Welcome to the official UA-cam channel of The Monkees, home of 60s chart-topping hits “Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer” and “Daydream Believer,” as well as multi-platinum, #1 albums ‘The Monkees,’ ‘More of the Monkees,’ ‘Headquarters’ and ‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.’
Monkee-mania began in Los Angeles in 1965 when Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, the late Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones were cast in the eponymous television series about a struggling rock band inspired by The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. The quartet brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their resulting music. By the time the series aired its final episode on March 25, 1968, The Monkees had sold 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles. Few could have predicted the impact The Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.

Wow, they look so young. When I used to watch their show and buy their albums, I was a young kid and they looked so grown up to me. Now I'm getting old and they look like kids. They are all so adorable.
Haha I saw Mike and Micky perform recently and the first thing the lady next to me said was “Damn these guys are old.” Yeah what’s new? Haha
Mike & Micky have been making jokes forever about how long they’ve been performing. Mike said it’s gotten less funny now that they’re actually “old”. (But, they laughed!😆)
Back in 1966 they were young 🤣
@@sovietonion72 So was I! I turned 11 in June of that year. Watched the premiere of this series and Star Trek. Little could I imagine how important both shows would become over time.
they didnt even play their own instruments! (and your father is a male flight attendant!)
I randomly chose this episode to watch after hearing about Mike Nesmith's death. I love that it featured 2 of my favorite songs that he sang lead on. R.I.P. Mike. Thanks for the great music!
(He also wrote those songs! Good pick.)
Mary, Mary (from the tape recording) is Mike's song, too.
Prime Monkees! Sweet Young Thing, Papa Gene's Blues and Mary Mary!! Love you always, Mike.
I love those songs, too! In fact most of my favorite Monkees’ songs were written by Mike. May he, Davy and Peter rest in peace.
Mike was my favorite ❤
I think it's cute how you can hear Davy say Nesmith instead of Mike when he's entangled in the telephone window.
Nice profile picture!
@Queenie Casbela LOL gotta love George Parasol!
i LOVE your pfp!
Every teenage girl in America was glued to the TV when the Monkees came on. I was 12 and still know their songs by heart.
I benefitted from my older brother buying Monkees albums. He had "The Monkees' Greatest Hits," "More of the Monkees," "Headquarters" and a few more. I'm happy to say that I'm too young to remember the Monkees being on prime time television; I only saw the reruns.
This made my bad night better.
I can always count on this show to do that for me!
@@ursamajr so can I. They always find a way to cheer me up. One reason why I love them
That 12-string Gretsch that Mike Nesmith played here was custom made for show along with the bass that Peter plays. Mike kept it after the show was cancelled and continued to play it throughout his life, especially during the reunion shows 😊😊
That’s awesome! I was checking that guitar out while watching this episode! 🎸
Love the talk at the end about the Sunset Strip riots or demonstrations. The incidents inspired Stephen Stills to write "For What It's Worth" for his group Buffalo Springfield who were playing at the Whiskey A Go Go club on Sunset Strip at the time.
It also inspired Mike himself to write a poem that eventually became the song Daily Nightly sung by Mickey on the Pisces Aquarius album
Stephen Stills and Peter Tork were friends btw. They looked like twins
@@SandraWade666 Stills was the one who recommended Tork to the producers.
Scary I remember most of the words to all these great songs. All the episodes. Had alot of their albums, that makes me feel soooooo old and l am only in my sixties. Love it.
Not davy telling micky to shut up because he was scared 😂 love these guys
This interview is absolutely amazing. Very wise remarks coming from them all, showing lots of intelligence. Love it.
WOW I USED TO LOVE THE MONKEES WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. WOT A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE. I THINK I MIGHT OF BEEN ABOUT 3-4 WHEN IT WAS ON TV.
Chris Maginess - me too! My older sisters had their albums
I found it fascinating that the interview segment at the end was included in the first season. I would've pictured a subject that grown up to be included in Head
the first time I heard. sweet young thing. thanks
Hello friend 👋 💐
Detail looks amazing. I'd never been able to see before that the Martians have different-colored stockings!
The 4 Martians outfits were used in that circus episode...and i think that space alien episode with the freaky goggles....
@@barbkhan2323 And I think the bathing caps used by the Jolly Green Giants turn up in the 'Captain Crocodile' episode. Worn by The Monkees as their hit with pies.
@@itiswhatitaintanditaintwha1427 it's they're, not their.
Some people like the Beatles I love this band have since I was a child so happy I found this episode.
The Beatles are one of my all time favorites, next to Queen.
What a time to grow up with these precious guys
Hello friend 👋 🌹
As long as people have eyes and watch TV, the Monkees will live on. Making jokes and singing. In a way, they have achieved a form of immortality.
Davey is forever young here as they all are. And Nesmith is still alive just like Peter is.
So what else can you ask for? At least they will be remembered and as forever young and funny!
I used to enjoy watching this Show on Saturdays along with Cartoons. Then later I’d watch American Bandstand and Soul Train. Those were great Saturdays for Television!
👏🏻🎸😎
I am a70's kid, I recall watching them with the Banana Splits. My fa.Ily watched Bandstand a d Soul Train on Saturdays too. Then we either relaxed, went on an outing or I did my homework. Fun memories.
Watch few of Monkees Tv show back 1974-1975 After school. Always love beginning sound tracks. Great song
The quality is surprisingly good.
I agree, it looks fantastic. It was either restored or preserved really well. Plus, shows shot on film always look better than ones recorded on videotape.
These shows aired 10 years before I was born but they were a staple of my childhood Sunday mornings.
R.I.P. Davy Jones and Peter Tork. It's not the same with out you☹️
And now Peter is gone :(
@@SandraWade666
And now Mike...
@@SandraWade666 You Mean Mike Nesmith?
I thought Clark Kent getting impatient waiting for The Monkees to leave the phone booth was funny and Superman nearly failing with frustration to get out.
Yes, that and the hopelessly incompetent detective who couldn't find anything in his own office!
Mikey Dolenz - "there haven't really been riots, they've been, in actuality, since i was there, there've been demonstrations. a lot of people, journalists, don't know how to spell demonstrations, so they use the word riot cause it only has four letters" damn.
My favorite quote 💬💭❣️of the end interview segment .🤔🤨😆😆💛.. 😄😄😄😄😄😂🤣😂🤣😏🙄 ...👍👍.🍀.🌻✌️
🤞🖖. ✝️☯️🛐 . 💪🤳.
It's easier and saves more space in any news columns to use shorter words in place of more appropriate words instead. Plus, "riot" sounds more sensationalist, even though it isn't as such. The media lives for sensationalism, unfortunately.
@@gokaury the point here is that they are trying to make the protestors sound more violent by using the word "riot". This technique is still used by right wing news media to turn public sentiment against the protestors. It is still happening today. Micky and the guys were aware of it then and young people today will tell you the same.
I love Peter❤👍🏽....
And Davey Jones was JUST TOO CUTE❤
Oh I was A huge Peter Fan, back in the day. Well more like crush.
I never noticed how Peter wore his belt till today. 😛😇😁
As a kid I absolutely loved this show 😂
Brings back the memories... ☺
I didn't know I was watching re-runs when I watched them, I thought they were fun. I still think they are fun.
I can't wait to watch them perform on Sunday
they're like a human version of The Banana Splits !
And better fake musicians, too!
I loved this series!!! It could be really funny.....And at the age of four, I think I was in love with Dave.....Don't tell my husband!!!
I started watching it when I was 4, too! Peter was my 😍
If you were a girl in the 60s who was smitten with any of the Monkees, that only proved you were heterosexual. I think all of us were at some point! They were all charming but my choice would be Peter.
"Podcast Valley Sunday" does an excellent breakdown of this episode, especially the interview at the end. Check it out!
R.I.P Davy, Peter and Mike.
I can't believe Michael Nesmith birthday was December 30th 1942. In my anniversary is December 30th 1985. Meet Mike and Davy and Peter rest in peace
I can't believe Michael Nesmith birthday was on December 30, 1942. And my Anniversary at Jewel-Osco Is December 30,1985. Rest in Peace 🙏😇 Mike Davey 🙏😇 And Peter 🙏😇 you brought a lot Whit and Dry humor. So my friends Mike Nesmith Davey Jones and Peter York until we meet again in heaven.
Davy's birthday was also December 30th. (1945)
4:35 NBC Studios in Burbank as they looked in 1966, a nice bit of tv history
So charming and fun
Thinking back about how much grief they got and thinking about how much the entertainment industry does exactly the same thing these days really makes me think these guys got a raw deal ....
I'm still waiting for the Monkees to come to my town.
James Forbes - Were you in so. CA in 1989, when they got their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? I was, but I had to
go far, FAR over there, early in the morning, traveling on buses
to see them; they are certainly not going to come to see me.
Davy wearing shoes with his pajamas.
These guys are pretty good. They should form a group!
In heaven
TV was great back in the day... didn't have to worry about 'agendas' or politics. No nudes or other 'racey' topics. Just good clean family entertainment. Could sit down and watch with your kids and not worry if you would have to cover their eyes or plug their ears. Loved the Monkees and their music.
Hey! Great to se Carl Ballantine (Bensen) from McHale's Navy. 💫
21:12 Davy: Peter? Hey Peter?
21:15 Mike Turns Back
21:18 Mike: He’s Gone!
21:21 Micky and Davy: He’s Gone?
I like Mike's flinching when Peter hiccups!
same lol
The Monkeys were good and funny. The recording agent was a real dork.
Fun memories
We're always "a believer" when we audition for the "out of this world" TV producer of producers. Especially out of our unpredictability themed fellow music groups.. Stay safe everyone!
My favorite song was how old did you say your sister was because my sister plays it on my birthday and all the other songs that the Monkees songs are my favorite songs
Hello friend 👋 🌹
Went to the dentist office today and my dentist was singing The monkey song and I start singing that we started laughing he was like you're a young how do you know about that I'm 45 years old I used to watch this all the time.Doc
3:52 Say, that Mr. Benson reminds of McHale's Navy...
The journalists don’t know how to spell demonstrations so they just say riots….priceless …articulate intelligent young men 🥰
My mom and I use to watch the show. It was cool then and still is. I , I remember it in the 70,s. I was 12. It's a fun show .stil is. My sister talked about Mike Nesmith,s death. Rip Davy, Peter, and Mike. Hey. Micky
I love the monkees their so funny ☺️💞

Same exact story I'm also 11
Look at Pete's groovy paisley shirt.....
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME WATCHING THE MONKEES
Mr. Bensen sounds like Larry David doing George Steinbrenner on Seinfeld
End of Program 22:00 Journalist can't spell Demonstration so they spell RIOT Instead. Wow! 😁
I was in love with Peter, then Davy, then Mike. Sorry Micky. 💖
I was in love with Davey, then Mickey, then Peter, then Mike.
Peter was cutest to me. Davy looked too perfect, LOL.
But Micky could do the best characters and impressions, and had excellent comedic timing.
I love the part where the Monkees are trying to adision for benson and they play in the phone booth playing "Sweet young thing".😀😀😀🎶🎶🎵
Miss Chomsky is quite the secretary.
I posted this on Facebook, and now I post it here:
Here's hoping you put out rejuvenated regular DVD season sets of _The Monkees_ using these new masters (and with not as many extras) for retail. Y'know, just like they did the complete _Batman_ 1966 television series... :^)
There were some dumb ass tv show in the 1960s. But as a kid growing up I enjoyed them thoroughly. Innocent. The Monkees are underrated y I find them awesome to listen to. I felt they covered several genres to pleasantly entertain all. I recall them live. I seen all, but Mike, play free of charge at the Boston hatshell.
Seriously thought I was going to marry Davy Jones.❤😂❤
Back then, the media called demonstrations 'riots'.....today they call riots 'demonstrations'....lol
Who would have ever thought that this episode is the actual plot to the Kevin Costner thriller "No Way Out"
4:20 ole lol
When Micky mentions the Sheriff of LA I think he means Peter Pitchness.
i remember telling my kids to grow their hair and turn their music up1
wow Mickey was right on! they were NOT riot they were demonstrations ... ppl don't know how to spell it so they use the word riot cuz it only has 4 letters...
And to think Gruber started out in the McHales Navy?
Dang Peter's sitting in the back of the Monkee Mobile at the 20:50 mark cussing. 😆
The dummy sitting at the table at 14:00 looks a bit like Elton John.
OMG Reptilicus!!!!
They were seriously funny.

First time I saw the monkeys I was 7. I thought Peter was the best
Did she really say "discotheques"? Lol nice. RIP Michael Nesmith
Davy was I my favorite so sad rest in peace
This was the first episode I ever watched 3 weeks ago and I didn’t knew what I was getting into. Now 3 weeks later I’m watching the last 2 episodes of a truly great and fun show that kept me laughing. Im 18 and this show grew to be one of my favourites immediately. Thanks for such a fun show from a new Monkees fan
I'm 62 and I loved this show as a little girl. I loved Davy and Mickey and had huge crushes on both. I'm always excited when the younger generation love classics from my generation
@raedroid1703 You're probably in your 50's
@@r3tr0actiongamer24 I’m actually 18. I mentioned in my original comment
@@raedroid1703 You can type whatever age you want, I'm just saying I'll be anything you're in your 50's
The sad thing about the end of traditional television is zoomers weren’t raised on re-runs like 80s kids were. But at least a lot is available online if you can find it. Most paid streaming platforms don’t even seem to feature these old shows. It’s like a purposeful disconnect from the continuity with the past. They don’t want people to know America was mostly white and sexual degeneracy isn’t normal.
"It's not fair. We're as bad as any other group in town"
Is my favourite monkee joke ever!!!
Hello friend 👋 🌹
You'll never be as good as HERMAN'S HERMITS.
The interview in the end was great. *“It doesn’t matter what I say, nobody listen to me because I’m not 21.”* Big truth, Davy.
The wealth came from Mike nesmeth.
The Monkees in HD. Now I know, God is real.
Sweet!
Actually it's Full HD
The interview at the end should leave no doubt that they were not dumb kids but actually highly intelligent and well spoken men.
I agree that the interview gave the impression that the Monkees were more intelligent than they were given credit for. Yet if history serves me correctly, they were limited regarding what they were allowed to discuss. Recently, I learned that "Last Train to Clarksville" was an anti-Vietnam war protest song. Bobby Hart confirmed this. In writing the song, he and Tommy Boyce had to be subtle in writing it. Only because Bobby mentioned it, I listened for hints--as he mentioned, they were subtle.
@@glamgal7106 I am recently discovering this group and all their songs and shows (thanks youtube!!!!) and I see how hard was to live in the ´60s for a young person. They are the generation of the change and they have all my respect due to that. I don´t know what the problem was with them in those days, that they were fake I read. I don´t know why they say that. David can sing very well, I heard Daydrieam believer and it is a great song.
Micky was in college when he tried out for the Monkees
@@glamgal7106 Less subtle is the song Daily Nightly that Nez wrote which is a direct comment on the demonstrations the guys were talking about. It's a fantastic tune! For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield was about the same subject but is often interpreted as a Vietnam protest song
Micky once said that it was a mistake to play characters with the same names as them. If he could do it over, his credit would have read "Micky Dolenz as Jerry."
How far we've come when THAT is considered to be "long hair".
To borrow a quote from an ad(I think it was Virginia Slims), we've obviously gone a long way hair-wise.
Ironically in these days THAT is actually considered long hair. What happens to men? they take it almost bold.
It´s pretty long by todays standards.
I didn't realize that it was far back as the 60s that people started saying "like" every half sentence.
Yeah that's been going on like forever
Really! I always thought it was a new thing also. That's weird how we notice things like that.
Hey, like, _man!_ - Weren't hippies well known for saying that?
Like, what are you talking about ?
Literally has replaced like
This show is 10 times as funny 50 years later
Yes,and I've observed in other episodes that not much has changed in the way of politics and the medical system. Still pertinent today.
Better than anything that's on TV today.
22:00 The interview at the end blew my mind, and also made me somewhat depressed, that 50+ years later we're still facing the exact same issues they were trying to address back then :/
The issues today are the communist democrats trying to destroy and take over America, as when they stole the presidential election in 2020.
The communist democrats can't survive without chaos, violence and division.
LIBERALS
@@monkeeman1966 Get help.

I think Peter was responding to when Hubble Benson said "eureka!" (sounds like 'you're Reka'). No, we're Americans. ;)
