My pain doctor (who is also a true expert in metabolism) who has now become one of my closest friends, did research into caffeine after I told him for years I do worse after I have my coffee. He discovered that caffeine blocks the function of a key natural pain blocking chemical in the body. We both discussed it and realized that I was BY FAR the worst in my pain disease when I was drinking free coffee at work. The amplified bone crushing pain ended up costing me my job -- and career. Based on what he and I have learned about caffeine and pain, I would recommend that anyone struggling with chronic pain stop drinking coffee (and sadly even decaf... long story). Go for a month without it to see how you do. Then you can consider starting again.

Reading the comments, it's pretty clear that regular consumption of coffee doesn't suit everyone. It's a powerful and addictive stimulant and should be treated with respect. Decent coffee is also expensive !
I went through the same thing as you but I only found out I was actually deficient in other minerals and vitamins. I began consuming Zinc and vitamin c in the morning and I no longer have headaches! You should give it a go if your migraine persist.
The migraine is likely due to coffee addiction and its withdrawal effects. It is very common to experience a headache when you start to withdraw from coffee, even after just a few hours without it. Drinking coffee again can relieve the headache. This occurs because caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, and during withdrawal, the accumulated adenosine exerts its effects more strongly.
@@gazzyb85 I didn’t think that I had a coffee addiction as I only drink 1 mug (2 cups) a day after breakfast. If my migraine is full swing, coffee doesn’t have any taste and i don’t want to drink it.

I've never had coffee until a few years ago, when I started testing it. My overall takeaway is that it leaves me with less energy, and makes me more tired and less energetic about life and all the things I'm focusing on. I recommend you try cutting out this dangerous drug - try going a week without it. Being addicted to or reliant on any drug is terrible. You don't have to cut it out completely, but just try and see for yourself how you feel.
Now imagine someone saying that they simply can't live without cigarettes, alcohol or meth. Addicts say that. And yet somehow when it's applied to coffee, it's okay.

one big reason is caffeine withdrawal (which you experience each day unless you have caffeine or quit). That causes ADHD type symptoms. You think you're getting relief from ADHD, but you're in fact just alleviating the withdrawal process. ADHD is an issue with the dopaminergic system and caffeine messes with that. The fix is actually no drugs whatsoever (including caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, weed) and a ketogenic/carnivore diet. It regulates brain function. Sugar and ultra-processed foods can also cause over-excitation triggering ADHD, just like drugs can.

As a caffeine person this was so cool to know
Quitting coffee improved the way I feel greatly.
I really enjoy my cup of coffee - actually at least 10 cups a day and at 55 years old I am very pleased to carry on and have no regret over supporting the industry.
Hell yeah brother that’s a lot! Sometimes i mostly have 3 or 2 lol 10 might be overkill for me though
Everyone is different. 10 cups of coffee would kill my stomach. I drink about 3 or 4 cups a day. If I drink more, my body gets used to it, and I don't have the stimulating effect. But if it works for you, go for it!
With sugar or no sugar? Con azucar o sin azucar?
Your stupid.
Coffee is a very addictive and damaging drugs. Please stop drinking it!

After Parents, Siblings and God...Coffee is the most valuable subject in my life.
And only three of those things are real.
Great point.
Not money which can buy you coffee for yourself and your parents and your siblings and make you thankful to God for the gift of the coffee bean to humanity?

In my case coffee comes before god.
I gave up drinking any caffeinated drinks a few weeks ago, to see if it changes my energy levels and anxiety. I did not expect much of a change as I drank low to moderate amounts of tea and occasionally coffee (most often only one cup but never exceeding 2 cups) for more than 30 years. I couldn’t have been more wrong. My digestion has never been better, I have more energy and sleep better and less anxiety. Of course I miss my morning cup, but the way I feel now outweighs the small pleasure. I only drink water and herbal tea now.
One of the most important aspects about coffee that should’ve been mentioned in the video is the fact that coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops by insecticides, so it is highly recommended that you seek out organic coffee.
Can you recommend any retailers of organic coffee?, I don't buy from the internet. I've looked this year for organic in the town I live but nowhere stocks any. Some advice would be good please.
@@NATASHAHENDERSON-e7k I’m in Canada and I buy a local organic coffee brand readily available at the supermarkets here called Kicking Horse. It’s also available on Amazon and in some parts of the US.
Maybe this is the wrong place to ask if you don’t buy from the internet. 🤔
When I was studying in India, I consumed a lot of coffee. The effects this had on me were a nightmare! I had very little sleep, developed migraines, had rapid heartbeats and was very irritable and always on some kind of an impulse. I discovered coffee might have been the cause when, on one particular week I did not take coffee and I felt different. Since then, I stopped taking coffee completely!
Early when you stopped, did you feel exhausted?
Well done!

I never drank coffee until I was 70 and from then I enjoy my vegan, homemade version of an icecap once a day before noon. One of the pleasures I find in life that I thoroughly enjoy and at my age I am looking for ways to enjoy life any way I can.
0:50 Fun to think how persistent ancient people might’ve been in experimenting with different ways to somehow consume this hard bean until they discovered the best way was to roast them and then powder and run scalding hot water through them to extract their nutrients.
Those Sufis in Yemen needed something to feel all that night time worshiping so they were hard at work lol
What nutrients?
@@gerryhouska2859 Antioxidants and minerals are contained in coffee. Depending upon the brewing method…magnesium, manganese, chromium, cobalt, potassium, B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin) are valuable sources contained in coffee.
There are also benefits to the body, along with preventing serious illnesses…Alzeihmer’s disease and Colon Cancer to name just two.
Cheers!🇨🇦
Just one cup daily is enough for me; ground coffee in a cafetière with a splash of single cream👌🏽
No mention that its highly addictive and its effects diminish over time requiring higher doses
Yes, I have around 5 mugs of coffee aday and don't have any coffee or tea after 4 pm as I have a better sleep pattern. When I go to bed around 10, I just drink water from 4 pm to 9 pm..

So lovely. Since I'm a coffee addict, at least I can tell others how good this habit is. Although being an addict doesn't mean a great thing at all. However, I love your videos.

Ethiopia and Africa as a whole should be rich with all the natural resources, so it speaks volumes of how the western world have EXPLOITED us.
😂😂😂who has exploited who!
Exploitation is the cost of ignorance. instead we should do something to reform.
Africans are not motivated people, stop blaming others. It’s not a fluke that African countries that have more immigrants are the ones doing better such as Kenya, Uganda, South Africa
originated in Ethiopia, coffee is considered an ancient drink. luv it.
I drink half a cup a day in the morning especially after a full restful sleep, three or four days a week.
Reading the comments, it's pretty clear that regular consumption of coffee doesn't suit everyone. It's a powerful and addictive stimulant and should be treated with respect.
Decent coffee is also expensive !
My rule is just 1 cup of coffee a day around 10am or half an hour after I wake up if I have the gym.

It often works for me to stop a migraine which is a disease that affects the nervous system so now i’m understanding why drinking coffee helps
Migraine is symptom, not a disease.
I only drink 1 cup a coffee only once or twice a week. Sometimes it’s a mocha. I drink as it has helped me stay awake. Is that really bad?
What is a better alternative to coffee if you want to stay alert and awake?
I simply can’t live without drinking coffee! ☕️
I had low BP and coffee helps
@@JaydenLawsonSome people (like me) need coffee. I have a very bad case of insomnia so I 100% need it or my eyes burn. I’d have no power otherwise
That's not a good thing, you should get help for that.
Now imagine someone saying that they simply can't live without cigarettes, alcohol or meth. Addicts say that. And yet somehow when it's applied to coffee, it's okay.
I’m somewhat surprised this video does not mention how blood flow to the brain is reduced by 50% after consuming coffee. I believe there is an excellent book entitled ‘Caffeine Blues’ that is an excellent source of caffeine’s effects on the mind and body.

As an active gym goer. I had no clue that my lack of recovery was due to my intense coffee intake. The level of insomnia that I had to deal with over the years were absolutely unbearable.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed some of the benefits of coffee as mentioned in this video. Mainly, "The suppression of appetite and massive increase in strength /energy levels.
However I would never prioritize a coffee over my sleep, as it could have been very detrimental to my overall health. So I had to quit!! Nonetheless, I still miss that massive aroma!
My boost first thing in my day is one teaspoon of cinnamon (don’t take more than 1 tsp) and I take one teaspoon of tumeric. Then I eat my breakfast with two cups coffee this has no affect on me. So if u don’t drink coffee try my cinnamon/tumeric mixed with water or yoghurt don’t take dry as u may choke. Enjoy it starts my day perfectly.

Coffee by itself is okay. Coffee with creamer just makes it so much better.
Yes it may taste better with sugar and creamer but then you lose all the coffee benefits once you add that poison.
Creamers are basically a poison, try not to get accustomed to it.
If the coffee is of good quality and brewed well you should not need that, especially those artificial flavoured ones.
Milk will give that hint of sweetness and balance.
@@Boston82blhow? No real negatives with cream or milk
Yuck, black coffee is better. If your coffee is of good quality it will taste nice without creamer, sugar and all that unhealthy crap you put in it.
Starbucks ruins coffee with all the junk it adds into it, people are drinking sugar, not coffee
Yeah I learned that coffee/café/кава originated by farmers in Ethiopia I learned so a few years ago, and from that I assumed it spread throughout the entire world. the beverage Americano originated in world war 2 latte is the Italian word for milk.
Coffee also stimulates the production of the hormone gastrin, which helps push food through the gut. So if you find drinking coffee helps you to do a poo, then you are correct, it does!
Watching this video while having my morning coffee! Great video, BBC! Wish you all a good day!
I am surprised this video only listed positive effects and ignored all the negative aspects including addiction, increased anxiety, headaches and increased irritability and withdrawals. Addiction to anything can be dangerous and should be treated cautiously
I am surprised you say this, because they do actually mention some negative aspects. Did you watch the whole video?
Erm, no it didn't. It actually mentioned all of those effects before then going on to describe the positive effects.
Coffee is not for everyone, I am drinking black coffee from I was 17 years old, I can skip days without coffee, somedays I concentrate working and I do not drink my coffee, but most of the days I drink, no bad effects on me. However I know people who cannot drink they feel horrible so listen to your body, it is the most important.
I have known that coffee has some effect to our body, but I understood the mechanism in detail. It looks a bit stimulating, but I will keep drinking coffee for my health.

Thankyou😊
I quit coffee for 3 months this year. I definitely would feel some of the same annoyances as I normally do, but my impulsivity to act on those annoyances went WAY down.
Please explain why coffee has the opposite effect for some people with ADHD
Paradoxical reactions are common with coffee, medications and herbs for some neurodiverse people.
Caffeine increases dopamine levels, which may help with ADHD.
one big reason is caffeine withdrawal (which you experience each day unless you have caffeine or quit).
@@deem7718 yes but unfortunately it puts you on a rollercoaster, and the lows become even lower. Its not a fix, its a bandaid . You really have to fix the root of the problem to get anywhere.
@@KK-lg8uz Agreed!
Between my ADHD and chronic pain due to my nervous system.... caffeine helps a lot. Specially coffee in the morning. Or afternoon if, for what ever reason, i didn't have my morning coffee. Will admit its not best for my IBS but also why i drink a lot of water as well. But i will happily take that issue with the benefits i get, which outweigh any negative.
