Thank you for the informative video Dr. Todd, I had the umbilical hernia surgery yesterday done at another practice and all they have me was a sheet of paper with instructions. It’s been 12 hours since the surgery, icing often has really has helped. I was prescribed pain medication but I haven’t felt the need to take them. I did get some stool softener power that I’ll take soon since I haven’t had any bowel movements. I feel sore getting up or down but feels like I did a hardcore workout at the gym. Pain would be described as a 1
Your videos are amazing. I’m sure all of your patients are lucky to have you as their doctor! I just had open surgery for umbilical. Just got home. What type of diet do you recommend? I did eat a nice meal right now. I was starving I didn’t go completely under. General anesthesia was used just brought to make me sleep. I didn’t need a ventilator. I’ll be honest. I just ate a lot. Chicken, rice, meat. Damn it.
@@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists when can I have sex? I had open umbilical surgery a week ago and had sex yesterday. I have a horrible sex addiction. I went easy. Nothing bothered me. I’m just worried about mesh displacement. What can cause mesh displacement?
My doctor wrote on a piece of paper that walking was OK and good for you. After 30 hours I walked for an hour. After 54 hours I walked 1 1/2 hours every evening as usual. In hindsight I would not have done this. On the 9th day I fell at home / slipped on the carpet and hit my neck on a sharp corner of a table which worried me due to the surgery. Went to the emergency room for a neck Catscan. You really explain it well to take it easy.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen. What he says about ice worked great for me. 75 year old male with open mesh right inguinal hernia repair. I was in a fair amount of pain in post op (about 7 out of 10) but they controlled that and got it down to a 3. I started icing in the car on the way home and stayed with it almost constantly for the rest of the day and most of yesterday. At about 48 hrs. I have stayed almost pain free ( 1-2 tops) and walking lots. Only opioids I had was in hospital but constipation is still a factor even with stool softeners and prune juice. Starting Metamucil to see how that works. Good luck to anyone reading this. Think ice! P.S. I have been using Tylenol and advil.
The worse problem is constipation, and getting it out without using pressure. I think there should be a medication/diet regime post surgery, to make it easy. Personally I had to use a lot of force to get it out. I don't think I damaged the repair though.
I don’t know why the doctors in California think patients only need regular Tylenol after surgery. I’ve experienced a couple of doctors who think that. Patient has been cut on and they need pain pills. Not regular Tylenol/ Advil.
My surgeon described my hernia as "a tear in the fascia." Why do you refer to it as a tear in the muscle? Do you describe it that way to dumb it down for the average person to understand?
Fascia is connective tissue around muscles which help support them and attach them to surrounding bones and other structures. Hernias are holes in either the fascia or muscle and sometimes both.
I’ve read that blood clots/DVT is a concern after surgery for up to 3 months, particularly with laparoscopic procedures. Is that true or does that apply to specific situations and people?
DVT's can occur after any surgery, but after small straight forward hernia repairs it is almost 0%. Surgeries which require immobilization afterwards place patients at an increased risk.
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists Thank you, Dr. I had surgery on Tuesday, April 9, and plan on showering today, Thursday. I received the following wound instructions... "The dressing may be removed 48 hrs after surgery. You may shower then. DO NOT SCRUB OR SUBMERGE THE INCISIONS IN WATER. Pat them dry. Please do not pick at the Steri-Strips and allow them to fall off on their own. There is a surgical glue (dermabond) over your incision that will fall off on its own in 1-2 weeks. You may shower. Do not scurb or submerge the incision in water. Pat them dry. Please do not pick at the glue and allow it to fall off on its own. Keep the wound clean and dry when not showering." My question, Dr. I'm confused about the instruction. "Do not submerge incision in water. What is your take on this matter? It's going to get some water runoff from shampooing and face washing, I understand that aiming the stream from the shower can't be done. Please explain in layman's terms!!! Much appreciated, kind friend . Thank you!!! Danny

Thank you for sharing your comments. Our nurses recommend a 'bland' diet for 24-48 hours then return to normal.

Thank you for sharing your comments. We advise patients to take stool softeners for days before the procedure if they are prone to constipation.

What about showers?
We allow our patients to shower 24 hours after their surgery.
