A Quiet Place and Edge Tomorrow Best Demo for Atmos because they are specific, dynamic for your height speakers. Problem with many Atmos mixs is u just hear 🎶 score not Dynamic and just Static all speakers playing same music and effects. Many are just like True Dolby or Auro 3D.

In Quiet Place 2 there is a scene where they are in the basement and water slips through from the floor above - that is probably my favorite Atmos moment. You can hear the water above you - love it!
Hi. Great list. As a totally blind film watcher, audio is incredibly important to me and Atmos just takes it to the next level. 2 of my personal favorits, Bladerunner (the original not 2049) and Hacksaw Ridge. BR has incredible atmospherics, you really feel like you're in the city for the whole film or else inside one of the huge echoing buildings. Hacksaw Ridge is another bullets fest and the bass will blow your ears off. However of all the war films I've heard, Hacksaw ridge actually scares me to the point I feel like I have to duck things in a way that 1917 and blackhawk down just never quite managed to achieve for me. Bullets and mortars don't just come from behind or in front, they wizz about on the overheads and take the whole living room apart. If you've not heard that one, it's a very frightening experience in Atmos :)

I actually love James Newton Howard as well, did the hunger games,, Unbreakable etc. Then their are specific soundtracks that stand out to me, Silence of the Lambs, Aliens etc, by different composers but still amazing. I actually find how music for movies is mixed in Atmos really confusing. Some people throw it up on the overheads, some keep it on the lowers, some put it all over the place, there is no rhyme or reason to it. Then again that could be said of so much of Atmos. There are so many films where people simply don't employ the overheads properly at all :)
dont worry about your old videos man. You got here by making them. And I would also mention Gravity for atmos surround audio. Dynamic moving sound during key scenes, and last 15 minutes of the movie, absolutely beautiful.

@@robertfaulkner1824 I don't either anymore. I enjoyed Ambulance for what it was, but it's not something I ever use as demo material, and it's not a film I'll likely ever return to. Midway has some really impressive aerial audio, but the film itself is truly mediocre. Also, Civil War seems to be somewhat divisive story wise (some people don't really get what it's truly about), but when I describe the audio on forums, I compare it to films like Blackhawk Down, The Batman and A Quiet Place.
Excellent list Jeff. The newly released Twister 4K is almost in a class by itself. The opening F5 tornado sequence, in Atmos ,is one hell of a way to open a movie. Funny thing about Ready Player One. It defaults to a DTS-HD 5.1 audio track which is very robust and expanded out by either Neural:X or Auro 3D sounds great even at relatively modest listening volumes. When I switch it over to Atmos I've found that I have to jack my AVR's volume up more than a couple of ticks to let the sound really come alive. I've always thought that, on average, DTS tracks are a bit louder and more dynamic than Dolby tracks. It's too bad that there aren't more DTS:X encoded home releases.
Great list, Jeff. I would give an honorable mention to Lone Survivor and All Quiet on The Western Front. Fantastic ATMOS and loud bass. (Lone Survivor is DTS-X but still sounds amazing)

That's a Solid Bass movie from Start to End and really good Atmos sound overall. Interstellar kicks ass for subwoofer rumble, nothing so far can compare to it.
I first watched Black Hawk Down on the original 2002 DVD using a Pioneer XV-DV303 5.1 system which was the latest & greatest at the time, and it sounded amazing. Glad to see the upgraded 4K Blu-ray still holds up. Sound ages well.
Great choice of Movies. Mission Impossible Fallout is also amazing for Dolby Atmos. It’s up there with TopGun Maverick. I just have a soundbar. I am going to upgrade my soundbar and I will also get a subwoofer and rear speakers.
You also gotta give kudos to 'Hans Zimmer'; he's a GENIUS with his musical scores; like "Man of Steel" and "Dune".... the Atmos in these two movies are off the chain! This is why I LOVE your channel.... your bring it!

It definitely elevated it's position on my top 10 Atmos movies list and the picture quality was incredible as well. Your pick for a subtle Atmos movie(s) of A Quiet Place is not wrong but if I could mention The Invisible Man as my pick for a great atmospheric movie. @@meshalm6480 Peter Jackson’s King Kong is one I remember being impressed by - especially the sound of Kong separating tree branches during the human sacrifice scene and of course the planes circling the Empire State Building.

I appreciate you mentioning Deepwater Horizon. I feel like that's an underrated pick for these Atmos lists. It's the third 4K UHD I ever got, way back in 2017. I barely watched it this year. I upgraded my surround sound system in 2020. Thank god I didn't watch it with my old system. I was not prepared for how robust the sound would be, especially with its deep bass. My house was rockin'.
Just took my home theater up to 7.2.4 With a new AVR(az5000es) and external amp(Basx a5) And all I can say is TWISTER 4K Y.E.S. I hadn't rewatched it in years, but that disc was amazing. One that may be overlooked by a lot of people. But it's truly fantastic, The GREATEST SHOWMAN. If you have an elite home theater, this will absolutely be demo worthy as soon as you pop the disk in, the first scene out the gate will blow your friends alway! The Twister, ready player one, edge of tomorrow's. Are definitely amazing demo worthy movies, but there can be kind of a lot going on all at once, with those type of demos. The greatest showman, is really a home theatre showpiece disc... Warning, do not try this with the Disney plus version. There is a severe difference in audio quality.

Glutamate this about 1917. The scene where he is sneaking thru the city and the shadows on the wall and the soundtrack was impressive. The actual musical score. I haven't been amazed by score in a movie since castaway. Watching those 2 at home? It wowed me again. I love when soundtracks work with a movie

Absolute yes with Twister 4K. I read a piece of trivia that director Jan de Bont gave a note to projectionists instructing them to play the movie at loud volume. That still applies with the Atmos track- you put that movie on, you crank that shit up. WB hit it out of the park! Universal better be ready to match that effort for Twisters on 4K. (Just saw that movie today- it's great!)

Great video Jeff. There will always be differences of opinion but your list definitely includes some awesome films. I also pay attention to the comments and have those on my list.
Could you review the atmos mix for 10 cloverfield lane? It may not be “the best of the best”, but it’s in my top favorites as far as atmos mixes go. I always use it as a reference disc to show off my system. From the sounds inside and above the bunker to the explosive finally, I think this mix does it all. Great usage of surround speakers and bass. The subtle more atmospheric sounds and the louder more action oriented sequences are just really well done in my opinion. I rarely hear this mix spoken of, and it doesn’t get enough praise.

I have a question, I have been thinking of getting a 4K tv but I can’t choose between the two options. Which of the two is better, Samsung or Sony when it comes to 4K experience with movies? Also I mainly collect blu rays, I haven’t gotten into the 4K blu ray movies yet. However I heard that there’s a special 4K upscaling blu ray players that can take your standard blu ray 1080p disc to 4K quality, is this true and what blu ray player would you recommend to have this effect? If anyone else knows please feel free to help me out! Cheers!
Pretty excellent list overall (even though I wouldn't have Twister anywhere near a top 20 for audio), but you clearly haven't watched Civil War yet... I have all of the films on this list, and Civil War absolutely beats all of them in terms of having the most immersive and realistic Atmos experience. You know, there's something to be said about the kind of roller coaster experience you can have with Atmos, but a lot of the films do not come off as realistic. They might be "fun", but they just don't place you inside the setting. Civil War does unlike any other film I've seen so far.
Shoutout to Mad MAX: Furiosa. I know it is not out yet, but if it is even close to what the streaming version was (and it should be better), we are in for a treat. Fury Road was amazing, but Furiosa is on an entire new level. Top Gun Maverick was just "OK". I felt like they could of done so much better in certain scenes, like where the jet took off the carrier for the first time... it just did not hit hard, very washed out. I have that movie on 4K blu ray. I don't have an atmos system yet. But the sound effects is amazing in the film and the bass is unreal. Right from the start it thumps with the sound of Godzilla.
I realize this is a 4k discussion but many of the above mentioned films have Atmos Blu Rays releases as well. Is there a substantial difference between a blu ray Atmos track and a 4k atmos track? Thanks for any information on this topic...
I agree with your list but I got one that is my favorite one as far as dolby atmos sound!!! It is 2012 in 4k blu ray!!!!I It has the most active ATMOS I have ever experienced in my home theater setup!!!!!!!!!!! Have you had a chance to watch it in this format??????????????????
I watched Godzilla X Kong last night and the Atmos on that movie is insanely rich! It's a real treat. I can't wait for my Twister SteelBook to finally show up so I can revel in its goodness.
DTS:X is far better than Dolby Atmos. It’s just not widely used by most releases and it’s so underrated. I dare say even a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 is better than Dolby Atmos. Especially when you up mix it to 7.1 surround sound. I just find DTS as a whole have more powerful base and surround sound mixing in general. Just watch Gladiator 4K, Jurassic Park 4K or the Harry Potter movies in 4K and you’ll know what I mean. But you should have at least a soundbar to test it, otherwise you might not notice much.
@@AlSumait That's a ridiculous statement. Both do the same thing, basically. It depends on the sound mix. Some Atmos mixes (Disney) have weak bass and a lazy static mix, and some are reference quality that will blow your windows out. Same with DTS-X. The sound designers can make the mix sound any way they want. Nothing to do with the format. Nolan's 5.1 mixes sound better than most Atmos and DTS-X mixes.
@@bassage13 Well, then why are most DTS 5.1 tracks are far superior than a lot of Dolby tracks? Yes, I agree that every track is mixed in a certain way depending on the sound designers. But comparing both formats, with my experience having multiple surround sound setups and powerful high end soundbars over the years, I have come to a conclusion that DTS produce way more superior tracks than what Dolby has. I also agree that it has nothing to do with the formats themselves, I’m just speaking from a ratio standpoint between what both have provided over the past few years and DTS has provided more in quantity and quality. Although, I still really enjoy Dolby Atmos and is a really excellent format, I just prefer DTS overall and rightfully so.

Great list. Blade Runner 2049 is still a go-to for me but I know you've already got a villeneuve film on your list. He gets it done but BR2049 is just a better movie than Dune (for me). SPR is essential go-to for me as well. I'm also rocking SVS subs too. Cheers!
I have Soundbar Samsung hw something. And with dolby atmos i can litterly feel the kick. And the soundbar is sooo good. Im using ps5 as 4k player. Love it. 65inch tv. I can say The new hunger games in dolby atmos is insane! Even just with a soundbar.
It really suits war movies. Especially ones with helicopters. Apocalypse now stands out for me not just for the war element but the jungle scenes you really feel like your there with the wind the leaves the bugs and wildlife. It really got me looking g behind me at times thinking bugs were flying around my living room.
I have a noisy road near my house. A quiet place won't work because most movies have quiet scenes. When it is silent, the sound is filled in by the traffic outside the house.

Ambulance and Midway have been my favorite to show off my Atmos system!
Ambulance is one of the better ones for sure. Midway also has tons of excellent scenes, but the films itself is pretty mediocre.

I just picked up the Abyss in 4K Dolby Atmos and the sound mix blew me away. Definitely my new go to demo disc.

I have twister on Blu Ray and my receiver upmixed the sound to neural x and it sounds great to me

Hacksaw Ridge is a great shout, Bad Boys 2 as well and as everybody mentioned Blade Runner 2049. Great list overall.

I was high when I watched 1917 on my system. Holy shit. Also had the hue sync lights going too, immaculate.
We just rewatched The Force Awakens and that Atmos track is fantastic. Jurassic Park has an incredible DTS-X track as well.
Twister sounded effing amazing. The tornado scenes were wild.
I have watched this recommendations in my surround system and they are amazing!!! I do agree you have to experience it in Dolby Atmos . Good stuff!!

Just took my home theater up to 7.2.4 With a new AVR(az5000es) and external amp(Basx a5) And all I can say is TWISTER 4K Y.E.S.
I hadn't rewatched it in years, but that disc was amazing.
One that may be overlooked by a lot of people.
But it's truly fantastic, The GREATEST SHOWMAN.
If you have an elite home theater, this will absolutely be demo worthy as soon as you pop the disk in, the first scene out the gate will blow your friends alway!
The Twister, ready player one, edge of tomorrow's. Are definitely amazing demo worthy movies, but there can be kind of a lot going on all at once, with those type of demos.
The greatest showman, is really a home theatre showpiece disc... Warning, do not try this with the Disney plus version. There is a severe difference in audio quality.

Glutamate this about 1917. The scene where he is sneaking thru the city and the shadows on the wall and the soundtrack was impressive. The actual musical score. I haven't been amazed by score in a movie since castaway. Watching those 2 at home? It wowed me again. I love when soundtracks work with a movie
Ready player one, I agree, is incredible. The car crash scenes where the coins spill out everywhere that is insane!!!! Also Baby driver is great too.

Quiet Place : Day one. The ATMOS is the best thing about the entire movie. Buildings calling around the character with monster footsteps.

Peter Berg also directed Lone Survivor (another Navy SEAL film) so that might be where the confusion comes in.

Don't breathe 2 has great height sounds that are very distinct and I was pretty Blown Away by that Atmos track as far as directional sound and whatnot

I just watched 1917 again recently, movie sounds so good. Another really awesome sounding movie is Furiosa
Ambulance 🚑 and Saving Private Ryan. This are not just great movies with Atmos sound effects but the Atmos sound plays throughout the movies.
Absolute yes with Twister 4K. I read a piece of trivia that director Jan de Bont gave a note to projectionists instructing them to play the movie at loud volume. That still applies with the Atmos track- you put that movie on, you crank that shit up. WB hit it out of the park! Universal better be ready to match that effort for Twisters on 4K. (Just saw that movie today- it's great!)

Twister is pretty good but it has only 2 atmos speaker (top middle) that are on. I wish they make all available.

How did you know I just got an Atmos sound bar? Good timing. I got 2 actually: Bose smart ultra and Sony HT-A5000.
Could you review the atmos mix for 10 cloverfield lane? It may not be “the best of the best”, but it’s in my top favorites as far as atmos mixes go. I always use it as a reference disc to show off my system. From the sounds inside and above the bunker to the explosive finally, I think this mix does it all. Great usage of surround speakers and bass. The subtle more atmospheric sounds and the louder more action oriented sequences are just really well done in my opinion. I rarely hear this mix spoken of, and it doesn’t get enough praise.

Check out the atmos track on Possessor, Brandon Cronenberg's film. It was done by some obscure company but, in terms of an intelligent use of atmos and not just loudness, this one really impressed me.
If you really enjoyed 1917. You should watch Sisu & Fury on 4K. They're mind-blowing !!
Any "best Atmos" list without Fury is not to be taken seriously.

I have a question, I have been thinking of getting a 4K tv but I can’t choose between the two options. Which of the two is better, Samsung or Sony when it comes to 4K experience with movies? Also I mainly collect blu rays, I haven’t gotten into the 4K blu ray movies yet. However I heard that there’s a special 4K upscaling blu ray players that can take your standard blu ray 1080p disc to 4K quality, is this true and what blu ray player would you recommend to have this effect? If anyone else knows please feel free to help me out! Cheers!

Pretty excellent list overall (even though I wouldn't have Twister anywhere near a top 20 for audio), but you clearly haven't watched Civil War yet...
I have all of the films on this list, and Civil War absolutely beats all of them in terms of having the most immersive and realistic Atmos experience.
You know, there's something to be said about the kind of roller coaster experience you can have with Atmos, but a lot of the films do not come off as realistic. They might be "fun", but they just don't place you inside the setting. Civil War does unlike any other film I've seen so far.
Shoutout to Mad MAX: Furiosa. I know it is not out yet, but if it is even close to what the streaming version was (and it should be better), we are in for a treat. Fury Road was amazing, but Furiosa is on an entire new level. Top Gun Maverick was just "OK". I felt like they could of done so much better in certain scenes, like where the jet took off the carrier for the first time... it just did not hit hard, very washed out.

Come on man!! Godzilla king of the monsters is a solid Dolby Atmos movie from start to finish with ridiculous LFE and soundtrack of the Dolby Atmos.
I have that movie on 4K blu ray. I don't have an atmos system yet. But the sound effects is amazing in the film and the bass is unreal. Right from the start it thumps with the sound of Godzilla.

I realize this is a 4k discussion but many of the above mentioned films have Atmos Blu Rays releases as well. Is there a substantial difference between a blu ray Atmos track and a 4k atmos track? Thanks for any information on this topic...

I watched Godzilla X Kong last night and the Atmos on that movie is insanely rich! It's a real treat. I can't wait for my Twister SteelBook to finally show up so I can revel in its goodness.

DTS:X is far better than Dolby Atmos. It’s just not widely used by most releases and it’s so underrated. I dare say even a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 is better than Dolby Atmos. Especially when you up mix it to 7.1 surround sound. I just find DTS as a whole have more powerful base and surround sound mixing in general. Just watch Gladiator 4K, Jurassic Park 4K or the Harry Potter movies in 4K and you’ll know what I mean. But you should have at least a soundbar to test it, otherwise you might not notice much.
@@AlSumait That's a ridiculous statement. Both do the same thing, basically. It depends on the sound mix. Some Atmos mixes (Disney) have weak bass and a lazy static mix, and some are reference quality that will blow your windows out. Same with DTS-X. The sound designers can make the mix sound any way they want. Nothing to do with the format. Nolan's 5.1 mixes sound better than most Atmos and DTS-X mixes.
@@bassage13 Well, then why are most DTS 5.1 tracks are far superior than a lot of Dolby tracks? Yes, I agree that every track is mixed in a certain way depending on the sound designers. But comparing both formats, with my experience having multiple surround sound setups and powerful high end soundbars over the years, I have come to a conclusion that DTS produce way more superior tracks than what Dolby has. I also agree that it has nothing to do with the formats themselves, I’m just speaking from a ratio standpoint between what both have provided over the past few years and DTS has provided more in quantity and quality. Although, I still really enjoy Dolby Atmos and is a really excellent format, I just prefer DTS overall and rightfully so.

Great list. Blade Runner 2049 is still a go-to for me but I know you've already got a villeneuve film on your list. He gets it done but BR2049 is just a better movie than Dune (for me). SPR is essential go-to for me as well. I'm also rocking SVS subs too. Cheers!

I have Soundbar Samsung hw something. And with dolby atmos i can litterly feel the kick. And the soundbar is sooo good.

It really suits war movies. Especially ones with helicopters. Apocalypse now stands out for me not just for the war element but the jungle scenes you really feel like your there with the wind the leaves the bugs and wildlife. It really got me looking g behind me at times thinking bugs were flying around my living room.
I have a noisy road near my house. A quiet place won't work because most movies have quiet scenes. When it is silent, the sound is filled in by the traffic outside the house.
That would be A Noisy Place.
