      It's not practical. You're heating water, that takes a ton of energy. You're getting very little back. That tiny flame would not be enough to heat the approx. 20 gallons of water in the bottom of that barrel. If you instead used a wood fire or coal, etc. it would just make more sense to use that heat energy rather than from the methane produced. If this were large scale like a brewery vat with a wood fire underneath I could see it being viable.

    Cody, this methane generator is absolutely genious. I love that you're doing it in your home, it makes it seem like such a viable project for myself too.
    I love the efficiency of it all, the waste products going to your garden to help create crops which you will eat, and the scraps will once again eventually return to the digestor.
    All the while you're producing enough gas that a constant flame can be run. It would be interesting to see how much energy and useful fertilizing material could be produced on a much larger scale.

    Add some anti foaming agent (even the kind used in spas will work). That will give you some use out of the foam. It will re suspend and get further broken down. Add another tank for stage two. it will give you more gas and separate your outputs, distill them if you will, into the separate tanks. Then you can collect methane, phosphates, and alcohols from one tank while getting ammonia gas, acetone, and nitrogen from the other.

    Hello Cody,
    I know it has been a while since you made this video and I do not know if you will be looking at comments from older videos, but I thought I would give it a chance regardless. Over the past few months I have been thinking about how it would be possible to make liquid hydrocarbons (diesel, for example, especially given prices currently) using the Fischer-Tropsch process. My full idea is to use a methane generator like this or woodgas from charcoal production to produce the raw feedstock. This would then be cleaned and then broken down into hydrogen and carbon monoxide to feed into the Fischer-Tropsch process. Obviously the system would not be very fast, even though parts of the process are used industrially, and likely not economically viable, but I thought the idea might be interesting to test or at least think about. I don't expect a video on this or anything, I just remembered this video and thought the idea fit.

    If you have one or can make one easily, why not make a bunsen burner sort of thing? The lantern mantle is wasting energy in what is almost pure conversion of gas to heat AFAIK by instead converting heat to light. Additionally, you could make it failsafe by putting a bit of platinum wire in the gas stream. If the flame ever went out, the gas would be catalyzed by the platinum wire, and would reignite.

    G'day,
    Yay Team !
    23 years ago I bought a Toyota Stout with a 6 Cyl 142 Cu. In. Holden "Red" Motor, running on LPG (search my "Mad Scientist" Playlist, for "The Rolls-Royce-Holden-Toyota Helicopter Stout !", to see it...!) ; and because it ran on Gas, & because I live 10 miles from the biggest Concentration-Camp for Cattle in Oz (Ranger's Valley "Feed Lot"), I did once crunch the Numbers on running "a 6-Cylinder Family Car" on Methane.
    It was an old Book I read, predating the Continuous-Flow system you're using ; but what I discovered taught me much about the nature of "Methane-Power", as seen in the 2nd & 3rd Mad Max videos.
    It seems that using "Batch Digestion" to run such a Vehicle 100 Km (60 miles) per week, one needed to build a 4-Chamber Digester, with each Chamber comprising a 1,000 (US) Gallon Tank, buried in a Hole lined with Insulation, and 2 Ft of Insulation overtopping it, equipped with a Mechanical Agitator & Heating Tubes... ; 3 Chambers were to be Brewing at any one time, with the other one being emptied of Sludge & recharged with 1 Ton of Fresh Moist Cowpoop.
    So, it only takes playing with 1 Ton of Cowturds going in, plus 750 Litres of Sludge being removed from the system, weekly ; to generate enough Bio-Gas to be able to scrub it of C.O.-2, and run it in a Water-Cooled Spark-Ignition Engine from a Gasometer, to turn a Water-Cooled 3-Stage Compressor to squeeze the Methane to 2,000 PSI to go in long narrow Steel Cylinders, with which to feed the Engine of the Fire Chariot...., and, all the Hot Water carrying the "Waste-Heat" from the Methane-Engine/Compressor combination has to be pumped through the Chambers of the 3 "working" Chambers...
    Your Continuous-Flow Design means that if you postulate a single suitably-plumbed 5,000 Gallon buried & insulated Poly-Tank, with two adjoining Gasometers for the Biogas & Scrubbed Methane, & the Engine/Compressor...; then to drive your classic "Normal Car" 60 miles per Week will *"only"* require you to shovel 320 Pounds of Cowshit per day into the Tank, while adding 50 Gallons of fresh Water & removing 60 Gallons of Sludge...
    I'm sorry, I'm a lazy Hypocrite & I run my Fire-Chariot on 22 Litres of Fossil-sourced Petroleum per week, to drive 250 Km (156 Miles) or so...; but I do have a 30 Watt "Mk-8 SunFoil" on the Roof, which may be saving me between 1 & 3 Litres per week...
    I don't get to say that I'm "driving Fossil-Free" on Carbon-Neutral Methane, but I don't spend my life shovelling Cowshit, either..; and I'm covering the same Road, with the same Load, at the same Speed, on less Motion-Lotion.
    And all it takes is adding a Streamlined Solar Array & Battery Charge-Controller to the Automobile Battery, in parallel to the Engine-Driven Alternator's Regulator.
    Every time the Alternator's Regulator "sees" Solar Current at the (Fully Charged - while sitting in the Parking-Lot...) Battery-Terminals, the Alt's Reg. decides the Battery is already full, and reduces it's Output....
    And, every Vehicle burns a lot less Fuel, when the Alternator is not loading-up it's Driven-Pulley with Electromagnetic Drag, trying to quickly finish recharging the Battery (which had been sulphating while part-flat, since the last time the Engine was shut-down before the Battery had finished being Recharged....).
    So, um, I love your Concept & Design for a Continuous-Flow Methane Producer...; but I don't want to spend my life collecting & shovelling & disposing of Shit, just(ifiably ?) to get around...
    I suspect a Tricycle Land-Yacht, and waiting till the Wind is "Fair" for the Journey, until the Road Network collapses (soon).
    Such is Life,
    Have a good one....
    ;-p
    Ciao !

    Can you bubble the methane into a large dewar of liquid nitrogen to store it as a solid? Also, is methane soluble in liquid nitrogen or oxygen? If so, will a mixture of methane and liquid oxygen explode on ignition?

    • @jaredlancaster4137

    • @CSX4772
      @CSX4772 6 років тому

      Liquid oxygen and liquid methane might produce a hyperbolic reaction. Where as just as soon as the 2 mix you get a reaction. An example would be the rocket engine used in the Saturn V rocket. It used liquid kerosene and liquid oxygen. Just as soon as they mixed, it produced a severe hypergolic reaction. That created a lot of force.

    • @knicknacks
      @knicknacks 6 років тому

      @@CSX4772 The Saturn v engines were not hypergolic. AFAIK liquid oxygen is not hypergolic with any fuel.
      A good example of a hypergolic engine would be the ones on the Russian proton rocket. It uses dinitrogen tetroxide and unsymmetric monomethyl hydazine.

      He said in the video that the methane was getting stinky, so why I'm asking for clarification; Was it just that it was concentrated enough that it began to have a smell? Were there contaminants in it? Did he just misspeak, meaning the methane generator was smelling up the place? Etc.
