I’ve been having pain after hernia repair surgery in 2016, so seven years now. Bilateral hernias. The surgeon repaired the right side only and I have pain daily; the pain can be worse during barometric pressure changes (weather, dampness, cold) and doing physical activity, like gardening. I’ve been holding off from doing the surgery on my left side. Ways I deal with the chronic pain: Penetrex pain salve, Arnicare gel, ibuprofen, stretching and strengthening exercises, meditation, trying not to get emotionally stressed. Also very helpful is using a recliner whenever possible so I’m not having to sit upright, which places pressure on the repair area. The recliner I use comes from a local discount store (outdoor type furniture) and costs from $40.00 to $70.00. Right now, after consulting with my surgeon, I will likely have a neurectomy procedure on my right side. I’m fortunate that the pain doesn’t bother me when sleeping! Hoping that any of you suffering from this pain condition can be helped out one way or another.

Experienced this since the surgery, constant pain for over 17 years. Had many nerve blocks, pain medications, never had the surgery redone, due to the fact no surgeon wanted to fix it. Now I found a surgeon to do it, but at my age I don't want the pain to be worse. So I live with the pain.
So sorry to hear that. I am awaiting surgery but having read the complications I feel more compelled to try the natural way of just strengthening the core muscles.

I had hernia surgery 8 months ago and I have off and on groin pain. My surgeon gave me nerve pills to help relieve the pain but i don't want to get addicted to those . Is this normal what I am experiencing ? I had a a CT scan 4 months ago and they said all was fine and I saw my surgeon 2 months ago and he didn't see anything.

I've just had a right hand side inguinal hernia mesh repair done. Only 12 days ago now, here in the UK. It was done with open surgery and a general anaesthetic. I too had bruising and slight swelling of the penis and scrotum, which thankfully has now gone.
I have got a swelling and hardness feeling right under the incision though. The scar looks good with no signs of redness or inflammation. There is a slight numbness around the scar area. I do get a sharp pain when getting out of bed, but this does get easier if I roll out instead.
After watching this video and reading the comments. It has certainly helped me to understand but, hopefully, allay the fears I might have of it turning into something more chronic.
My first hospital check up after surgery is due in 4 weeks time. When I'm hoping the swelling, numbness and any twangs of pain will have subsided.

Unbelievably with your query, I'm currently off work having suffered a fall from a ladder, from quite a height. I landed on my feet but unfortunately broken my heel bone (Calcaneous).

@@piecesofme8531 Thank you. It's been 7 months since I broke my heel bone. I'm not in a great place with that at the moment, but I'm hoping it's just a question of time. I've been back at work full time now since last December. Still spongy around the ankle and I'm getting some weird nerve pain which moves around. I'm still optimistic that in 12 months time, things should be vastly improved.
My physio though has been a complete joke. She has been useless, and that's really putting it mildly.

Nick, Numbness immediately after surgery is 100% normal. This numbness usually resolves within weeks to months. Good luck in your recovery, CAHS
I had chronic pain on the right side of my pelvis area for over a year. I thought I pulled my hip flexor muscle. I continued to workout and run. I would do hip flexor stretches everyday. The pain would not subside.
Finally went to see a physician, who conducted a physical exam and immediately believed I had inguinal hernia. He verified as such with a subsequent MRI.
I had right inguinal hernia repair approximately two weeks ago, with mesh placement. World of difference. Almost back to 100%, running again with light weight workouts.

@@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists Please give me an advice. Had lichtenstein method after a recurrent inguinal hernia after a TAPP method 1.5 year ago. This happened 15 days ago. My mobility and deep pain is much better but i experience hard scar tissue under the incision and pretty often dump pain around it. Also some strong needle like pain for some movement lower at the tights. Is this still normal after 15 days? I feel a lot of discomfort all the time still.

Wish my surgeon had spent as much time to explain what is transpiring. He just said he's going to cut a nerve to help with minimizing pain and the nerve has a tendency to repair itself in a year to a year and a half... Thank you as the manner in which you presented your procedure helped me understand just what is going to take place and the effects of having the nerve cut. I am not going to stop my surgeon from cutting it and if there is some sort of permanency to the procedure that does not interfere with daily functions or keep me from realizing when I have a problem I am fine with it.
Don Burch, Some surgeons opt to cut some of the small nerves in the groin during open surgery. This isn't something that has been shown to be helpful or hurtful to patients in any way so it comes down to surgeon preference. Best of luck at your upcoming surgery, CAHS
Dr. Harris, Just to make sure: I had an inguinal hernia repair done about 6months ago. All good, no pain and healing well. Just making sure it's normal to feel some occasional very mild sharp shooting electric kind of pain in the groin and sometimes in the scrotum? It only lasts for a second or so and only about once a day or less. Been doing a lot of running and other sports.
Hallitse, Having occasional sharp pains/tugs/pulling/etc is normal and can last up to a year. Usually at that point those symptoms get less frequent and eventually go away completely. Best, CAHS
Dear Dr. Todd S. (Smart) Harris, what you told me is exactly what happened and is happening. I have been exercising fairly intensely five days a week, which according to your opinion had cause some inflammation of the operating area at the right (none at the left despite that the repair was bilaterally, hernia to the right, preventative to the left). As you said the pain is going away, despite that I keep on exercising, ordinarily I take Ibuprofen (200mg bid) and Aspirin (325mg bid), I do this to prevent migraine headaches (on advise to a neurologist about 30 years ago), it works for me. Again, I am grateful to your wise advise and your high human qualities.

where are you at now with this? I am about a month and 2 weeks postop bilateral inguinal repair and have had the nerve entrapment pain in upper thigh since 3 days post op..it was determined via ultrasound femoral nerve was hit..at least thats what the pain specialist said and they cant be sure yet" whatever that means...wondering if i need neurontin or what as the injections havent helped almost a week into getting them..im super angry because i am very active and this nerve pain has now debilitated me as much as the hernia did wtf..very frustrating and I dont want revision surgery. any answers or a solution would be appreciated

@@psalmsurfer1 : Similar question as you. Unfortunately, I had to have my left inguinal hernia repair with mesh operated again, several months after the surgery. Mesh had curled around the spermatocord, causing tremendous pain. My original hernia surgeon didn't want to operate cuz he couldn't remove it. So had it removed partially in Fl. Was doing very well until one year after mesh removal--pain came back! Sharp and very inflamed. Removal surgeon said it was the left over mesh irritating the nerves and any scar tissue around that area. I had Radio Frequency Ablation done on the illioliginual nerve and that has help alot! Unfortunately, there is on-going inflammation and at times it creates pain. I still ice and take NSAIDs. When inflammation is under control, I am nearly pain-free.
well not too long after my original comment a year ago it was determined via MRI that the nerve pain in my thigh was actually due to a lumbar fracture I had incurred a month before the hernia surgery and thankfully it went away on its own..subsided etc and has not returned since knock on wood so I am glad I waited it out..glad you are pain free.

I am currently at 6 weeks post-op of my open inguinal hernia repair (female). Below the incision and near the location of the hernia is still numb to the touch as well as the skin generally feeling sensitive in that crease of the groin. I know it's only been about a month and a half, but is this normal for now?
Also, I generally don't have too many sharp pains anymore from the surgery anymore but i do sometimes feel a dull ache, which I have been feeling for about the past 3-4 days. Is some pain like this at this time still relatively normal? I keep getting worried that the hernia came back!
Faerielix, All the symptoms you are describing sound 100% normal. Numbness usually resolves over the course of weeks/months and the aching usually resolves as well. Best, CAHS

Still numbness like you describe . Bad scarring and damaged nerve keep the chronic pain. The dullness is ever present and sharp/pinching is painful. I didn't know I had nerve damage until this year :/
Hi, I had a laparoscopic repair done on dual inguinal hernias about 5 years ago. The right one was diagnosed as quite big, the left one quite small. Afterwards the surgeon said the left one was actually really big internally, he had problems during the OP and wouldn't have repaired that side laparoscopically had he known beforehand. After the OP my right side healed without issues. My left leg was always weak, but that never really bothered me much. About six months ago I got COVID and it left me with chronic cramps in both legs. I have been taking magnesium and potassium tablets daily since then and the cramps have all but gone in my right leg. In my left leg I still have (different) chronic pains and It feels like the source is my femoral nerve. From the OP or maybe the mesh? Flossing exercises seem to help and my leg is getting stronger. Work in progress.

I'm recovering from my Inguinal hernia repair (left side), by robotic surgery 3 weeks ago, almost total rest, just the regular stuff like walking to the car, office, market and not lifting any heavier weight that probably 7-9lb; before the surgery I was plenty active, going to the gym 5 to 6 days a week.
My problem started since the day of the surgery, my left leg had been in pain since i walked out of the hospital, and it has not improved at all, feels like if the glute and lateral muscles were not working and only my front muscle (Rectus femoris, looking into google), is lifting the complete leg when walking, and that creates an almost permanent cramp on this muscle and also in the groin and glute.
In your video you said mostly of the nerves are not motor nerves, what do you think may be causing it? and what can be done to improve or decrease the pain? At least to walk normally, I feel I can not stand completely straight because it causes pain in the groin and the leg.
Manlio, I have not heard of patients getting cramps in their muscles after surgery for 3 weeks. I would suggest seeing your surgeon so he or she can examine you and determine the best treatment.

Hi, I have recently undergone hernia operation in the abdominal area (on 18.02.2021), and it was quite a complicated laparoscopic surgery as per my surgeons because of how big the hernia was. Post-operation, not only have I been experiencing symptoms of low blood pressure but also a lot of back pain (both upper and lower), esp. on the right side of my back for last week or so. My surgeons asked me to get another ultrasound done in addition to blood test and urine test, so as to ensure there are no kidney stones or malaria or jaundice, but the reports so far have been regular. I have been unable to sleep at all for three days due to extreme back pain. Is this a normal consequence of laparoscopic hernia surgery? What can I do to ensure that the back pain goes away? Any suggestion would be much appreciated!
Seema, Back pain is not a common occurrence after a laparoscopic hernia repair. Taking anti-inflammatories might be of benefit but you would probably be best served to discuss with your surgeon and/or your PCP. All the best, CAHS
Dr, I know we never met nor know each other but, you have been the most helping person to me after my inguinal hernia repair. My hernia got a little big(4½ yrs with an inguinal hernia) and my surgeon, who himself is a professor of General Surgery, (he also wrote a book named Bedside Clinics in Surgery) was a little concerned but told me it'll all be okay as good as new in weeks. It's been 3 weeks since my Open Surgery and though I have a little pain in the area but I hope I'll be fine, Thank you❤🌹😊

Im at the moment on my 3rd week post from open inguinal hernia surgery by using mesh.
Recovery has been good and on 2nd week my moving became less limited by pain. However now when walking up stairs slightly careless (forgetting momentarily facts of recovery), I felt sudden sharp pain on the hip area next to the scar from surgery. Pain was straight from outer side of scar to sonewhere perhaps around anterior superior iliac spine or inguinal ligament attachment area if Im correct with anatomy here.
Is this normal during my stage of recovery? Pain is not constant, but more like tied to movement.
Other question is about physical appearance of operated area.
My operated left side look definitely diffirent than not operated healthy right side.
Underneath the scar there is this slight empty or shrunken area. Will this settle during time and is it typical/normal after repair?

Teemu, having sharp pains during the first 2-3 weeks after hernia surgery is extremely common and nothing to be alarmed about. I'm sure by the time you have your follow up appointment your pains will be almost resolved. Good luck, CAHS

How have u been since mate? I have similar issues and I’m just 4 weeks after the same op. I get sharp pains lately that I hadn’t got the first 3 weeks. Got a shot of pain last night while out in the cold, nerve issues I presume
Also, I have a hard lump of tissue (scar I presume) under the incision line and it’s probably normal but annoying. Did u have same and if so, for how long?

Tehri, We usually recommend the least invasive options first for any issues that patients have. A nerve block would be less invasive than a neurectomy and often is all that is required. Good luck, CAHS

Monika, It's very common for patients who have had a hernia repair to be concerned about the hernia when they develop pain in the groin. 99% of the time, these patients have simply pulled a muscle or have a strain which has nothing to do with the hernia repair itself. We advise our patients to take anti-inflammatories, rest, and give it 2-3 weeks. We hope that helps, CAHS
Doctor, mesh site feels tender and there is in and out some burning/pulling pain at surgery site where mesh is placed. is this normal? Till how long it lasts? Its been 1 and half month since surgery.

Dear Doctor, I underwent a bilateral Inguinal hernia Laparoscopic repair on Sep 18th...I had got a right inguinal open surgery done 8 years ago which eventually failed.... I am into tennis and very eager to get back to my game. I am wearing hernia briefs now and also plan to wear the same along with my sports boxers when I start playing... I get mild pain once in a while on my right leg and at times mild swelling in the groin region after extensive walks. Upon doing a ice pack massage the pain and swelling goes off. My surgeon insisted me to start off jogging and there on start off with my game. I am bit sceptical and waiting for few more days to start off. Please advice in case it is right time for me to to start off with my game or shall I wait for few more days/months.

After reading all these comments, if my small inguinal hernia is not causing any symptoms, it seems it may be better to do nothing, rather than risk some very real long-term side effects of surgery, that may be very hard or impossible to resolve.
Steven Meyer, In our office, we always support patients who prefer to watch their hernia instead of having surgery. Studies show that about 25% of patients with a hernia will never need surgery. All the best, CAHS

Doctor, had right inguinal hernia repair 1 year after cystectomy, and now have chronic burning pain to the right of my stoma. Could the pain be from the hernia repair, even if it's above the area of repair? Nobody wants to do additional surgery due to the urostomy, and nothing helps the pain.
Steve you're a smart dude. I have three hernias but will not have surgery. Be sure to look up proper exercises as well as to purchase a truss or a weight belt.
@@annettegenovesi4012 Well, too years later. Now it is September 10, 2020 and am still doing well with no pain or problems at 71. Still mow two properties each week and walk a lot. If it gets large or causes symptoms, I will get surgery. I do not lift over 50 pounds.

Hi, I'm currently 6 weeks post op from open inguinal surgery. Everything was fine until about the end of the 1st week where I started getting intense pain to the point of being unable to stand or sit. I was told that a small seroma has formed. That pain has subsided but not gone. I was curious to know how long does this last or could it be nerve damage/entrapment? I'm also still sensitive to touch at the operation site.
Any info would be appreciated.
Sarah, Small seromas are very common after any surgery, including hernia surgery. They almost always resolve with time as the body reabsorbs the fluid. As the seroma resolves, any associated discomfort should improve as well. Best, CAHS

If the ilioinguinal nerve is relatively easy to find is it not being careful during surgery that can cause this type of injury? For example, a surgeon not being well skilled with robotic assisted? And can mesh be incorrectly placed causing injury to this nerve? Can your hospital help with this type of injury?
Nerve injury causes can be difficult to pinpoint. Mesh placement, and being aware of the path of nerves helps reduce risks.
Thanks for posting this video. I have a mild inguinal hernia. My surgery is scheduled in a few weeks, but I'm a bit scared. (I'm an American living in China - health care is cheap here, but you get what you pay for.) I should just pay extra and fly to your clinic to get the work done.

I had left inguinal open surgery last week (UK based) and I have chronic lower left back pain. Sharp stabbing pains mostly when I’m walking but it can come on when I’m laying
SL, Having back pains after a hernia surgery is not very common. Some patients get stiff from the lack of activity after hernia surgery, but it usually does not cause back pain itself. There might be another cause of you back issues which hopefully resolves soon. Best, CAHS
Is the robotic assisted direct inguinal hernia repair more likely to damage the the ilioguinal nerve compared to open surgery on the outside of the abdominal wall?
Most surgeons have found that the posterior approach to inguinal hernia repair preserves the nerves better than an anterior approach (open).
Hi Doc, I have had a inguinal hernia surgey with mesh. I wasn't given any medication after the surgery. I recovered fairly quickly. However , 3 months later I woke up with flu like symptoms. And recovered after 10 days. However, since then I am continously (at least 4 times during a month) am having anus swelling/irritation and burning/itching after passing stool and also yellow poop looking discharge a couple hours after. When I walk for 40 minutes I sense a discomfort where the mesh has been placed and when I get home I notice again the discharge. Could it be that the mesh has infected my Gastrointestinal organ?
Thetruth, The symptoms you are describing would have nothing to do with a hernia repair. Often a colo-rectal surgeon would be able to examine patients with those symptoms to determine their cause. Best, CAHS
Hello, is it common to get pain in the knee post ingrunal hernia repair? I have been in pain for the last month (post op).. does the surgery affect L3 or L4 nerves ?
Tend10d, We haven't heard of any patients with knee pain after surgery. Hernia repairs do not typically affect any of the lumbar nerves. Best, CAHS
CAHS, what is your opinion on having inguinal hernia surgery under local anesthetic, as opposed to spinal anesthetic or general anesthetic?
Steve, Depending on the technique used, local anesthetic (often with some sedation) can be an option for certain patients. Best, CAHS
Had an inguinal hernia repair laparoscopically with a mesh after a work injury. I’ve been in constant pain since and most doctors dismissed me. I received one successful nerve block on my genital femoral that was $1k. This temporarily relieved my pain but eventually it came back and it’s hard for me to stand for periods of time and I’m only 24. My pain tolerance has gotten to where nothing hurts or phases me like my “hip pain” does. My family just looks at me and shrugs.. what can I possibly do? There is so much wrong with my case but at this point I just want to not be in constant 6-10/10 pain. If anything it was just nice hearing a doctor tell me exactly what I’m experiencing and that it is a real thing...
Kyle, We're sorry to hear about your pain after your surgery. Some pain specialists can perform additional procedures such as steroid injections or even ablation of a nerve if they find that the pain is being caused by one specific nerve. Since your pain injection worked, albeit for a short period of time, you may have other options with a pain specialist in your area. Good luck, CAHS

Reilly's, Developing sciatica would be completely independent of an inguinal hernia repair since that nerve runs in a completely different area than where the surgery was performed. Best, CAHS

Stevie B, You are correct. Each patient should decide on whether their hernia causes enough symptoms to warrant having hernia surgery. Even though the risks are extremely low, the risk/benefit ratio for any procedure, including hernia surgery, should always be considered by a patient before deciding to proceed. I have 3 hernias but did my homework on the computer and have had no surgery yet as I can't find a doctor who won't use the mesh. Thank G-d I didn't. Many people pressured me heavily, acting quite scornful that I doubt the great doctors. It's hard not to let that influence you.

I had three hernias repaired (laparoscopically), one umbilical and one inguinal on both sides. My left side (the biggest hernia as well with fat dropping down into my testicle) had testicle soreness and was sensitive to touch which is why I sought out surgery in the first place. I am 3 weeks post op and my left testicle is still sensitive and sore to the touch. I also have a benign 8mm cyst on my left testicle but my dr said he does not believe that should be an issue. My Dr said I should be fine, but if it doesn’t get better by two months post op he will send me to a urologist. Do you think this sensitivity and soreness will get better? Thank you Dr.
freakATtheWAL, Testicle soreness and sensitivity is 100% normal and is seen in most men after surgery. This always resolves but sometimes can take weeks to months. Best, CAHS
Thank you for this. male - 62 yrs / I am 10 days out from robotic lap repair of a small right inguinal hernia. A lymphnode was also removed. All was fine for about 4 days until, with various movement, I started feeling acute ripping, tearing, stabbing pain that then turned into burning pain. Very intense. There is/was swelling and its difficult to wear compression shorts. The follow up visit after 7 days concluded with me being told I have a seroma. 3 days later, while visiting my PCP, I cleared my throat and shot out of the chair in pain. He said something was not right. That night, the surgeon ordered an emergency ct. All that it showed was a post operative seroma 35 x 24mm in the region of the repair along with 37 x 29mm fluid extending into the right inguinal canal. Would a ct w contrast show nerve damage? I am a veteran of surgeries including partial neph, shoulder replacement and ACL reconstruct. Never ever felt like this. Is there a way to distinguish between seroma discomfort and onset of debilitating nerve pain? Ultra sound perhaps? With appreciation-thank you.
Robert, We tell our patients that they can feel some tugging, burning and other small discomforts for months and up to a year after their surgery. These improve significantly over the first weeks then months but can last a bit longer. Best, CAHS

Question to Dr. Harris: after my Bilateral Laparoscopic hernia repair using light weight Atrium mesh the recovery was fast, one week after surgery I was at the Gym exercising half "steam", two weeks after surgery I was exercising full steam and no pain. However, 5 weeks after my surgery (three days ago) I started having pain on my right upper thigh just small part of my upper thigh, it is tolerable burning pain wich disappears shortly after I start walking. Could this be connected to trauma of to genital branch of the genito-femoral nerve, and if so would this disappear with time? Knowing that in my Gym in CA there are a lot of men exercising and knowing that 23% of men will get inguinal hernias (higher percentage for men that exercise), the issue is very important. I sure would appreciate your answer. I will check the Q & A of this video in a few days. Thank you.
John, at this point, it is more likely that with your increased activity, you've caused a little bit of inflammation in the groin which is causing the burning sensation that you are feeling. We encourage our patients to try a 2-3 week course of anti-inflammatories if they are having any discomfort. At 5 weeks, there is still some swelling that will improve over the coming months. Hello Doc! Thanks a lot for providing useful information. I am 3 months post inguinal hernia Op of bilateral hernia done via Laparoscopic technology. I have recently noticed some swelling on both the side and right one is more significant. I haven't lifted anything heavy till now. Could it be a recurrence? There is no pain but there is a bulge where hernia was. Thanks
Dave, Some patients can develop a small seroma, or fluid collection, after their surgery. This usually resolves over time, sometimes 3-6 months. Although it could be a recurrence, it would certainly be a very short time to have a recurrence and to have it on both sides would again be very unusual. Your surgeon might be able to help determine the cause, but also waiting for another couple of months might be beneficial. Good luck, CAHS
Thanks alot Sir! I saw my surgeon today and he said there is no recurrence and nothing to be worried about. The swelling will reduce as the time passes. Can I request you to make one informative video to explain what happens to the Mesh after the surgery. Just a timeline over six months or a year after the surgery. Would be beneficial for many of us.

@@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists I had hernia surgery on June 29th and I get occasional swelling which I was told happens during the recovery process and it is fluid building in my body that helps with the healing process. I saw my surgeon on Sept 26th and he said no hernia reoccurrence. This swelling could continue for up to 6 months or more.

I had right inguinal hernia TEP surgery 10 days ago. 6 days after the surgery I got lower back pain on the right side. Can you please explain can that be connected with some post-operative complication?
Many patients get stiff and sore from not being as active during the recovery process as they are used to being. After returning to exercise and activities most patients find their stiffness and back pains improve dramatically.
I'm 7 months post laparoscopic bilateral inguinal hernia repair. The week after surgery my right side repair had dull aching pain, the left side had intense sharp stabbing pain. Now 7 months later I have the same type of pain on both sides but reduced about 75% in both frequency and severity. It gets triggered by light activity activity such as playing catch. I'm worried the left side has nerve damage because the pain is sharp, stabbing, and gets easily triggered 7 months post op. Do you think this is nerve damage and should I get tested for nerve damage?

Sharp shooting pains for days after any surgery, including hernia surgery, it 100% expected and normal and usually resolves within days. We hope you're feeling more back to normal at this point.
Can anyone please help. Had inguinal hernia open mesh surgery done 2 weeks ago. Where the incision is there is a big bulge/hard lump where the hernia used to be. Is this the mesh I can feel or is something wrong? When I press it, it is rock hard and wont move but its bulging quite a bit and I'm worried the mesh is not right. Other than that the pain has subsided a lot and the scar seems to be healing fine on the outside. Any ideas thank you?
Jake, Having swelling after surgery in the area of the hernia, and feeling like the hernia is still there, is 100% normal. This swelling and firmness always goes away over the coming weeks/months. Best, CAHS
I am 2 weeks out of open inguinal hernia repair. I get short bouts of extreme excruciating pain usually sitting and out of nowhere it happens. Also happens when putting any kind of bending pressure on my left side with my leg involved. It usually lasts for a minute. At what point do I recognize this as chronic? Is it too early to make that call?
Having sharp pains 2 weeks after any surgery, including a hernia repair, is not uncommon. As the inflammation and swelling from the surgery resolves, most patients have an ongoing resolution of their symptoms.
Very informative! I had inguinal hernia surgery(Laparoscopic surgery) for both sides two days ago. Everytime I put weight on my right leg it feels like my leg is on fire. When I lay in bed the pain is present but minor if still. It is quite numb as well

I've been driving again, I typically will lift my right leg into my vehicle as lifting it is quite uncomfortable. I've noticed fluctuating pain when I pee that can be mild to severe haha. It seems like the mesh is taking well, I did some very light shadow boxing today. I'm trying to avoid sneezing, its happened twice and not a good time

I had a left inguinal hernia surgery one year ago and I have been always feeling some discomfort, but it wasn't pain. Recently, I thought I was completely healed and started to lift at the gym again. Past several weeks I have been feeling some sharp pain in my groin area between my leg and left testicle area when I do certain moves, stand up fast or bend over to pick up something. I stopped working out for one week. Do you think I have a damaged nerve or did I strain the surgery area? Would this pain go away or should I go to a pain clinic and get a numbing injection? Sir, I had my left inguinal mesh repair surgery last April 2020. It's been about 3 months but I still feel chronic pain in my surgery, especially when lying down. I have also observed a bulge in the mesh specifically when walking. Would it resolved in time? Thank you for your response.
Aldrain, It can take months for swelling and scar tissue to completely resolve after any surgery, including hernia surgery. Sometimes massaging the area and heat packs can help. It would be very unusual to be able to feel the mesh since most meshes are placed UNDER the muscles in the area of the hernia. What you are feeling is much more likely to be normal swelling and scar tissue. All the best, CAHS

Dr Harris i underwent open inguinal hernia surgery plus left orchidopoxy at the same time but at the 2 week i m feeling swelling under my wound. Is it usual or should i visit my doctor again. What cautions and measures i should take. ??
zemalify, We almost always see swelling under the incisions in our patients after surgery and it is nothing to be alarmed about. We tell our patients that it can take weeks, and sometimes months, for the incision to flatten out and to not be raised. We tell our patients to expect occasional pulls and tugs for a year as the scar tissue and healing loosens up after the surgery.
Hello doctor, I hope you can help me. I had bilateral inguinal hernia repair in 01/2020 with mesh repair using laparoscopy technique. My left side groin/pelvic area has been having pain since. Sometimes the pain radiates to my scrotum and near my anus. Sometimes the pain is directly below my belly button. I have no restriction on movement. The pain intensity varies from day to day, but it's always there. The pain is mostly dull, touching it or moving doesn't really make it better or worse. The pain level is usually very minimal when I sleep. And the pain starts again when I get out of the bed. Can you give me any recommendations on who to see or what to do? I have seen physical therapist, chiropractor, and acupuncture therapist so far, the only thing that seems to work somewhat is with ultrasound therapy.

Female here. I had a right inguinal hernia and went for laparoscopic mesh repair.
Whilst in there the suegeon discovered i had another hernia on my left side as well and both were repaired with mesh It has only been a few days but the right side feels pain and tugging. I will see my doc in a week but i don't know if i should schedule something sooner. Is this normal to feel so much tugging and discomfort 5 days after the surgery?

Kahlan, Pulling, tugging, soreness, and some pains are all normal after any surgery, including hernia surgery. This wouldn't seem like something that would be outside of the expected post operative course. Best, CAHS

As patients return to normal activities, the increased load can cause some of the inflammation and scar tissue to loosen resulting in symptoms of burning and other pins and needles like pains. Usually these resolve with more activity and time.
Addendum to previous comment: the pain in the upper thigh is intensifying, I was doing really well. Could this be a trauma to the genital branch of the genito-femoral nerve, and if so what is the solution, the pain still bearable, but what if doesn't go away or gets worse? ive just had same issue post op bilateral hernia repair fking hell mate..its awful..got the injections which seem to have made crap worse..lucky me. I am super angry and may sue for malpractice.

When you say after they cut ilioinguinal nerve over time sensation “usually returns” does that mean back to normal or its forever different feeling? After my left radical orchiectomy my inner upper thigh and upper scrotum feel numb.
James, Cutting the ilioinguinal nerve will have some numbness afterwards, but over time the surrounding nerves can compensate for the lack of an ilio-inguinal nerve. There may be some residual reduced sensation around the upper thigh and scrotum, but will likely be less than it is immediately after surgery. Best, CAHS

I had 2 hernia mesh repairs in 2000, 2001 with the Marlex mesh from Bard and live with severe chronic intractable pain every day. If there was a way to have the hernia repairer without using a mesh, I’d advise that. Any time you place a foreign object into the body, you risk an autoimmune response and possible nerve pain.

35DeerHunter, I'm sorry to hear that you've been having pain after your hernia repair. As you've heard from other doctors, pain after surgery can be difficult to treat. There are some options for those patients who are having pain which impacts their quality of life. Often we send patients to a pain specialist to have nerve injections. This can temporarily help with the pain, and allow us to identify what is causing your pain. They can sometimes provide injections to permanently reduce the pain as well. As a last resort, we can sometimes surgically remove the nerves to help with the pain. And as a final option, there are times when removing the mesh will help with your pain. Again, we wish you the best in your situation. CAHS

35DeerHunter me too. Had bilateral inguinal and femeral hernias. They stitched my nerve into the scar. Opened me up again, cut the nerve....now it constantly burns, shocks and itches. But, it’s numb on the surface. It is horrific 😔

Steve Scott it’s definitely not psychological. That’s offensive for them to say to you. I’ve had the four hernias done twice now. First time, I caught staph and was left with a baseball size hole in my groin that they packed with silver rope. After I’d spent six weeks in hospital for blood poisoning. Then, they’d stitched the nerve, as I said, and they tried to convince me that I was overreacting. I knew I wasn’t. So, they went in again for another repair with more mesh and they had to cut the nerve away as it was embedded into the healing scar. Now, it’s numb on the surface, but with those shocking moments all the time. The burning and the icy shocks. It itches but is numb so I can’t scratch it! I have to insist on help. I’ve been on amitriptoline for nerve pain but it’s not working. So, today I’m going to GP for pain killers. It’s the only thing that relives it enough for comfort. I don’t care anymore about painkiller addiction......I just need relief. Have you been on any sort of nerve pain drugs? They may help you, didn’t help me, but you should give them a go. Yes, it’s like going to the local butcher shop for surgery. A year is too long for the surgery you needed, it’s dangerous to leave certain hernias. I only waited a week once it was discovered as it was high risk of strangulation. Do not let them convince you that it’s in your head. They do that a lot. It’s not, you’re not. Going mad, you’re in pain and nerve pain is relentless. 🌹

Shoal, Nerve pains after hernia surgery can happen, albeit infrequently. Having a pain specialist perform a nerve injection can often help relieve the symptoms and help guide further treatments. Best, CAHS
@@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists It has been 8 months since my hernia repair. They did a CT scan 4 months ago and saw no issues. My Surgeon said any pain I'm experiencing is nerve related and i should not be worried and he gave me nerve pills.
I had an open surgery ( laparotomy) to remove my appendix and 3 months later , im feeling pain in the area of the surgery , it's like when your tooth hurts , or when you have a bruise and somebody pressses on it. Can this be a neuropathic pain , the nerves are just getting there senses back ? Please help doctor , i tried ibuprofen but it didn't work
Abouhassan, It would be difficult to provide much direction without examining the area. There are not many nerves in the area of a laparotomy so neuropathic pain would be less common. There could be some ongoing scar tissue which is settling out. Hopefully you return to feeling normal soon. CAHS
What is recommended if chronic pain 4 months after robotic surgery of an Inguinal hernia. Pain is at rest and worse with movement and exercise.

Hi - I had bilateral inguinal n hernia surgery 12 months ago. I am experiencing continued burning sensations when exercising. - only on one side. Was referred to pain management who gave me two cortisone shots on the scar area. Now, had an ultrasound guided nerve block which seemed to work for a week or two, but back to burning pain when exercising. Docs think it’s ilionguinal neuralgia. What am I to do? Nerve block again?
Some pain specialists can provide nerve ablation to help deaden the nerve. Alternatively, surgeons can perform a neurectomy to remove the affected nerve.
Thank you. My surgeon yesterday indicated it may be the nerve is imbedded in scar tissue, and suggests an additional nerve block and to try physical therapy (PT). Is PT something you’ve seen help patients with ilioinguinal nerve pain?

I had an umbilical hernia repaired 21 months ago. After about 9 months I was able to get back to normal but now recently I've been getting flare ups and and it bothers me to move around. The flare ups come out of nowhere. Any ideas?

I had a surgery last November 19 2018 on my right groin and I still have a swollen and it's pretty big and my doctor believe it's a Hematoma, what should i do? Jack Daniels, We would always defer to your surgeon since he/she knows what would be best for you. In our practice, we try to avoid operating on hematomas if at all possible since you are correct in the fact that surgery can have complications. Most hematomas will greatly reduce in size over time and some will even resolve completely. If after 6 months or more there is still a large symptomatic hematoma, we occasionally offer surgery. Usman, It would be very unusual for you to be able to feel the mesh since it is located under several layers of muscle and tissue. Much more likely you are feeling swelling and scar tissue which over time will resolve. Best, CAHS

Hello, I am current 5 weeks post Laproscopic bilateral inguinal hernia surgery with mesh(Male). I still have irritating pain at operated site on right side and entire right leg. I can't even walk properly. Doctor said it is nerve pain and mostly damaged due to Laproscopic surgery. I am worried in how much time it will go away?!

It's me, Having testicle swelling 3 years after a surgery is not common. It might be worth having a PCP or surgeon examine you and discuss the situation. Best, CAHS

I do not have a bulge but have some intense burning and soreness in the fold between the upper leg and pubic area. The burning seems to get worse after applying ice. This started a couple days ago after lifting an a/c unit , climbing and moving ladders. The pain also seems to be radiating to the lower back, making sleep very difficult. I've been taking Ibuprofen and Tylenol every four hours, and it seems to help temporarily. Could this still be a hernia, or something else. Thank you.

@@yafet021 Sorry for the delayed reply. Must have been a pull with slight tear, never a bulge. Took it easy for about a month and seems to be fine now. No lifting more than 10-20 lbs.
Doctor, i went through bilateral inguinal hernia, 10 days ago. Now i am getting better in my surgical opening areas, but my right thigh getting numbness and electric pain. Doctor given some tablets but pain is still same , not able to walk , please advise, is that any nerve damage , what will be the way out
Having inflammation of the nerves in the groin after after surgery is not unexpected. It can take weeks to months for some nerve pains to improve.
Hello doc. I had an umbilical open herenia surgery 4 and a half months back. But I still get pain and my stomach gets swollen up when I do any work or when I eat something. Also I had my gall bladder removed along with it. Which one is causing pain. Kindly advice doctor.

Hello Doctor I had a large umbilical hernia repaired with mesh April 15th 2019.. Everything went well recently I've been having sharp pains under my ribs on the left side so bad it makes me cry and takes my breath... I'm not sure what it could be but never had this pain prior to surgery... Should I be concerned.
Soulful Kisses80, Most umbilical hernia surgeries would have nothing to do with the rib cage and pain in the side of the abdomen. Sometimes Costochondritis can cause these types of symptoms. Best, CAHS

Tomos Saggers, I am not sure exactly what technique or procedure you had performed so we wouldn't be able to comment on what the expectations should be after surgery. In our experience, there are no named nerves around the umbilicus and thus there is a very low risk of chronic pain in surgery at the midline. Best, CAHS

Often pain specialists can perform nerve injections into the area of the nerve in question. This can help diagnose and sometimes treat the issue.
What about hiatal hernias. I'm having that repaired. Does anyone know if that is near nerves? Thank you. Appreciate any replies.

Sadly, 12 months after my second double hernia surgery, I have chronic pain. Do you have any recommendations for treatment - ultrasound, CT scan and MRI show nothing. The pain is very real. Thanks!
FariStudiosArt, I'm sorry to hear that you are in pain after 12 months. Often imaging studies do not show any abnormalities although you are clearly in pain. Some patients can benefit from seeing a pain specialist who can perform nerve injections in the area. Often this can help reduce inflammation and reduce pain. Best, CAHS

I had mesh partially removed seven months after placement--as it produced inflammation and mesh curled around the spermatocord and pressed upon nerves--as this was recorded from my mesh-removal-surgeon. I was feeling better a year after that until pain came back--determined it was inflammation from scar tissue in the area and irritation caused by the mesh remaining (not removed due to the fact that the lower leaf mesh was already adhered to my lower ab wall muscle). Current pain doc used nerve blocks to diagnostically find the irritated nerve and do RFA (radio frequency ablation). Doesn't take all the pain away, but does give me ability to work. Also take Gabapentin for remaining pain.
Douglas Smith Man! So sorry to hear it. I’m sending you good vibes so your body can heal fully. As for me, my pain has pretty much subsided. Every now and then if I get constipated I’ll have a little flare up. Like you said, it’s inflammatory so I changed my diet, removed all the foods that create inflammation (diary being number one). And I started doing healing work with my lymphatic system because inflammation was stuck in my body and couldn’t get out. Works wonders. Acupuncture is also very helpful. I didn’t have a surgery to remove the mesh. Instead, I’ve learned how to help my body heal naturally. It works!!!!!!!

We advise our patients that pulling and tugging and stiffness around the area of the hernia repair is very common and can last for months, but resolves over time.
I had a right inguinal hernia repair july of 2020. As of today I still will get a dull ache in my right testicle.. I noticed it more lately after some heavy weightlifting. I've dialed back the heavier weights and have gone lighter. I'm hoping this ache will go away. I'm already feeling similar things on the left side (stomach area). I went to a hernia specialist, he did say there was a 1/7 chance of the other side.
I'm more concerned about the right testicle ache.
Christopher, Thank you for sharing. Your surgeon is correct in that about 20-25% of patients will develop a hernia on the opposite side at some point in their life. It's not clear what is causing your ache in the testicle, but there are small nerves that travel with the arteries and veins to the testicle. Some pain specialists might be able to do a selective injection in that area to see if that helps reduce the aching. Good luck, CAHS

Thanks for this video.. I had laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair Surgery 1 week back. After a day, I felt numbness in my right leg thigh & constantly burns, shocks when I stand, walk & sometimes sleeping. My Doctor says numbness go away (take 200mg ibuprofen 3 with each meal) and about shocks & burns he mentioned that the nerve is activating. Is it true?

Chronic pain are pains which start and/or last for 6 months or more.
I have done open mesh repair surgery for my inguinal hernia. 2 years have been passed but still I have vast constipation I can't even eat due to constipation. Is there any solution for this you can suggest me
AK, Constipation after inguinal hernia surgery is not something that is very common since inguinal hernias do not typically involve any bowel. Constipation would more likely be a separate issue and one that a gastroenterologist might be of help. Best, CAHS

Fluid and edema occur after most surgeries due to tissue injury and inflammation. It resolves spontaneously over days/weeks.

Sir i am 22 year old, i undergone bilateral inguinal hernia open surgery before 7 months. On the right side its a big one and i have pain also,the left side is a small one which was founded only at the time of scanning.the problem was that i am facing some pain on a specific area where near to the opening was done for surgery and there is no sence of touch when i touch on that opened area on right side but the left side is normal i can feel the touch and not at all any problem.also there is a pain on right growin😢

Hello, I had laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair almost 3 weeks ago. I sneezed today and I got a very sharp burning sensation above where the hernia bump used to be. Now I am getting random sharp pains when I move in an awkward position or laugh. Is this normal? Should I call my surgeon?
Tyler, we discuss with patients that they can feel unusual sensations in the area of the surgery for months, up to a year as everything heals completely. It would be rare to have a recurrent hernia from just a sneeze but if you are concerned, certainly seeing your surgeon would be helpful. Best, CAHS

Did u have that hard limping under the incision site and if so, for how long after the op? I’m presuming it’s just scar tissue.
