  • A description of a basic wet layering system for paddlers new to the sport of kayaking. Whether fishing from a kayak, river paddling or developing hard core sea kayaking skills, we cover the simple basics of what to wear and how to wear it whilst maintaining a tight budget until you are ready to take the plunge and commit.
    The video covers just the basics needed to get started with the emphasis on;
    1) Layering your clothing
    2) Avoiding cotton and denim
    3) Using good quality wool as much as possible and
    4) Dressing for submersion
    There is a little bad language in the 'Blooper' at the end of the video so be aware. Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions at all or just need some free advice; we love our work and are happy to help.

    Thank you. This video may be 4 years old but it gives the most practical advice I've yet seen to get me on the water safely - and not breaking the bank. The rest can come as my experience and needs grows.

      Thank you! Stay safe on the water, make sure that you get some sensible instruction from a BCU/ISKGA qualified Coach and a kayaking or sea kayaking school.
      Make sure that you are safe on the water, that you know what to do if you capsize and that you have the right safety equipment with you. Get this information FROM A COACH.
      Unfortunately there are a some shops who will tell you what they want you to buy (and what they want to sell!) and not necessarily what is right for you. Enjoy our sport, it really is one of the best in the world! ( We may be biased :) )

    100% accurate on all levels.. when it comes to that changing poncho thingy , a person could just take a blanket or sheet sow the sides down and punch a hole for the head in the folded end and presto a changing thingy. That's a brilliant piece of gear. Or just use your wife's Moo Moo.

    Loved this! Thank you for excellent, practical tips. I am new to cold water kayaking and I have only ever kayaked in a shortie in warm weather/water. Now I am wondering how to walk into the cold sea with my kayak when I am wearing wool socks, water shoes and my base layer? Do I just go for it and stay wet?

    • @nomadseakayaking6655
      @nomadseakayaking6655  3 роки тому

      Yes is the easiest answer! A good pair of wool socks, while they will be wet, will warm and stay warm in your wet boots. You can always look at some water proof socks to wear under your boots as an alternative. They come in short and longer lengths and are another way to keep your feet dr/ dryer if this is your preference! Check out ‘sealskins’ as a brand, they work really well and we all have them in our kit at NOMAD Sea Kayaking to use when we choose to! Paddle suits we’d recommend looking at Reed Chillcheater. Another U.K. based company we use and highly recommend! Stay safe on the water! Becky NSK

      Neoprene socks or booties will keep your feet warm even when they're wet. They don't cost all that much.

    • @nomadseakayaking6655
      @nomadseakayaking6655  Рік тому

      Hi Derek, we don’t recommend wet suits as we try to stay dry, and wetsuits aren’t designed for that. Wetsuits will also chafe if dry or just a little damp & people tend to swell when they are warm. The wetsuit will then become restrictive and chafe in places you do not want chafing!
      We suggest synthetic layers, as they dry quickly, you can layer to your own specific body (everyone feels the cold differently) and when they get wet they stay relatively warm as well as drying quickly when given the opportunity. NO COTTON OR DENIM ; these get wet, become heavy and stay cold. Alternatively we would recommend either a paddle suit or a semi-dry outfit (cag and salopette type pants) We would recommend you look at Reed Chillcheater, they have a great range, good prices & fantastic service. I hope that helps! Happy paddling, stay safe & remember to always dress for the water temp not the air temp and wear a buoyancy aid every time you get into your kayak.
