That's a major factor in growing jades. The root system is so small, and the leaves are so heavy with all the water they store that balancing pot and plant can be a big problem. The plants are so easy to grow in other respects, and when they bloom, they are so beautiful that they are worth the trouble.
My jades do the same. I discovered that they are more stable and grow roots better if the soil is finer, for example with some addition of sand. But anyway, I don’t cut rootbase on them, hardly ever.
What a lovely combo of plant and pot, they really compliment eachother. I didn't even realize jades could flower like that! I have a little grewia that I have to plant in my cream coloured Ray pot in the spring! I'm not brave or experienced enough to try repotting at this time of the year! lol
I enjoyed this. Perfect timing. I recently repotted a very large jade gifted to me. In order to fit it in the pot I selected, I needed to achieve shallow roots. It was necessary for me to cut a very long thick tap root, and cut away hard roots as you have done here. Thanks for sharing, yours looks great in its new pot!
I can only watch in amazement at your wonderful plant room - I find it incredible to see tropical trees together with a coating of the white snow through the window. It works though and thoroughly enyoyable as usual !

Great looking jade Nigel, and I absolutely adore that pot. My jade that given to me as farwell gift from my wife's friend that had to move far away is about four or five years old with a bit of silver sorta has flaky bark and barley has any leaves, it never produced any flowers and grown only a few inches since I've acquired it.
Wow i cant believe that your jade has flowered 2 years in a row and its 15 years old I know someone who has a 50 year old jade which is massive (not a bonsai) and hasnt flowered or flowered in years
I have two thanksgiving cacti. One was a red and white plant from Walmart, and the other is a Samba Brazil I got online. Samba Brazil has bright yellow and scarlet flowers. When it blooms it reminds me of Mardi Gras in Rio. When you mentioned the spines on your Christmas cactus, I went and checked mine. There they were. The spines are so tiny and soft, I had never noticed them.
You do this I could never image Nigel....I'm afraid to lose a root - you're cutting into them!!! Next is to prune you're hair....baobab style I think....😍
hi nigel .. if you put your thick fat adenium in this warm room .. it is going to leaf out and flowering too ... my suggestion is do it and see the amazing result
Beautiful! Do you have any advice on rock planting and how large a pot may need to be for the initial growing period? I want to try my hand at it with one of my hardier species.
Need advice got a ficus regeliosa the truck is thin should I leave it in the pot with the original soil till it thickens, then put it in bonsai soil ? This will be my first bonsai iam new at this I watch many of your video and copy your soil mix thank for sharing how to mix the soil.
wow, such a large amount of foliage on the Ficus cutting, I have had some success with soft wood cuttings from my large ficus which has since had two new trees develop from it but never a cutting that size. Are they really that easy? For somebody without a greenhouse when should I attempt that?
Yes I do, if they are healthy and getting bushy. Indoor growth is usually courser and with larger leaves, so much of it gets reduced once summer comes again!
I don’t know how I missed the jade flowering! How’d you manage to get it to flower? I’ve had a mighty old one for over a decade that I started from one leaf and I never can get it to flower.
Hi. I have a jade plant that looks very similar. It’s still in the original pot I first put it in around 15 years ago. It was hidden outside in the garden & I have only just found it again after moving house. It’s not a bonsai, but I would like to try & convert it to a large bonsai style. It’s trunk is at least 10cm across , and is very top heavy. I’m thinking a boab style like your other video I just watched, but not so small. My question is, should I leave it in the pot that it is currently growing happily in (30cm ) or should I repot it? I don’t want to kill it and I have zero bonsai experience. Do you have any advice? I’m in Australia 🇦🇺❤️
I’m at a point of needing to decide what to do with my jades. The canopies are starting to look too big for the thickness of the trunk. But I can’t bring myself to do a hard chop on them. Any advice? I’ve never made a drastic cut like that and I’m concerned.
I've chopped mine a few times, I'd recommend doing it in springtime to be safe, and for the cuttings to take well. That said, I've never had huge problems with mine, even if I live very North and don't use much growlights. I just water extremely little in the winter.
@@OliverJazzz thanks. I have plenty of cuttings, you know how it is haha. But I’ll give ‘em a way. If I really chop it back, they’ll be little bonsai trees in their own right haha.
@@OliverJazzz sorry, I missed your response some how. Thank you. I’ll hold off until spring, though I keep them indoors under lights anyway. I have been working on the ramification of branches for a while, it seems like such a shame and backwards decision to chop the branches off. 😩
This pot was perfect for the jade.
Just beautiful.
I think jades look awesome in darker green or reddish brown pots. ❤❤
"they're not diyng or growing just existing" same bro.. same
Funny, some days we all feel that way!!
The combination of Ray’s pot and the flowering Jade is STUNNING! 😍 I have the pot.. now to find the Jade..
I have the Jade, I need the pot. 😅
It’s amazing how small the root system is for a jade that big. What interesting plants

Fantastic Christmas Cactus!!! Great updates on the trees in the plant room.
Jade and pot compliment each other. Excellent!
That pot really makes it look bright and sunny, I can't believe the difference!
The new pot suits the Jade perfectly! Pretty ❤️

Great winter solstice update on the plant room, good sir. It’s much nicer having your workstation in the green house now, so much more light.
It's incredible jade specimens in nature, that have a large canopy, manage to stay upwright with such a small root systen.

Jade in new pot looks 10/10
Nice! as you say it's the perfect pot.
I really enjoyed this video. Very relaxing watching you work. I've learned so much from watching you and now I want a Christmas cactus bonsai.
The Jade looks fantastic in that pot!

Wonderful choice for pot.
That jade looks awesome in the pot from Ray! Great choice Nigel! Love looking around the plant room . Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Beautiful tree.
I really wonder how the ficus will do! Keep us informed, Nigel.
My rain trees always seem to go a little dormant and lose their leaves around december and then bounce back january/february
hi nigel .. if you put your thick fat adenium in this warm room .. it is going to leaf out and flowering too ... my suggestion is do it and see the amazing result
Thought. What about a nice Serissa cutting in that small rectangular pot? I bet it would be nice in it as a Mame bonsai.
Nice jade. I've been think that I might put my single portulacaria afra in pot something like that
Nice
Beautiful!
Do you have any advice on rock planting and how large a pot may need to be for the initial growing period? I want to try my hand at it with one of my hardier species.

Yes I do, if they are healthy and getting bushy. Indoor growth is usually courser and with larger leaves, so much of it gets reduced once summer comes again!
Hi nigel, How's the temperature and humidity did you keep your plant room during winter?
Do these Jade flowers have fragrance? If yes then how does it smell like?
I don’t know how I missed the jade flowering! How’d you manage to get it to flower? I’ve had a mighty old one for over a decade that I started from one leaf and I never can get it to flower.
Wonder if Nigel has ever done a soursop tree
The plant room is a jungle! Do you rotate your trees in there to get even growth on all sides?
From where can i get bonsai seeds ?.......please help

If it's happy in the current pot, I would just work on the pruning. Repotting can always come later after the tree is recovered and growing well!
Thank you so much 🇦🇺❤️
looks like the roots have rotted away, they should had filled that small pot if healthy
