Their music lives on and brings you back to a kid. So uplifting. I had to share my feelings. Anyone else here b/c they heard those commercials?
god she was beautiful. I was born in 57. Growing up and being exposed to these songs had effects that are hard to explain. Hope, optimism, beauty, worry free. Can you imagine having her over to your house just for company, a swim in the pool, a dine dinner, talk and relax back then?
One of her best friends growing up was the daughter of the man who was the number 1 suspect in the murder of the Black Dahlia. She was good friends with Sharon Tate. Mama Cass hung out Chuckie Manson and maybe they all did for all I know. They were selling a Californian dream but in truth, there was darkness all around them.
Ed Sullivan had the knack of harnessing the very best of musical talent back in the 1960s and this 1967 rendition is typical. This is such a classic, that it is difficult to comprehend that it was released a lifetime ago, topping the charts in 1965, when I was still a student in 4th year architecture at UNSW, but then it was the '60s, beginning the halcyon period for popular music and Humanity itself, with the boffins citing 1960-90 as the zenith period for our species, never to return, so make the most of all from that time. The Mamas & Papas were the supreme exponents of group harmony, and still lead a very competitive pack with the Beegees and Beachboys nipping at their heels, but a key line in their massive hit "Dedicated to the One I Love", (each time I pray for you my baby) still rates in my humble opinion as the epitome of perfect harmony in a wealth of purveyors in that three decade period that is poorly missing in century 21 music. Sadly their time ended with the untimely death of Cass Elliot in 1983, prompting the pundits to laconically say that if Mama Cass had given that sandwich to Karen Carpenter, they would both still be with us today. Be that as it may, we have the legacy of their audial creativity 57 years on from a time in the USA, when life was peaceful and mass gun violence was unheard of, and my lengthy double greyhound bus circuit time there in 1978 remains etched in my memory half a century on. Enjoy this & all the wonderful musical contributions of the Mamas & Papas.
.. It sounded like the girls mics were "on" .. I did hear Cass singing an extra note near the end of the song .. .. As for acts on Ed Sullivan, it was a mix between live singing and lip syncing .. For example, the Dave Clark Five always lip synced their performances, whereas The Beatles sang live .. it just depended on the performer ..
Sometimes the backup singers would pre-record a "live" track while the main singer would be live on a solo mic. It's hard to tell sometimes with these Sullivan performances. At 1:09 it looks like John is speaking about something as his lips do not match the words and it seems like you can almost hear him.

One of the greatest songs ever written. And i can't even tell you why. It just is.
Love how Michelle loses her microphone and ends the song singing into a banana
I loled
Classic! The banana mic.
LMAO
shes so high xD
A real banana Mic :D
California was such a wonderful place at one time.
Hippies
Wish I could go back 😥😥😥
Californication
When Michelle offers Cass a bit banana, Cass declines, then reassures Michelle. The two of them loved each other. Great friends.
@hognoxious You gross me out
I don’t think they did Michelle purposefully went with the man that cass like knowing she liked them 😶
@@vix5814 they were good friends.
@@craig3240: They did remain ‘friends’, sort of, until the end but it was well known among them and the general public that Mitchie was eating other bananas while married to John and that Cass made no secret that she was incredibly attracted to Denny and was not happy with the affair between him and Michelle.
@@rayray8687 yea the group was in sync on stage. Totally different off stage
I was 17 years old then. What great times those were thank you God for creating me when you did. Young people now have no idea how great it was back then.
It is probably pretty annoying for young people today when old people tell them how good things used to be... I believe the obvious question is who f-ed it up? If times changed for the worse during the prime of life, are not you to blame? Unless you are one of those folks that only enjoys being a Boomer when it is about a classic rock song or avoiding fighting in Vietnam or whatnot. Hey kids, it was this guy and his votes for snake-oil salesmen and actors to constantly give reaaaalllly rich people subsidies they do not need. But, my guess is Walt will blame, um hold on lemme check Fox News' chyron really quick, he will blame people from El Salvador this week. Next week, he will be assigning blame to my niece and nephew's Generation, and they are 6 and 3 years old, respectively. Boomerbuddy, look in the mirror. That is your answer. LOL. And tbh, I had a fuckin' rocking '90s childhood in Kentucky, man. But I don't quite get your point... just because I would play SNES or N64 on a rainy day, doesn't mean my childhood was ruined, right? Brother, I had fun you couldn't imagine, most of it outdoors in the gorgeous Bluegrass region of KY. So lovely. Also, I just re-read your comment. It is weird that you think G-d created you at a specific time or something so you could listen to the Mamas & The Papas. You should read the Bible, my friend. It ain't about you, dummy. I'm pretty sure you are not mentioned. Hold on, ummmmmm, flipping pages, nope. I do not see "@Walt222" in God's grand plan ha! Later HOMO (sapien).
forever jealous i was born in the wrong era 🥲
You missed a very fab time. @@hxm98
@@hxm98it‘s not the „wrong“ era, but gawd dayum the 60s must‘ve been awesome!
Every generation says this lol. Just enjoy right now, today
Director: “okay, y’all gotta lip sync over the track to make it look like you’re actually singing”
Michelle: “Imma eat this nanner”
Lol
I just split ribs reading this
You should check out some old Who videos like this and watch Keith Moon drumming. Hilarious.
hahah
first time I’ve heard anyone call a banana a nanner,I like it 👍
this performance is cass & michelle being iconic for different reasons i love it so much
I was always in love with Cass. She had a voice like an angel and a beautiful smile.
Wonderful group and song.
John Phillips looks very handsome and mesmerizing to me.
I agree!
I was born in the 80s and fall inlove with this song when my father plays this in my childhood ❤
I was in love with mama Cass from the first moment I heard her voice. She'd been dead for years when I first found her. It still breaks my heat to think she's not with us any more.
yeah its sad.. she was already overweight and prediabetic and died young at 33yrs of age...in UK especially where theres hardly any sunlight for Vitamin D, an essential vitamin we all need!
Right the true talent of the group. If she looked like Michelle she would have been a mega star
Michele has a timeless beauty. She looks like a girl straight out of a Miss Universe pageant.
Surely the most surreal pop performance ever seen on the Ed Sullivan Show!
California was so beautiful then. Especially SF in the early 80's.
how about know?
@@josepaz859 still nice. Just expensive af.
its a dump now
I wish todays music was still like this
Real love. Real music. Soul. Dripping pleasure. From such a once in a lifetime group. Cass. We. Wanted more from you. Rest. In music. Forever. !!!!
Hello Denise, How are you doing?
What a beautiful time, everything was so colourful, psychedelic and the music was great.
This song will never die
That second verse, the lyrics, the delivery … exquisite. Thank you Michelle.
Man this song was premiered on the Ed Sullivan show a day before my 4th birthday!😳wow! Love the tune!
I was born august ‘63, and I feel like I watched this performance live with my older sisters when I was just a little kid. I know my whole family watch Sullivan every week. So this song has been in my head pretty much my whole life.
If there was a public opinion poll for the best pop song in history, this song would get my vote.
Man, Michelle Phillips was impossibly beautiful back then.

What a friggin tune this is, never gets old and the most 60s set and look there is, love it
Mama Cass, like always, being the main character and the best singer. What a queen.
True but Michelle is the main character here, Come on😅
@@melvinjooh no mama cass has the most powerful voice in the whole group
There are very few songs that represent an era in time. This is one of them. They were absolutely fantastic.
Love it, would've loved if the dudes started singing the lady's lines and vice versa
Wow..you can hear Cass..what a powerhouse..really like her gown too
What a superb way to protest. Now I love The Mamas and The Papas even more.
My favorite group of all time. Their harmonies were terrific.
Hello Susan, How are you doing?
Mama Cass was part of my childhood. It's cool how new commercials are playing her songs. The marketing guys know how to perk up baby boomers. I heard "u gotta go where u want to go" & "Make Your Own Kind of Music" & I immediately came here to see who sang it. 1966 & 1969 - Mama Cass, I Was 7. Their music lives on and brings you back to a kid. So uplifting. I had to share my feelings. Anyone else here b/c they heard those commercials?

Love the Bright colored outfits and the lovely voices which brought meaning to our lives! Enjoy March 20, 2021....Spring is Here! Peace ✌️ ♥️
god she was beautiful.
Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed reading that. I love hearing the perspectives from people that actually lived through those days.
@@PapaAlec Hello 👋 I need someone who can work from home direct deposit weekly or monthly text me if you're interested
Cass Elliot fallecio en 1974 y para ese entonces ya se habian separado porque su musica habia pasado de moda...
For some reason this song makes me feel nostalgic for a time period that I wasn’t even alive in.
0:48 that “well I got down” clearly came thru

He really got down on those knees!
Vocal was live with a backing track for the music. You can definitely hear Cass Elliott coming through. What a powerhouse with her voice!
They would not allow live performances on the show ….
So the band had fun with it.
Incomparable la vos de mamá Cass, hermosa vos
I was born in 1966 and i’ve always been in love with this song and The Beatles Hey Jude. Perfect childhood
I can relate to that, I´m from 1963, great memories!
Momma Cass made their distinctive sound. RIP Ms. Elliot.
The mamas and Pappas were a group who could really harmonize well miss this group from the 60s great music growing up
I had the joy of growing up with music of the 60's. Damn but I feel old..............
Are they supposed to be lip syncing. I like how one of them just eats a banana.
It’s really strange. It’s got to lip syncing as some barely use their mics. Thinking that was pretty standard for singers on these older shows.
They were probably stoned
@@paulknight9998 that what I think
Sometimes the backup singers would pre-record a "live" track while the main singer would be live on a solo mic. It's hard to tell sometimes with these Sullivan performances. At 1:09 it looks like John is speaking about something as his lips do not match the words and it seems like you can almost hear him.
This performance is the most groovy thing ever. I love the Mamas and the Papas.
I am a heavy metal fan but I feel this is one of the best songs ever. Chills every time 🩷💜
Fantastic! I hope new generations will embrace this sublime music.

this is hysterical. I like how Michelle apparently lost her mic and is singing into the banana at the end. also the part where John is clearly talking to her regardless of the recorded song continuing to play.
I'm so STOKED to find a video with Michelle performing BAREFOOT! ❤💙💜 ❤💙💜
The tension in this performance is palpable.
One of their best songs, the harmonies their voices make are fantastic, and very nice to hear.
