You are absolutely correct about placing terraced walls too close together with no geogrid. It imparts a surcharge load on the lower wall, which can cause the lower wall to tip over or kick out at the bottom.

I'm always very thankful for contractors who work hard to do things right in Mpls. I know the inspectors are kinda hard on projects. Dealing with my own issues right now trying to build a new staircase in my own home to replace one that's a death trap, and they decided we need to build a whole new supporting wall (with it's own footing) for that entire side of the house for both floors just for that staircase (we just had new support posts put in too where they determined what we had was sufficient and a nice beautiful new floor poured, lol). Just trying to take some deep breaths and take it a step at a time.

One word: STYROFOAM.....a foot of dirt is R4....an inch (or is it two?) of styro is R4. It's been a while!
You could have used styro to increase your sideways frost protection and still built the one single wall.
I've used styro to increase frost protection over water lines, large and small, with great success when going deeper was either impossible too complicated (other utilities) or inconvenient. Distance is the key, vertical and horizontal.....the ground is around 50 degrees year round 6-8 feet down (depending on latitude)....when you insulate you allow that warmth to move higher compared to adjacent/uninsulated ground.

I love watching machine operators. My father started with a backhoe in the late 60s, then moved up to tracked digger. He claim to have never damaged a single cable, even when coming across unmarked military comms cabling. I never really got to see him work the machines back when he was still working.
(We're restoring an old backhoe similar to the one he started with, so I hope to get to see him perform, and also learn to handle it)
Walls being pushed out. I've seen that happen even with the concrete blocks that have a tab at the back to lock it in place above the row underneath.

If you had a spade truck you mite of been able to save the trees but they were planted to close to the house in the first place trees like that need space. Cute when small but a pain when they grow. I use to do land scaping back in the day we never had equipment like you the machines that you have now. Plus the attachments you can get for your excavator now mind blowing.

Stan, I’ve been dedicating time to watch your videos as a way to further “educate” myself when it comes to retaining walls and pavers. Specifically on the retaining walls, the 4” sleeved drain pipe.. does it require an exit point on the front on the wall or on the side. I’ve been waiting for that to be covered, but havent heard it yet. I’m expanding my company to now include walls and pavers and being in Idaho, I believe that’s an intricate part.
Thanks! Really appreciate you taking time to educate us contractors.

I just discovered your channel today. I’m a 27 year veteran contractor in the San Diego area and started as an apprentice in in Chicago in ‘73. I see you retaining walls and rock bed compacted and something new to me the wire retainer. The compacted rock acts as your foundation along with a course or two of block. This project has a significant surcharge. My question why not use a footer with rebar horizontal and vertical? The chosen stone doesn’t show cores for rebar. I’m curious why Minnesota doesn’t use the footers? Your state process so dramatically different than I’ve seen

Also i as helping. New student find her way around the school, she was glad i helped, i gave here the VIP tour of the school lol, and gave her some pointers. Always good to help those who are new find their way around the school and give some tips on high school like. Then i had art class and then came home. It sure was a exciting Monday, but i am so grateful tomorrow is Tuesday, its one day farther than Monday and one day closer to Friday haha. Hope your week goes swell Stan, god Bless and go get em, your pal and friend Alexander costa

Not sure why people want the walls, and not the flat land. Good job though, great videos.

That was a genius use of the skid steer bucket. I had never seen that before.

Wouldn't you want a tarp or something under all the rocks or is that not realistic? Just seems like a nightmare to mow afterwards :D
Thanks for all the great videos!

Plastic wouldnt do anything, but 10 or so sheets of 1/2 osb would have. Kinda low effort on his part.

Yeah if you put some fabric or a tarp down it makes final cleanup way easier.

@@christopherbeddoe406 blue tarps work just fine. Cheap money for a quick and thorough site clean when complete. One missed stone from 3/4 crushed can become a lawnmower driven projectile later.

I won't let anyone drop stone or even mulch or black dirt in the yard without a tarp underlayment. Not only does it make cleanup better, especially for stone and rock, but it looks more professional and shows you are conscientious.
I wonder why you didn't back the truck up into the back yard to reduce the relocate effort on the stone. You already drove at least two other heavy vehicles so the ground is already affected and there are minor ruts that need to be repaired.

nah in this case id do the same, its easier to patch some old dead grass with a couple handfuls of seed then too buy a new tarp everytime and try not to destroy it with the machines. that was 1 of many loads for sure

Dude, you look just like James Hetfield. Now all we need is a few shots of you shredding on your guitar from atop a giant claw digger!!!
