I plugged in my 4 TB USB hard drive from my PS4 into my PS5 before I booted it up the first time. The PS5 immediately recognized it, installed it, and all my PS4 games were there. Super easy.

This is just for file transfer, which is fine. If you play PS4 games straight from the extended storage, you do want it hooked up to the back ports. If you use an adapter, it defeats the benefits of usb type C.
I have the Samsung T7. Very impressed how fast & small the hard drive is. I plugged it into the USB-C when I downloaded games & plugged it into the rear USB once they were done.

Don’t mean to be argumentative or anything, but; You can play a game straight from an extended hard drive/SSD. You don’t have to move it back to the Console atorage.
I have to correct you on one thing.. Saying that using the USB-C port alone will transfer games twice as fast is kind of a misnomer. USB-C is just a different type of port than USB-A and doesn’t necessarily mean it’s “faster”. It all depends on the USB standard the external drive is using. If a USB external drive is USB 3.0 and uses a type A or C USB connector, the transfer speeds will be the same no matter which one it is. If an external drive is say a USB-C and USB 3.1 than you’ll get slightly faster transfer speeds but again it doesn’t matter. What matters is the standard the USB drive is using, not the port type.
"in the distant future" M.2 drives won't cost more the the console for a TB of space and it'll make much less sense to transfer ps5 games back and forth on externals.

It was faster because it was an SSD, both the USB-C at the front and the two USB-A at the back have the same speed. Just the USB-A at the front is slow because it was meant to charge the DualSense.
You have two ports on the back side of your PlayStation that are 3.0 USB you can use them for external storage I don't know what Drive you're using that takes hours to transfer anything but I've transferred 500gb within 15 minutes. I personally don't want to use my USB c port because I only have one. But I have check the download speeds between the two and of course pending on your drive they're around the same speed. I personally use a Samsung T7 SSD and I feel like it's faster than the actual PS5 SSD. I would not recommend a hard drive unless you're using it strictly For storage. If you plan to play games off of it then I definitely recommend a SSD. Oh and the USB port in the front is not a high-speed port.

please be careful when connecting an external drive to your ps5 front USB-c port. When I connect my SSD drive, while playing, it causes latency like around .5 seconds and sometimes even stops working for a second while playing games. The cable is short so it is handing nearly in the air just in front of PS5, which could be the issue. Sony needs to let us play PS5 games with a external SSD It's fucking madness why Sony didn't make this feature mandatory or immediately available before they launched the PS5 🤦♂️ But I'm pretty sure their intention was to make a built-in expansion slot Which not everybody has the capability to simply flip the PS5 upside down then open up the panel then you will see the SSD expansion slot 🤦♂️ Which I never knew my PS5 has a built-in SSD expansion slot and they finally allowed everyone to upgrade the SSD storage capacity I did not hesitate to go on Amazon I bought a WD black M.2 4 TB SSD with the built in heat sink I found the cheapest model Which almost costed me $400 I finally got it a few weeks ago I was extra careful installing it I didn't tie the screw too hard After that I plugged the power cable back in turned on my PS5 It immediately recognized The SSD I clicked format And it successfully formatted The SSD I bought Now I have So much space to install 100 plus PS5 games 😍 I am happy for a long time 😍

It's not that being able to connect via USB-C is special. You need to make sure your USB-C connected drive is USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 compliant. Otherwise you just have a USB-C cable connected to an older, slower drive,

You can leave it plugged in as well because once all the games ar downloaded on the hard drive it works
I’ve always left mine plugged in and use rest mode every time.
I still wish that, for disk based games, it was possible to delete the disk's data while keeping the update data.

I think the only 2 Nvme Ssd‘s the that will work in the PS5 are the Samsung 980 PRO and WD_BLACK SN850. 7000mb/s. To my Knowledge, but we will see.

ONLY PS5/XBOX series games are required to be on the respective consoles SSD internal storage. PS4 and Xbox One games can be stored anywhere.
