One thing I really like about you in your videos is that you like to be honest in all the reviews that you have done so thank you and I hope you continues being honest with your audience
I have the gh5s and still getting allote of noise. I just shot a scene at 4k 24p iso at 800 and about a 4 f stop with regular lighting and i have allot of noise can mine be a bad camera
Thanks max, as usual you bring home points with such clarity. I admit I was having a hard time trying to understand Panasonic's reasoning with the GH5s. With this video, I appreciate it now and I finally get it. Thanks!
Loved the way you edited the footage with the actors at the beginning. Beautifully rendered images and very nice story telling. 👏👏👏. Ok now that I've complimented you here comes the ask (LOL)... We're you shooting that footage in 60P? Just curious... Again great job on the edit at the beginning and also thanks for all your hard work making such informative videos.
Thanks! Almost everything was shot in 24p which is my choice when shooting. If you were at 60P you'd need a shutter just over twice as high so anything shot at iso 3200 at 24P would require iso8000.
So we have seen the moire patterns on the GH5-S in certain situations. The DP Review charts seems to show the moire/aliasing right at very narrow frequency areas. "If" (big "if") it's true that this uses a Sony Starvis sensor that employs that unique Sony "quad-RGGB" pixel binning technique,...(using dual exposure times in each cluster) than this "could" be the explanation for the aliasing. Sony's Starvis flyer explains the technique. I gotta say that the noise reduction systems on the camera are superb. When you inspect that Raw image performance, it's "OK"...but the in-camera processed image takes it FAR away from the raw images. (you can also compare raw captures with .jpgs to see just how different they are.) GREAT video Max!
Great video. Can't wait to see your comparison video with the A7R3 or something! I'm still a tiny bit skeptical about the autofocus performance of the GH5S. It might be a tall order to ask Max but if you can compare it to Canon's equivalent camera too, that would be fantastic :)
Oh the Canon will smoke it hands down. Dual Pixel or Phase detection systems are vastly superior for video autofocus. For Photos the GH5, G9, GH5s does great.
Would the jitter that the GH5s seems to solve by getting rid of ibis be reintroduced if using an optically stabilized lens like the Panasonic 12-35? Or would you have to use non optically stabilized lenses in shaky scenarios like when you mount to a car?
Those are some fancy dance moves by Jordan near the beginning lol also, I am impressed that the Sony A line of cameras still stand up. I remember when you did a side by side with 6300 and the A7R2 I believe and the Sony was clean. Good job Sony! lol
I absolutely love your honesty. As much as I want to buy a GH5s, I'm trying to specialize in band size reels, maybe the ibis in the GH5 is better for my purposes.
do you have a sample video for downloading? just to check the quality of 200fps original recording. Is there a huge difference in quality comparing to fs700 slow motion shots?
What do you say, which camera had the best colors in your test? The Sony looked much cooler than the Panasonics in the night scenes outside. So which one was closer to reality?
I know this is a long shot Max but, what do you think of, and could you do a review of the GH5s paired with a Sigma Cine Zoom 18-35mm? This is my wet dream, but i live is a remote island out in the Pacific and cannot test these things as such. I am buying this camera for video beast that it is, but have yet to see any footage of it paired with that specific lens. Fantastic no frills review btw. Really enjoyed this one.
What I can't believe - if you have a look at the AF-test between min. 12 and min. 13 you can see that we Dynamic seems to be way better than the GH5s. How is this explainable?
I knew that I noticed better color and skin tones! Seems like a really great option for the price. Hoping to pick one up at some point for my channel :)
I think the focus isn't right on the GH5, when compared at 6400 and 12800 ISO. Time: 2:09 But still the Gh5s is still a bit better in low light. Great Video Keep up the good work! :)
LOL @ the AF test having Hugh drop down and jump up suddenly. I understand it's a creative solution to try and make the cameras work, but something about it (and him smiling while doing it) was just too funny :-)
Panasonic needs to come out with some new autofocus algorithms. Maybe a slower focus change, hold focus longer, face detection that when it loses focus doesn't start hunting. I hate the strobing focus effect. I love the camera, just can't use autofocus. My FujiFilm X-Pro2 and X-T2 work way better. Maybe Fuji and Panasonic can work together? great video as always!!!
Thank you for the review! Eye of the beholder... As I was thinking about how much I didn't like the auto-focus, 9:44 rolled past and you had a completely different take. Maybe I'm being too picky. I'm just seeing too much micro-hunting (for lack of a better term). The outside shots especially show this rapid micro-hunting on the GH5s, when looking at the bright areas on the left side of the frame while the camera is focusing on Hugh. It would be great if there was a damped mode for video work (maybe a sensitivity setting). Oh well. There's always manual focus.
Spec-Productions there’s a ton of settings you can change for sensitivity and how fast it changes subjects. This test wasn’t great since the lenses weren’t identical.
I was really close to preordering the gh5s but ended up with the sony NX80 camcorder because it works best for me - the PDAF is outstanding and the low light is about the same as a G85 from Panasonic with a f2.8 lens.
7:20 According Andrew from EOSH.com, with GH5s you have an 1.78x crop at every mode (not only cine 4K) instead of an 2.0x crop. www.eoshd.com/2018/02/masters-darkness-panasonic-gh5s-sony-a7r-iii-extreme-low-light/
Leroy Grégory I’ll look into this. Jordan and I tested the GH5s side by side with GH5 at 12mm and only saw a minor difference in UHD but definitely a larger difference in cinema 4K. This is something I’ll do more tests on when I get a GH5s in.
I read through everything and I didn’t see anything specific about the crop being that amount in both UHD and Cinema 4K, just that 16x9 Video is wider than in photo mode (which it is) and that the sensor is 1.78crop for Video but not exactly which mode. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Excellent review Max! Will you do more in depth testing in the future? Also, do you know of the possibility of an IBIS GH5S version existing in the near future? Panasonic's reason for excluding it here make little sense for more than 90% of the buyers.
Great video Max. I love the costume model shots. Thanks for the insight of where Panasonic was coming from removing the IBIS. Personally I think I'm going to sell my GH5 and get an A&R III. I already bought two $1000 Sony lenses from your links. Panasonic color is always a little hit and miss indoors for me. Anyway just do more videos were you talk about the latest upcoming cameras. I could listen to that all day. You don't even need to have the cameras to do it. Keep up the good work.
At 3200 Iso part, GH5 was not focus on the Jordan's face but behind - where it is cleaner than GH5s. All in all, it look that at iso3200 two models are quite comparable, with little bit of edge for more detailed GH5.
Hi Max! Nice review! Please, can you check if the Sigma 18-35+Metabones Ultra is vignetting when is wide open in the GH5s? In your opinion, Is better full frame or native lenses for this camera because of the bigger sensor? Thanks so much! =)
Max hi, do you think its that big of a deal for panasonic to have a phase detection autofocus like a sony a6500 has (instead of a contrast) in their future gh6???
What about anamorphic? I'm not worried about IBIS but the loss of anamorphic is also a big deal. 6k anamorphic uploads to 8k on UA-cam due to the black bars.
Hey Max, Thank you for making this video. I can tell it took a lot of effort, and I appreciate that. A question for you... Is there any way of getting around the vignetting issue of the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and Metabones Speedbooster in DCI 4K on the GH5S? Is there some sort of zoom option that wouldn't reduce quality too much? Curious to read your thoughts on this. Thanks again! - Paul
Max, so there isn’t any metabones speedbooster option, with no vignettes using sigma aps-c art lenses? Since you said the ultra does vignette, I suppose the xl does even more...right?
David Gomes I think you have very little to no vignette if your using the ultra and shooting in UHD. If you go into cinema 4K which uses more of the sensor you do get some.
Hey Max! Thanks for the video. I wanted to ask you for some advice. I usually work with GH5 and Sony A7S II footage, and I mostly work with DaVinci Resolve doing color grading. I need a laptop, because I might be travelling this year; so, do you recommend me a 2017 Macbook Pro for this type of work? Let's say, color grading a 20 min proyect in 4K and having a nice experience? Or, is it better switching to a PC, like Dell or HP. And if so, what PC would you recommend me? Thank you very much!
Can it Do hdr(HLG) 4k 60fps? I'm new to the whole camera thing but I do love the HLG hdr "shot on the gh5" videos on UA-cam they're absolutely stunning on my gs8 and Sony ale oled!
Hi Again - I would like to hear if you think the Sony A6500 is better on a gimbal , than a GH5 (both with IBIS turned on) !?? Cause - im shopping for a B-Cam to my BMPCC -that do 4K (only for post steady trickery , and Slow-mo ... as im delivering in 1080p anyway,- ) and ... ofcouse its going to be ... a little tuff , to shoot in 8bit , after all that beautiful 12 bit raw from my BMPCC,- but.... well- back to my question - do you think that the A6500 , does a better IBIS job , than the GH5, on a gimbal, like my Pilotfly H1+ ,- ???
Well - i know the GH5s is going to be the best - for ANY kind of Theatrical Cinema-like footage ,- but if i had to choose between a GH5 with the IBIS on - and the Sony A6500 with the IBIS on - on a GIMBAL .... ? What would give the best stabilisation - im using MOSTLY MB "SpeedBoosted" vintage Nikon and Minolta primes- so i would like to - well TRY out - the A6500, AND the GH5 - the GH5s is simply out of my allowence money - :-O :D
No brainer. Either gh5 or gh5s. Both support significantly more color depth at 10bit 4.2.2 making for easier heading as well as all intra 400mbs and higher fps. Light light can easily be mitigated with lighting and or speed boosters.
Panasonic's autofocus is not good so the Sony A6500 wins on a gimbal in my opinion. Who cares if you have 10 bit footage if it's out of focus! The A6500 has really good autofocus, and the IBIS works well on a gimbal. The Sony A6500 while a good camera has other issues, like rolling shutter which is bad and poor battery life. No one camera does everything, so different tools for different jobs. I probably shoot more on my GH4 than my A6500, but on the gimbal the A6500 wins for me. I'd have upgraded to the GH5s if it had IBIS and better autofocus, deal breakers for me. Just my opinion.
Feels like a hybrid camera but not photo/video hybrid, but a mirrorless/cinema camera hybrid for video only. As a mirrorless hybrid its way to expensive for what it does, as a B-Cam for Eve-1 users it makes a lot more sense. Either way feels like a niche product. Also it seems the senor is the modified Sony Starvis sensor. A back-illuminated pixel technology used in CMOS image sensors for surveillance camera applications. If Sony can mass produce them for surveillance market, they will come down in cost and no doubt find its way into all kinds of small camera from Sony and whom ever else is using Sony sensors. Could we see Sony RX100 with Sony Starvis sensor in the upcoming year or two? That would be nice. By than they will find a way to get over overheating as well hehehe. :)
So MAx, since I really take your opinion very seriously, which one is better in low light? I think the A6500 is the best buy. In good light it spanks the GH5s, the image it is much more sharp, because it oversamples from 6k. It costs less 1000$. It has IBIS. Better AF... Strangely, the lcd is not fully articulated :(. In a world of vloggers, where people shoot themselves all the time this is nuts/crazy...
If Sony implemented a flip out screen on the A6700 or whatever it will be called, they'll get the lions share of the market. and improve the battery life and you'd have a killer setup. 10bit is overrated IMO. Sometimes its useful, but most users in this price range wont notice the difference.
I'm slightly biased, but I don't really care who is better... BUT; at 2:53 the colors produced by the sony are terrible and why did you stop at 6400 with the sony comparison... You state that the sony was better but what about 12800? Moving on... 3:30 when you get to 12800, I would much rather have the colors of the GH5s.
Ari Sen Anamorphic, timecode, dual card slots, battery life, overheating, 10bit, 4K 60, 1080 240, no 30min record time limits, and I’m sure at least a few more reasons.
I really don't get it?!?!? Where is the "best bang for the buck" here??!?! You are not being truthfull to yourself, Max. The GH5s is a worst camera in almost every area, AF, no IBIS, less detailed 4K video: Those are really the major aspects, to obtain great IQ. IQ is better on the Sony in good light, and even in low light. Should we named it Sony A6500S instead?!?!? And it is cheapper...The GH5s is only for the adamant people that choose micro 4/3 no matter what... let's just hope the Sony comes up with a better body, with fully articulated LCD, touch screen, better IBIS, and no overheating to end this war once and for all...The GH5S is actualy very, very, expensive, for what it offers period...
Filmmakers would rather not have IBIS as it is imperative that all aspects of the picture can be controlled to the most obsessive detail. Not only that the sensor is slightly larger allowing for better coverage, better aspect ratios ect. Simiarly I would put my wages on you not seeing a film production using AF. Focus is one the most important aspects of film and being able to control is is imperative. This is why focus pullers are used. It is a great stills cam but a incredible film-making camera. If I Was going for purley stills I'd have the GH5 or maybe even an Sony, or X-T3. But as a filmmaker it is the best bang for buck camera on the market.
UA-cam compression makes this hard to judge properly. But from what I can see the GH5s seems to have a yellow colour cast whereas the Sony has a red. It also looks as the GH5s has more digital noise but a sharper image. The Sony looks like a bad video camera, saturated and muddy colours.
If Sony will make a flip out screen like Panasonics, then they will kill alot of Panasonics sales! If Panasonic actually makes an AF that works aswell as Canons or Sony's.. Then they will take a huge chunk of marketshares....
GoneFishingStories Panasonic still has the better phone app, built in time lapse, better audio quality, more audio functionality, better menu and file system, better ibis, biggest lens selection, better battery life, best slow motion (240fps gh5s), less rolling shutter, and no random overheating issue. Not 100% sure but idk if any of Sony's cameras have headphone jacks? Anyways, there's a lot things Sony needs to improve on their units.
Totally agree with you. . In a world of vloggers, where people shoot themselves all the time, Sony mirrorless cameras don't offer it.... this is nuts! The A6500 is a better buy. Better AF, IBIS, etc... and less 1000€. The GH5s it is way too expensive. It would be something to consider if it costs around 1300€
I'm not saying one over the other... Guess your panasonic feelings got hurt? I'm just just stating the obvious... If Panasonic does that.. they will gain... If Sony does this.... They will gain... I didn't say one over the other...
Great review Max! I have to admit that I’m actually disappointed with Panasonic. I’ve been a Canon user for 15 years. As a Multimedia Designer I make a living off of both video and photography. I patiently passed on the GH4 because of rumors on the groundbreaking GH5. After the pre-order/purchase of the GH5, and my first move to mirrorless, rumors began to leak in a GH5S. If I knew it was coming out then I would have waited for it. Now I’m stuck with a mediocre photo camera and just as noisy in video as my 10 year old Canon. The way I see it. If I decide to sell the GH5 for the GH5S then I be in the hole by about $1000 for the switch. I know you just have to carry lights to compensate for low lighting conditions with the GH5, but in my past 3 shoots I could not control light since I constantly had to be on the move. I want to see a video where the GH5 out-beats the GH5S in more categories. Otherwise I’ll make the switch to... oh shoot... Fuji X-H1 what?!?!?
still no detailed comparison between the GH5s and the Sony A6500 from you MAx? :( Is this because you don't want to embarrass PAnasonic/the GH5s? ;) ehehhe...
Clean and cinematografic"..that is becouse is the best option right now for filmakers. is not the same to give a lot of light that to give the right light and colors at the same time... Sony for bloggers lumix for filmakers!!!
"Shocking" in the UK usually means terrible/awful, never good. Maybe change that to 'sick' or better, 'fantastic', 'amazing' or 'great', to use an old, unambiguous terms
From the clips you showed the a6500 looked worse in terms of its noise reduction and how it affects the motion. My own experiences of 6300 i dont like it over 3200 and my g85 not over 1250 The gh5s looks impresive, Ibis is a bummer :/
The detail on both of these cameras does not look good here... and I've seen more detailed footage from the GH5 before. Did you leave the in-camera NR and Sharpening on? Cause they should really be turned down as far as possible. They destroy detail.
Peter Paul Chato mainly because I was on a monopod and there was traffic. It’s a freeze frame of video as you see so for a detail test it’s valid. Typically I keep it as video though.
Very interesting. And very sad. GH5 autofocus is like ‘70 years ungharian tecnology. Anyway my question: do you pay actors for your tests? If yes, how much?
please, anyone doing camera tests, do comparison shots of skintones, not side walls of buildings. You'll see a big difference in highlight details on the GH5s into pores.

The GH5 Autofocus is amazing! It tracked the woman in the white hat perfectly at 11:59 - even with Hugh trying to distract the camera.
LOL
Very good quick review! Thanks, Max! Finally, GH5s coverage!
Finally! I hope from now on all these major companies will invite Max to their launch event.
I hope so! 👊
Max Yuryev I find your reviews very informative and honest. Thank you for the hard work!
until he makes an other autofocus test :D

Goddamn, among a million videos, yours was the only one that correctly explained the reason behind the lack of IBIS. Good job!
You do an excellent side by side comparison, Max. This is informative and useful.
Excellent work Max. GH5S footage looks great.
Looks pretty solid at 3200iso

Max Yuryev ok wow thanks. Because the slow motion clips were so clean and jitter free I wouldn't have thought you slowed the footage in post.
I'm seeing this after the fact of getting a GH5s as recommended by the sales person for my requirements. I think he hit the nail on the head.
im here chilling with my g7
Congrats Max.... Really great video produced by you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Surely pinpointing the new potentials of the GH5s 😉😊☺

Why focus is on the background?
Did anyone notice during the autofocus test that the dynamic range was worse on the gh5s
I think the focus isn't right on the GH5, when compared at 6400 and 12800 ISO. Time: 2:09
But still the Gh5s is still a bit better in low light.
Great Video Keep up the good work! :)
Hi Max, between 3:10 and 3:32, no titles of "a6500" and "GH5S" are visible.
At 15:13 "G5S" instead of "GH5S."
Very nice video, though.
Summer2015 ahh! Well for those that are wondering GH5s stayed in the same spot, so Sony on the left.
Great video bro!

Great video Max!
How is the hdmi-out lag?
Does gh5s support tele convertion mode?
Max hi, do you think its that big of a deal for panasonic to have a phase detection autofocus like a sony a6500 has (instead of a contrast) in their future gh6???
Wow might get a Sony 6500 now, good time price wise to do so. The GH5s still looks good and might get one.
Did you hear already about GH5 Shutter angle AF difference? Tried it with GH5s already? :)
Would love to see video about it.
What do you think?
DVX300 camcorder should be out this year with the same sensor and stabilization.
Wow! Pretty impressive!
What about anamorphic? I'm not worried about IBIS but the loss of anamorphic is also a big deal. 6k anamorphic uploads to 8k on UA-cam due to the black bars.
Steve Holt it still has 4K anamorphic capabilities
Hey Max,
Thank you for making this video.
- Paul
I have the GH5S NOW. AWESOME CAMERA
Max Yuryev thanks for the reply Max!
Keep up the good work, looking forward for your tests and review! 😉
Greetings from Portugal
Max, when do you think the A7SIII will be released?
Nice one! See you at NAB again?
I hope so! Not sure if I can make it just yet but I want to.
Suddenly, a Jordan appears!
Do you even white balance?
nevererrrr
That comparison with the Sony is a bit flawed since its crushing blacks slightly and is more contrasty.
Can it Do hdr(HLG) 4k 60fps? I'm new to the whole camera thing but I do love the HLG hdr "shot on the gh5" videos on UA-cam they're absolutely stunning on my gs8 and Sony ale oled!
I love channel crossover!
Please Max, ask Panasonic to allow RAW HDMI out.
GH5 S for sure.. Although I would take an 7R3 over them both.
Just my opinion.
awesome review! I just pre ordered mine (:
Am I wrong? Is this Chelsea Northrup? 0:56 :-D
Bro give a comparison with a7r3 and gh5s
i think the color science is very good now
@CyberPhotoAB shoutout! I Bought my A6500 (and a lot of accesories) from there!
I agree with you. Also, I just hope they come up with a bigger body, so the camera won't overheats :)
Peter McKinnon is using 1DX, no articulated screen.
Peter Mckinnon (I never heard about him sorry ;)) probably don't need to shoot video of him self...
lboymusic I would not bother mentioning him if he doesn't vlog.
So if the a6500 is better in low light, then why even bother with the GH5S? AF and DR are better and it's like $600 cheaper.
Ari Sen Anamorphic, timecode, dual card slots, battery life, overheating, 10bit, 4K 60, 1080 240, no 30min record time limits, and I’m sure at least a few more reasons.
Ouch
It would be something to consider if it costs around 1300€
but no mic input... and this goes on, and on. When it has a flip out screen, it has no mic input, and vice-versa... CRAZY Sony ;)
Its weird that your tech channel is the main and this channel isnt lol.
This has become an incredible low light 4K camera. Add a speedbooster and gain another F stop. Killer cam no argument.
still no detailed comparison between the GH5s and the Sony A6500 from you MAx? :( Is this because you don't want to embarrass PAnasonic/the GH5s? ;) ehehhe...
Haha :) no I’ve just been extremely busy with other work.
Clean and cinematografic"..that is becouse is the best option right now for filmakers.
is not the same to give a lot of light that to give the right light and colors at the same time...
Sony for bloggers
lumix for filmakers!!!
haha, how about dialing the proper WB? ;)
Spotted Tony ;-) You should do some collaborative videos with other youtubers.
"Shocking" in the UK usually means terrible/awful, never good. Maybe change that to 'sick' or better, 'fantastic', 'amazing' or 'great', to use an old, unambiguous terms
Very nice
You really should have a white card for those low-light tests for white balance purposes.
From the clips you showed the a6500 looked worse in terms of its noise reduction and how it affects the motion. My own experiences of 6300 i dont like it over 3200 and my g85 not over 1250 The gh5s looks impresive, Ibis is a bummer :/
Aleksander Haugdal it's sad you can't control iso value on the G85 for video. One of the few reasons I'm buying the g9.
Sony "slightly cleaner in the shadows" BUT with less detail shadow areas. Blacks are more, so GH5s wins imho. 3:32
The detail on both of these cameras does not look good here... and I've seen more detailed footage from the GH5 before. Did you leave the in-camera NR and Sharpening on? Cause they should really be turned down as far as possible. They destroy detail.
Why pull stills when checking video? That’s nonsense. Compare the footage in motion. I’ve heard that’s how video is used.
Peter Paul Chato mainly because I was on a monopod and there was traffic. It’s a freeze frame of video as you see so for a detail test it’s valid. Typically I keep it as video though.
Plus Speedbooster😍
Such an amazing way for a camera to promote a camera lol
Very interesting. And very sad. GH5 autofocus is like ‘70 years ungharian tecnology.
Anyway my question: do you pay actors for your tests?
If yes, how much?
please, anyone doing camera tests, do comparison shots of skintones, not side walls of buildings. You'll see a big difference in highlight details on the GH5s into pores.
yeah pretty good for a micro 4/3 ut nothing compared to the a7sII ... sorry
There's something off about that Panasonic rep... lingering like a KGB agent...
