    I don’t know the background of the majority of your audience but as a contractor for 40 years I’m often asked about truss angle and how we figure it out. Thanks to technology measuring rise/run for slope ratios and Pitch then using a construction calculator saves brain cells for sure. No more homemade protractors and plumbers bobs. Could be a good tutorial for a short for your viewers?❤

      Where our grandparents smarter than us? They used mathematics, a well trained mind...paper and pencil to figure it out. Ah the good old days.

      It's not rocket science. You can simply do it with a framing square , that's why they named that square a framing square

    • @Volusia1
      @Volusia1 Місяць тому +1

      @@jefflinnell8492 it may as well be rocket science to someone with no construction experience. You and I may know how to figure out angle from rise and run but most with no experience may not. My entire point

    To you, sir and madam,
    Congratulations on planning the assembly of the A Frame, now the way the foundation is assembled makes sense, I really liked the way you are carrying out the construction services and it helped me think in an unexpected way. I look forward to the continuation and completion of the construction of your home.
    May God bless you and continue the good work both in construction and filming.

    Looks good. I would suggest adding another row of fire-block between the floor and what you have now. Interested in how your splice will be made for the rest of the skeleton framing. Be safe.

    What’s great about A frames is because of the fact that your roof is basically walls you really don’t have to worry about snow load, so you can essentially just build walls and not worry about most of the typical concerns with building a roof.

      @northtoalaska2022  Місяць тому

      Hello! We do not have a set schedule. We are not full-time "UA-camrs" cranking out weekly videos for monetary benefit. This is just us documenting part of our real-life experience here. We work on these videos in our free time and put a lot of effort into sharing them when possible. If we posted weekly the videos would be fairly incomplete, lacking content, and would need to have a lot of filler or talking so we wait until we can make a more complete video.

    Our much larger family cabin in Mammoth mountain is an A Frame built in 1974 . It’s very well insulated and the biggest problems are 1) heavy snowfall like last year @20ft completely keep us in the dark and was still 3 ft leftv in September . 2) Mechanical systems are very tricky and heat is a must in winter. We ended up installing exposed hot water supply and return to individual terminal units which are noisy as hell but forced doesn’t really work. I’m curious how you plan on handling your heating system.

    I have land I'll eventually be building on and I've always loved A-frames, I think they have a great aesthetic. They're also easier to build, IMO. The downsides are of course less usable interior space due to the sloping walls, which you can't really do much with (the interior walls are very impractical). While you'll no doubt love the snow shedding of your roof, if you have to do maintenance on it, you'll hate your roof, lol. Where the A-frames really pop, IMO, is when the front of them is pretty much all glass, that's the real "wow" and "cool" factor.

    The A frame design looks great but really sucks for head room and useable space. The Gambrel truss is where it's at. With your 24x32' cabin you would have the same amount of space in the downstairs as the whole A frame. A gambrel roof truss is really easy to make too. 4 equal length rafters with equal angles. Makes a strong circle like truss with huge head room.

  • @Codger2015
    @Codger2015 2 місяці тому

    I hope you add some temporary diagonal bracing on the underside of the A-frame members to keep them from being blown over by any strong winds. But then you probably already know to do this. I like the design, excellent work. All I had to do was wait until the 17:09 minute mark to see you are actually doing this.

  • @kurtsmith4657

    Would of been best to screw some straight 2x4's down to the ground to make a template, would of used a few more spacer blocks along the frames and periodically checked plumb w/ an 8ft level. Hope you crowned your lumber up as well. The way you ran that bottom chord is unusal as its a lap joint that puts the load all on the fasteners and is out of plane w/ the uprights, probably would of doubled that up on either side and just through bolted up to keep all things equal. All that being said, bet its gonna be a really cool A frame structure.

    I like it but you need to do get the big long 3 ft I think they make them 5 ft Simpson straps they're 2 inches by 5 ft go and a 45° and strap at 45° angle and tie each of your verticals together it'll help especially when you have earthquakes. And if you build in sere walls that also helps believe it or not do it while you're building and your place will have less damage when you do have an earthquake and you will have earthquakes in Alaska. Also I know that you screwed everything to the foundation strap it to the foundation too it's a little bit more money but it's strapped and that will toughen your foundation from the big one but I like that building

    Nice job for only two of you. Only suggestion I have is you could’ve put 2 blocks loose on the bottom to snug the bottoms against. Then because they weren’t screwed down you just move for the next truss. Or even put one screw in. But it’s all moot because you’re done.

    So you never checked the initial template 'A' by putting it up (even partially) and see if it even fits, once stood up and went all in just off of measurement and a single template cut for all the angles? That's really courageous!
