Always Always dress for water temp. Look up near cold water drowning. The water will rob you of body temp faster than the air.
As a Dive Rescue Specialist I had to go over this information every year.
Wear insulation layers then by a good drysuit.
Invaluable knowledge from my favourite kayak guru. Gonna get me a pair of pogies.

Hi Dan! Great info! We are already into cold weather paddling up here, as well. Luckily for me LOTS of the gear I wear as a year-round runner is readily usable paddling gear. Breathable, waterproof, wind proof, and usually very reflective. So, check out the sales at your running stores as well.

Great video. I live on Honeoye Lake in upstate NY. We have needed this clothing for this whole month. Soon if you want to kayak you'll need your ice fishing suit. Then the lake will freeze and no paddling.
I've seen lots of kayaker's that put the life vest to the side for in case they need it but with so many layers of clothing on it will be very difficult to swim if you tip over specially in cold water so LIFE VEST ALWAYS ON specially in cold weather.

Nice video, I did something similar two years ago. I totally agree with the Snap Dragon poogies, very warm. For me I only use them when it's freezing temps out, otherwise I use fishing gloves. They are rather cheap does the job and I buy a new pair every season. You may add a neoprene hood for really cold days and when practicing rolling.
Btw, off seasons is December 25!
Wool is amazing even when it’s wet ! My opinion the 2 most important spots for keeping you warm are your head and something around your neck. Try to keep the heat down around your core ! Great vid !!

NRShas .5mm socks and a .5mm shirt to keep you warm. I used an NRS exploration drysuit for my solo kayak trip from Maine to Virginia. I hit warm water so I didn't need a drysuit anymore
Thank u Dan i needed this video! Can u do a video of that technique but with a sit on top? All the video Ive ever came a cross r with sit insides . The only way i can get into my sit on top is if i wet my feet =[
I use compression pants from Target. Over that are quick dry pants. It'll definitely keep you warm

Yall need to open a shop in northern idaho we have growing kayak fishing community. And really don't have a specialized kayak shop
We are fortunate to have all year paddling weather with right gear. What do you recommend for people who have latex allergies? Due to the latex gasket on the drysuit and paddling suit, I cannot wear them. What I wear in cold month is farmer john wetsuit, layers of synthetic fabric on top, neoprene boots and splash pants and splash jacket without latex on top. Do I have a better option? 60 degrees(16 degrees c)?That's a balmy summer's day most summers in The UK.(apart from when we have blip at 30 degrees for 3 or 4 days every 3 or so years!)Great videos advice-just wish that we had the range availability of the cheap end kayaks that you review.
This is great information thanks! Because our your videos I am getting myself a feel free aventura 140. Can’t wait till it comes in. I will have to look into some of the gear you mentioned. I got some dry pants but they don’t have the booties.
What do you use the knife on your life jacket for?
Spreading peanut butter, and cutting fishing line mostly. However it’s a emergency rescue knife to cut lines in a river situation. I use it for a million things now that I have it though.
So wearing my steelhead fishing gear is good enough. Just about the same as what you have there.
What gloves do you reccomend for cold weather kayak fishing with a baitcaster?

Great video. I wanted to ask about the bib boot. I’ve been told not to wear bib style waders because they can fill with water and sink you if you go overboard. The wader you’re wearing looks tight enough not to take on water. What are your thoughts?
South Florida Archery Guy yea these mate with a top so they seal and don’t allow water in. If I didn’t have the top I could get water in them for sure, but if I’m not wearing a top I’m usually in flat water where I’m confident I’ll be out of the water.
Very informative video! I was looking for this kind of information a year ago when I wanted to go winter kayaking, now I'm fully equipped :) One question though, regarding neoprene sprayskirts... How do you stretch them when they are brand new..? I'm asking cause I bought a Palm Roanoke recently, size R5 (89-98cm cockpit length, 48-58cm cockpit width) and my kayak was cockpit outer dimensions of 82x44cm (Aquarius Sea Ghost), and I am not even close to putting it on... I've read online that these skirts need an initial "pre-stretch", but not really sure how to go about doing it. Any help is greatly appreciated :) Cheers!
I'm sure you figured this out by now, but for others reading - just get the neoprene wet, and it will stretch much easier.

This is much more dangerous than I thought because I am poor. I will make my own waterproof suit, thank you.
Not a bad idea to jump in a pool and swim with your gear before you go out. . .
Just for the record, the cranial heat loss myth has been debunked. The only time "you lose most of your heat through your head" is when your head is the only part of your body not insulated. If you are otherwise dressed for cool/cold weather, any part of your body not insulated as well as the rest is going to lose the most heat. If you wear a hat and no gloves, most of your heat is lost through your hands. So yes, wear a hat, and gloves, and all the rest of it, to minimize exposed skin, because any exposed skin is where you lose the most heat.
