  • Inspired by John Koenig’s The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, this experimental short film narrates a life passively stuck in a depressive loop, trying to stay afloat. Being part of a bigger puzzle, with no matching pieces around, and every day feels like yesterday, again and again. Through mood, space and sound, we follow this life’s path to break from the hopeless pattern.

Monachopsis means “the subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place, as maladapted to your surroundings as a seal on a beach-lumbering, clumsy, easily distracted, huddled in the company of other misfits, unable to recognize the ambient roar of your intended habitat, in which you’d be fluidly, brilliantly, effortlessly at home.”
If you have it, this is how life feels.

For those who need an explanation on what's happening...
*Monachopsis (noun): The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place, as maladapted to your surroundings as a seal on a beach-lumbering, clumsy, easily distracted, huddled in the company of other misfits, unable to recognize the ambient roar of your intended habitat, in which you’d be fluidly, brilliantly, effortlessly at home.*
The first thing to notice is the title, defined above as "Monachopsis". This animation is designed to show the story of someone feeling out of place and frustrated with life. The story follows a high school student dealing with the persistent feeling of monachopsis. If you know this feeling, you'll understand the story better.
The description of this video is:
*Inspired by John Koenig’s The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, this experimental short film narrates a life passively stuck in a depressive loop, trying to stay afloat. Being part of a bigger puzzle, with no matching pieces around, and every day feels like yesterday, again and again. Through mood, space and sound, we follow this life’s path to break from the hopeless pattern.*
We don't see the person the story is following, but we can tell that they are there through the use of diegetic (in-story) sound and object movement. The person in question is a high school student, as shown by the lockers and school they are in.
Now onto the video itself. The rock pillars are symbolism, these are actually used in Buddhism to represent balance in a practice known as rock stacking. If you have inner balance and inner concentration, it will be shown through outer balance in how many rocks you can stack. We see one such rock pillar in the first scene, showing that the student in question has some inner balance. We hear an alarm clock go off in the second scene and hear it get turned off, meaning the student wakes up to go to school. Note the unmade bed, showing the student is already not on top of things and is feeling tired. The clock keeps ticking to give the viewer a sense of endlessness. We see another rock pillar at the bus stop, where the bus stops for the student. While alone on the bus, the student designs an intricate pattern on the frost on the window of the bus, showing off their creativity.
We then see the student's school. They sit in the seat second from the window/wall. The repetitive locker door slam is used four times to indicate the repetition of the same daily routine. Each slam gets louder to indicate the student's frustration with their repetitive life and the depressive atmosphere of the school. We see them leave school and go home late at night on an empty bus.
Time passes. It's now winter, shown by the snow falling and collecting on the ground. The student continues to follow the same routine, waiting at the bus stop to head to school. The bus is still empty. The messy drawing on the window indicates the character's chaotic inner feelings. It's no longer an intricate design, it looks half-smudged, as if the student got tired and gave up mid-design. The movement of the school supplies on the desk can show how the student was fidgeting with them out of boredom. It could also show how the student seems to be overwhelmed and clearly frustrated with their life.
The student finally hits a breaking point. The rock pillars collapse, showing that the student has upset their daily life and their balance. The atmosphere is dark and foreboding.
More time passes and there is a time skip. The clock ticks, but our character's alarm does not go off. Shown through sound, the bus does not stop, as there is no one there to pick up. The character's desk is left completely empty. The character has left school to pursue their own path.
Finally, we see how the student has successfully created a unique life for themselves, shown with the newly assembled pillars. Both the water and music are calm. The old rock pillars on the pier are still collapsed, but we see new stacks built in a creative pattern in the water nearby. The student, having broken the repetitive cycle of their old life, builds a new life for themselves.

I really love this short film...the sound design and animation are beautiful, every shot carries meaning and the film follows a subtle but touching narrative that a lot of people can probably relate to. I also like that the movie ended on a positive note rather than a hopeless/depressing one. Good job!!!!

All of the people are invisible because the person himself/herself feels like their invisible to others. It feels like your not really there with them... your just kind of at the distance watching

What I got from the video was that it was a school aged individual stuck in a routine.
I then read the description box which actually details the inspiration of the project.

I think the rocks represent life and that it may be good and something happens that may make it bad, but once it settles there’s something great awaiting

If you read the description, it explains somewhat. There are also some lovely little hints at what is happening in each scene. For example, the use of surrounding sound and object movement to indicate the presence of a person and other people. The rock pillars to represent balance. The repetitive locker door slam to indicate the repetition of the same daily routine over, and over, and over. Each slam getting louder to possibly indicate frustration. The dreary and depressive atmosphere. The chaotic drawing on the window indicates the characters feelings. The movement of the school supplies on the desk as if our character were fidgeting with them out of boredom. Suddenly, the balance and daily routine of their life are upset. The rock pillars collapse. The atmosphere is still dark and nerve-racking. We are taken back to a serene day. Our character's alarm does not go off. The bus does not stop as there is no one there to pick up. (indicated through sound) The character's desk is left vacant. Finally, we see the upset balance, but everything is calm. Settled. The person's troubles are over and having broken the repetitive cycle, they build anew a unique life, seen in the newly assembled pillars.
