I met The Mamas & the Papas one week after they displace The Beatles who had occupied the number one hit song in the United States for six consecutive months before The Mamas & the Papas move them out with California Dreaming! They were at a New York City Hotel and one of my friends in the college in Connecticut was friends with several of the people around The Mamas & the Papas. We drove down from Connecticut and there were about a dozen people in a line to greet The Mamas & the Papas. The first member out was John and I said congratulations upon your career. It appeared as so he was looking at my aura over my head. He then went on and Michelle came on. I repeated the congratulations on your career and she looked at me with amazement in her eyes as to how her life had changed. Then came Denny. Next came Cass. She looked marvelous in a white sweater and must have lost close to a hundred pounds! But my attention was diverted as I said hi cass, as I had to look down and away and I heard her disappointment in losing my attention has she sounded like a little girl who was denied something. Later on I was at Denny's house and it was not a good house for him. He was not happy and the house was a traditional Beverly Hills High ceiling house with one small colored glass window. He needed lightness and brightness. I could not help him and left soon after. Joel boyes Hot Springs Northern California.

David Crosby said in an interview that Cass was kind, generous and like a mama to everyone. Back in the day when everyone was starting out and living hand to mouth, Cass was the one who had a few dollars to spare to help someone out. She let people sleep on her sofa, she made sure no one was going hungry. You could tell he loved her.

Cass Elliot had a very strong, unique voice. A very talented singer, she stood out. It's a shame she died so young. I know her daughter was very proud of her. RIP Cass.
@Amy P, Yes Cass Elliot was a real talented singer, and a wonderful person as well... I really liked her song 'Make Your Own Kind of Music' , which came out after the group split-up and went their seperate ways... We definitely lost Cass Elliott much too soon...
She blew the other three right off of that stage with magnificent plus gorgeous voice of hers! In later interviews you can see and hear the jealousy Michelle Philips had for her. She never talked about her voice, only her weight.
'Funny, the song that always got me hooked when I was a kid? Songs like Cass Elliot's voice was "Words of Love" ( I can no longer remember what was on the other side of the 45), but the richness of her voice in that song stole my heart and I knew she was a maestro (technically "maestra"?) I can still sing"Monday, Monday" with friends that wanna sing harmony, but it is ALWAYS Cass Elliot's vocals in that song that make the rafters shake.
Cass had the purest, crystalline, most angelic voice I have ever heard. It's terribly sad that groups like this who give millions so much pleasure seem to eventually fall victim to personal and physical problems. They were a fond part of my formative years which will stay with me forever.
Cass had an amazing voice. But the purest, crystalline, most angelic voice I have ever heard belongs to Judith Durham of the Seekers: ua-cam.com/video/wZf41UudAbI/v-deo.html
Cass was by far one of the most talented singers of her time. Her voice could charm the birds from the trees. We missed a lot from her following her untimely death. Godspeed dear lady..your voice was phenomenal.
@@noneofyourbusiness9369 - Yeah, it’s okay to say someone that drinks a fifth of bourbon a day and dies of cirrhosis drank himself to death, but when a 5’5” tall woman that weighted 300 lbs. at some points in her life dies of heart failure, it’s trolling to say she ate herself to death. Nice try, moron ...
I believe Cass Elliot was the most "genuine" or "sincere" person of the four. She was ridiculed and mocked because of her weight, which is a shame for sure. But it was not her physical presence that made her awesome, it was her personality and her character. She never gave up on her dream, even in the face of adversity. She was unique and very much one of a kind.
I totally agree! I wasn't born until 1969, yet as a child I grew up listening to their first album. I've loved Mamma Cass since and somehow feel a kind of efinity with her. Strange that!
I met Cass while we both waited to be called at a hospital. I was just a young child but knew who she was. The wait was long, she entertained me and let me sit in her lap as she cuddled me. Thinking now that was about a year before she passed. Will never be a voice like hers again.
My favourite is "make your own kind of music", it has never aged and still sounds so fresh, oddly enough, I always think what a great Mamas and Papas song that would have been but Cass really nailed it, what a voice she had.
My absolute favorite. I was shocked to find out it was first recorded in 1931 by Ozzie Nelson. I’ve since listen to it by many artists. It’s such a beautiful song, but no one saying it better than Cass Elliot.
" California dreaming" instantly takes me back to the 60s,especially if I am in Tenerife in winter, thousands of miles from the cold and dark of the UK in winter, and I am watching the surfing at Las Americas where VW Camper Vans are still popular with surfers.
I still say in my opinion Cass was and still is one of the most beautiful celebrities ever. My heart melts every time I watch the video of dream a little dream of me.
1965. My first year in the Canadian Air Force, and I was only 17. California Dreamin' still brings back the memories of my youth and the hopes of having a life they sang about. I am 73 now. I loved them so much and the hopeful times they represented that I can still play that song in my mind. Those were the days my friend. I thought they'd never end... God Bless America. RS, Maj Ret, Alberta, Canada.
I was 13, and pretty sure I caught California Dreaming first, and had their first album in mono. 1965 was the perfect year to start listening to music, yes!
My favourite in the band was Cass Elliot. She seems like the most genuine as many others also has written in the comments. She seemed like a nice person, with the biggest heart. People we're very cruel. She had a great voice and a great look. She was one of a kind. I like her moves and her dance. Just look at "Dancing in the street"! She had so much talent, more than the rest of the group put together. Rest in peace you beautiful woman. My favorite songs in "Monday monday", "California dreamin" and "Creaque alley", and their version of "Dancing in the street"! I also like her solo songs, "Dream a little dream on me"! Take a look at Cass and Sammy Davis Jr then they singing "I dig rock n roll music". That's also very good!
My oldest sister met the group at a club in Detroit. I was a star-struck child and she got Denny to sign a cloth napkin for me. He wrote, "The price of coal is down, Debbie, and you have a very nice sister." I still have it!!
Momma Cass had one of the most awesome voices and wow could she sing . I till this day still enjoy listening to the mama;s and the Papa"s takes me back to my childhood filled with good memories . And Cass and her Solos were above awesome . They were the best.
Cass Elliot was a natural Alto voice and could also even sing some Baritone parts. Altos do stand out because they are rare. But to me, her real gift was singing harmony. I think she could harmonize with ANYONE.
Cass Elliot was always my favorite. She was also responsible for bringing together Crosby, Stills & Nash. She was a great talent and I was truly heartbroken when she passed away.
I fell in love with my wife listening to them while in high school, listening to their music today we relive our teenage years, handsdown our favorite group.
Everytime i hear the Song California Dreaming I cry out loud as a over 50 year old man. They were the best band in these days-it was a gift. The Mamas and The Papas have made my childhood with other bands.
Being a Californian my entire life, I’ve always been partial to California Dreamin’…but “Monday Monday” stops me in my tracks and brings back very fond ‘60s memories. Shoot, they’re all great songs..
Those were their 2 biggest hits, so they were played often on the radio. Don't get me wrong, I love those 2 songs, but to me anyway, my favourite song was Dedicated to the One I love
Whenever i am feeling down in the dumps, i just listen to this wonderful group's beautiful sounds and i suddenly feel better! Rest in peace, Cass, John @ Denny and thank you and also thank you to the gorgeous looking Michelle, for giving us all of your lovely harmonies! . xxxx
'56 boomer generation here. The Mamas and the Papas were just one of the many iconic bands of the 60s that I grew up listening to during my wonder years.....✌
George B ~Another '56 (British) Boomer here... in the' 60s/70's in England one could literally breathe the atmosphere that the music gave you... 🎶✌️Let The Beat Go On Groovers!
I have a question - I wasn't born yet for the 60's, but listening to music of the era, I wondered if Spanky And His Gang were a competing band to the Mamas/Papas? Which came first? Was it a trend to capture that harmony sound during that era, as bands tend to want to sound like another band(?)
Ok Boomer....(Just kidding). You guys really did live to see some amazing times and social changes that are still bearing fruit, even after all these years. And the music...holy hell, the music! Gen X here(1975), even from a very young age, California Dreamin' has been my favorite song. Up through the '80s and Metal, past the '90s and Grunge, I always come back to this song and this time. It's almost a spiritual thing for me at this point, in that it makes me miss a era that wasn't even alive to see.
@@RacerXGTO Spanky & Our Gang had very similar styles & harmonies to their music, hard to tell who emulated who, both were great groups, think the Mamas & Papas had a longer life span though

But hey, welcome to the club! You definitely have taste sir! ✌☺
To me, California Dreaming is my favorite song from them and really is the only song of theirs I still like to listen to. There’s something about it that seems timeless from the instrumental parts to the harmonies , the simple lyrics and Denny’s amazing lead. It is a song I seek out to listen too sometimes…
I was a teenager in the 60's when those songs first came out. I look at teenagers today, and it just shows how lucky I was in comparison. We had a free country, great music, and everyone born in the decades after, missed out on ALL of it. A greatness our country has been far from for decades.
I was a kid in the 60's but I agree completely. Young people today have no idea what a fantastic place this country was back in the day. I am not on a downer with this - it's just the way things are.
I’m a teenager today and I totally feel like I missed out on the 60s. The worst part is that I live in the Bay Area and SF was practically the center of the hippie movement. What it must’ve been like to be 18 during the summer of love…
My family moved to Lemon Grove, CA near San Diego in 1966. Previously we had lived in Clarksville, TN for ten years. I fell in love with the laid back vibe of CA and the year round warm weather. When my father returned from Vietnam in 1967 he was transfered to Fort Benning, GA. Back to cold miserable winters. I will have to say my favorite singer of the group is Mama Cass. California dreaming did become a reality for me. Forty six years later I still miss the California mild weather and the laid back attitude of my dear friends! Everytime I hear California Dreaming on my car radio, I am transported back to 1967 and it feels goooood!! Darrell from Ozark, Alabama.
I was born in 1968. I remember hearing the Mamas and the Papas on the radio as a kid quite often and I also remember watching Cass perform on several shows but one that sticks out in my mind was of her singing with John Denver. All I can say is WOW!! She had such power in her voice that you had to stop and listen. I think it is so sad that people judged her because of her weight. She was lovely. Her talent was amazing. I still love listening to them even now. It reminds me of a much better time.
John Denver looked like he was afraid of her. A really good one was Cass on the John Davidson show. They sit and sing together while he has his arms around her. He doesn't seem to have any "fat-fear" compared to others.
@@anotherjoshua Yep, it was a combination of all four that hit gold. Just like a lot of groups. She didn't look that great alone on camera, but her " the good times are comin' " was a diamond .
I loved Cass. People can be so cruel. Cass had a powerful, beautiful voice. I was so sad when she died. Still love their music and her voice stands out above them all. 12:30 is still one of my favorites
I think she was a better person too. I saw an interview and Michelle was quite cruel toward her step daughter I thought. Beauty isn't always on the outside. Either way they were a great and talented band.
I love 12:30 and, along with California Dreamin, are my two favorites. I enjoy watching the video reactions from young people that hear them for the first time.
this group, together for such a short time, and "handicapped by substance abuse", and internal conflicts, made some of the most beautiful music I remember from the 1960's, of which many of their songs are now classics. Philips might've have sunken into degeneracy with his own daughter, which was inexcusable, if it's true, but he wrote some of the very best most beautiful songs of the 1960's. Every time I hear California Dreamin', 12:30, Monday Monday, Go Where You Wanna' Go, I saw Her Again, in fact mostly all of their songs, I just have to stop and listen, and their songs take me back to a younger, happier, more innocent, and the less burdened time of my youth.
Always loved the Mamas & the Papas ever since I first heard California Dreamin' on the radio in the bleak UK winter of 1966. At that time going to California WAS the dream for many English teens, but flying there in those days was prohibitively expensive & not a realistic option for your average permanently broke teenager! The extraordinary emotional clout that song carries resonates to this day, and still fills me with a yearning for California! My other favourite song of theirs is Creeque Alley, a wonderful piece of 'storytelling songwriting' full of fun & whimsy that I never tire of hearing.
I love listening to "California dreaming" in Tenerife, watching the surfing at Las Americas, far from the cold and dark of the UK, for me, it's the quintessential 60s song and I usually listen to it three or four times in secession even after all these years.
I am 77 and was in my early 20’s and just married when their unbelievable harmony separated them from all other groups (mostly the English Invasion) of that time. Even my dear Mother who loved Glenn Miller and the 40’s Big Band era appreciated their unique harmony. Great Sound too short (as is life)!
You're so right. Born in '57 I loved the Beatles, Mamas and the Papas, Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel and so more wonderful music then! It's all in my 200 record albums which I will always keep with me. So sad, though, that any of them had to die so young, especially Naomi Cohen/Mama Cass. She Was the best!!!

I was just in elementary school; but my older sister (10 years older) always listened to the Mamas and the Papas. Cass lead that band. Her vocals were similar to Streisand and Midler. She should have been given top billing and she is sorely missed. Edit: Had it been a different era; weight wouldn't be an issue and she would be a super-star. My condolences to her daughter; you had a wonderfully talented mother like no other.
Im not from that generation, I was born in 66. I just found out it that wasn’t even their song! I was listening to my favorite oldies channel and I heard an older version.
For me Cass stands out from all 4. I love tracking her unique voice while listening to their harmonies. Without her the M&P songs wouldn't have been so catchy.
I wasn't born until '76, but I enjoy "California Dreamin'" the best. I love that song because it puts me in the mind of taking a brisk walk with leaves crunching beneath my feet (one of my favorite parts of fall and winter). It just transports me, however briefly, to a moment in time that I never lived in.
I prefer to remember them for their wonderful music rather than all the negative things you brought up. I remember sitting in the barracks in 1966 and listening to Monday Monday. Good memories. Mama Cass was great!

It was disappointing to hear of the problems that the group experienced from internal issues, especially the daughter of John Philips, Makensie Philips... Thanks for the memories and this great video!!!
I just turned 69 not long ago and their music was popular when I was in high school. Each of the great harmonies of their songs seems to remind me of a time and place. In my book they will go down as one of the best folk rock groups of all time. Denny wrote just dynamite musical compositions. From time to time I catch myself whistling one of their tunes to this day!
OMG, Michelle Phillips. What a goddess. I always liked their music but realised later in life that I absolutely loved it. California Dreaming is a masterpiece and written on a cold day in NY while John and Michelle took a stroll. Amazing! This awesome foursome sums up my teenage years and brings back so many happy memories.
That's not what Papa John said. He said he thought of the song and woke up Michelle to write it down for her, as she grumbled about being woken up. But he gave her half of the songwriting credits which no doubt made her a lot of money for a few minutes of dictation.

Denny had the best voice

Cass had an amazing voice. But the purest, crystalline, most angelic voice I have ever heard belongs to Judith Durham of the Seekers: ua-cam.com/video/wZf41UudAbI/v-deo.html
Cass was by far one of the most talented singers of her time. Her voice could charm the birds from the trees. We missed a lot from her following her untimely death. Godspeed dear lady..your voice was phenomenal.

She had the best voice of the group. From Ms. Harper Stacey.

They were the embodiment of the 60s in many ways. You can hear the decade in their harmonies.
I met Cass while we both waited to be called at a hospital. I was just a young child but knew who she was.
The wait was long, she entertained me and let me sit in her lap as she cuddled me. Thinking now that was about a year before she passed. Will never be a voice like hers again.
What a wonderful, wonderful memory to cherish. I'm quite jealous! 🙂
Interesting. In my minds eye, that is exactly how I thought she would be in person. I still listen to some of her work now and then.
" dream a little dream of me"... I loved Cass singing that. She had a very beautiful voice.

You're absolutely right. She was wonderful.
😊 Du har så rätt. Hon var otroligt begåvad.
Cass was an amazing singer and a sweet soul. She could teach the rest of the band a thing or two about how to really sing.

She was genuine, kind and selfless.
They were magic! But it was like a comet. A flash across the sky, and then gone....
My oldest sister met the group at a club in Detroit. I was a star-struck child and she got Denny to sign a cloth napkin for me. He wrote, "The price of coal is down, Debbie, and you have a very nice sister." I still have it!!

I was a teenager in the 60's when those songs first came out. I look at teenagers today, and it just shows how lucky I was in comparison. We had a free country, great music, and everyone born in the decades after, missed out on ALL of it. A greatness our country has been far from for decades.

I will always have a special place in my heart for mama Cass, because she reminds me of my own mama. My mom is up there singing with her right now, and probably rolling a big fat one.❤😂
Papa John Phillips was an extraordinarily talented vocal arranger. Solid songwriter too. M&P's music still sounds good today.
California Dreamin' is a classic. Their best in my opinion. "Denny Doherty quizzed John(Re: Monday, Monday"), "You wrote a song about the day of the week?" Dreamin' just makes me stop and listen and think "wow". It sends chills through me.

I was still in my elementary years when I knew their songs then they became my favorite group esp Cass Elliot. She was so beautiful & a very good singer/ vocalist. I still listen to their songs until now. Oct 8,2021
I got into these when I was 15. Absolutely still love them today at 56. Their story fascinates me. Just so sad to know that 3 aren't with us now. I like to remember them as young. My favourite song is Twelve Thirty (young girls are coming to the canyon)
The music certainly stands on it's own, an additional component that you were not aware of was how the music was responsible for a major upheaval in our society, you had to be there to get that aspect. Love your choice of Twelve thirty, always one of my favorites ,too. .... "to say good morning, and really mean it....." excellent!
Me too
I loved this groups music. Still play it.
Love Mama Cass singing “New World Coming”! It spoke to the kind of hope and optimism we had growing up in those days.
Agreed, it was like a prayer for all altruistic hearts.
