I have Nancy Wilson to thank for introducing me to Dinah Washington. Unfortunately I never got to see Dinah perform but followed Nancy as often as I could. Great Singers.
When you ask people about jazz singers, they always say 'Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald' but what about Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan?!!! for me, 2, of the best singers of all time
Dinah Washington sung so many different styles that she practically took herself out of the Jazz world. See back then if you didn't strictly sing jazz and did What Dinah done, singing different styles, you were frowned upon by the old heads of Jazz so to speak.
So cool that my nice is related to Dinah! Dinah is her great grandmother. Robert Grayson is her grandfather💞I feel blessed to know the family. Such a beautiful voice!
Dinah was one of my mom's favorite Jazz vocalists. The knew each other from the neighborhood and The Club D'Lisa. Mom wanted to name me after her...dad wanted to name me something else. I ended up with a name after a song Lol Dinah is just awesome!!!!!
Dinah Washington is one of the best and most overlooked singers today. She became my favorite female singer in the 70's when I was a teen and played my father's "What a Difference a Day Makes" album. I went searching for more and found she had recorded a wealth of material. It has taken years, but I now own everything she recorded to my knowledge. Her life deserves a film. You can hear her influence on Aretha (she did a tribute album while at Columbia Records), Nancy Wilson, and Esther Phillips among many others. She was not kidding when she said she could sing anything. I love her!
This woman right here!!!! I love her she was amazing I’ve been a fan since I was 7 yrs old!!💕💕💕Rest in paradise Ms Dinah I still listen to your songs my fav two are teach me tonight and what a difference a day makes!
😘😘I heard that Queen Dinah was a DIVA back in the day!! I’ve always wanted to learn more about Dinah Washington! Thank you for making this documentary public. Jazz at its finest!! One of the greatest singers of All Time! Blessings 🎺🎼🎶
I just read her book, "Queen, the Life and Music of Dinah Washington". It is fantastic! Too bad she was obsessed with her weight and became addicted to speed which hastened her early death. What a shame, but oh, what a legacy she leaves.
I grew up listening to Dinah Washington. She was tops, number one in our house. My mother would be doing housework and singing Dinah Washinton songs. The memories are if they were yesterday, even though it was the late '50's. We would be sitting on the couch as my mother would be mopping the floors singing Dinah Washington, imitating her voice to perfection. We were captivated. We'd clap. We knew all of Dinah Washington's songs. My father, aunts, and uncles were big on Dinah. (My paternal family was from Alabama, migrating to Chicago, living across the street from DuSable High School. My father being in Dinah's age category). Man, you just don't know! "T.V. is the thing this year, oh yeah, t.v. is the thing this year. Radio was great, but now it's out of date, t.v. is the thing this year."
Dinah Washington-“Destination Moon” (1962 Roulette) is sincerely dedicated to SpaceX, albeit going to international space station; still, the Queen could have been describing the Crew Dragon spacecraft way back then; have a safe and glorious flight! Thanks Mother for making me love the Queen, who you met at possibly her only San Diego, CA rare show appearance, the review article I was able to find online a few years ago, the Queen was so regal in the accompanying photo. Mother's vivid recollection of meeting Dinah, along with (3) other personal recollections from those seeing or working with the Queen, including a priceless story one told to me directly by the legendary Miss Shirley Horn, all being used as basis for proposed 16mm/Super 8 indie film project, "Dinah The Queen," being shot in 2 versions, 1st in Fujifilm color, 2nd in Tri-X black & white from the great Pro8mm film stocks (I owe you big time Phil!)---All The Dinah Washington & SpaceX Best, Andromeda International Records
No need for AutoTune, clown clothes, and theatrics. (Sorry Lady Gaga). Dinah Washington had a gift and an art. Her voice was so right with every note. Never had to strain or contort. Dinah Washington was perfection.
Found myself revisiting Dinah today. It took me way back to my childhood in the early seventies. Daddy loved Dinah Washington, he would sit in his recliner and put her LP on the record player, and he would melt into her music. My favorites, “The Man That Got Away”, “Soulville”, “I Wanna Be Around”, “The Good Life”...to name a few. I’d dance on Daddy’s toes....those were the best times. When I listen to Dinah, he’s alive again, alive in my memories. I miss my Daddy, he was, for me, ICONIC.... RIH, Edward Clarence Fisher! I know that you, Bus, Mom(Grandmother) Mary, Mommy and Donna are singing and dancing in Heaven. Until we meet again...❤️❣️💕
Beautiful story, and may your father's memory always bring you much joy. Your retelling of life as it once was has brought a smile to my heart, dear Daddy's Girl. :)
Such an awesome talent , but such a sad life. I wish she had held on tighter to her gospel roots for strength and direction as only the Lord could provide.
I think her mom always knew that the worst thing that could happen to Dinah was to part ways with her church upbringing...and sadly her mother was right..
@@JazzFlop212 Perhaps "religion" is, but "spirituality' (YOU having YOUR OWN relationship with "the Lord") is not. I would GLADLY give my life in the name of MY LORD. Nothing religious about it. This woman should be played by Viola Davis. Both women are uniquely talented and s rare natural beauty. Aretha certainly was inspired by her fur lover girls they really were.
Thank you for posting. Love her music, funny how I placed flowers on her grave last year in October but until today; this is my first time seeing her in a motion film ... I’ve always seen pictures. Such a soothing voice, her music takes me to a special place.
Dinah's mother had several children very late in her life when Dinah was already a teenager or grown, so young that when Dinah became successfu she tried to adopt them, so the woman talking about her sister is her sister but about 15-20 years younger
Loretta Divine would have been superb as Dinah. I've noticed the resemblance and thought for some time and was hoping someone would've picked up on that fact and went to work on bringing this to fruition. Even now with a good makeup job Miss Divine could pull it off playing the one and magnificently only Dinah.

Is it fair to compare Dinah Washington to Mahalia Jackson? I wonder in what way they differ in voice and intention? Surely they both could be called the greatest Gospel singers of their time.

Don't forget Nina Simone, Classical Trained Pianist!!!!! Esther Phillips voice was not pretty but was a well known singer, as well!!!!
@@islandgirl5382 I believe Nina Simone has a daughter who can also sing and is part of a Daughters of Legends tour but struggle with funding.
Somehow Dinah always looks a little bit forgotten amongst other female singers. To me, she's one of the best.
Its because she was blessed with dark skin.
She’s easily one of the top 5 best female singers of the 50s.
So special
Sarah Vaughan too

We do have a few. Newport Jazz Festival "All of me" comes to mind.

Do the research you can find quite a few of her performances on film.
Thank you for uploading this film. Dinah is one of the greatest singers. Show Time is my fav song by Dinah Washington.
I love her voice, I have to find her biography now.

Dinah's mother had several children very late in her life when Dinah was already a teenager or grown, so young that when Dinah became successfu she tried to adopt them, so the woman talking about her sister is her sister but about 15-20 years younger
Her sons were mistly raised by Dinah's more a major gospel figure herself while Dinah toured
Taraji P Henson could play Ms. Washington. Both have pretty round faces and Taraji is very talented and versatile.
Lorreta Dvine could have played her but Dinah died at age 39...although I love LD i think that she is about 60 now
I was just thinking the same thing! Loretta Divine in some ways looks like Dinah.
Taraji Henson could do it. Young but old enough and talented enough to bring Dinah to life.

Queen Latifa! She can sing too!
Most of the pics and videos are from the early 1960s. I remember she played at a bar my Mom owned and came to the house some.

She was wonderful. What a terrible loss to her family and friends and to music that she died so young.

They was a couple chile
The Offspring of people who tried to Marginalize such resilient people must be very ashamed today.
Beautiful wonderful woman. Someone should do a biopic. Distinct voice, when you hear the voice, you know exactly who it belongs to.
First 2 minutes confirm, she did send Patti Labelle a telegram asking her to stop singing her songs!! AHAHHAHAHA
Probably telling her! LOL
What a voice! “This Bitter Earth” might be my favorite of her’s. Dinah looked ridiculous as a blonde tho. 🤷🏾♀️
Compared to the pink, green, purple, and orange hair now I’d say she was conservative
Melhor cantora de jazz na minha opinião. Parece q para os homens ficou a responsabilade de compor e tocar.
Taraji P. Henson should play Dinah in a life story tribute film
I think Octavia Spencer would be perfect in that role.
I doubt if Henson could handle the vocals, better get Fantasia.

Tasia’s voice is too scratchy. Dinah’s is smoother.
Loretta Devine looks the most like Dinah but she’s probably too old now to convincingly play a woman who died at 39.
