  • Jazz Docu - Dinah Washington - Evil Gal Blues
    ........................................................
Dinah Washington was perhaps the best American blues singer of the 1940s, jazz singer of the 50s and pop singer of the early 60s, and has been called the female Ray Charles. Raised on gospel and blues in black Chicago, she had just crossed over into the white mainstream with songs like What a Difference a Day Makes and Mad About the Boy when she died at just 39. It was a life of excess - too many pills, parties, mink coats and husbands. In this film, her life and music are assessed by people who knew her well and singers who love her, such as Amy Winehouse.

I had dinner with Lionel Hampton once in the south of France back around '97. He said he went to Chicago and was looking for a singer, and the club owner said "well, i got a girl who works in the bathroom and whenever the band starts up she sings pretty good". Hamp said "send her round to my rehearsal tomorrow". She went and sang, and Hamp asked her what her name was. She said "Ruth Jones". Hamp said "How about if we call you Dinah Washington?". Hamp told me she responded "You can call me whatever you want, Mr. Hampton, as long as you put me in your band!".

One of the very few artists my granny asked me to buy a CD for, so Ms. Washington HAD to have made an impression! I love her music. What a voice. And I'm 2 generations removed. RIP, ma'am. Thank you.

My parents just love her records! I learned later that singer Esther Phillips was cared for by Diana! Esther sounded just like her! Esther talked about how she was influenced by Diana Washington! I was guitarist in a band of friends who backed Esther up for a few years

You just have to meet the right person. A church where she use to sing. She looked great as a blond. She was living like Elvis. That’s sad she was only with him a few minutes. It might of lasted. It’s a shame she still isn’t around. There’s life in her singing. She is so joyful❤

We used to go to a jazz club in Yonkers.
I heard some wild stories about her From people that knew her personally.
You didn’t want to upset her😡

She looks great as a blond! You only live once so why not experiment with any color. Wow 9 husbands. I can hardly handle one man. Wow! Mink toilet seat why not?! She was evil. I can’t hardly believe that. Great singer. So much oomph! So much feeling. So wonderful! She is wonderful. I love her singing anything. I never knew her personal life. I just loved all of her songs and singing. Wish I could have met her. I think she is great! Church must of been great. We have lost such great singers. It’s so sad all of them are passing away. I have never been to that kind of church. Sounds so up lifting. So beautiful. What a breathless singer. So moving. So loving. Boy that must of been exciting listening to them both sing. Sorry grandma. But she was so spectacular. She had such a gift. Grandma sounded like a typical grandma. Caring and sweet. I love Billie holiday is great too. 18. Wow. Started her career. That’s. Wonderful. Maybe she couldn’t afford anything else. Why were they so mean to blacks? I don’t get it. I have seen it. And I don’t put up with it from anybody. I am white and I have been accused of being against blacks and that is so wrong. I have respect for all people no matter who they are. And I have been unfairly judged. I try to be nice to everyone. Her singing is so much fun and risque’. She is so missed. I listen to her every day. She is not fat! Who said she was fat? She looks lovely. Men always cheat. They can sometimes be dogs. Dogs are even better. That’s right. They were not as good as her. She was thrown down stairs that’s horrible! That husband ought to be in jail. If you got it spend it. You can’t take it with you when you die. Queen of bling. Crown and fur. That’s great. The band sucked. Why didn’t they leave her alone. She didn’t look heavy. Diet. That’s all people think about. Just to look bone thin. Sounds like elvis diet. Why didn’t the band leave her alone? Pigs! She is so great. She just doesn’t realize how great she is. I think her voice is so lovely. Her voice is snappy like a party!it’s easy to sing along with her. Why did Amy whinehouse do drugs? She was a queen of jazz and blues. I like people like her. That’s called outspoken. My mom and I always loved people like that. Hookers have it hard. What away to live. Just hanging on. What a way to make a living. 200 pairs of shoes. I can see it. You have to dress great. She probably liked the attention. She was having fun. Romantic singing. Fire. And flame. She was magic. Whinehouse put her flame out! Drugs did her in. I hope was clean. She was mesmerizing when she sang. This bitter earth. What good is love
