Superfoods - is healthy eating just hype? | DW Documentary

  • Are superfoods all that they’re cracked up to be? There’s plenty of worldwide hype about eating chia seeds, goji berries and quinoa - but what benefits do they really bring?
This documentary looks at what superfoods do for people and more. How is the healthy eating boom influencing agriculture and business? There are more and more restaurants serving superfoods in Germany. Florian Klar of Bochum opened the first superfood bistro in the Ruhr region about a year ago. He buys in all types of food, using local suppliers when he can, but he also uses exotic superfoods in his meals.
Quinoa, goji berries and chia seeds can now all be found in supermarkets as well. The food industry has discovered selling these products is lucrative and changed its product selection accordingly. Superfoods are simply that a foodstuff contains a high amount of nutrients. "Every country has its own superfood,” says nutritionist Matthias Riedl. Blueberries, flax seed, blackcurrants, and kale are all superfoods native to Germany.
The film also takes viewers to Bolivia, a key quinoa exporter, to see how the hype has influenced farming there. Exports of the so-called "Inca corn” quadrupled between 2007 and 2013. The rising price of quinoa on global markets has led Andean farmers to increase the size of their fields. Yet after just two straight years of quinoa harvests, the soil is already exhausted and barren.

I’m from one of the countries where avocadoes grow naturally and I can say that 11 years ago they were easy for us locals to buy and affordable, now because they reserve the best for export it’s been difficult to get good avocadoes. The worst part is that they’re importing bad avocadoes from neighboring countries which we have to pay elevated prices for. Then our natural grown are extremely expensive too, we pay 3x the price for bad avocadoes while the countries we export to, pay what we used to pay for top quality avocadoes. Crazy and ridiculous.

The key lesson here is to go for local produce from your area or nearby regions. I am from India, and we have a rich variety of green vegetables, but somehow the urban rich wants to eat vegetables grown elsewhere like zucchini or kale because it is exotic. It's just crazy. Transporting everything, even food, from far away continents is adding to our global carbon footprint.

Yes I agree with you... if it is possible, we must try to eat form local production . But things are not black nor white... not "everyone" that buy "foreign" food for being "exquisit" or fool ... It is not just advertisement influence or trend as we watched on these video... also has to do that nowadays many people has "roots" from somewhere else. Korean living in Australia definetely will carve for kimchi, even napa cabagge is not grown locally over there (at least not as easily), or a Mexican in Arabia will carve for Habanero, Jalapeño, or Poblano peppers... It is reasonable to get some ingredients from outside (I grow my own veggies, and my ancestors are from far away, so "my cooking recipes" need certain things that even I try to grow mostly all but some are impossible... cause certain plants need specific conditions that I cannot provide...). Some cravings comes "from the taste" that you were taught since childhood are delicious or invites his/her memory to the served table.

I'm still laughing at the kale hype & it's funny to see you refer to it as exotic, although i guess for you it is. In my country it's been a staple food for ages. Just like potatoes, quinoa can be grown in Northwestern Europe. I've done it myself.
While i do think it's wise to & i do try to buy most of my food local, i think it's troubling to say to people that ALL of it should be. Otherwise many people would never eat a banana.
This documentary basically rips into large unsustainable mono-culture farming. Great!
But it skips over the largest unsustainable mono-culture farming on the planet & the biggest threat to our life as it is on earth.
      *Factory farming.*
People might think they buy local meat from local animals, but those animals have been fed with grains & soy that's been grown in & is destroying the rain-forests of South America. Giving us a triple wammy; the transport around the world, the greenhouse gasses emitted by the cattle & the cutting down of the trees we so desperately need for our climate stability.
What people should do is eat lower on the food chain. Eat the peasant food of their country for most of their diet & supplement that with a bit of "exotic" food. Which can be kale for you & kurkuma for me.

sayan: Yes, I agree. Here in California, USA, we have shortages of water all the time. But our farmers are using a lot of water to grow bean sprouts, which are then shipped to China. When our water shortages get really bad, individuals and families have restrictions on how much water we can use. We are told to not water lawns, take shorter showers and to only flush are toilets when there is, um, brown stuff in them. But nobody is regulating agriculture, so they can grow water intensive crops, and then export them all, if that is the fastest way for them to make the most money.

People like to make healthy eating much more complicated than it is. It doesn't need to be glamorous, "super" or "exotic" to be healthy. Just go to your supermarket or farmer's market, load up on cheap veggies, and the kitchen essentials and you've already come much further than these rich instagram hipsters have.
Buy local, eat local and you will get even more variety than you could have imagined. The produce varies greatly from season to season which ensures a varied and balanced diet.

Children in Yemen are literally eating their own hands because of failed European food policies.
Except it is not as simple as that. Some people can't go to grocery stores and they have to pay 3x the price for bad "cheap" veggies because they export the good ones overseas for people like you to say to just buy cheap veggies. Funny how humans will make everything worse for everyone else as long as "me and mine" are taken care of.
This includes "local farmers markets" because most of our farms are own by companies (some are foreign companies at that). And then you have companies like Monsanto that sue people for "their" plant making other babies in other farms (because pollen spreads through the wind). Forcing other farmers to destroy their crops so they can't be sold at a local farmers market.

    • @DimaRakesah
      @DimaRakesah 3 роки тому +19

Exactly what I was thinking. Healthy or unhealthy, the problems in this documentary are ones that can happen to any food product. Misleading marketing, lack of education regarding nutrition, exploitation of farmers, soil depletion, etc. These are all valid issues in our supply chain for just about any agricultural product, and we need better regulation, laws and labeling to help improve conditions and environmental factors. This is not a reason to write off eating healthy. Unhealthy foods are no better in these areas.
I am also wary of the way this compares one food to another based on only 2 or so nutritional attributes. For example, chia vs flax. Both are great, but it makes it seem like chia is pointless. It completely overlooks the reasons one might use chia instead of flax, such as in chia pudding. Chia is softer, better for certain foods, whereas flax is more gritty. Why not have both as an option? They are both healthy. Or dry Goji berries vs raw blackcurrants. They only compares the calories and vitamin C content. Sure, blackcuurrants are higher in vitamin C, but goji berries are significantly higher in vitamin A, protein, some B vitamins, fiber and calcium. This comparison is just misleading. A variety of foods helps to cover your nutritional needs, not binging on one food because it has higher in one vitamin. Eat healthy foods, eat a variety, read your labels and learn about the foods you're eating.

I kinda agree with you and I also practices the same since the longest time. I eat healthy and balanced, and with joy, meaning I actually enjoy my food. That's most important.
There will be endless and baffling lists of healthy "nuts and vegies", like what some people are really into. But I just believe if I can enjoy seasonal items and eat them in a balanced way then I'm having healthy eating.
My sister was living very unhealthily on snacks, sweet junks, coffee, etc and suddenly turn a 180 and insists on microgreens and now acts like she's having the healthiest food habits. And I really think going to extremes from point A to point B is kind of useless. All vegies and fruits are healthy, not just some selected few, picked zealously. And eaten with a "holier than thou" attitudes. That would suffering be orthorexia, another form of eating disorder in which its suffering from another obsession (of eating clean).
Edit: I was also never into fancy health foods like those colorful granolas or fancy protein green smoothies, etc (which were discovered to be shockingly fattening in reality, up to 2000 calories++). And I find fad diets tiresome to follow.

The central issue isn’t if a food is superfood or not. The central issue is the evil trident behind 'modern' agriculture:
      1- Monoculture
      2- Chemical herbicides
      3- Desertification
Land monopoly and transport of goods (for example chilean avocados going all the way to the US or californian lettuce going all the way to NY) are also big problems.
This is happening at a global scale, 20-40 years from now we will have a planetary disaster, hence the official start of the apocalypse foretold by religions: covid-19. The next 3-10 years will be disaster after disaster until humans across the world start changing their level of consciousness.
It isn't the planet that's on danger, it is US, humans that will have to decide if we want to be allowed on this planet or not.

I went vegan my first few months into community college and I really lucked out on my cafeteria. My first year was fantastic. I believe it was so good because there's a culinary degree on campus. The head chef was the best. He would see me and tell me every day what was or was not vegan even though admittedly every day I couldn't afford to buy my whole meal. Pack a lunch and sub with a little bit of soup or salad. I really admired him. He had a suggestion board. What he was really proud of and for good reason was working with very local farmers and cutting down food waste. He had pamphlets on how to cut down food waste and shop locally and seasonally. The next year he left the food was bad. It only go worse with time. I hope he is doing well all his food was nutritious, good for you, and sustainable and he thought about all the students

A microbiology professor told our class that the closer the food has been grown the more bioavailable it is to the body because it has adapted to the same environment you are living in. If that's true, then surely we should be focusing on eating locally rather than shipping food overseas. It's the same as commuting to work many miles, when many people could work closer to home. We'd be better off being more organised.
I for one, must pass about 50 schools until I get to the one I work in. I believe in freedom of choice, but sure it would be better to not pollute our environment at the rate we are heading. Eventually the print on the labels will be so small and illegible in order to fit information such as 'distance travelled, and countries it travelled through' to justify the price tag. 😂

One reason that quinoa became popular as a so-called superfood (maybe the main reason) is that it is a complete protein i.e. it provides all the essential amino acids that the body cannot produce itself (unlike most vegan food). This is important although not essential to vegans (since it is easy to get them all eating a mix of different proteins) and this is possibly one reason why it came to prominence in the West about the same time that veganism became more popular. This important characteristic of quinoa should have been mentioned when they were comparing quinoa to millet and coming up with an underwhelming assessment of quinoa. Interestingly soybeans (and therefore tofu) are another useful complete protein source but they have a much less glamorous image.

I tend to use wheat or oats (for food, which is boiled like rice), or potatoes and carrots etc. in stews. It's honestly a good practice. I try to get things that are local. I eat apples, pears, strawberries, blueberries, blackberry, raspberry instead of bananas, pineapple etc. And try to incorporate seasonality into my cooking. fresh sallads are a taste of summer, while stews, soups etc with potatoes, carrots and brocolli etc are a thing of winter. what I use mainly are exotic spices with long shelf life, with hopes that this will not cause too much demand or harm to the landscapes.

Most of those “superfoods” are very, very expensive, in large part because they are brought from so far away. Carrots, spinach, onions and peas are not that expensive and they still very good for you. I won’t buy expensive quinoa from the other side of the world very often, not when whole grain barley and oats are readily available and very nutritious.
I still enjoy occasional expensive “superfoods.” And we are fortunate in having our own productive blueberry bushes.

Local fruit and veg and in-season is the only way. We have had a fad in Europe for Avocado Pears, that come from the west coast of U.S. and South American countries, for example. MOST fruit and veg we eat is either held in freezers creating tons of C02, or are transported 1,000s of miles on ship and plane, creating tons more C02. In the UK you should be eating pears and apples, not bananas and oranges (top 2 selling fruits in the UK!)!
But it all barely matters, as climate change will force much less food in more areas. In 2020, we have lost wine, fruit and vegetables in California, the SW U.S. generally and the Midwest, due to wild-fires and drought. This loss of food production in Africa is causing wars to start over resources. In just a decade, scientists have said food production will be 65% of what it is now. That's billions starving and WWII type food rationing elsewhere. Most people have no idea of changes coming to our lives in just 10-15 years!

Very good information to know. What I'm also interested in is, when is the burden of responsibility going to be taken from the consumer and placed on the manufacturers and marketing hype men? Just like with our plastic problem, there's a limited amount of power the consumer has when companies are allowed to keep pumping out all this unsustainable stuff without hinderance. Stop making consumers feel guilty and get onto lobbying for manufacturers to have more rules to follow. Consumers are already recycling, turning off lights, not eating meat... what good are these massive global corporations doing?

The lesson here is clear: supporting local and regional produce can not only benefit us but also reduce our carbon footprint.
