Too many young people reviewing cars have a thing about whats under the bonnet and 0 to 60 and horse power. I couldn't give a continental about that. I want comfort and reliability.
Even funnier is how those reviewers talk about carving mountain road corners in a family hatchback. With my kids screaming in the back all I want is a comfortable reliable and safe car that's fast enough to cruise at the speed limit without strain.
At 54 years old I guess I'm one of those young people you're referring to 🤔... But now in Joe Biden's America I put fuel economy at the top of the list!!

It’s E-CVT not CVT. It’s a simulated gearbox so no friction so obviously no wearing parts,it’s a genius piece of kit, the only people who hate it is people who don’t understand it and is scared of it, a typical human trait. I know it’s different to drive than a DSG or a conventional auto gearbox, but once you can used to it you’ll love it’s.
@@eddy45686The difference is the eCVT is one of the most reliable transmissions ever made, if not the most. Traditional belt CVTs are very unreliable and have a terrible reputation.
I own this model and I love it! The fact that Carwow recently crowned it as the most reliable car of the past 10 years is the icing on the cake! Don’t mind the CVT, because the V6 sounds nice and smooth.
Cheers for the review Matt. I sold my V10 Touareg last month, too expensive to run and maintain, and now have a Lexus 450h. It’s not as involved to drive and nowhere near as quick, but a lovely place to sit. Thanks for your video, it helped make my mind up what to buy. Keep up the good work. Regards, peter, Manchester.
Excellent review! I got this over a range rover and I have never looked back! Everything in this car is perfect, from the engine to refinement, also the aftersales in the Lexus dealership!
This rx450h is the most reliable car ever made it's like a Tank bullet proof ,after factory guarantee this model don't have a single claim for brake down
I much prefer the older rx300 to drive, the interior was brighter, the ride was more relaxing. I have an f-sport 450h as well and 2 x MR2’s - the MR2’s are fun but for mile munching the RX’s are amazing, very relaxing to drive and the minute the door closes they become an escape from the world’s insanity. You often arrive more relaxed than before you started your journey, what’s not to like?
Great video. My dad bought a RX300 from new on a 54 plate still got it now never skipped a beat been the best car ever. Would love to see a video on a new shape RX450 and ISF
Uh Matt, you said to service the transmission. Uuuhh These don't have a transmission. What you're calling a CVT isn't actually a CVT. The power transmission is done by 2 planetary gear-sets based around the electric drive motor and the generator/alternator/starter. There are ZERO friction surfaces (apart from bearings) in the drive-unit so they are essentially non-wearing and have nothing to service. They are absolutely genius bits of kit.
Spot on review, thanks. I used to have a black one, and loved it. It was so quiet and reliable. One small potential issue I personally had was that a couple of times when I was at a red traffic light I inadvertently pushed the Engine Off button instead of the Stereo Off button - because they’re placed right next to each other.
We bought a used RX330 a few months ago and absolutely love it! I have been thinking about buying a RX450h because the 330 gets about 21-23mpg with 70%highway and 30%city. The RX450h would give us that comfort, safety, and style we like while getting better mpg.
My mums 2nd favourite car. We used it as a family car for 4 years 2014-2018 and took it all over Australia. Over 72000km without an issue. Never needed any warranty work. So many good memories with that car. My mum still misses it to this day. Only issue was that because of all those years of carrying heavy suitcases around Australia the suspension started to squeak and there were rattles in the interior. Also the electric motor was failing and fuel economy worsened. What a good car though. But we recently got a 2013 Mercedes Benz ML350 BlueTEC and it’s a lot better
High Peak Autos seats were really soft in the front and back. It was a basic spec so no heated seats but thankfully our ML350 W166 has that. The W166 is similar in terms of comfort. I recommend you buy a nice ML350 and see what you think. Personally I think it’s great

Actually it is great in the snow, if you drive to the strengths of the Electric drivetrain. Electric motors make maximum torque as soon as they start turning, so with gentle application of the throttle you will stay moving long after the comparable X5/Q5s have spun their wheels to a halt. Also, i had to do some serious off-roading to get a casualty a mile across fields to a waiting Ambulance in our RX400h, which it coped with reasonably well, only the ground clearance underneath the exhaust. We have now done 200k in the RX400h with very little cost and great reliability so will replace it with a 450, it is great to have a big, quiet, smooth do everything wagon, if I want fun and frolics I take my Porsche!

Good review. My mate from aus bought an RX450h to do a 6 month european road trip in. Didn't miss a beat & on his return I was so impressed I bought it from him. Lovely wafety family car. You can put it into sport mode which lets you shift yourself which removes a lot of the CVT annoyance. The engine is a peach & lovely growl when hooning. Stealth, wealth and Alan Partridge 😂 good honest review Matt, think this era of Lexus treaded a fine line between decent looking and over styles compared to the latest line up...
High Peak Autos I sat in a Lexus UX a few months back when they put a little stand in Victoria Leeds and just found they are too over styled inside and out for my liking - I wonder what the typical Alan Partridge owner would feel like seeing what they look like now. Also they used to be the tech heads choice too but now they’ve all migrated to a certain other brand...
Me too. I actually looked up Muranos on autotrader after his review. Last thing I need. I think he’s sending out subliminal messages....like Hitler and the Third Reich.
We bought our Rx450 sl in 2018. Really I can't fault it. Had to have a front suspension airbag assembly replaced as it was squeaking , apparently a known fault, but apart from that, dealer serviced it is perfect. The Mark Levinson sounds are excellent. Tyres and brake pads last a looooong time if you look ahead and allow the regen braking to slow you down.
Great review. We looked at an RX450h. It ticked alot of boxes. Unfortunately having a very large dog. Boot space was at a premium. The ride was a surprise. Very stiff, which was a minus point for us. Reliability? We read it is very reliable...For an SUV. Of course, Lexus servicing is secod to none. Towing a caravan..Hybrids are not well suited to it by all accounts. It's not just a Lexus problem. So overall it was a close call. I think for just a couple who want a daily driver and travel around in a quiet SUV. It could be perfect.
Easier lifestyle if you dont own a dog. I dont understand the obsession with having one, I really dont. Feeding, cleaning up after it, walking it, vets bills. What a bloody nuisance.
The battery is beneath the rear seat and has no impact on the boot space, however, the spare wheel is the one that raised the boot flor. I have a 2012 RX450H and still running like a charm. Lexus quality
Bought one few months ago. Ride is a bit firm at lower speeds but works pretty well at higher speeds. It is really very, very quiet, you feel like you drive on a bubble. It was my only choice, since I needed a large family car, that would make frequent short distances in the city (so no diesel) and could be roomy and quite frugal on fuel (which it is). Where I live we use winter tyres during the cold season, so snowy roads have never been a problem.
Was waiting for this review as I am thinking to buy ...I have 2nd Gen RX 400H with some options missing so wanted to change ,,,your review helped me make that decision
The "bad back" happened to me when I had a Vauxhall Crossland for a week . My back was killing me by day two and I struggled for the rest of the week . As soon as I gave it back , my back returned to normal . Really strange
Had the use of a Crossland for a day on a long journey. Not a bad car but I dont think many people buy Vauxhalls these days. Cant see them surviving much longer in the UK.
Had one for 5 years now the same year as the video one but in FSport guise. Average mpg is closer to 28mpg but reliability and running costs are minimal. No need for separate warranty now as it comes free with each service. I like the looks. Weaknesses include susoension bushes wear prematurely and sub frame arms are a bit lightweight. Bad backs and CT models are not a surprise as they are so hard sprung…awful things. The RX is sublimely comfortable. Fit decent tyres and buy the firmer f sport and they do handle surprisingly well. The one thing to note is they may not have timing belts but do have high voltage drive belts which you need to replace every 5 years or so. Great cars….very little comes close in quality, comfort or dependability. One of the best all rounders ever made. Oh, one correction if I may. 0-60 isn’t 7.8 it’s 6.8s as independently verified. That’s seriously good for a car weighing 2.2 tonnes! Overtakes are a breeze thanks to high torque. Once driven few owners want any other car.
If you’re looking for a car that’s reliable and not too fussed with extras Lexus won’t let you down plus customer service is the best I’ve experienced. Would dispute tyre issue , my RX is 3 year old , only outlay I’ve had is servicing costs .
Would u kindly make a video comparing this with new one leaning 2016 to 2022 model ? No one so far has done it and many ppl expressed different opinions. New one has same engine tweaked differently a little and new body and interior. But very keen to see u doing a review on new one and comparing with this. Your reviews are one of the best and very underrated. I got many to subscribe to your channel
You can access Sport mode through the gauge cluster menus for that extra oomph - not that you'd need it but its hilarious when the local youths Fiesta tries to have a traffic light grand prix, and it does make make the steering a bit heavier too
I am in love with this car. In Germany almost all Lexuses are hybrids, I'm very concerned about the batteries in those 10y old cars, how hard are the replacements of the batteries? How expensive are the parts? How likely are they to break? What about the generator? Almost no info on this ANYWHERE :(
I would like to know the same. I’m thinking of buying a 2012 450H but research shows me that the batteries cost between $7,000 and $9,000 and $600 and $900 labor. Last between 6 and 10 years. I’m in the US. Does anyone know about this. Has me giving it second thoughts. Please help.
Not sure about Germany but in the UK Lexus give 15 year warranty, up from 10 years as they were so reliable. The car and battery is essentially bomb proof
I did have a lexus is200, back in the day, the original. Those seats were the best I have ever had in any car, drove for 100’s of miles and never had a back issue. Cannot day that for all the other cars I have owned and they bmw and Porsche
I’m on my 2nd Lexus GS430 which I love , I just wish Lexus would put a little more work into the handling department, I’ve driven old Mondeos that were way more fun when it gets twisty 😁👍
I switched from a MK3 Mondeo to a 2010 RX450h. Mondeo was way more fun on twisty roads. But in all other aspects the Lexus is a far more superior car. Anyway you don't normally get a big, heavy, hybrid SUV for twisty roads. Now I don't know about your GS model, i have driven a GS450h of a friend and was pretty nice, but didn't have this connection with the road that my Mondeo had. Old Mondeos had brilliant handling and feeling, the new one has become somewhat lifeless.
Im looking to get an SUV. have been looking at all of them. Ideally want one with rear reclining seats. Hyundai Santa Fe and RAV4 have reclining seats but too slow unless you get the brand new hybrid. Also need something reasonably quick 0-60 in 8seconds ish. Seat Ateca 2.0 diesel is quick enough but no reclining rear seats. NIssan X trail is a possible contender but a little slow at 9ish seconds. So this Lexus is looking favourite. Its not a looker but you cant have everything. Good review - liked his succinct, no bullshit straight to the point style.
I love the panoramic sunroof, every car should have one. I had one for a day from the garage but found it to big. I've a IS 220d Sport and it eats tyres too, well I suppose it is a heavy car. The new model RX is a lovely machine, although very big.
I cant stand panoramic sunroofs. Hot in summer even with the blind pulled across and if anything falls on it they are expensive to replace. I know, I worked in the service department for a dealer. Why the obsession with them ? I don’t get it.
I love Lexus. Have one now. ES330 love it. Thinking of buying SUV 450 H but after researching and found out the batteries for them are between 7,000 and $9,000 without installation, between $600 and $900 I have second thoughts.
Great video, nice RX. With regards to seats you could maybe adjust the lumbar to help your back? (I used to change my lumbar loads in my Golf GTD on longer trips to prevent me getting stiff) :)

Looking at one of these at £7.5-10k as as my next family car. Need space comfort safety and reliability. I cant seem to find a better proposition especially as i want to avoid diesel (lots of short school runs)
one of the best car i owned so many complains to cvt gearbox u cant complaint u bought lexus because u not a bmw driver u want posh comfortable suv . theres no car wich does ewerything u want at a push of a button.
I agree that it does change your style of driving for the better in the never ending quest for better fuel economy. My 2012 RX costs less to run than our 21 year old Mercedes A160 it replaced.
‘Peace comfort luxury?’ Best I cud come up with after testing one today, honestly I thought it was slow, very heavy feeling (coz it is) but comfortable One security flaw, dealer started the car remotely and I did the whole test drive with no key on board me assuming he left it next to me, so a thief can steal the remote signal and drive off VAG cars cut out if the key is 1-2m away
Hello, can someone explain to me why this model has a larger than normal sunroof? I'm looking at this second-hand model and it has the smallest sunroof. Can you tell me why? and what version is it and year?
I used to hate CVT . After drove this on autobahn i really love this transmission . If you try to drive this like conventional automatic gear box it doesn’t work and fuel consumption goes high . When you get the point you will start loving this transmission. But it doesn’t perform well on up hills .
Funnily, I'm with you on the seats. Now I'm considerably older than you (at 51), but I have a RX450h of this same generation (a 2010), and while the seats feel really comfy at first, on a longer run my back aches after a couple of hours. I also have a BMW E93 which I use quite a lot, it has more harsh feeling seats but they never ever give me a backache. Just never. And I've spent just as many long distance miles in the BMW as I have in the Lexus. So for me BMW seats win. Still very much in love with my RX though. It's a very easy car to live with. Edit in 2021: The BMW, charismatic and beautiful as it is (being a convertible also), it tends to break down to the tune of three grand every other year or so. So there's that. The Lexus just keeps on going, despite twice the mileage...
This is very odd to me. How seat design can make or break ones experience with a car. I’ve now owned a 2006 E320 CDI for 4 years and easily drive it for 14 hours from Cape Town to Johannesburg with no trouble at all. Then we bought a 2006 VW Touareg (not to replace the Merc, thank God) and after 15 minutes, I want to drive it off the road!
I love mine, had the rx300 for many years. Now this 450h. Great cars, I think you're on to something with the back issue.😥 and no not that old🤣🤣, just know quality.
Hi Matt. How is your back pain? Increasingly I bought a Lexus is350 and I have dropped lower back pain. I get it every time I drive it. I wonder if anyone else have had the same problem? Great car otherwise so I don't want to sell it.
Really enjoy your reviews completely down to earth and great sense of humour! Love all the different cars you showcase, question do you prefer manual or automatic cars? 👍
These and the 400h model are fairly rare in the UK, i cant understand why more people dont have them, they are THAT good. Even if you bought a good example now with 100-150k miles on for between 5-10 grand it will drive you around forever. Way beyond anything else in it class for the price in my opinion.
Weird you found the seats uncomfortable. Lexus make some of the most comfortable seats in any production car. I have a GS 450h and it's a 12 year old car. More comfortable seats than any Audi or BMW. These cars overall are amazing
Hi Matt another brilliant video very informative and funny and I have learnt not to drink anything while I’m watching your videos, your L405 has double glazing and is much much nicer to look at and to drive then the Lexus hope you’re well best wishes ian

How much does a new battery cost for that one?
Lovely Jubbly, a car review with humour, can't fault that.
2009 or 2010 and how much
@@tunedime 2010. 13.5K Euro.
@@stamy74 im torn on 2008 vs 2010
@@tunedime 2008 would be RX400h. 450h started in 2009.
@@stamy74 im thinking of getting the 400h.
Was waiting for this review as I am thinking to buy ...I have 2nd Gen RX 400H with some options missing so wanted to change ,,,your review helped me make that decision
Thanks for watching
The "bad back" happened to me when I had a Vauxhall Crossland for a week .
My back was killing me by day two and I struggled for the rest of the week .
As soon as I gave it back , my back returned to normal . Really strange
Had the use of a Crossland for a day on a long journey. Not a bad car but I dont think many people buy Vauxhalls these days. Cant see them surviving much longer in the UK.
I think this is a beautiful car.
There’s the review !!!! Perfect.
Cheers
We are on our third car with a CVT tranmission, and haven't had any problems with them at all.
I think most hybrids have CVT now.
CVT is awful
If you’re looking for a car that’s reliable and not too fussed with extras Lexus won’t let you down plus customer service is the best I’ve experienced. Would dispute tyre issue , my RX is 3 year old , only outlay I’ve had is servicing costs .
Have this car for over 4 years now. Love it. Zero problems. Lots of cargo space. Safety etc.
You can access Sport mode through the gauge cluster menus for that extra oomph - not that you'd need it but its hilarious when the local youths Fiesta tries to have a traffic light grand prix, and it does make make the steering a bit heavier too
„Local youths Fiesta“ haha this one is gold. Nevertheless it is accurate...
Owned mk1, mk3, mk4 LS 400. All gave me back trouble.
Now drive Saab 9/5.
No back problems.
You can get a aftermarket battery for cheaper
Thanks man been watching all that I missed, thanks again
I did have a lexus is200, back in the day, the original. Those seats were the best I have ever had in any car, drove for 100’s of miles and never had a back issue. Cannot day that for all the other cars I have owned and they bmw and Porsche
I really love the variety of cars in your videos
Thanks!
Great reveiws
I'm watching laeding up to my next purchase
I’m on my 2nd Lexus GS430 which I love , I just wish Lexus would put a little more work into the handling department, I’ve driven old Mondeos that were way more fun when it gets twisty 😁👍
I love the refinement with them. I love the luxury and reliability but youre right about the handling
As always a great video spiced with subtle humour and so nice to see the Peak District in all its splendour.
The pursuit of perfection was Lexus original moto
I love the panoramic sunroof, every car should have one. I had one for a day from the garage but found it to big. I've a IS 220d Sport and it eats tyres too, well I suppose it is a heavy car. The new model RX is a lovely machine, although very big.
I cant stand panoramic sunroofs. Hot in summer even with the blind pulled across and if anything falls on it they are expensive to replace. I know, I worked in the service department for a dealer. Why the obsession with them ? I don’t get it.
Great channel this, always watching it. If you get the oportunity, would you do a review of the Hyundai Santa Fe please.
Great video as always. Would be great to have a review on a model from Infinite when you get your hands on one. They are so rare!
Don't forget the satnav ,that seems to have a pixal count in single figures.
XD
Great video again, never really took to the big Lexus grille, looks to me like its been designed in isolation by more than one person.
Perfect honest review.
I love Lexus ❤️🌹🔥
I love Lexus. Have one now. ES330 love it. Thinking of buying SUV 450 H but after researching and found out the batteries for them are between 7,000 and $9,000 without installation, between $600 and $900 I have second thoughts.
I know a good slogan for Lexus reliability dependability and luxury
Great video, nice RX. With regards to seats you could maybe adjust the lumbar to help your back? (I used to change my lumbar loads in my Golf GTD on longer trips to prevent me getting stiff) :)
Hello anyone can tell if its worth to buy rx450h 2010 model it come with all services made from dealership of lexus very well maintained 3 owners
Price £5.500
I need to give the answer by tomorrow
The reason i want its quite large for a family
Please let me know guys thank you in advance
Here in Serbia, 2010 RX450h is priced at around 12.000 eur. So it was a great offer you had there!
What used year should I consider buying for the 450h? What years should I avoid?
Looking at one of these at £7.5-10k as as my next family car. Need space comfort safety and reliability. I cant seem to find a better proposition especially as i want to avoid diesel (lots of short school runs)
one of the best car i owned so many complains to cvt gearbox u cant complaint u bought lexus because u not a bmw driver u want posh comfortable suv . theres no car wich does ewerything u want at a push of a button.
I love these video’s !
Thanks!
I agree that it does change your style of driving for the better in the never ending quest for better fuel economy. My 2012 RX costs less to run than our 21 year old Mercedes A160 it replaced.
I am looking at a 2010 with 107K tonight. Thanks for the information.
I’ve bought my one and I can’t get more than 30mpg. I don’t know if something is wrong with the battery.
‘Peace comfort luxury?’ Best I cud come up with after testing one today, honestly I thought it was slow, very heavy feeling (coz it is) but comfortable
One security flaw, dealer started the car remotely and I did the whole test drive with no key on board me assuming he left it next to me, so a thief can steal the remote signal and drive off
VAG cars cut out if the key is 1-2m away
Hello, can someone explain to me why this model has a larger than normal sunroof? I'm looking at this second-hand model and it has the smallest sunroof. Can you tell me why? and what version is it and year?
Self, wealth and stealth (in electric mode).
I used to hate CVT . After drove this on autobahn i really love this transmission . If you try to drive this like conventional automatic gear box it doesn’t work and fuel consumption goes high . When you get the point you will start loving this transmission. But it doesn’t perform well on up hills .
Thought u just leave it in drive or u talking about putting into sport?
Excellent review Matt! Thanks :)
Glad you liked it!
my 2010 does have HUD and cooled seats and front radar
I have the same with some Toyota‘s regarding the seats ..
This car is about 10 years old but the price is very high for a used one in Malaysia.
Enjoyed it as usual, although the styling of the lexus is not to my liking, but that said very informative and keep up the great videos.
Lexus yes, CVT not so much, but it's part of the hybrid package. Sadly not aware of a torque converter one.
These cars overall are amazing
no accent this time! Keep it up your videos are good
5:24 my grandads ix35 has the same gear lever design with the j pattern if you can call it that
Lexus is the best car in the world period!!
Hi Matt another brilliant video very informative and funny and I have learnt not to drink anything while I’m watching your videos, your L405 has double glazing and is much much nicer to look at and to drive then the Lexus hope you’re well best wishes ian
Glad you enjoyed it! I agree with you about the Range Rover - no contest
High Peak Autos I hope one day in the future to come and have a look at your 405 if that’s ok with you matt take care, ian
The boer war! LOL blimey, I must be older than I think. I remember the Argies :) Nice car and great review
Thank for the review Matt, why do you say you prefer this one over XC90?
