    When you are a part of one of these funerals, it will never leave you. It rests deep inside of you. My father was buried in a military funeral, and I’m telling you, I can’t hear taps without automatically shutting it off or muting it. I have a shell casing from one of the 21 gun salute shots. I hold that so near and dear to me. God bless America! 🇺🇸

      @@gh0stcrz978 I pray to God that your grandfather is also held tight within his arms. The shell casing from my fathers funeral is definitely my most prized possession. I made a little box for it that also contains a rose petal from the spray on his casket. ❤️

    My grandfather was in the Air Force for 28 years and during that time he was in charge of a group that preformed military honors. After he passed it was the most bittersweet thing witnessing the honors being presented for him. I’ll never forget the feeling that came over me when they played taps. God Bless everyone that has served!

    My grandfather did bombing runs in WW2 on the Witchcraft B-24 bomber. It’s one of the last flying B-24s. His name is painted on the side. The funeral for him was such class as shown here, I’ll never forget it even though I was young. Each member of the military that was there to honor him felt like they were truly saddened by my grandfathers passing. The military members bond is so strong I appreciate them so much

    Ok folks. It is not a 21 gun salute. A 21 gun salute is only for the president or a head of state. It is three volleys to a departed comrade. It is a tradition that goes back the earliest days of gunpowder in military arms. Three volleys (and it can be any number of guns ) are fired over the grave of the departed comrade to scare any evil spirits out so the departed can rest in peace for eternity. When I have led the firing party we have always tried to fire over the grave. I recall one reburial of a number of troops where we had three platoons fire over the grave.

    As a Veteran of the Army and a member of the American Legion for over 40 years I have to correct you. That is not a 21 Gun Salute. It is a 3 Shot Volley. Every service member is entitled to a 3 Shot Volley. A 21 Gun Salute is 21 separate reports from a cannon and for the funeral of the President or certain times and ceremonies of the year. Thanks to your family member for their service.

    Folks its NOT a 21-gun salute.
    The proper terminology is THREE RIFLE VOLLEYS by an honor guard rifle squad composed of three to seven members.
    The 21-gun salute is ONLY accorded to the President of the United States.
    Some comments:
    (1) Today’s customary three volleys fired over a grave probably originated as far back as the Roman Empire. This custom is incorrectly referred to as a “21-gun-salute”
    (2) The three rifle volley consists of no less than three and no more than seven rifles firing three volleys in memory of the fallen. The original history comes from the Roman era that at the end of the day of battle when the field of battle was cleared, if the soldier removing the slain soldier knew the name of the soldier, then they would call his name three times into the night as a form of remembering their sacrifice.
    Typically three fired cartridges are placed into the folded flag prior to presentation to the next of kin; the cartridges signify "duty, honor, and sacrifice.”
    (3) In more recent times (Revolutionary & Civil Wars), at the end of the day’s battle, each side would pause to recover their fallen and wounded from the field of battle. When that duty was completed, each side would fire three volleys to signify: “We have cared for our fallen & wounded”. These days, at military funeral, its our nation’s way of announcing: “We, our nation, have cared for our fallen warrior.”
    = = = =
    Note, military honors: rifle volleys, sounding of TAPS and the folding & presentation of the flag, are only conferred to those who have served honorably. The honors are earned, NOT freely given.
    = = = =
    Yes, I participate in three to six military funerals each week as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders.

    I was a VFW honor guard commander here in Michigan and we had very few members and getting a detail together was hard at best.
    There were times that I would have to call the ceremony, play taps (we had an electronic one) shoot and present the flag to the widow (the funeral home was nice enough to fold the flag for us), it was rough, there were many times that I would have to have my children and wife fire but we got it done, W😮e would pick up the brass, wipe the carbon off it and put it in a velvet bag and give it to the family even if we had to dig around in the snow to find them.
    I gave it up because the Quartermaster was a dick and the post was filled with alcoholics, wasn't worth the emotional ride.

      @@griffenconner7100 That is correct. Let me add some history. During the Mexican American War there was a specific battle-The Battle of Chapultepec. It happened on 12/13 September 1847. Marine NCOs and officers suffered the majority of the casualties in that battle. The red stripe is called “The Blood Stripe”. The first line in The Marines’ Hymm, “From the Halls of Montezuma”, is from the Battle of Chapultepec.

    @lucid1578 2 роки тому +1

    I remember at the end of halo 3 the marines give a 21 gun salute to master chief (cause they think hes dead)
    they use the 3 round burst battle rifle and there is only 7 of them so they fire three times, thought it was cool how they kept it the accurate number of shots.
    Edit
    after finding it weird they didn't fire and doing a little research i found out that they dont really do 21 gun salutes that much anymore (lame imo, our boys deserve it) and a "21 gun salute" is a different from a "three volley military honors funeral"
    why the heck cant we give em a proper send off? we can spare the blanks

    • @Ryarios
      @Ryarios Рік тому

      You’re partially correct. A military gun salute is performed with artillery. In the military parlance, artillery are ‘guns’. What these people carry are rifles. A 21 gun salute is for heads of state. This salute is what’s known as a 3-volley salute. The number of riflemen in the rifle party is proscribed to be an odd number between 3 and 7. There is no significance to the number of riflemen in the party as it pertains to the ceremony as far as I know. I assume it’s more along the lines of the number of people available.
