@@bland9876 The original Sonic game uses a blue ball that turns red. Sonic 2 and 3 use a red ball with a black circle in the middle, and a white star in the middle of the black circle. Sonic CD used a blue ball that turns into a flashing red and yellow ball. I think 2 and 3 would be the most interesting of the checkpoints to use for the cabinet. 🙂
Wow so many hours spent playing Sonic 1, 2 & 3, how many memories with Sonic & Knuckles. I still have the original SEGA MegaDrive/Genesis and it still works great, BUT this mini cabinet would be handy for a quick game without having to take console, cartridges, and cables out of the closet.
Looks nice though I was hoping it would look like the old Sega Mega-Play System arcade and also include other games for that machine. Basically it was Nintendo's Playchoice-10 but for Sega Mega Drive games. NA never got it...
I really like the design My Arcade comes up with recently. Although I enjoy SONIC more in the cinema I am excited about the rest of the new Sega partnership lineup.
Bet it will include Sonic 1,2 Spinball and Dr. Robotniks mean bean machine quite fitting since do have a arcade feel to them, Sonic 1 and 2 did have actual versions one is included on the Sega Ages Switch Port of Sonic 1 on the MegaPlay board which changed the games to be even more arcade like *no 1up monitors,you need to add coins to start and continue, you got between 30 seconds and 2 minutes depending on the level to finish a act rather then 10 minutes before a time over death, slower levels like Marble, Labyrinth and special stages are gone lastly there's a actual high score screen so gives you a reason to rank up points* even tho they might not include the arcade versions do kinda want this, have fond memories playing Sonic 1 on a Mega Tech arcade machine *basically like Nintendo's play choice 10 machines*
Just with the 1 button, they can still put almost every Sonic game from the Genesis and Game Gear on there. The exception that comes to mind is Sonic Spinball. Pretty sure that one required all 3 buttons on the Genesis control pad to operate the individual flippers. Also not sure about Sonic 3D Blast, but I haven't played that one in a long time. I don't even remember its control scheme.
Looks great and glad they went with the single button on the lower RHS. I really hope they get the screen right because screen tearing would absolutely kill this thing dead. Keep up the awesome work Jon!
I would love for it to include the Arcade versions of Sonic 1 & 2, Sonic has a lot of Arcade games but I doubt they would ever get re-released because they are not as well known.

I misread the title on my phone and thought it said SEGASonic, I got extremely excited thinking we were getting the rad arcade game in mini form w a lil trackball haha. Would've been a must buy for me. Oh well, hey put Sonic the Fighters in there and I'll still bite! But, probably going to be the Genesis games, which I'm a huge fan of but honestly if that's all it is I'll probably skip. Put some master system or game gear ones in there as well and that *MIGHT* sweeten the deal for me a little..

The Genesis, SMS and GG games have been re-released sooo many times though that I don't think it would be worth it for me to purchase a Micro Player just for those unfortunately. I get the novelty, but considering how many ports these games have gotten, eh... I will say that if they added the Mega Play versions of Sonic 1 & 2 that would sweeten the deal for me. Even if these Mini Arcades had just the Mega Play versions of those games, I would already find it more interesting than the same old Genesis versions which have as many no bells or whistles ports as there are houses on the streets!
Probably the first three sonic games. I have alwayswanted the sega Arcade Power Stick, still will like to get it. Sonic is the reason why am a video game enthusiast.
I'm inclined to think it might only be the first Sonic game just because there's the one button and from Sonic 2 onward you had both Jump and Spin buttons.

Honestly, it would be kinda be neat if they gave us the Mega Tech version as that was an arcade release of Sonic The Hegdehog Edit: I found out that there's two different arcade releases of the same game I'm not sure which version I'm talking about.
Mega Play would be time based, so you would pay $0.50 for two minutes of game play. So the longer you play the more money you would put in. If you were good at space invaders as an example, you would have to put dollars and tens of dollars to play. I am not sure if you are a bot or not, but I am shaking my head in disbelief about this comment.
This is really cool, i used to play Sonic 1 on my old Switch. and so i'm very excited to see how this plays out, my friend is also a huge sonic fan. can't wait! : )
Fun fact: Sonic on the Genesis has always been playable (and beatable!) with an Atari 2600 joystick. Here's how: The trick is to input the stage select code with a standard Genesis controller first. Then you can hot swap to an Atari controller of your preference. Pressing the fire button behaves like pressing A & C simultaneously, which allows you to start the game from the stage select menu (but not from the default title screen!) This 2-in-1 button has no adverse affect on Sonic's ability to jump at all. The only thing you lose is the ability to pause. Bonus fact: Streets of Rage is also beatable this way, but you have to be creative in the options menu regarding whether you sacrifice Attack, Jump, or Special to the now-unusable B button. Choose wisely!
I wish they would release the SF2CE Premium Player with other fighting games and the co/vs cable. SF Alpha, Xmen COTA, Darkstalkers, anything would be cool really. I would love a machine with Tekken 1-3 as well. With them having access to Namco and Capcom, it's at least possible one day.
Another great video Jon! If they just use Sonic 1, they should be alright with the setup using just 1 button because the A button is used to access the level select cheat code on the original game. However, if they add Sonic 2, they will need an A and B button if they are going to let the player access the special menus since you are required to press B on specific sounds in the sound test and then A + Start to open the level select. In terms of just playing the games, 1 jump button is fine. But for those who want to dig into debug mode, level select and enter the Super Sonic code, they will probably now be able to do so without some reengineering of the ROM to work with just the A button. I think from a gameplay perspective, this setup could work given the length of the base and the fact that the weight of your hands would be opposite the weight of the monitor section. Also, thanks for mentioning that Sega Genesis Power Arcade Stick. Being a lifetime Genesis fan, in the early days, I was just using the 3 button and 6 button controllers like anyone else. However, when I got a hold of those official sticks and cleaned them up, they give the system a whole new vibe and feel. I should have gotten them back in the 90s. Playing any kind of platformer, beat em up and side scrolling and top down shooters work incredible on this thing. I especially enjoy playing Shadow Dancer on that stick. The buttons are quick and accurate.

This will bring you to Level Select. Inside of the Level Select, there is also a sound test that you can use to enter the remaining codes. For Debug Mode, using the B button, play these sounds in this sequence: 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4 You should hear another ring sound. Press Start on the Sound Test to reboot to the Sega Logo. Afterwards, when the Sonic 2 Logo comes up again, press A + Start. Next, to enter in Super Sonic Mode (Gives the player all of the Chaos Emeralds), once again using the B button, play these sounds in sequence from the Level Select sound test: 4, 1, 2, 6 You will hear the sound made at the end of a bonus level after successfully grabbing a Chaos Emerald. To activate, collect 50 rings or more, jump into the air and if you did it correctly, sonic will basically go Super Saiyan.

i wish Sega would think about releasing there arcade Enduro Racer, Hang on etc, instead of more Sonic Megadrive, i like a bit of Sonic but its so easy to play on any format.
Still, could use a 9-pin controller port to plug an original controller, although how simple the Mega Drive controller is I wouldn't be surprised if someone hacked a port in soon after release, and considering there is start button already on the unit, even a Master System or Atari 2600 controller should work

Eh. I don't need a dedicated player for the blue corkscrew shrew. If they wanted to be really fun and daring, they would have put the Sonic arcade game in there and added a trackball. That's the game most Americans don't even remember exists, along with the arcade version of Duck Hunt that actually lets you shoot the dog.
Sega should learn their lesson from Atgames that people don’t want to play Sonic with terrible emulation, if this joystick player is going to have terrible emulation and controls, they should stop licensing Sonic to these companies! Scott the Woz said Sega needs to stop tarnishing the Sonic brand to these low quality manufacturers!
@ we can’t tell yet until it’s finally released, but Sega has done this junk before with Atgames and gamers are very cautious about this product, if this turns out to be another rubbish system, Sega needs new business partners.
Never played Sonic on a joystick and I can't see the appeal with the joystick. I'll wait until more info comes out (preferably from GenX Grownup!) before I make any judgements on this one
If Sega is doing an arcade project it needs to have their arcade games "Sega Sonic Arcade" and "Sonic the Fighters". Also, we need Knuckles' Chaotix ported to modern consoles.
This is just dumb. A console game on a mini arcade cabinet with terrible button placement. But not just that, a game which, despite the recent delistings, you can play legally and cheap in so many ways I’d probably max out the character limit of the comments if I list them. 2025 might as well be the crash of retro gaming with all these announcements.

It's only the Game Gear games that use the computers with arrows as checkpoints.

The Arcade Stick controller is the only thing I ever use when playing games on the Genny.

Sega keep using the wrong tileset graphics for green hill zone, for years they have used the version with those wooden totems that are just wrong.
