@@OfficialSamuelC lmao, I fully understood what the guy was trying to say. I just completely disagree. (maybe you dont understand the word vacuum, and assumed im refering to a vacuum cleaner in regards to dust) Airflow works better if there is an inlet and an outlet. @@pennywisethedancingclown7139 I known they are screw holes. That is what I said. The guy in the video called them vents and he says it is neccessary to reinstall the cover for propper ventilation. Strangely enough there was a whole article about this comparing Temps. With ssd cover on with out heatsink, with heatsink, cover off, etc. The Temps were better with the cover off, with a heatsink. Look up Toms hardware.
Heck, if the cover wasn't required to be reinstalled, I doubt Sony would have included it in the first place. Companies don't just add parts to their designs for the fun of it. If they could save money by not including something and the product still would function properly, they would do it. I'm surprised anyone thought that Sony mustn't have known what they were doing from a temperature control perspective with regards to the cover, and that it should be removed and not reinstalled.
You always stick a thin piece of aluminum to the top of that cover or even use aluminum tape to help transfer heat to the larger metal cover. Anything helps. I used to work in electronic manufacturing...Sometimes i had to make mods such as getting people in house to cut aluminum bars becuase prefab heatsink didnt cool it enough or fit/size didnt fit and would simply cost lots of money to get special heatsink made..or have the PCB re design..Then that might not fit into the enclousre..ect I solved it without increase production cost .There's rev changes made during production for many reasons.
I’m biased on this whole argument! those aren’t air vents… those are screw holes lol. The PS5 air intake would pass over the entire M.2 heatsink with that silly cover off. I bet if someone did testing with a temperature probe, the SSD would run just as cool or cooler with that cover off! Just like they say to keep the side plates on the PS5. But the entire system runs cooler if you pull all the plates off. Sometimes it’s not best to always listen to the recommendation setups.
Ya. Been running it without with no temperature variance. Used temperature probs and laser Temps to verify stable play for nearly 70 plus hours without issue. Monitored every hour.
I made a custom m.2 cover to fit the huge heatsink on it. But if you have a huge heatsink this is not a issue as it passively cooling the m.2 anyway. the only thing is if you don't have a heatsink on the m.2 drive DO NOT LEAVE the cover off. ive done tests and ive found massive m.2 heatsink passively cools the m.2 better (by about 10-13deg cel) than with a tiny heat sink and the m.2 cover on. im gonna post the results soon. so in conclusion unless you got a large heatsink on the m.2 drive then replace the cover. but if you have a massive heat sink you don't need to worry as the passive cooling of the large heatsink is enough. wish I could post my pics

Hey, there! Watched a lot of other videos testing that feature and many discount the actual need to replace that cover. I installed the Sabrent Heat Sink, which is quite large, and due to it's technical features am comfortable not putting that plate on.
I'm not going to use only the PS5 cooling for the heatsink because they need direct cooling. You can 3D print a cover with holes and a filter so that you don't have to worry about the hole and dust. You can power fans externally or from the slot if they followed the standards.
I understand if you have a house that gets real dusty but the ssd slot has maybe 2 places in the ssd slot that could be considered to barely vent. So other than the dust( if you have a dusty house or office) theirs no real benefit to the cover in my opinion. I'll take my chances with the heatsink I installed. the heatsink I'm using is barely to big for my ssd door to go back on. I've been using it this way tho since the betas release with the 980pro. I've checked a couple times for ventilation and dust and it really doesn't seem like an issue so far. The only video I've found other than this one showed that the little bit bigger heatsink was about 2 to 5 degrees cooler than a ssd with the low profile ssd w/the door on. Idk....what do yall think🤔. Hope this helps others who ordered a bigger heatsink by accident! GREAT video tho bro!!!
@@PhoenixWebTV that was actually my first thought. The likelihood of not using the door messing with your airflow doesn't seem likely. It's a beta for a reason. We will see what they say when the official version comes out!
There should be some testing performed by preferably Gamers Nexus. My personal experience is that a beefier heatsink without the cover performs better than having the cover on. The tiny holes on the sides of the cover aren't optimal in cas your heatsink ribbons are oriented parallel with the M.2 SSD.
Someone needs to make a custom cover for bigger heatsinks... I got the Rocket NVME heatsink and that's huge but it does the Best job at keeping the NVME cool.
@@arifmunshi6833 Not really. If you look at the whole unit with the cover on, there are 2 tiny cut out channels in the plastic that allow air to be drawn out of the NVMe bay by the main console fan. By leaving the cover off, the air can be drawn without being confined to those small channels. The result will be far better heat dissipation.

Very good video and I have watched a number of your videos in the past. What you say is correct most of the time. I struggled knowing what heatsink to use with the NVME that would allow me to put the cover back on. After a bit of digging I found that if you buy the Sabrent M.2 NVMe PS5 heatsink (SB-PSHS) this replaces the cover you refer to. I purchased the heatsink with with the Sabrent 1TB NVME drive and it is an excellent kit. If you are interested you can see my video on it on my UA-cam channel. If you use a different heatsink then what you say is totally true and you need to use the PlayStation 5 original cover.
I've heard so many people say it doesn't matter whether you put the cover back on or not, or leaving the cover off actually improves cooling. Personally I think I'll listen to the people who actually designed and built the console. lol
This is what i learned from years of tinkering with pc and laptop cooling. Not every covers are bad and not every openings are good. The most important things are airflow and air pressure. With good airflow and air pressure, even the most compact form will perform better.
Dang I would totally put this advise to use but those SSD be running a real hot price, imma have to wait like three years later to cop the WD Black or something similar for good quality😐 😆
@@legendarykielbasapower525 is the one you got have all the requirements to use it in the PS5, I haven't done much research but I've only seen a few that seem trustworthy
I left the cover off with a low profile heatsink over my Crucial P5 Plus 2TB. Still working fine with high speeds and no throttling. If Sony's cooling engineers were so good the PS4 would not have cooked internals. I think the PS5 is a better design but for negative pressure to work effectively you need consistent higher RPMs with that single fan vacuuming the cool air through the system and exhausting it quickly. Air vents are right next to SSD expansion bay pulling air over the heatsink which will cool it. Putting the cover back on I would think would restrict the airflow even more. Those small holes in the expansion bay will not cut it. I call BS. I have used many NVME SSDs in my own PCs and building for others. A small low profile heatsink and fans pushing/pulling air over the heatsink is light years better. HWMonitor and HWiNFO64 verified.
Ya, I've been PC gaming and modding for 20 years. Everyone finds their niche when it comes to PC's and mine has always been cooling products and modifications. Negative pressure is fine as long as there is somewhere for the fresh air to be supplied from....which the cover restricts. He points out that there are holes for cooling the NVMe with this "negative pressure", but continues to say they are "inside the expansion bay" meaning it's under negative pressure, with no inlet for a fresh air supply with the cover installed. Cracks around the cover absolutely do not count as a fresh air inlet. Another thing, he's parroting what Sony engineers tried to come up with as dissuasion for people going out and buying Dbrand Darkplates with this "negative pressure" myth, and he's confusing this as a technique for cooling the NVMe. I've watched quite a few videos of testing the PS5 with different cooling methods. Without the NVMe cover, it can run up to 15°-18° cooler. There is still the issue of dust though. I cut out most of the center of my NVMe cover, and glued aluminum PC dust filter material to it. I did other modifications as well. I just created a slideshow on my channel of the mods.
hi there,i recently purchased a corsair mp600 pro 1tb and the huge heatsink won t allow the metal cover to fit, will there be a problem if i install it without the metal cover?
The best way to look at it is if you imagine your SSD inside a tube where the air is going from one end to another, cooling the SSD. But if you cut a large hole on the tube around the SSD location you end up having way less efficient cooling since the air won't contact the SSD all around. And as stated in the video, leaving the cover off will also accumulate even more dust inside your system.
1. Airflow isnt worse when not putitng the cover back on. 2. You can clean the Dust every now and then. Yall doing like there is 0 airflow when not applying the cover back on. Its like saying an open pc testbench is worse then one which is closed.

I'm thinking of upgrading the storage by firstly going down the external SSD road first and seeing how things go when the internal comes out of BETA
in the ps5 beta, i knew without being told i have to recover this bay, it makes sense. but sir you can use the m.2 without the bay cover, yes your exposing it to dust etc....but if your m.2 comes with a oversized heatsink it will not hamper your usage. in the instructions sony sends, there's nothing saying you must cover the bay back after install even in the faq section. i would say do it at your own risk.
I am gonna do this when Sony releases an official SSD. I don't really need more storage for now as all my games are PS4 and I have them on my 4TB External Harddrive. Only problem with that is that PS5 games can't be stored and played on there, only stored.
It's worth noting that Tom's Hardware did temperature tests with heatsink and cover off, heatsink and cover on, NO heatsink and cover off, and finally NO heatsink and cover ON. Performance was BEST with a heatsink installed and the cover OFF. The cover ON with a heatsink installed was 2nd, but in some cases it was almost the same as NO heatsink installed with the cover OFF. If you don't have a drive with a heatsink, putting the cover ON will actually result in a much higher temperature. The worst out of the 4. So while they may say it's cooled through negative pressure, the real world results don't seem to back this up.
I gotta WD Black SN850 1Tb w/ Heatsink. I installed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on it to test it out. I’ve never, ever had that game load almost instantaneously. I hated playing it on PS4 because it took over 2 minutes to load. The results speak for themselves. I am thoroughly impressed.

What small bits are you talking about.
Are you refering to the screw holes for diferent size drives?
And even if air was being sucked out, it would be more efficient if air could get in from the other side, otherwise it creates a vacuum.
The only reason I believe to put the cover on is for dust protection
Lol you clearly don’t understand the video or hardware. It is not for dust protection only. It’s mainly for cooling.
@@OfficialSamuelC lol you know nothing about PC hardware… if you had basic knowledge, you would know what the required operating temperature for NVMe drive is and why buying one with a heat sink is overkill.
Also you might want to look up EMI and RF Shielding, it’s been part of basic console/pc construction since the 80s…
@@OfficialSamuelC lmao, I fully understood what the guy was trying to say. I just completely disagree. (maybe you dont understand the word vacuum, and assumed im refering to a vacuum cleaner in regards to dust)
Airflow works better if there is an inlet and an outlet.
Firstly, those screw holes arent extraction vents, and if they were, they would work better with the lid off.
I only agree with his second point about dust and fluff build up. But its not hard to give a clean out every now and then.
@@SteveDavies80 Those are screw holes, not vents. If the M.2 was left without a cover, it would be sufficiently cooled and probably better off without being covered. He literally just explained in the video… the entire air intake would pass over the heat sink as it entered the PS5… I’m betting if someone did testing with temperature probes, the SSD would be much cooler with that silly cover off.
@@pennywisethedancingclown7139 I known they are screw holes. That is what I said. The guy in the video called them vents and he says it is neccessary to reinstall the cover for propper ventilation.
As far as Im concerned, leaving the cover off will be better for cooling, but putting the cover on protects from dust.
Keeping the cover off provides lower temperatures. If it gets dusty, just clean it.
I love your videos! They are short, very informative, precise, and to the point. Thank you!
I appreciate it 😊
Strangely enough there was a whole article about this comparing Temps. With ssd cover on with out heatsink, with heatsink, cover off, etc. The Temps were better with the cover off, with a heatsink. Look up Toms hardware.
If the cover wasn't required to be reinstalled then the maximum height of the heatsinks wouldn't be such a big issue.
You always stick a thin piece of aluminum to the top of that cover
or even use aluminum tape to help transfer heat to the larger metal cover.
Anything helps. I used to work in electronic manufacturing...Sometimes
i had to make mods such as getting people in house to cut aluminum
bars becuase prefab heatsink didnt cool it enough or fit/size didnt fit
and would simply cost lots of money to get special heatsink made..or
have the PCB re design..Then that might not fit into the enclousre..ect
I solved it without increase production cost
.There's rev changes made during production for many reasons.
You're a muppet. People like you make me physically ill.
The only thing I'm worried about with the SSD expansion is if the heatsink is too large to fit in the bay when it's closed.
Which is why they give you the dimensions needed. You need to get stuff that fits their specs.
First world problem
Yea I agree buddy. My Sabrent heat sink is HUGE.And it takes the entire space of the cover that comes with Ps5!Its so thick& I can tell its working well btw.Good comment @Mustached gamer🤜🤛✌Its a really tight fit too I see on PS5....
Always appreciate your videos man regardless if I know the information or not you make real simple and clear for all users 👍🏼
During the official tear down, the metal parts inside that housing is part of a giant metal piece which is cooled by the PS5 fan. So yeah, put the SSD cover ON to let the fan do its job.
I put a bigger heatsink that wont let me close the bay but the ssd is running cooler than with the smaller heatsink and the bay close so
@@yonkocommander5531 You'll probably be fine, the problem is we'll never really know long term unless someone does thermal tests now and long term.
I just know Sony designed it purposely that way for a reason, whether it's dust prevention or thermal reasons.
Good tip for when this update actually comes out proper.

Cheers for the info. Not gonna use the info though but good to know. I'm a bit old school so just gonna keep using my external SSD instead. I don't run that many games as daily drivers so I have enough internal space for those, then just use an external SSD to hold all my old PS4 titles and as a temp storage for PS5 games I play but not running as daily drivers.
Keep up the great coverage 👊🏿💯
No problem & thanks for sharing!
Right in the moment I decided to remove the plate tomorrow this video popped into my recommendations. You saved me.
Thanks for the informative tips!
I agree with you. It's a beta so, of course, they are going to say it's not supported to do otherwise. Everything in a PC is open - I see no concern.
@@PhoenixWebTV that was actually my first thought. The likelihood of not using the door messing with your airflow doesn't seem likely. It's a beta for a reason. We will see what they say when the official version comes out!
But until then I have no choice but to use it without the door.
@@Blakegrimis1990 yeah. I’m happy to give it a go. I’m not worried.
There should be some testing performed by preferably Gamers Nexus. My personal experience is that a beefier heatsink without the cover performs better than having the cover on. The tiny holes on the sides of the cover aren't optimal in cas your heatsink ribbons are oriented parallel with the M.2 SSD.
The size of the heatsink matters not if the airflow isn't directed over it!
Someone needs to make a custom cover for bigger heatsinks... I got the Rocket NVME heatsink and that's huge but it does the Best job at keeping the NVME cool.
Yes and in this case, the cover being left off will make no difference.
Is there a way of checking the nvme temps on a ps5?
@@arifmunshi6833 Not really. If you look at the whole unit with the cover on, there are 2 tiny cut out channels in the plastic that allow air to be drawn out of the NVMe bay by the main console fan. By leaving the cover off, the air can be drawn without being confined to those small channels. The result will be far better heat dissipation.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll put this to use when Sony open up the extended storage software update to Australia

This is what i learned from years of tinkering with pc and laptop cooling. Not every covers are bad and not every openings are good. The most important things are airflow and air pressure. With good airflow and air pressure, even the most compact form will perform better.

@patrikbun9514 As long as you have a heatsink on the mp600 and you can still put the side panel back on correctly you should not need the metal cover.

Could you share a link or two to what SSD you are using or recommend?

Been watching your videos since before having a PS5. I’ve been putting all these tips to good use since I finally got one.
in the ps5 beta, i knew without being told i have to recover this bay, it makes sense. but sir you can use the m.2 without the bay cover, yes your exposing it to dust etc....but if your m.2 comes with a oversized heatsink it will not hamper your usage. in the instructions sony sends, there's nothing saying you must cover the bay back after install even in the faq section. i would say do it at your own risk.

At the very least, the cover further helps mitigate heat affecting the ssd, so I don't know why anyone wouldn't keep it on.
Might explain why the oversized heat sinks that prevent the plate from being reinstalled seem to do little extra for cooling than a standard sized heat sink?
