YodaYeo haha I just said it the way it’s spelt. Thanks again for your discovery. It sucks that we have to do this little trick to make it actually work correctly. But a lot of people will be happy with this work around!
thanks for this. what are the downsides to changing the shutter angle to 179 degrees? sharpness or anything else affected? I've learnt in life that for every "patch" that there is usually a trade-off / side effect. I'm using the FZ-2500 at the moment, but am budgeting for a camera with interchangeable lenses that can do at least 60fps in 4k and 120fps in 1080p. Was looking at the GH5. The 4/3 system also seems to have more reasonably priced lenses
Honestly, 1° doesn't make any difference to anything other than the focus system. It's more of an understanding of how the camera seems to work best than anything else, no real trade off's.
thanks so much - I'm vlogging my emigration to New Zealand from South Africa and the GH5 seems awesome! All the others seem to have one or the other trade-off.
This is a killer tip and fix. 179 was awesome. I was concerned about 150 in the other vids on UA-cam but this is absolutely usable and proof that the AF can be solid if Panasonic resolves in the next firmware update. Awesome job!
You, sir, just saved my life. I'm about to buy this camera for my channel and if I realised the AF was that bad I would've flipped. Thanks for the fix!
179 deg shutter It not only make the focus faster, it actually makes the focus pull smooth, fast, and natural!I found the 255 focus point mode works best. The other focus settings are faster, but seem to pulse more.
I noticed this once I started using synchro scan a lot. I always keep it enabled now . But this is PROOF it actually works. I’m so happy you put this out to let ppl know because this actually does work
It's actually pretty wild. It's still not perfect like Canon DPAF but it's like a whole new camera. You can actually hear the motor focusing way faster at 179d vs 180d (1/60) for 30fps.
I hope Panasonic will provide an update. It would be nice if we can get this focus consistently throughout any frame rate or shutter angle. Right now, what we are doing is a workaround with minor compromises that work in some modes. Not what I expect from a $2000-$2500 2017-2018 camera.
So a dude just using the camera beat a multi-billion dollar company with sick-ass R&D! Ha! The 179 was a massive massive improvement. Crazy. Thanks for sharing and hopefully someone at Panasonic has a good think to themselves and fixes this in a firmware update.
Great work and I admire your honesty. I know a few people who would take credit for it and even claim they found it first. Seems like 179 is the magic number.
Love it. I do product reviews and was really disappointed with the Gx8 that I just bought. Same issues as the Gh5. Today I am taking the Gx8 back and trading up for the gh5. This trick/fix will make a huge difference.
I wouldn't call it a fix, it's more like a user workaround.. Panasonic should have made a camera with an AF system that works just as good at a 180 degree shutter angle because they know that's exactly how people are going to setup their camera if the're going to shoot video with it. I'm glad for GH5 owners that there is a workaround to get decent AF out of this camera but Panasonic should really step up their game and fix this properly with a firmware upgrade.
I agree. But its also a hardware issue. Phase detection is so much better than contrast detection when it comes to moving subjects with low contrast. The crazy thing is how well the AF system works in Photo mode. Its really fast and accurate.
big dof you mean.. I disagree though, with M43 you can also get very small dof on longer focal lenghts, the reason it would be slower on aps-c and full frame would have more to do with the fact that those lenses would have more glass to move but I don't think the difference would be very big, Panasonic has a lot of experience with making advanced contrast defection algorithms and I think it would scale perfectly fine to bigger formats / sensor sizes
Thanks so much!! I just tested it as soon as I saw this video and it appears to be working. I used the tracking auto focus with me on one side of the screen. The GH5 has always had a super hard time with this shot which was super aggravating. Just an FYI for anyone setting this up you have to put the camera in shutter priority mode for video not the S on the dial and it will then allow you to adjust the syncro scan. Also my video I turned the exposure down about -1/3. Anyway, glad I was subscribed already or I might have missed this video. I wish I could leave you a video response like you could in the old days of UA-cam. Anyway cool trick thanks!
So I have a burning question... and not about the autofocus fix, although great job Yoda Yeo! If, before this fix, everyone was running around shooting with a 180 degree shutter, what did you do to knock down the light at larger apertures, and especially if you're shooting V-log outdoors? The two main ND solutions have major drawbacks for me: 1. Vari ND filters - these are great until you change lenses and also have to spend the time unscrewing the filter and screwing it back onto the new lens if you remember to do it. This also assumes that you have adapted all the filter threads of all your lenses to the same size so you can swap filter between lenses, or I guess the super expensive option is to buy Vari-ND for every lens which is great until you're in a low light situation and forget the ND on the front of your lens. Option 2. - Matte box and ND filter set. Aside from matte-boxes being either really expensive, or really cheap and very badly made to the point you just want to throw it down the stairs; Once you have attached the matte box (presumably with LWS bars), the problem here is that the whole rig becomes bigger heavier and generally less portable for run and gun style shooting. It also makes the camera REALLY conspicuous so throws the option of street videography out of the window. Although a good matte-box stops direct light from hitting your ND (which is SO nice). I ask this question because after trying both these options for ND I have found myself often just throwing the 180 degree shutter rule out of the window if I'm in a situation where I don't have time to be messing with the gear. I make sure the shutter is at least expressed in degrees so that the shutter speed is always a factor of the frame rate. But to be honest no one really notices when I do use faster shutter speeds (clients), especially if the content is destined for nowhere more than social media etc. I find that the ability to maintain a good exposure at the aperture you actually want, rather than need, to be much more impactful on the perceived quality (by my clients) of the footage than any motion blur or lack thereof. Would love to know peoples' thoughts on the matter, but you know, only from people who actually earn money from what they shoot. No pixel peepers or lens collectors please. Thanks
Elliot Lowndes I have 2 ND filters and step up rings. That’s how I’ve done it forever until I bought my C200 which has built in variable Nd. It’s obviously a pain to swap Nd filters but it’s what you gotta do to save $$$.
Well I wouldn't believe it unless I saw it with my own eyes. It does seem to be alot more responsive. But It's still not as good as Canon DPAF or Sony A6300/A6500 AF
You should try in a lower light situation, full sun with plenty of light, cameras all focus better. Although it looks much improved. If the A7sIII does not have 60p 4k, I will get a GH5s.
Thanks for running the test! It's going to be interesting to see what Panasonic does with this. Also, why is your image dark on this video? It seems like the gamma is just really low.
I believe it only works for 30p and 25p (PAL region). no difference in 60p either. and 24p no improvement. Then again, 60p had the better AF before this hack over 24/30p.
Last year I bought a Canon 80D instead of the GH5 because I need good auto focus as a single shooter, but if this is as good as it's cracked up to be I might get one. The C200 that I would like is way out of my price range.
Zed ProMedia Good video, good to hear the GH5 autofocus can be fixed. I have a dumb question for you. When I am about to start shooting in Motion picture mood the screen does not show what is in front of me but the aperture, shutter speed iso and other figures how do I changes. Even more weird it allows me to press record and nothing.
Crazy that a youtuber was more effective at getting a reliable AF out of the gh5 than all of panasonic's engineers. At the end of the day this is more of a hack/workaround than a real fix. A "real" fix would have been for panasonic to make it work at 180 as that's how most people shoot, or to have learned from their screw up and put phase detect in the gh5s
I dont think so, Lumix does not need Phase Detect, only a good algoritm. The tech is already inside, is done, but not documented, maybe because is not yet working on 24p
Regarding the "not enough time to focus" explanation, I have 2 questions. Does the fix work using a 181 degree shutter angle? If it does, that would make me think there's something other than "not enough time" to focus going on. Why does a 1/60 shutter speed work fine focusing when running 30 fps? 1/60 shutter speed and a 180 degree shutter are the exactly same thing at 30 fps. Why do we get different results? I'm hoping that there's a firmware update in the works to correct a bug in the focusing algorithm. Also, has anyone else noticed that there's no info coming from Photo Joseph or any other Panasonic Ambassadors? Could it be that Panasonic has asked them not to comment until they figure out what's happening.
I wanted to try this on my omd em5-ii hoping for similar improvement. How does shutter angle (which I can't set) translate to shutter speed? If I'm shooting 60p, instead of 120ss I lower the ss? Thanks!
Peter Hsu yeah yeah I know. I just didn’t want to reshoot the whole thing again because the test was pretty conclusive. So just ignore and replace “rule” with “angle”. I didn’t notice I said it that much till after I started editing and I was cringing haha.
Reinus Cameron with 180d shutter it will always be double your frame rate. With 179d shutter angle it will always be double your frame rate but just slightly faster than double. And I mean slightly. For example 30fps with a 179d angle would probably be like shutter speed close to 1/64
Zed ProMedia I’ve been toying with the X-E3, and the auto focus is spectacular every time with any old lens. The GH5 is more suitable for video though. Totally welcoming any improvements to the auto focus system.
cuckoomusic yeah the Fuji af system is pretty good but something about it always feels incomplete or off for video. They have the new xh1 being announced in a couple days (already leaked) but I’ll see how it holds up. Just something about the gh5 that feels right for video even if the af sucks haha
Zed ProMedia yeah! Agreed. I’ve been using the GH5 since launch, and it performs really well. (I never use AF though) For my work (synthesiser tutorials) I also need the long recording times that the GH5 handles with ease.. So even the new X-H1 won’t do it in that regard. But the dream of an in camera magical film stock that solves skin colours, dreamy shadows, silky gradients, tackles mixed lights etc... that dream still prevails. Super excited about the Eterna film simulation. I’m wondering what it’ll be like!
So you're saying that people are dumb for setting their cameras to 180 degree shutter angle? That's how you supposed to set your camera for video. It's not the fault of the people, it's the fault of Panasonic engineers that their AF system doesn't function properly at 180 shutter angle. This is just a workaround that a user discovered by accident.
tsociety I think this is about the phase auto focus bring in sync with the frames but it has nothing to do with the frames has it? He does not film at 179 fps. I don’t own a GH5. 179 seems to work. Who knows if the software is odd or something... I just say I would not simply buy the camera and say the camera is bad before having tried kind of every option
GH5 doesn't have phase detection. The contrast AF detection processing just doesn't seem to keep up when the camera is set to 180 degree shutter angle (this just keeps the shutterspeed at 2x the video framerate). When set to 179 the processing is able to keep up much better resulting in much better AF. I just wouldn't say this is the fault of people because they are just using the camera the way it's supposed to for optimal video quality.
So from what I've seen in different videos now on this topic, you can't do this trick with 24fps or 120/240. So you still have a cinema like camera that can't shoot in cinema like frames with auto focus. I wouldn't be too thrilled.
I just tried with the sigma 18-35 with the metabones speed booster ultra 0.71x and its super noisy AF (you won't be able to use onboard audio). Works Just Ok when lighting is ideal and bad when its poorly lit. Hope that helps.
I have a GH5S with viltrox speed booster + sigma 18/35. Firmware updated. Unfortunatelly autofocus still being not good enough with them, specially in low light environment. I’m going to use them only in studio with manual focus.
Its kind of an old term. But the “shutter angle” is a way of describing the shutter speed relative to the frame rate. It goes back to rotary shutters, where a disc with an angled opening would spin and let in light once per revolution to expose each frame.
Shutter Angle is what most pros film makers use it's basically Shutter Speed. The difference is that it is based on how much of the frame is open to light (i.e. 180 degrees allows half the light in). I prefer Shutter angle to shutter speed as once you set it to around 180 degrees you don't have to rework it when you change frame rates like you do with shutter speed because 180 is 180 regardless of the framerate you choose. Hope this was helpful
That's what we need guys, spread the word. :)
I yeah i forgot to mention you are the first to actually say my user name correctly... :)
YodaYeo haha I just said it the way it’s spelt. Thanks again for your discovery. It sucks that we have to do this little trick to make it actually work correctly. But a lot of people will be happy with this work around!

Great looking footage. In that snow, everything exposed perfectly, smooth higlights rolloff, great dynamic range. Gh5s is da bomb
This is a killer tip and fix. 179 was awesome. I was concerned about 150 in the other vids on UA-cam but this is absolutely usable and proof that the AF can be solid if Panasonic resolves in the next firmware update. Awesome job!

179° work the best, seems like dual pixel af, pretty fast and smooth
Is there really a difference between 24p and 25p?
One of the better channels on YT by far
Thanks for sharing your experience
haha holy crap is right. Impressive! Looks good! Thanks for doing the test!
So a dude just using the camera beat a multi-billion dollar company with sick-ass R&D! Ha! The 179 was a massive massive improvement. Crazy. Thanks for sharing and hopefully someone at Panasonic has a good think to themselves and fixes this in a firmware update.

Yes that's true, especially in single AF for photos nothing is faster than Panasonic's DFD focus system I think.

Wow. I don't even have one but this is significantly improving my desire, especially for an affordable 4k camera.
Thanks for the video really helpful! People must have thought you were a freak just walking around aimlessly in the snow though hahaha
Great work man!
Thanks so much!! I just tested it as soon as I saw this video and it appears to be working. I used the tracking auto focus with me on one side of the screen. shoot in m mode and you have full control, why let the camera decide anything
How could Panasonic have missed this fix? They should incorporate it into a firmware update to make it easier to turn on and off in video mode.
YES!!!! I am excited to see this!! Looking forward to purchasing the GH5 in a few weeks!! Great Video

Everyone seems to confuse shutter angle with syncroscan. It’s clear that the shutter angle is a factor but not clear how the syncroscan factors in.
holly balls... that AF tracking really works now.....
Damn! Thank you so much. 179 FTW!
Lee so many people love this camera I am glad for them, your the only one I trust and if you say its really better I believe it! ; )

Realy great job dude ! and i'm a fuji user but that's realy dope for all the panasonic users =)
My comment was the 180th!!! I think you have something there! Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for posting this. It really works!
Probably gonna get made fun of but- staying with 179 means I can't use auto exposure anymore? Have to stick with manual?
great test, absolutely visible difference
My good sir, thank you!
Wow! How has Pana missed this?
holy... that’s what I need, thank you so much
Great video mate, thanks for sharing the info. Would love some Audio equipment vids too mate, recommendations and where to start etc for us novices :D
This is brilliant, thanks mate.
I liked this video so much i gave it three thumbs up. lol
uhhhhhh, that third 'thumb' isn't a thumb.... heh heh
Very interesting test and discovery! Thanks for sharing the info.
Thanks for running the test! It's going to be interesting to see what Panasonic does with this. Also, why is your image dark on this video? It seems like the gamma is just really low.
One year later and they havnt done a single thing to correct AF... Or even acknowledge it. Lol
It works! Thanks dude
The box area focus works well in 24p, but face tracking is still slow in 24p (at 179 degree shutter angle).
Michael Ma yeah it only works in 30-60fps no change in 24fps.
I believe it only works for 30p and 25p (PAL region). no difference in 60p either. and 24p no improvement. Then again, 60p had the better AF before this hack over 24/30p.
Quite big improvement.
This is a great video! What lens did you have on at time of filming?
12-35mm f2.8 ii
Ha, I'm going to go check it out.
Last year I bought a Canon 80D instead of the GH5 because I need good auto focus as a single shooter, but if this is as good as it's cracked up to be I might get one. The C200 that I would like is way out of my price range.
Holy shit it wasn’t a scam
Great video, excellent help man.
Thanks so much! Time to get a gH5
Holy crap! Isn't the ND filter helping the AF? Can you test it again without the filter? Maybe in other light conditions?
cgkao The Nd filter will not help the AF. It’s on so that I can keep my aperture at f2.8.
Zed ProMedia Good video, good to hear the GH5 autofocus can be fixed. I have a dumb question for you. When I am about to start shooting in Motion picture mood the screen does not show what is in front of me but the aperture, shutter speed iso and other figures how do I changes. This is great men!!!! TNX

Thanks for the heads-up!
Any word if this also works with a Metabones to EOS?
Great! Thanks for sharing!
Thankyou for the test! Wich glass did you used in the Test please?
12-35 ii
Zed Pro Media ...you are meaning the Canon ore the Panasonic 12 - 35 ?? Thanks!
Pretty sure Canon doesn't make a 12-35 lens. It is a native Panasonic lens bhpho.to/2GyEf7X
Zed Pro Media Absolutly right, I was meaning the Canon 16 - 35 EF L...😊
Great video, what adapter do you use? thinking of getting the GH5 was worried about auto focus and I have mostly Canon L glass.
Regarding the "not enough time to focus" explanation, I have 2 questions. Does the fix work using a 181 degree shutter angle? If it does, that would make me think there's something other than "not enough time" to focus going on. It is very odd isn't it? You would think Panasonic would be all over this wanting to sell more GH5s..
Does this work using Canon lenses with the metabones speedbooster?
Joel Adrian Harris did you find anything on this?
Was an ND filter used? Thanks dude
njcreative always.
@Lee Zavitz Does "179 rule" still work after 2.5 firmware on GH5?
I wanted to try this on my omd em5-ii hoping for similar improvement. How does shutter angle (which I can't set) translate to shutter speed? If I'm shooting 60p, instead of 120ss I lower the ss? Thanks!
at 60p, instead of 1/125 should be 1/160
Hey guys :-)
what would you recommend for 50 and 60fps ? Also 179dg or different angle ?
180 degree "Rule" means something else. You mean 180 degree shutter angle.
Peter Hsu yeah yeah I know. I just didn’t want to reshoot the whole thing again because the test was pretty conclusive. So just ignore and replace “rule” with “angle”. I didn’t notice I said it that much till after I started editing and I was cringing haha.
So the auto focus works better with GH5s?
Goog shit man!!! Thank you so much!!
what lens were you using on that video the focus sounds loud
THANK YOU. (holy shit)
I AM REJOICING HARD RN YESSSSSSS
Synchro scan is greyed out for me. Does this only work in certain settings? only Manual? Not P as far as I can see...GH5
hie mate !
what mic did you use??
Greats from FRANCE!!
what was your audio setup in this video?
What's the difference between Shutter angle & Shutter speed?
But setting it at 179d, how do you know what shutter you are at when you’re in different frame rates?
Reinus Cameron with 180d shutter it will always be double your frame rate. With 179d shutter angle it will always be double your frame rate but just slightly faster than double. And I mean slightly. For example 30fps with a 179d angle would probably be like shutter speed close to 1/64
Wow.. from totally unreliable to useful. Gonna have to try this.
cuckoomusic yeah pretty crazy eh?
Zed ProMedia I’ve been toying with the X-E3, and the auto focus is spectacular every time with any old lens. The GH5 is more suitable for video though. Totally welcoming any improvements to the auto focus system.

Great video
Does it work with the GH4?
Are you using firmware 2.2?
How can you set the AF personal (video)?? It tells me impossible to set! Why??
This is awesome and I feel bad for so many people just do not seem to know how to set up their expensive cameras and say it is no good
auroraflash 0
So you're saying that people are dumb for setting their cameras to 180 degree shutter angle? That's how you supposed to set your camera for video. It's not the fault of the people, it's the fault of Panasonic engineers that their AF system doesn't function properly at 180 shutter angle.
No, the autofocus should work at 180. It's a very commonly used shutter angle. This issue is Panasonic's issue not the users.
Thank you
I can't get i to work fast with the 25 f1.7? Any help?
he looks like jonah hill into cameras
Try doing it against a black background.
anyone know if this is still necessary in 2020 or did panasonic update the firmware to solve it?
Very impressive ! How to update my gh5s ?
Nice!
So from what I've seen in different videos now on this topic, you can't do this trick with 24fps or 120/240. So you still have a cinema like camera that can't shoot in cinema like frames with auto focus. I wouldn't be too thrilled.
Firmware bug. Good catch
Hey Zed, Does this work with the Sigma 18-35mm???
I just tried with the sigma 18-35 with the metabones speed booster ultra 0.71x and its super noisy AF (you won't be able to use onboard audio). Works Just Ok when lighting is ideal and bad when its poorly lit. Hope that helps.
I have a GH5S with viltrox speed booster + sigma 18/35. Firmware updated. Unfortunatelly autofocus still being not good enough with them, specially in low light environment. I’m going to use them only in studio with manual focus.
Will this work for the panasonic G85?
Using 179 degree with 50p too?
The hell is shutter angle?
Its kind of an old term. But the “shutter angle” is a way of describing the shutter speed relative to the frame rate. It goes back to rotary shutters, where a disc with an angled opening would spin and let in light once per revolution to expose each frame.
It's explained here very well: ua-cam.com/video/dQw4w9WgXcQ/v-deo.html
Dang Tsociety... your a salt bag...
Hope this was helpful
just got rick rolled....
What lens did you use?
Robby Huang 12-35 f2.8 ii
Well done...
Does this works with g85 or gx85 or the new gx9?
Wow perfect
So does it work for 24fps or only 30 & 60?
Please upload a video using 179 and 60fps
What lens is that
what is shutter angle?
