Well said! One fascinating woman here! Very fun to be allowed to tune into her trekking experiences simply with a few clicks on the iPad, no doubt! To think I’d have to either physically get to the local library, or to my grandparent’s encyclopedia’s to get an idea of Walker Lake not too long ago blows the mind 🤯

Not so fun fact, the bugs are out of control at walker lake because the toxic water means no fish, no fish means that when flies and bugs lay eggs in the water, all 10,000 eggs survive rather than most becoming fish food. This has also lead to massive explosions in the spider population as now there are enough flies to support tens of thousands of spiders, which take over the coasts of the lake come summer time. Very sad, and completely reversible.

    Hi W/H,
I went down one of the dirt roads that lead me to the shore of Walker lake last February. The weather was perfect, sunny not real cold and not a breath of wind. The lake just had little waves lapping at the shore and the view of the mountains from that shore was outstanding. The sun was shining on all the snow covered peaks. I decided to stay the night which was equally pleasant, dead silent and trillions of stars. I guess I lucked out when I was there because I was quite smitten with it and have been singing it’s praises ever since. I may be in for a big disappointment on my next trip though, I hope not. Thanks for the great video as usual.
    John

@Wonderhussy - I live deep in the heart of Texas enjoying your videos and this one about Walker Lake is really cool. The conspiracy theory about a hidden underwater tunnel going all the way to Malibu is something I have heard about over the years. There are many reports of USO's coming out of the water near Malibu. Some people even believe there is a hidden underwater base near Malibu located in an underwater plateau that has been found with special underwater imaging sonar. That plateau is big enough to house a massive underwater naval facility. Your information about all the places you explore is very interesting. Keep up the great work.

The legend of the Walker Lake Serpent is supposed to be from the Paiute Indians. Mineral County HS teams are the Serpents. When we lived in Babbitt, as Hawthorne Army Deport was then known, the story was the lake was bottomless. It's actually about 90 feet deep at its deepest. That lakeside town was named Walker Lake as I remember. It made its living by trophy fishing for the Lahotan Cutthroat Trout the lake used to be famous for.

I love Walker Lake and Hawthorne! Most of all the El Capitan! Until about 35 years ago, we use to go there dry camping and water skiing in August for 2 weeks every year, for a couple decades. From when I was a little kid into my 20's our camping group of 50-70 people met there each year. I learned to water ski there on a single ski at 7 yrs old. Many great memories there. Back then they had been down 168 feet in the lake and still did not find the bottom so the theory it goes to the oven would be unknown. There were a couple other small lakes that were supposed to connect to it. We had friends in the military there that were involved in that area of the service. They did test some explosives in the lake back then. We were also friends with the president to the Walker Lake Boat and Ski Club which we were members of for about 20 years also. That allowed us to camp on the property of the clubs! Jack was the owner and also owned the bar and cabins on the lake etc. He built all those. He was also the guard of the casino in the evenings. He has probably passed by now. Love to talk to you more about Walker sometime. Take care and God bless!

Conspiracy theories crack me up! Grew up in Schurz, went to high school in Hawthorne, became a deputy sheriff there, worked at the base and was a county commissioner for a term. We used to love to tell the travelers those very stories just to see the looks on their faces! The Navy (when it was run by the navy) used the south end of the lake to test supposedly inert 2.75 inch and 5 inch Zuni rockets launched from concrete pads up near the road at the south end of the lake. They would shoot them out into the lake which was pretty deep say, 30-40 feet at the time. Water levels began dropping after the droughts and upstream diversions. This caused the rockets to be exposed like picket fences out in the water. We put buoys out to warn boaters and the base hired workers to come in to gather the rockets and dispose of them by detonating them in a pile. All those supposedly inert rockets went 'high order" and exploded with a "Big Bang" and that is not in theory! (Pun intended). The mythical beast in the lake is "Cecil the Sea Serpent" that local ancestral tribal members claimed lived in the lake. Some non-Indians also claimed to have seen the serpent, mostly after several cocktails. As for it being bottomless, a company came to the lake in the 1980's and did core drilling near where the "middle is. At that time they stated the lake was about 140 ft. deep. Since then, the lake has probably dropped about 50-60 feet...so unless it gets substantial water soon, it may soon go the way of the other dry lake beds of Nevada.

It was a Great Lake with yearly national professional boat races that we used to drive from sacto cally yearly to be fans AND participants because the boats always need boat holders at the gun shot start! The Thanksgiving day fishing tournament was another reason to make the drive and visit the parents. I will be looking forward to your other Walker Lake videos. I've used the El Cap motel three times now, with a group of friends we fill it for a week in September. The story is that the tunnel is big enough for a submarine to come to the base to reload with weapons, there must be a huge tunnel running right through a highly active earthquake zone, and somehow the water in the lake just stays there regardless of the pipe running to the sea! I wouldn't be surprised if the tunnel theory was promoted by a three letter agency almost for fun!

Hawthorne was, during WWII a munitions storage and shipping location. The Naval Undersea Weapons development part has been active since 1950's. Munitions stored at Hawthorne included all forms of military munitions, including Battleship 16" projectiles and Nuclear war heads. During the height of the Vietnam conflict Hawthorne was really hopping. You can readily see the munitions bunkers from Hwy 395. There is a very nice historical military museum just as you enter downtown Hawthorne.

Also, Senator Harry Reid promised the Piutes that he would restore the water running into the lake. I know most of the places in the west that you go to so it is really nice to see it all again. Wonderhussy I hope this catchers your eye...if one of the others who read this are in email contact with you perhaps they could cut and paste this, and send it to her. She needs to get this info.
The PB Blaster you sprayed into the innards of your window track is neat stuff, solves a lot of problems....but it will also attract more dust. Not good in your rear window system. When you get home find someone you can trust, (you might even be able to do it yourself if you buy a set of interior panels tools and can find a video) and pull the interior panel off of the tailgate, and clean all the mechanism out. An air compressor with a straight nozzle and a shop vac and a couple hours you should be good to go. Barry could help probably. The trick is to get the panel off without breaking the tabs that hold it in place, and carefully putting it back on. There may be a plastic seal, clear plastic, under the interior panel, slice it carefully so you can tape it back up, but you need access to the works in there.
As much off roading as you do it should probably be done every couple of years

I wonder how they shut that tunnel off to keep the lake from draining into the ocean. look for a chain at the shoreline leading to a huge rubber drain plug.

Bob Anderegg My though exactly. Walker Lake surface is 3900 feet ... above sea level.

    • @andynewman835
      @andynewman835 4 роки тому +6

If the lake is deep enough, say 4000+ ft, and the tunnel is below sea level and connects to the ocean, water pressure equilibrium is plausible.

I was thinking about the elevation difference between the lake and the ocean. I don't know the elevation at the lake, but if the lake is higher the lake would drain. If it is even and there is a tunnel that could explain why the lake is becoming more salty. WH did state it was becoming more salty, very interesting.

IF it is possible to construct tunnels like that than they certainly know how to construct a lock, you know like the ones in canals. It is also said that these tunnels are all over the world. One not being far from there at China lake which is a dry lake bed. It is a weapons test area so "could be".

Hussy hour my Favorite , because I can relate to you and your story telling. . You missed some hot springs, or maybe on later. When you were up in Danio ,theres a BLM camp ground just before at Virgin Valley were there's a pool to swim, a shower house, camp spots Free and if your lucky go dig some Opals at Royal Peacock Opal mine, keep what you find. And pool got those little fish that come over and clean your died skin. Then theres more hot springs feather down . . Love you!

If you found a mechanic in Hawthorne, he would have charged less than 35 bucks to remove the liftgate door panel, cleaned out the window tracks, and put it back together for you. That's a 10-15 minute job.

I used to go there with my dad when he raced boats. I hadn't been there since I was a kid, sad to see it like that now. Thanks for covering these now lessler known areas. Btw, recommend getting a little camper van or rv eventually. A lot more comfortable, saves a lot on hotels / motels when you travel a lot, can stay away from the populated places a lot easier by boondocking, along with extra privacy, all for an extra experience of these places you go. It'd allow for a little more time to film also from what other travel channels I watch show.

Have to weigh the options before I visit that one: Is getting to experience the surreal lonely beauty of Walker Lake worth the horror of having thousands of flies alight on your camp and in your car? In any case, Wonderhussy, you are hands down THE best storyteller this side of the hemisphere - I'm almost afraid to click "play" on your next video for fear of dying of laughter! You'd give Scheherazade a run for her money!!!

Fishing there used to be off the hook (pardon the pun). When I was a kid late 60's early 70's), we would head over from June Lake (camping for vacation) for food and so mom could play the slots at El Capitan. I remember seeing the pictures of these huge cutthroat trout on the walls at El Capitan.

Sounds similar to Mono Lake. Maybe head over there and do a video about Mono Lake and compare it to Walker Lake ? I've visited Mono Lake several times in the 1990's but had never heard of Walker Lake until you started talking about it. I visited Cal., Yosemite, Mono Lake, the Eastern Sierra Nevada (Rte 395) and Death Valley (and Baker !) several times. Enough to see in those places never made it to Nevada except to stay in Beatty when visiting DVNP. About the bugs ? I would have doused it with bug spray rolled up the windows and found something to do outside for an hour or two. Repeat if necessary.
