  • After a cold day in the orchard, I'm repotting my new "arm size" Jade, getting it underway as a bonsai!
The tree is a Crassula ovata and is native to South Africa.

Thanks for all the inspiration, Nigel! I found your channel ages ago when looking on YT for “jade pruning” and absolutely love everything about your channel - from the plants to the biking to the truck!
I was able to save my grandmother’s rotting jade because of your videos. Thanks for sharing your journey with us all!

It's interesting how jades can survive and grow with just a small ammount of roots like your has. Quite a resilient plant!

You should style your jade to look like one of those African baobab trees, also it has a similar bark texture as a baobab would in the wild

Nigel you should keep a bucket of ice water in your truck to warm your hands! On another note, I absolutely love your cinematography, the forethought of placing the camera in the truck so we can see you getting in and starting it up is a real nice touch!

I just got one for my wife in a 4 inch pot. It shows great promise; 6 inch high main trunk, 2 nice low branches and lots of clusters up the trunk. I repotted it last night cuz it was growing crooked. So much root! I dont know if I will be allowed to style it, but I will get plenty of cuttings over the next few years.

Hi Nigel!! 👋👩‍🦳️👋 Very cool arm sized Jade, with nice planting; the reddish rocks and decorative soil covering.
Did you think of trying to find an old looking wooden dollhouse sized chair to lean back up against the trunk? I know, I know, it's kind of cliche', then you would have an "Armchair Jade". 😉😄😂
I continue to love your work Nigel and how much you share. With your viewers and your community!

I have the same kind of jade never did I thought they get that big or bigger of trunk. So my two year old tree is just a baby.
If you like desert style bonsai, maybe some day I see you growing Artemisia tridentata, commonly called Great Basin sagebrush. I have a yamadori I field collected on my tribal land over a year ago, and it just explodes with new growth in the spring. Will flower In the fall, and stay green in the winter. Very aromatic when pruning. If you ever get a chance to work with them I think you as well will fall in love with them.

Watching you take the time to sift the soil reminds me not only of how greedy I am when it comes to these things, but also how much haste I put into my every day actions. Perhaps from time to time, you need to slow down and enjoy the good things.
Edit: Its amazing that the top shoot landed in the middle of the top scar, it will be able to create perfect taper!
You really need a nice stiff nylon brush with a fine handle for scooping away dirt, your art is very much like uncovering the bones of dinosaurs.

Long time viewer, first time commenter. I absolutely adore the videos you put out, it is very inspiring.
I was watching your older video on making bonsai soil, and I have been shopping for the ingredients this week. However in today's soil you didn't use organic components, as you did in the other video. I was wondering if that is because you were preparing it for Jade, and aiming for very low water retention.
Again, love your channel; great videos, warm and educational. Thanks!

It's got wrinkles because the roots are new and not supporting the plant with enough water, this happens to large cuttings like this. When the plant becomes more established those wrinkles will smooth out and become solid again.

  • @monkeygraborange
    @monkeygraborange 3 роки тому

That pot will be perfect for the next couple or three years, if not longer. I can see this becoming a truly majestic jade tree.
That having been said, you should perhaps shift your focus from that community garden to getting the dang greenhouse built. Maybe ask those that you help to help you?
You don't need the stress of another winter like the one we just had, and the plant room is woefully inadequate.
    Lecture over.

I haven't seen any "hydraulic" problems with shallow pots. I use only shallow pots for every of my bonsai. Actually water from shallow pots run away much faster than higher pots. Shallow pots are wider and usually have more holes on the bottom, so water runs away instantly. Especially with light, bonsai soil which is water-permeable.

Nigel I am curious. You mentioned at 25:30 that you can let the jade trunk grow if you don't prune it (good summer also).
Is this a better way to get a thicker trunk than heavy pruning the top branches and side branches?

I asked a chat bot (PI AI) what dormant oil was, and he asked if I was having an issue with pests. I said no, I just heard Nigel mention it on UA-cam. The AI was like, “Ah! Nigel Saunders! He is a bonsai expert with a lot of tips and tricks.” 😂 - AI is getting crazy 😅
