experience image wise but the sound and comfort of the Dolby for the second viewing was welcome.
I saw it three times this weekend, in LieMAX and Dolby at the AMC in Danbury, and a standard projection at an indie theater - Dolby is 100% the way to go. The seating comfort, color depth, and contrast are just so superior to the other versions it's not much of a comparison. The standard projection was actually kind of hard to enjoy due to how washed out it looks in comparison, like going from a 4K OLED screen to a 1080p screen from 2005. And the crappy seats in the fake iMAX theater gave my wife pretty bad back pain after sitting in one for three hours. Bonus tip: Skip the soda, it's a long movie!
I went for Dolby Cinema. I was tempted by the IMAX, but our local theater is just 1.9. It's interesting to see that it was cut with more horizontal information in Dolby Cinema, which seems to go against the whole value proposition of sub-1.43 IMAX screens. I know IMAX enthusiasts are tired of the LieMAX moniker, but it's stuff like that which really does water down their brand and make it less appealing to consumers like me. For me, the seat actuators in Dolby Cinema made a huge difference. I absolutely enjoyed feeling the rumble at key points throughout the movie.
I've experimented over the past few years and its Dolby all the way for me, I'm going tonight! Dune 1, Oppenheimer, Tenet, Top Gun, they were ALL way better in the Dolby. IMO the IMAX height/aspect ratio is a gimmick, I just love cinemascope, the old-timers had it figured out, how our eyes/brains work. As for the bass, I also feel this is overdone in the IMAX theaters I've tried (which is more than few!), I greatly prefer the more balanced and refined (yet still powerful) Dolby Atmos. The chair sub-woofers, dayum!!!! It's possible I'm lucky with a really good Dolby Cinema room just two miles from my house, I love it. Thanks for the vid!
I absolutely love how you compared IMAX to Dolby Cinema for a film. If you keep doing this, I can get behind this as which theater to put my money down on. Recently, I've been discouraged to keep going to Dolby because it just doesn't have that deep DEEP bass with all of those speakers surrounding me vs. going to IMAX & getting that deep DEEP bass that I hunger for. My theater has both IMAX & Dolby (AMC) & I have a membership as well. I love this comparison video like no other. I already shared this video to my 8 buddies & 7 already got back to me about digging on the comparison aspects. Keep up the amazing work, My Man.
Hey I feel you, and I was just commenting that all Dolby Cinemas are NOT alike! I found one in Atlanta (AMC Madison Yards) that definitely has the deep BASS and immersive sound you are looking for! The seats were rumbling during the worm scenes and even when the Fremen planted sand thumpers!
The Dolby Cinema in Lynnwood, Washington also has really deep bass. I saw Dune yesterday there because the IMAX was sold out, and that was some of the most extreme bass I've ever heard. Those scenes with the worms shook everything.
seen it 9times, 2x 4DX(outer seat then inner seat) 2x Dolby Cinema/Atmos(best sound, music vocals come from ceiling!!) , 1x ScreenX(sound was prob the worst but the expanded view suited film) 2x 4K-PLF (really good 7.1 sound), 1x imax70mm(great, BUT sides are cropped, sound is only 5.1 DTS) 1x 70mm cinemascope, this is the print the world premiere used, lighter colours!, prob has a different master for 70mm, but only 5.1DTS...
I've just got home from a 1570 IMAX screening of Dune 2 in Melbourne (Australia). It was my first IMAX experience and my only complaints were my seat was too close (third row) and I found it a bit grainy. Sound was phenomenal. I was also surprised with how basic the seating was, but admittedly I was comfortable enough for 3 hours. But the film was so amazing and had me so immersed I don't think it would really matter where I saw it.
WOW, it's nice to see that theater again. I live in Brooklyn, and in September of 2020, I took the Metro-North to that Cinemark IMAX to see TENET. Was the first film I'd seen in 6 months due to the pandemic. Staff were very friendly, theater had a nice 1.90 to 1 IMAX Laser presentation. Governor Cuomo didn't re-open NYC theaters until March of 2021. I finally got to see TENET in true 15 perf IMAX 70mm at AMC LINCOLN SQ. in Manhattan a week later. In fact, I just saw it again there on Thursday back to back with DUNE PART TWO. If you can, make the trip to NYC to see this presentation. I have some story issues with DUNE PART TWO, but that's another story. It's a visceral experience seeing it on that screen. The added height makes a difference since much of the film is 1:43 to 1. I've seen it three times already at Lincoln Square and noticed something new every time. Thanks again for showing that IMAX in Milford. I think about that theater quite often. Was a nice adventure making my way out there and seeing a movie for the first time during such a difficult time. P.S. By law, they can't dim or turn off those EXIT signs. Even DOLBY tried once, but were denied. P.P.S. Many AMC theaters broke the release date of February 29 for those popcorn buckets. I got mine about 3 weeks ago when I saw another film.
Always IMAX for fuller immersion. 100% agree with your take Shane. And I almost feel the same way when I get a choice between DTS and Dolby tracks…most often DTS sounds fuller and more immersive to me
Imax laser was a fantastic experience. Im not sure how the regular Imax would be but I was really impressed with the contrast and picture quality with the laser viewing.
@@akshittyagi6482 IMAX is clearly the superior format for this film. Every shot has that in mind. Absolutely stunning. The DBOX seats were a blast in the XD theater, but without the IMAX aspect ratio the movie is not as beautiful and epic.
I saw it last night in 70mm at IMAX Vaughan in Canada. The thing that stood out most was the square image...an unusual aspect from what we are used to. But I started to realize just how much information we will lose if the borders are cut down (faces, scenes, everything). Where the immersion comes from is the screen filling the view with the height of the image making you feel more there vs widescreen. As for the chairs...ours were quite comfortable, but I do have bad memories of them too from the old Cinesphere. So for me... If I'm doing IMAX, it's 70 otherwise AVX (our version of your Dolby).
Can't wait for Dune: Part 3. It is not even announced yet. I want Paul (Tymothee) and Zendaya get together... ❤ Unfortunately I watched it on a regular screen. But in a luxury recliner.
I've only been to 4 Dolby locations and they have all been pretty comparable. But IMAX theaters can vary massively as far as screen size, seating, and sound quality. I've been in a couple of "IMAX" theaters which were barely any different than standard theaters. The one closest to me is a huge screen, but really cramped, uncomfortable seats. I saw it there yesterday and it was amazing...I wouldn't hesitate to recommend despite the awful seats. Looking forward to checking it out in Dolby later this week.
That's what bugs me about IMAX, you can't just apply what you hear online to your local theater without trying it out yourself. They're supposed to have tight control of standards, but it feels like their standards are inherently very flexible to account for different ages and sizes of theaters. Dolby Cinema not only feels more standard in practice, but I think its benefits are less dependent on having really special theaters, since their audio and visual technology are scalable and support standard cinema aspect ratios.
Normally I would say dolby cinema because of the recliners but I'm spoiled. A new IMAX laser theater was just built by me and it has recliners. So for me it's perfect lol. But either way for Dune I would always say IMAX is better. It's framed that way and meant to be seen in the full image they captured.
Thank you sir, this was the best breakdown and comparison that I found so far on the web. Really helped me make my decision. I’ll be seeing it in IMAX. And as a sidenote, it also made me a little homesick. I was born and raised in Connecticut, but moved away to Atlanta 21 years ago. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your content.
I just saw Dune 2 at the IMAX in AMC Lincoln Square in 70MM and it was extremely comfortable, I had plenty of leg and shoulder room (I'm very tall), and the projection was stunning. I've been to more luxurious cinemas but the screen size at Lincoln Square in 70mm was insane. It's fully booked during all times of the day still.
Yeah. AMC Lincoln Square 13 is My #1 Go-To Movie Theater. Both its IMAX and Dolby Cinema auditoriums are unmatched here in the city. And since IMAX has been practically SOLD OUT (I'm definitely not sitting in those first few front rows) for every screening of "DUNE 2", I had to settled for Dolby Cinema yesterday. My only complaint was that Dialogue was a bit indistinguishable at times during the film's louder sequences. But Sound and Visual (wise), still stunning. I tend to do Balcony Seating at the Dolby Cinema theater. Electric Seats are totally comfortable. And the Viewing Angles are great. I'm surprised that Balcony didn't break apart during some sequences. 😁😁😁 There was a time in which getting seats at that AMC IMAX Theater wasn't an issue. Now thanks to Nolan and Villeneuve and Cameron), EVERY BODY and their dog is going now. Theater Chains really need to start building/renovating more "Premium" types of theaters to handle the increased patronage. My family, friends, and Co-Workers give Me a hard time and call Me "BOUGIE", when I tell them that unless at film's in IMAX and/or Dolby Cinema, I just stay home and wait for Streaming/Physical. I absolutely refuse to see Movies any other way. Great Video, Shane. Just be aware that I will call you OUT!!! if I ever see you pull out a Camera in a theater.😜😜😜
There is nothing wrong with the Dolby Atmos subwoofers. With any speaker/headphones/earbuds they have a range of sound that they can play. However within that wide range, they have an optimal range that is a bit narrower and sounds really good in that range. Anything outside that range is generally referred to as the cutoff, or drop-off, where it will struggle to produce those sounds, even though they are still able to. Basically the IMAX has subwoofers that have the optimal range in the lowest range possible. That is where that "extra bass" is coming from. And yes, it feels like your seat is going to come unbolted from the floor. It's awesome!
Hello from Portugal, here I see in imax with speakers in the ceiling and was a tremendous experience,it’s loud crisp and amazing bass that you feel in your body and cinema walls and is very immersive.
Denis Villeneuve uses Dolby Atmos as part of his filmmaking, images and sounds are created together as part of his creative method, so I'll always choose Dolby Cinema for his movies.
Just watched it at 1 of the 12 real IMAXs on the planet, Irvine Spectrum in California. AMAZING!! It's been a while since I've been there, but they upgraded the seats and sound system some time ago. I can't wait to see it in Dolby Cinema to compare the sound!
I go with Dolby Cinema every time. Don’t have the newer IMAX near me and their seats are so old and crappy. Love the better seating arrangement of Dolby. Makes for a better viewing experience.
Per IMDb, these are the specs: Aspect ratio: 1.43 : 1(IMAX GT Laser & IMAX 70MM), 1.90 : 1(IMAX Digital & non-GT Laser), 2.20 : 1(70 mm prints), 2.39 : 1(non-IMAX theatrical ratio) Camera: Arri Alexa 65 IMAX, IronGlass VLFV MKII Dune & Moviecam Lenses and Arri Alexa Mini LF IMAX, IronGlass VLFV MKII Dune & Moviecam Lenses Cinematographic Process: ARRIRAW(6.5K, 4.5K, source format), Digital Intermediate(4K, master format), Dolby Vision Printed Film Format: 70 mm(horizontal, Kodak Vision 2383), DCP Digital Cinema Package So, it was filmed digitally at 4.5K - 6.5K (dep. on vertical height). For digital transfers that would be a 4K presentation (or less). For 70 mm transfers, that would be a ~4K - 6K presentation. These are less than for movies shot with 70 mm IMAX film cameras, which result in ~12K presentations. Oppenheimer was filmed that way, for example. Anyway, I saw Dune Part Two twice in 70 mm at the Irvine Spectrum. Not quite as sharp as Oppenheimer was, but terrific nonetheless. The sound was fantastic, including bass so low that you could only feel it in your gut. The seats are very good there. The only little complaint I have is that I could hear the projector both times. That wasn't the case for Oppenheimer, and I'm not sure why.
Never would’ve thought this, but I actually prefer Dolby cinema over imax. The seats are REALLY comfortable and we had enough space to eat dinner, fully recline and people STILL had enough space to walk past us, the seats have buttkickers in them so they vibrate when something happens on screen such as an explosion, you have Dolby tuned sound which sounds better than imax imo, and the screen quality was better, and somehow it being smaller made the experience better. I’ve always thought imax THE premium movie experience, but they definitely have some competition with Dolby. Dolby Cinema: Like watching a movie in a very cozy, warm, very feature packed home built cinema.(A Home cinema on steroids) IMAX: is like your typical local movie theater, but the theater started taking steroids(Local movie theater on steroids) Dolby is quality over quantity(easier to make smaller theater sound good and be more comfortable) IMAX goes for quantity over quality(everything is VERY BIG, they want to wow people with that) If you’re a movie enthusiast that want the VERY best movie quality, you’ll DEFINITELY prefer Dolby cinema. If you’re a casual who doesn’t care so much about everything being perfectly tuned(sound, screen, luxury seats etc.) and you just want to wow the family with the large scale of the theater, then IMAX is for you. *Both theaters are premium. Dolby is just THE most premium.
The closest Dolby Cinema from my house is in Detroit(about 3 hours away), so I'm not going to drive that far to watch an almost 3-hour movie and then have to drive 3 hours back... But I just seen an article that a cinema in Grand rapids(about 50 minutes away) is using Dune 2 to debut a 38 channel Dolby Atmos amphitheater with some kind of bass shakers in the seats, and a 4K laser projector, so I'm definitely going to go check that out! Since I've upgraded my Home Theater I have not heard a commercial theater that sounded better than my room, so I'm pretty excited at finally hearing something above what I'm used to hearing! Maybe I'll make a short video on it when I get back from the experience.
San Jose tech Imax what an experience! I had seen it already at my local theater but sowmthing was missing in the audio. The imax had so much bass you could feel it in your chest! I could see why they tailored it back it would blow out the speakers at the local place. The imax just has so many subs that you feel everything thats why its an experience.
I saw it in Dolby Cinema and the Ornithopter scene you were talking about definitely had various levels of placement in the room. Some were place at ear level and then some were placed up a little higher and then a few sounded like they were running along the ceiling. They had very specific placements and moved through the space perfectly coordinating with what was shown on the screen. My issue with the theater I saw it in (AMC Alderwood Mall in Lynwood Washington) the rotors in the seats did not vibrate like they normally do. Normally, the rotors vibrate at the frequency the subs emit so the volume can be loud but not absolutely deafening while the rotors send the vibrations through your seat so you literally feel the subsonic frequencies in your body as if the subs are dangerously loud. This was the case when I saw Dune Part 1 at the same theater just over a year prior. (I’ve seen a good handful of movies there). I have a new Dolby Cinema much closer to me In Vancouver Washington (I live in Portland, OR) that I will be seeing it again there to compare, and then hopefully I’ll get to an IMAX theater before the movie leaves. I’ll own it on UHD disc and watch on my 7.1.2 system eventually.
Our local theater in Trumbull, AMC Marquis 16 just opened their Dolby Cinemas back in December. Too bad I didn't see Dune 2 in it. Hopefully, I'll see GvK in Dolby Cinemas in a few weeks!
I saw it in IMAX first and then Dolby Cinema. I prefer the Dolby version, where the sound turned my theater into a roller coaster. It was a wild experience
I go to this exact same cinema in Milford, and I love the IMAX theater there. They have a new Dolby Cinema at the AMC Marquis 16 at Trumbull. It's not as big as the IMAX screen in Milford, but it looks very nice regardless.
Seeing it this weekend at my local Dolby Cinema. All the good Imax seats were already booked. The last film I saw at my local Dolby Cinema was John Wick 4 and the bass was astounding.
It wasn't shot on film, but Villenueve transferred the digital footage to film and back again to help soften the image, giving it a more classically cinematic look.
We saw it in the Dolby Cinema and our bass was so loud that it felt like it was going to shake our teeth out of our heads. It was a great movie and I'd love to go and see it again!
I’ve seen it in Boston in Imax and Dolby and the bass response in the Dolby was just as incredible as the Imax. I guess it comes down to how the sound in each theater is calibrated. Great movie in both formats…just some small difference like you pointed out.
I caught the Dolby version in @ AMC Madison Yards in ATL, and the BASE response was absolutely there! The seats shook like what you were saying you experienced in IMAX, so no complaints sound wise. I was expecting the Dolby Vision screen to give me more top/bottom aspect ratio, so I guess I was a bit disappointed as I’ve seen Dolby Cinema fill that screen with some other movies! Denis had a pre-movie opening statement where he talked about his and Creig Fraser’s preference for Dolby Vision & Atmos. Now the HUGE AMC IMAX I caught DUNE at was in Morrow, Ga! The picture was AWESOME, but sound wise🎉, a bit too loud and not as immersive enough like the Dolby!
Just pre-ordered the 4K steel book yesterday, going to wait and watch it in my own theater where there’s absolutely no chance of disappointment. I went to see Oppenheimer at the nearest IMAX theater to me, and it was a horrible experience, like yours, the seats were horribly uncomfortable, and my back was sore halfway through this long movie And the sound was even worse, I can play my system at reference level super clean and easy and theirs was so loud that even when people were just talking, it would hurt your ears, almost like it was clipping. Don’t know what was going on there. but I will say I played that movie at -20/-15 in my theater when I bought the disc And it sounded like reference levels. I’m calibrated to 80 DB in my room. I also have a system in my truck with all focal speakers amplified and 2 12s and listen to it all the way there so my ears were accustomed to loud music. So that might’ve been due to the movie being mixed louder? Either way I’m not going back.
Hi Shane, I'm enjoying this discussion. According to what I have read "Dune 2" was shot in "Digital IMAX" - Camera: Arri Alexa 65 IMAX, Moviecam LensesArri Alexa Mini LF IMAX, Moviecam Lenses. The IMAX version you saw was onl 6 Channel IMAX sound not 12. Going back to the size of the screen. It's not the size that is important, it is the ratio. Take "Barbie", this movie was in 2.0:1 as was "Jurassic World Dominion" and many more movies, even including the latest Woody Allen movies. A lot of directors are going for 2.00:1 these days. Dolby say 64 channels of audio. Quote "A typical surround sound system consists of left, center, and right discrete channels with the speakers behind the screen. The surround channels are handled by wall-mounted arrays of speakers, divided acoustically into two or four zones. All speakers within a zone receive the same audio information. In a Dolby Atmos theater, every speaker - as many as 64 total - is powered independently and gets its own separate audio feed. In effect, each speaker is its own zone. In addition to the overhead speakers, Dolby Atmos typically adds more surround speakers and screen speakers." End of quote. But no studio has the money to spend lots of time in a studio to fine tune audio placement in the surrounds. Whereas Dolby 7.1 is more natural and better sounding for me. I love Dolby 7.1. The Atmos version is taken off the 7.1 audio track. Out of interest "Dune 2" in Digital IMAX is only 6 channels. Love your channel and have subscribed. Keep up the good work.
He said it was a laser imax, an older digital imax can be updated to 4K with a single laser imax projector, that upgrade includes 12 ch immersive audio, (includes overhead speakers).
Saw it at the SF Metreon in 70mm IMAX, then a dolby cinema theater the next day. Gotta say, the picture and audio quality was top notch in Dolby, but I couldn't figure out if the seat should be reclined or not, it was just uncomfortable to me. The IMAX was just awe-inspiring. Dimmer, yeah. Audio was a muddier and more bassy, but the scale was spectacular and stunning, and that 1.4 just sucks you in. I think the 70mm will remain my top choice since it's just a short train ride away.
Just watched the movie at the Lincoln Square IMAX and found specs of dust landing on the projector lens throughout the movie kind of distracting. I've never found dust to be an issue, and am not sure if that's a risk watching something at this large of a screen. Overall, the experience was bad when you're watching a close up scene and a squiggly line randomly appearing on their face.
Yea the specs of dust were bad for this one at Lincoln. It cleared up a little as the movie went on tho. I think I noticed similar specs for Oppenheimer as well.
Concerning the different AR with more/less screen information. I think the master AR is 2.20:1. IMDB lists this as the 70MM print AR. Not IMAX 70MM, but regular vertical film 70MM, which 2.20 is the standard AR. From this, an IMAX blowup was made, essential, "ZOOM IN" or side crops for the 1.43 and 1.90. Then top and bottom crops for the 2.39. This explains why you see more of the side information on the 2.39 vs. the 1.90. If IMAX 1.43 AR was the original AR, the 2.39 crop should not have yielded more info on the sides than 1.90. So the print or AR to see to get "all" of the screen information would be the 70mm 2.20 AR print. This should have been the print that WB put on their home video release, but obviously was not the case, and hoping they would change this for Part 2 (we're talking about WB here) would be a waste of time. So aside from 2.20, all other AR, you are losing screen information. However, I don't see a 70mm release print, at least not that I know of, I don't currently live in the US, so I have no idea. It then just becomes a matter of personal preferences. Cheers
Ummm, select scenes are expanded to 1.43:1, also (or firstly) they used IMAX certified cameras, so surely the aspect was not a single aspect for the entire film, I can’t find a source for how it was filmed but it’s in 1.90:1 for the entire film in IMAX with some scenes opened up to 1.43:1, ..,with the two types of IMAX certified cameras they used I guarantee one was used to film in the 1.43:1 AR for those select scenes, not 2.20 as you suspect.
…since they used IMAX certified cameras, it will most likely be cropped for 2.39:1. I mean, if it wasn’t optimized for IMAX they could have just done a standard 1.85:1 aspect, right? …except most large screens that aren’t IMAX are scope screens (Dolby?). So, surely during filming it was framed in such a way as to not lose anything important, but certain scenes will benefit greatly by opening up vertically. … the problem with most people’s thinking is that it has to fit a frame, but cinema is ART.
Let me know if you saw it in Dolby. Every time I've seen a movie at that amc in Dolby the seats never had bass. And I complained to the management because they had a Bollywood movie playing next to Godzilla minus one minus color and it totally took me out of it. Every quiet scene i could here the dance numbers. Absolutely terrible experience.
lincoln square imax last night was the greatest cinema experience I've ever had, despite the seats being absolute crap. the gladiator scene with austin butler was out of this world in the full aspect ratio.
Hey Shane, you should definitely go check out the new Dolby Cinema in Trumbull... It just open, And I'm so excited that I don't have to drive all the way to Plainesville anymore. The Dolby Atmos in trumbull's theater was so ground shaking, You could literally feel it in your chest when they're riding the worms. There's a lot of height effect in this theater. Especially the scene where they have the birds inside of their mountain, You could literally hear the birds flying above you which was pretty awesome. I'm not sure if plainsville had it set up correctly.
Thank you for the review!! I've been searching through these comments for a review of the Trumbull Dolby Cinema experience! I'll be seeing Dune 2 there on Sunday and I'm very excited!
Shane, it isn’t just cinemas with 15/70mm IMAX film projectors that are able to fill a 1.43:1 screen for Dune: Part Two, IMAX with Laser GT (dual 4K projectors) are also able to do the same. IMAX with CoLa (single 4K projector) is not capable of doing this and is limited to a maximum aspect ratio of 1.90:1 I’ve booked to watch Dune: Part Two in IMAX with Laser GT on a massive 1.43:1 screen followed by Dolby Cinema on the same day. 😎 I’m also considering going a third time to watch the only 15/70mm IMAX film print in Europe. Can’t wait… Thanks for this comparison. 🙏🏻
For the past year and a half I had been living in Los Angeles and was so unbelievably blessed by the range of screens I had the opportunity to pick from. I got to see Oppenheimer in the 70mm 1.43:1 version at Regal Irvine Spectrum. Saw Killers of the Flower Moon at The TCL Chinese Theatre in theatre 7 (the main auditorium). There's also so many lovely independent theatres such as The Frida which is a bit of a drive but so worth it. BUT... I had to move back home to Miami, FL and omg I'm so sad... Every theatre here just sucks man... Every screen is dirty as hell, something is always fucked with the projectors or the sound. When I watched Dune Part 1 in Imax at the AMC in South Beach, there was this purple hue the entire film overlayed on the upper half of the screen. At first I thought it was part of the movie, but I quickly realised it wasn't because Timothée Chalemet's forehead is definitely not slightly purple. One Imax theatre had fucking flies chilling on the window the projector screens out of. You could see them moving around every now and then. Sometimes they would just sit there for long periods at a time. People here are also so inconsiderate and annoying. There's always someone on the phone or there are people who love to talk loudly during a movie. Like during my viewing of Dune Part 2, this dude sitting 2 seats to my left decided he wanted to commentate the entire movie out loud. When the worms would show up, he would say something like "Oh shit, the worms.. HAHA!!" and then pull out his phone for a minute. God I hate Florida so much. I have yet to find a truly great theatre here to watch movies on a scale films like Dune and Oppenheimer demand. I miss LA :'(
Saw in Dolby today. I haven't gone back to see a movie twice in theaters ever (especially since stuff comes out on streaming so quick these days), BUT, I feel I need to go try IMAX for this epic of all epics!
With big movies like this where the theatre is usually packed... its best to find the optimal seat & viewing angle. I would rather have a middle seat on Dolby than a corner seat or nose bleed seats on IMAX
Closeup shots in IMAX were really crispy, but some CGI scenes were so "blurry" and low res which is sad... And again, I'm not a fan of the IMAX screen format, you could say I'm a proud Scope fanboy.😊
I see the movie in IMAX at mall of Geogia. If the same cameras for part one were used for part two then a difference in true imax to digital imax was very distinct. Some scenes to look a little soft, while others did look beautiful. I still very much enjoyed the film, and I still plan to buy the 4k blu-ray when that comes out later in the year.
AMC Waterfront Pittsburgh Dolby was fantastic, bass was great. Only gripe was that the IMAX shares a wall with the Dolby. Very annoying to hear the theater next to us 15 minutes ahead.
IMAX should really consider updating their seating. Dolby always provides excellent seating, which makes watching long movies much more enjoyable. I managed to convince my wife to watch Oppenheimer in IMAX, but it will be difficult to convince her to watch Dune 2 in IMAX when Dolby cinemas offer recliners.
Alien Romulus. IMAX is DEFINITELY the best way to see it. You get more picture on the top, bottom, & sides. DOLBY ATMOS has Great sounds too, but you are missing the full frame, all around. 7:58.
Saw it in Regal RPX because they gave me a promo ticket and the bass was not hitting so I’m excited to see it in IMAX. The seats were comfortable though, my IMAX theater seats are horrible.
I saw it today in Dolby Cinema. I was going to see in IMAX 70mm since I live in New York City but I prefer the comfort at Dolby Cinema. I was surprised that you said Dolby cinema has less bass compared to IMAX. It could depend on the theater. Mine was AMC Staten Island and it was built around 2018 so it could be because it’s newer. Enjoyed the movie and got way more Zendaya compared to part one!
IMAX all the way for me, as there is only a certain time frame you can get the picture in that format. Dolby's picture is the one we'll be getting on the home release, like all his past films. As for sound, considering the channel we are on, we can get pretty damn close to room shattering sound, so that's never going to be a deciding factor in where I see a film. IMAX has expanded ratio, IMAX is my pick.
This is an absurd take. It sounds like you went to a terrible Dolby theater. The one I went to blew my balls off, especially regarding the bass. It was the wildest sound I've ever experienced.
To me it sounds like the Dolby cinema you went to did not have the kickers on in their seats. I’ve seen it in IMAX and dolby and the sound in Dolby was booming. I will say tho there are some dolby cinemas near me where I can tell the bass/kickers aren’t turned up high and the experience is not as good.
oh shit I watched Dune 2 at the same IMAX in Milford as well! I also watched it again in IMAX in Danbury a few days later and I wasd ebating whether or not to see it in Dolby Cinema as well.
Hey Shane. Thank you for the really great review. I've got to say I am pretty sure the issue you had with the lack of bass at your dobly theater was just an issue with your theater. Because the base you described for the Imax laser is exactly what I felt at my dolby theater. My IMAX laser experience was really good as well but the sound just felt less immersive compared to my dobly experience. Regarding the screens there was a scene that the lazer projector for the IMAX viewing just didn't have the contrast needed for the scene transition that I didn't experience with dolby. Otherwise I have to agree there wasn't much in it for the viewing experience. At least in my area the way to experience this movie is in dolby all the way.
Just seen Dune 2 in Dolby Atmos and will see it again in Dolby. My theater has IMAX and Dolby. IMAX screen is not a true 1:43 though. Seen Oppi in that IMAX theater and was great. But Denis did say they perfected sound exclusively for Dolby. And really brings up the immersiveness. Dolby hands down for Dune 2 imo. Side note, seen Tenet in Dolby also and actions sequences were way too loud. Nolan really tests the limits lol

Did Dolby cinema a couple hours ago. Prefer the Dolby cinema due to the more comfortable seats. Still get great sound and seat shaking during the worm scenes
Not seeing it imax is a crime.
Watched in Dolby on Thursday and it was shocking with the shaking and the sound. Very enjoyable. Going to watch in IMAX tonight. They said IMAX with Laser, idk what that means.
Same here. XD theater. Sounded incredible. Seat shaking MANY times throughout. Felt it in my chest too.
i automatically disregard anything anyone who uses the sunglasses emoji says. ill see the dolby version thanks
The bass I heard during the grandfather sand worm scene in imax was the deepest hardest bass I’ve ever heard or felt. IMAX was awesome for this one
IMAX is only comparable with Dolby if it is an IMAX Laser theater, otherwise Dolby for the win all the time
Also, to be aware, 1.43 screens with dual laser digital IMAX can also do the full frame images, not just imax 70mm
ye watched this in that format with a dual laser setup great experience
How do I find which ones do that in the wiki or elsewhere? Is it GT?
@@zenster1097 you just gotta look up the Theaters but a lot of it is on Wikipedia or on the venues own websites. GT means Grand Theater which is any of the screens that use the full size 1.43:1 frame but just IMAX GT should mean Imax 15/70mm film whereas dual laser should be listed as GT Laser
what's better is that dual laser also get a 12 channel mix, better than 6tracks used for imax 70mm
@@zenster1097 , May be this might help en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IMAX_venues#cite_note-fn3-1
Saw it at IMAX Sydney. Dual Laser 1.43.1 aspect ratio with the 12 channel set up. What an experience.
Agreed! Saw it at citywalk during the fan first screening where it was digital 1.43:1. Incredible experience
Can't forget the sound shaking your entire body, and the deep dark blacks.
I watched it on IMAX with reclining seats too. Is that something that's not common?
@@mattlife25Most IMAX screens have high back seats that rock, and no leg support.
the lack of bass in your dolby screening was definitely down to the cinema.
Houston TX.
I saw it in IMAX last week and I'm going to see it in DOLBY tomorrow. I am so excited to see it again!
I hope they release the UHD Blu ray 1.77:1 or 1.85:1 over scope. I wish part 1 did this as well at least for the IMAX shots.
I hope so as well. Many people assume they'll probably release a box set with taller Aspect Ratio for both 1 and 2 at some point.
Thanks for the vid!
i saw godzilla minus one in dolby. Twice! And oh boy was it amazing! Saw it in color, and black and white
DOLBY is THE BEST IMO! Always a great experience! Saw it in both formats and DOLBY was way better.
We saw it 6 times, first time 70mm, 2nd time in 4D, 3rd in Dolby Cinema, 4th in OmnIMAX. B&B theaters for your screenX?
Saw the 70mm IMAX - epic film and was really impressed with the sound.
We watched the IMAX version but only because the theater >nearest us< had that format available.
I saw it in IMAX 1570 film in Melbourne and the sound was amazing.
Dolby XD with the DBOX seats was an absolute treat.
Seeing IMAX tonight.
70mm IMAX Lincoln Square soon.
If you mean at Cinemark xd, it’s not Dolby it’s auro 11.1
let me know the difference!
@@akshittyagi6482 IMAX is clearly the superior format for this film. Every shot has that in mind. Absolutely stunning.
The DBOX seats were a blast in the XD theater, but without the IMAX aspect ratio the movie is not as beautiful and epic.

Watched it today on Dolby cinema and it was amazing! Loved the experience and the movie!
Exit signs must never be turned off. Not even for artistic reasons. This is a worldwide standard.
Dolby Cinema needs to step up their LFE game. I’ve had the same experience at my local Dolby, not enough bass.
Normally I would say dolby cinema because of the recliners but I'm spoiled. A new IMAX laser theater was just built by me and it has recliners. So for me it's perfect lol. But either way for Dune I would always say IMAX is better. It's framed that way and meant to be seen in the full image they captured.
Imax + recliners 😳😳
I did the same. I much preferred the Dolby Cinema. At the same time it made me appreciate my theatre at home so much more. Great video thanks Shane.
Perfect!
See it in dolby at Lincoln too, both are fantastic.
What i don't understand is why can't they combine all the technology into the same theater
There was a time in which getting seats at that AMC IMAX Theater wasn't an issue.
Now go see it in an RPX, it’s also Atmos but I’m curious about their projectors.
They use one Barco 4K projector last time I was there to see Tenet pandemic era 2020.
Per IMDb, these are the specs:
Aspect ratio: 1.43 : 1(IMAX GT Laser & IMAX 70MM), 1.90 : 1(IMAX Digital & non-GT Laser), 2.20 : 1(70 mm prints), 2.39 : 1(non-IMAX theatrical ratio)
Camera: Arri Alexa 65 IMAX, IronGlass VLFV MKII Dune & Moviecam Lenses and Arri Alexa Mini LF IMAX, IronGlass VLFV MKII Dune & Moviecam Lenses
Cinematographic Process: ARRIRAW(6.5K, 4.5K, source format), Digital Intermediate(4K, master format), Dolby Vision
Printed Film Format: 70 mm(horizontal, Kodak Vision 2383), DCP Digital Cinema Package
So, it was filmed digitally at 4.5K - 6.5K (dep. on vertical height).
Easy answer: Both. You'll want to see this brilliant movie more than once.
Dolby Cinema: Like watching a movie in a very cozy, warm, very feature packed home built cinema.(A Home cinema on steroids)
IMAX: is like your typical local movie theater, but the theater started taking steroids(Local movie theater on steroids)
Dolby is quality over quantity(easier to make smaller theater sound good and be more comfortable)
IMAX goes for quantity over quality(everything is VERY BIG, they want to wow people with that)
If you’re a movie enthusiast that want the VERY best movie quality, you’ll DEFINITELY prefer Dolby cinema.
I prefer the wider aspect ratio of a Dolby cinema.
I saw it in IMAX first and then Dolby Cinema. I prefer the Dolby version, where the sound turned my theater into a roller coaster. It was a wild experience
I got Dune Bucket from AMC but I went to see the movie in Regal IMAX .
Saw it in 15/70 on Friday, have to say the spectacle was amazing, sound was insane, one of the best experiences I had at the movies in a while
I go to this exact same cinema in Milford, and I love the IMAX theater there. They have a new Dolby Cinema at the AMC Marquis 16 at Trumbull. It's not as big as the IMAX screen in Milford, but it looks very nice regardless.
Trumbull has a great Dolby cinema. Go to it now while it's still newish cause it will get run down quick. The locals are rough around here.
@@therealshanelee will do
Seeing it this weekend at my local Dolby Cinema. All the good Imax seats were already booked. The last film I saw at my local Dolby Cinema was John Wick 4 and the bass was astounding.
Holy crap, I'm from Milford, CT. I love that theater especially the IMAX theater. I wish I was there, I went to see it in New York City in IMAX 70mm.
This is so helpful, thank you for putting this annoyingly hard-to-find info in one place. :D
According to what I have read "Dune 2" was shot in "Digital IMAX" -
Camera: Arri Alexa 65 IMAX, Moviecam LensesArri Alexa Mini LF IMAX, Moviecam Lenses.
@@benji888578 Hello benji888578. Dune 2 was only recorded in 6 channel (not 12 channel) sound. All the best.
To me those specs of dust give the quality so much character that we no longer see in digital versions.
Absolutely phenomenal comparison and it’s even better because plainville is the theater I go to the most. Glad I stumbled upon this video by chance
Minus the average cgi
Hey Shane, you should definitely go check out the new Dolby Cinema in Trumbull... It just open, And I'm so excited that I don't have to drive all the way to Plainesville anymore. The Dolby Atmos in trumbull's theater was so ground shaking, You could literally feel it in your chest when they're riding the worms. There's a lot of height effect in this theater. Especially the scene where they have the birds inside of their mountain, You could literally hear the birds flying above you which was pretty awesome. I'm not sure if plainsville had it set up correctly.
Trumbull used to be 5 minutes from me and plainville was 45 mins. Now plainville is 5 mins and Trumbull is 45mins 🤷🏻♂️
IMAX with CoLa (single 4K projector) is not capable of doing this and is limited to a maximum aspect ratio of 1.90:1
I’ve booked to watch Dune: Part Two in IMAX with Laser GT on a massive 1.43:1 screen followed by Dolby Cinema on the same day. 😎
I’m also considering going a third time to watch the only 15/70mm IMAX film print in Europe.
Can’t wait…
Thanks for this comparison. 🙏🏻
watching it 3-4 times thats a buh
@@MrDragonorp I’ll end up seeing it 5 or 6 times by the time it leaves theaters
I miss LA :'(
I had the pleasure of seeing DUNE in 1.43 iMax 70mm... IT WAS GLORIOUS!
Come visit the AMC Lincoln Square NYC!
Saw in Dolby today. I haven't gone back to see a movie twice in theaters ever (especially since stuff comes out on streaming so quick these days), BUT, I feel I need to go try IMAX for this epic of all epics!
your local IMAX definitely looks like a GT venue, meaning it has the right size screen, just not dual laser projection and/or a working 70mm projector
I'm hitting IMAX in 4hrs woot. Fun video! I'm excited for Dune 2.
I loved the dolby presentation. Dark scenes are rendered well. I can only imagine how IMAX would look without the Dolby vision
I saw it twice in regular IMAX, then I went to see it at the Ft. Lauderdale Autonation theater that's laser IMAX 70mm and surround sound. Holy shit.
I saw it on PRIME and I loved it!! The whole theater was vibrating with the subs
Watched it in AMC Dolby Cinema, the seats would just rattle during the worm scenes. It was incredible
Yeah, the seat rumble was definitely a highlight for me. I especially loved it in short, tense bursts, like during The Voice.
I saw it in IMAX Laser last weekend...fantastic. I'm going to DC tomorrow to see how it is.
saw it Monday in IMAX and --wow! it was amazing!
This is an absurd take. It sounds like you went to a terrible Dolby theater. The one I went to blew my balls off, especially regarding the bass. It was the wildest sound I've ever experienced.
Was thinking this the whole time, I was thinking I was the only one😂 Dolby sound was crazy
I agree. I saw it in both several times and preferred the Dolby experience
this is great video, appreciate the b-roles and the actual aspect ratio comparison instead of you just talking and using stock pictures
The cameras used were IMAX certified, which means they are capable of resolution and AR for the full IMAX experience.
At least in my area the way to experience this movie is in dolby all the way.
im so glad i saw it in Imax first. Was so much better than Dolby the second time.
