A friend's father passed several years ago. Hearing "Taps" played be the Marine bugle brought tears to my eyes. That is the earliest sound one can imagine.
Played Taps many many times before during and after being in the Navy. I can tell you sometimes it can be tough. The kid suffers from a problem that you run into quiet often: not enough warmup, not enough practice playing Taps (who practices playing Taps?) and not what many players understand, after standing around for the time to come your warmed up lip tends to relax causing the first few notes to be weak and "fractured". As you say, cut him some slack, fairly good job.
Ron, you're welcome. As an old (79) Navy 24 year veteran I seem to be a committee of one pointing out the solemn honor of a 3-volley salute as opposed to the common misconception of a 21-gun salute that is merely a ceremonial acknowledgement of a head of state that in most cases has sacrificed little, if any, for their country. Keep the faith. God bless America.Chuck
And thank you for your service Ron. As you may have guessed the Doug Cricket moniker if fictitious. I'm actually Chuck in Maine. I was a submariner (bubblehead). We used to say there are only two kind of ships: submarines and targets and a "bird farm" (Navy lingo for a Carrier) was a great target!!. KTF, GBA. Chuck
does not matter whether boy scout nor formal! he has the heart for the fallen! take a look around our nation! we should be thankfull considering in schools across America they are longer allowed to say the pledge of allegiance because it migh offend someone because of the mention of god! sorry but I thought that is what we stood for freedom from religious persacussion.
I sounded taps many times when I was a kid. Sometimes better than others. I messed it up bad once when it was freezing cold. Either way I was trying to honor the fallen just like this kid is. On a side note.... the most "colorful" of those experiences was the time I waited for an hour or so with a group of salty Marines. Lol
What a honor for this fine young student, boy scout and musician from the school band program to be called on to perform excellent live taps in honor of a fallen Veteran. This is what it should be! The US Military should be ashamed of purposely sending a soldier or sailor in uniform out perform false, artificial taps recreated by a CD player concealed in the bell of a Bugle or Trumpet. These people are required to be a poser and pretend to be playing real taps. No one including the decision makers in the US Military have any idea of the hard work and time to perfect his skills it takes for a real musician like this young man to play REAL LIVE TAPS. What an insult to substitute the real thing for something so shameful I have to wonder if our Military brass may someday decide to replace a real grave stone for for a plastic one. Is it about saving money or giving true honor to our Veterans? Again My Thanks to this fine young man.

Daniel Bartlett, The Taps player is a boy scout volunteering to play so I will cut him a break since I couldn't do much better.
God. Imagine being a child and having to deal with the pressure of not screwing up for such an important event.
