I have Nancy Wilson to thank for introducing me to Dinah Washington. Unfortunately I never got to see Dinah perform but followed Nancy as often as I could. Great Singers.

When you ask people about jazz singers, they always say 'Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald' but what about Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan?!!! for me, 2, of the best singers of all time

Dinah Washington sung so many different styles that she practically took herself out of the Jazz world. See back then if you didn't strictly sing jazz and did What Dinah done, singing different styles, you were frowned upon by the old heads of Jazz so to speak.

I grew up listening to Dinah Washington. She was tops, number one in our house. My mother would be doing housework and singing Dinah Washinton songs. The memories are if they were yesterday, even though it was the late '50's.
We would be sitting on the couch as my mother would be mopping the floors singing Dinah Washington, imitating her voice to perfection. We were captivated. We'd clap. We knew all of Dinah Washington's songs. My father, aunts, and uncles were big on Dinah. (My paternal family was from Alabama, migrating to Chicago, living across the street from DuSable High School. My father being in Dinah's age category). Man, you just don't know!
"T.V. is the thing this year, oh yeah, t.v. is the thing this year. Radio was great, but now it's out of date, t.v. is the thing this year."

Dinah Washington is one of the best and most overlooked singers today. She became my favorite female singer in the 70's when I was a teen and played my father's "What a Difference a Day Makes" album. I went searching for more and found she had recorded a wealth of material. It has taken years, but I now own everything she recorded to my knowledge. Her life deserves a film. You can hear her influence on Aretha (she did a tribute album while at Columbia Records), Nancy Wilson, and Esther Phillips among many others. She was not kidding when she said she could sing anything. I love her!

Dinah Washington-“Destination Moon” (1962 Roulette) is sincerely dedicated to SpaceX, albeit going to international space station; still, the Queen could have been describing the Crew Dragon spacecraft way back then; have a safe and glorious flight! Thanks Mother for making me love the Queen, who you met at possibly her only San Diego, CA rare show appearance, the review article I was able to find online a few years ago, the Queen was so regal in the accompanying photo. Mother's vivid recollection of meeting Dinah, along with (3) other personal recollections from those seeing or working with the Queen, including a priceless story one told to me directly by the legendary Miss Shirley Horn, all being used as basis for proposed 16mm/Super 8 indie film project, "Dinah The Queen," being shot in 2 versions, 1st in Fujifilm color, 2nd in Tri-X black & white from the great Pro8mm film stocks (I owe you big time Phil!)---All The Dinah Washington & SpaceX Best, Andromeda International Records

Found myself revisiting Dinah today. It took me way back to my childhood in the early seventies. Daddy loved Dinah Washington, he would sit in his recliner and put her LP on the record player, and he would melt into her music. My favorites, “The Man That Got Away”, “Soulville”, “I Wanna Be Around”, “The Good Life”...to name a few. I’d dance on Daddy’s toes....those were the best times. When I listen to Dinah, he’s alive again, alive in my memories. I miss my Daddy, he was, for me, ICONIC.... RIH, Edward Clarence Fisher! I know that you, Bus, Mom(Grandmother) Mary, Mommy and Donna are singing and dancing in Heaven. Until we meet again...❤️❣️💕

We can speculate how people with education and talent had to be placed in a box, and seeing people with way less talent get to the top because of their white skin. I would be rude and a bitch too, because the worse thing you can do is to keep down someone with talent and good gifts.

Dinah Washington...did it her way...but...she suffered in comparison....to Billie...Ella...Sarah Vaughan..etc...still imo...she was just as incomparable as they were....

Why was the Chicago gospel church demolished and not rebuilt - it seems odd that there is just an empty space.
    Does anyone know?

That's ironic Amy was in this video when Amy in fact was Dinah in a past life . Listen to Dinah then listen to Amy winehouse it's the same thing just different tone

Maybe it's me, but when I want to hear a song, I expect to be able to have a way to pull it up with the title and artist. Can't do it. Bummer!!

I don't understand the Billie Holiday comparison. Billie Holiday vocally isn't anywhere as good as Dinah. Now her phasing is second to none but vocally, it had to feel like an insult to the likes Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah to be compared to that.

    • @bolder2009
      @bolder2009 4 роки тому +3

Sinatra and Ella acknowledged Billie's genius and influence. Its not just about the voice. Its the musicianship.

bolder2009 I can most definitely agree with that, hence the acknowledgement of her amazing phasing.

Lisa H No the one looking through the pics was her photographer. Just the guy walking through Chicago is her son. Her other son is not in this doc.

Correct. Two sons. Robert Grayson Jr and George Jenkins Jr, but both have passed. Her biopic is being told through their POV. You can get updates @thedinahwashington on Instagram

guess they don't plan to make a movie about her...she could sing but she was crude rude and a drunk..39 married 8-9 times nasty
..her sons were ripped off by the last husband when it came to the money, that is until a re-release of her music in the late 90's but still they got screwed then too. Why the Hell do people with money assumed the spouse will do right by the real family members? It never happens ever! Oh and then the owed back taxes that really ate up the estate money.....Pay your damn taxes and leave a will that includes your children!

swampmammytheone its not about what she looked like, you wouldn't say that about Louis Armstrong.....he wasn't much to ......... She had a gift, that's what matters.

Leverne Jones Where did I post about her looks? What the hell does Louis Armstrong have to do with anything I said? BTW I don't even like him....What matters is you learning how to read number one and number two learn to type. The Comment I made stating ( Not much to look at! ) was aimed at the link the person above sent me! Nothing was on the site it related to! Again please learn to read prior to jumping off a bridge and drowning in still water!
