@TheQ97 No. Mike Nesmith was an experienced guitarist before the Monkees T.V. seies debuted in 1966. He composed DIFFERENT DRUM among others. It was recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies.
RIP DAVY JONES --- you're going to be missed ... I will never forget you - not ever! You were my first 'celebrity' crush! May you ride the skies on beautiful white horses :)
RIP Davey, from a lady who fell in love with you as a little girl and has never ever forgotten you or your music. You were my idol for over 30 years. You'll be missed Davey!!
Despite contrary belief, all of them are very capable musicians/songwriters. While The Monkees was a tv show set up well in advance with songs being submitted by and featuring many soon to be famous musicians behind the scenes (Boyce & Hart, Glen Campbell, Carole King, Neil Diamond, etc.), the Monkees themselves were the key to the band's sound thanks to Mickey's fantastic vocals. Even on the 1st album, Mike wrote/produced Sweet Young Thing & Papa Gene's Blues & Peter played guitar on them.
Actually, MONKEES was a TV show. Dolenz said that after Dave’s death. Their songs were written by other people & none of them were highly accomplished with instruments. They had good vocals, were cute guys and started the BOY BAND concept. BEATLES were REAL musicians & songwriters NOT A BOY BAND. Nothing wrong with the Boy Bands concept but the truth is always relevant.
@@SassaFrass28... Actually Peter torque played in bands before he got this gig... Mike Nesmith was also a musician... Mickey Dolan's was not David Jones was really not
I loved this song growing up. I never heard of the name of Valleri until this song. I named my first daughter after this song. But I spelled it Valerie. I will miss you Davy. RIP God Bless you.
Hey Mr. Tambourine man, play that song to me.... I'm still deep in grief. It's very hard to listen to him and too see him so young now that he did leave us. Gone but never forgotten, Davy my dear
These guys should have been inducted way back into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Davey and the Monkees were very important to pop culture in the late 60's and had great success. Made so many of us happy with the great work they did. We will always love Davey Jones!
Valleri is my favorite song by the Monkees. Looking at Davy's boyishly handsome face, listening to his beautiful voice, feeling his energy gives me goose bumps. Another great person is gone. RIP, Davy. Toni
Wow !! Love the harmonies and excellent guitar work on this classic Monkees' track!! Boyce and Hart excelled on this one!!! All time hit for me. Sends shivers down my spine every time I play it!
Boyce and Hart wrote this tune, as well as many other Monkees gems. Boyce and Hart should have been credited MUCH MORE than they ever were. Where would the Monkees been without Boyce and Hart songs.
This clip came out in March 1967 and later got a lot of radio play as "an exclusive" since it wasn't released as a single. In 1968,a polished version of this song was released to the public (I liked the "unpolished" version better.) THANKS FOR THE GREAT POST!
Oh how I wish he had the heart of a 16 year old.........the world is so badly in need of the kindness, the talent and humanity of Davy Jones.........you will be so missed!
Our generation was blessed having this big titans of music: Beatles, Monkees, Rolling Stones, and many more at the time were they conquer the music world..Many years will pass before such musical impact will be here...Probably we won't be around by the time that'll happen and to see how a little of our youth die, hurts. Harrison, Lennon, Jones...Few of those titans...RIP Davy Jones.
I remember first hearing this take from the television show, and then later, when the single was released, being disappointed that the 45 version was a different take with all those horrible horns added in. This version is the best!! Thanks for posting.
This is from 1966, not 1968. This version of Valleri was recorded 2 years before the re-recording appeared on The Birds, The Bees, & The Monkees in 1968.
Classic Monkees ! My favourite Monkees track.......always loved the riff and the harmonies!! Boyce and Hart were amazing song-writers. Valleri was quite a gal !!
The guitar solo was actually played by Louis Shelton who was in the original Monkees backing band The Candy Store Prophets which was a Boyce & Hart produced group. Nesmith had to fake playing this in early videos and the closeups were edited in with Sheldon actually playing. When the Monkees popularity boomed, they took over creative control and played their own instruments with some session musicians supporting.
Thanks Davey and RIP. Is it just me or does Richard Hammond from Top Gear, UK strike an amazing resemblence? Saw the Monkees in the mid 80s at Wolf Trap in DC on their reunion tour - so glad I was able to see them - great show.
RIP Davy,Pete and Mike. Thanks for the great music in the 60s. Did Davey go back to England after the band finished?Mike was still righting some good songs and Pete I think disappeared back to Washington, his home town. A great band. Mikey still doing stuff around LA.So many great writers they had.🙏
I still prefer the version on "The Birds, the Bees & The Monkees", just for the production values. But this has it's own merits too. I really wish they'd put aside any differences musically or otherwise and all 4 do a tour. Time's running out lads, and there's still a world out there who wants to see you on a stage again.
This recording and film of "Valleri" was made in *1966* and appeared on the TV show's first season. The version released on the '68 album "The Birds & The Bees & The Monkees" is a re-recording with added horns and a more intricate guitar solo. Personally, I prefer this early, "rougher" version.
@cinematic35 Mike never played guitar on any versions of this song (probably why he hated it so much) The riff and song were played by Louie Shelton from Boyce & Harts Band The Candy Store Prophets. According to Andrew Sandovals Book" Monkees Day to Day History" Tommy Boyce said They were at RCAs Hollywood studio in May of 1965 doing some recording, at the same time the Rolling Stones were there recording Satisfaction, and his inspiration came from the Keith Richards riff.
@@tonyspada2744 True. Louie Shelton played the lead guitar part on this song. There is even a video you can find here where he talks about his lead playing in this song.

@MechoMadness Sure, all it takes is one song and this is it. A fantastic love song, featuring Davy playing very capable acoustic rhythm guitar to a song that he penned. It may not be your cup of tea, but I think many would say this is a wonderful song (and that's coming from a Maiden fan!). It's been performed with several different guitar and sax solos throughout the years depending on his bandmates, bet rest assured that Davy has total control of this song and how it's performed.
Yup. This version is snarling, snotty garage rock. The kind of noise most boys who picked up guitars in the 60s made. The Monkees may not have been virtuoso musicians but the four insane boys weren't slouches either.
A better time......Time warp me back to when the brady's were young, I dream of jeanne was the hottest thing around, the Monkee's were topping the charts, The archies, Jose and the pussy cats were everybody's favorite...what an excellant time to be a kid, I wouldn t of missed it for the world
@rmp0012002 What I heard was they did "Headquarters" all by themselves, with a little help here and there from producer Chip Douglas. Then for "Pices,Aquaruis, Capricorn and Jones" (forever after) they played along with many studio musicians to balance things out. But don't quote me. ;)
Does anyone else notice the opening guitar lick sounds so much like Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)? Also, the chord structure is similar to Sympathy For The Devil.
Oh yes! When Davy arrived the U.S. the first time he was in the Ed Sullivan Show and this was the show the Beatles had their first apperance in the U.S.too.From this moment they where friends. There are many many stories of them together, one for example that they took drugs together in Hyde Park and did loose Mickey :)The Beatles never would have said that the Monkees weren't a real Band! On the evening Davy died Paul MC Cartney did a moment of silence for him in his own concert. What a sad day:(
This is actually from early 1967. In 1968, they played the 45 version of this song. This looks like the beach movie episode or Capt Crocodile. Same video.
