I've been to China four times already and knew this. Yet, most of my co-workers, neighbors, and friends (in the USA) don't believe me that China is a great place to visit. They think my photos and videos are only of "what the Chinese want me to see". Does not matter that I keep telling them I was free to walk around these areas, unescorted.
They further refuse to believe me when I say China overall has cleaner looking streets and public parks than what we currently have in America. All of a sudden... I find myself surrounded by "China experts" who make ignorant statements like "the Chinese are all starving and live in old run down deteriorating dirty looking cities". The other ignorant thing I often hear is "The poorest Americans live better than the average Chinese". They say this and yet has never visited China once.
Thanks to folks like you who post these videos to try and balance out all of the lop sided negative propaganda fed to people in the West by the news media on a daily basis.

Most of Americans, like more than 60% never had a passport, never steps outside of America. Everything they know about the world is from their mainstream media propaganda, like Fox News, CNN, MSNBC….etc. Mark Twain once said, it is very hard to convince Americans with facts, but very easy to fool them with lies. So you have it, the intellectual capacity of the average Americans. Sad.

Just do a search for Shanghai, Bejing, some Chinese city and you'll get plenty of returns of MURCAN/western visitors.

Friends from Britain, you are very welcome to travel to China. In the video, the countdown to the traffic light shows the change of traffic light in the video. In fact, big data's technology is used. When many cars stop at a certain traffic light one after another, he will know that this time has become a red light, combined with the previous vehicle parking time, it is easy to achieve how long the traffic light will change color in the future. It doesn't need to be connected to government surveillance or anything like that. So you don't have to think about it. In addition, you mentioned that there are very many cameras on the street. There is no doubt that this is true. There are many kinds of cameras. The first is traffic violation cameras, the second is road surveillance cameras, which mainly prevent thieves, and the third is big data comparison and face recognition. Naturally, it plays a monitoring role, but the number of these cameras is small, mainly concentrated in public areas. Personally, I think that in fact, many foreign friends are not completely Chinese, and foreign reports are not entirely correct. Once again, welcome to China. Have a nice trip in China. Thank you.

@@GeorgeWang-w9h You are right. Foreign travelers who come to China have two misunderstandings. One is that there are cameras everywhere. In fact, most public cameras are used for traffic management and belong to the traffic police system. The second is that there are police everywhere. In fact, there are very few police patrolling the streets in Chinese cities. The ones you see in uniform are just auxiliary police or security guards. They have no law enforcement power.

Her dad works for the government in China (local mid level) which got me some amazing perks such as touring some government buildings which not many foreigners see. Met my wife on the metro she worked in one of the offices near me and she walked into me by accident. Spilt coffee all over my suit and she insisted she dry cleaned it for me. Picked it up at her apartment and went from there. Had no intention of meeting a Chinese woman so it’s amazing how life can take you one direction. Currently live near Basingstoke UK.

Btw, London has the MOST security cameras per capita in the WORLD, so I found it interesting that you two focused on the cameras in China. Personally, I love cameras since I don’t plan on committing a crime and the camera footage will keep me safe. Here in America, over and over again, we search video footage in order to solve a crime. In New York City, we are installing MORE cameras because of the rampant crime rates, no one blinks an eye about it. We don’t need to be overly sensitive to the cameras in China, we really are NOT that important for anyone looking at us. Don’t forget, there are over 1.4 billion people, who has the time to watch over everyone. Replaying footage after a crime has been committed is helpful, no different from what we do in the 🇺🇸

Just came from your video on the plank wall. Thank you so much for these videos. They are so realistic and useful. I also really love your enthusiasm and the excitement you demonstrate when trying out things for the first time. As others have said, China is indeed an amazing country with such a tremendous mix of old and new. When I visited Shanghai around 2010 I was amazed at how beautiful and organized the country was. The people were amazingly friendly. My wife and I walked all over the city using their extensive subway system. The food was amazing. And at no time, nor at any time did it feel even slightly sketchy. It is true, like you mention, there are cameras everywhere and this might make people feel like "Big Brother" is watching. But the benefits are definitely worth it. The Chinese have learned a lot from us culturally. I think we could definitely learn a bit or two from them two. Yin and Yang. Thanks again for the great videos.

But the Western media only criticizes China and says that Chinese people have no freedom. But Chinese women can still eat barbecue outside at 2 o'clock in the morning. This is impossible in London. The most important aspects of monitoring are traffic monitoring and safety monitoring. The main thing on the roads is traffic monitoring to deter drivers from driving fast.

It’s so important to approach China with an open mind, especially when media representation often focuses on stereotypes or limited viewpoints. Beijing alone has such a rich mix of ancient history and modern innovation-it’s a city that can’t be fully understood from just pictures or headlines. As you explore, I’m excited to see how you share the complexities of China-showcasing not just the well-known landmarks, but also the everyday life, culture, and the people that make this country so unique. It’s refreshing to see more objective, well-rounded perspectives. This series is a great chance to show the real, multifaceted China that’s often overlooked. BTW, more police in Beijing because it's the capital the political centre, and also they're near Tiananmen which is like the white house in US. Not the case in elsewhere in China. Plus a lot of uniformed people you see are not police anyway, they're security guards.

In fact, there is no need to visit this kind of famous restaurant because you pay extra "premium" for it's reputation. On the contrary, you can pick up those intermediate level restaurants which also can provide good quality food. Maybe not so good like what in famous restaurant Quanjude, but still can provide good quality food close to those in famous restaurant, like 80%~90% close to famous restaurant.Their price will be more reasonable and you don't have to wait for a long queue.

The difference between small cities and large cities in China lies only in scale. The purchasing power is similar, and in fact, small cities, especially when living in one's own home, do not require rent. Although the salary may be lower, there is no rent expense, so the purchasing power may actually be better than that of workers in big cities.

Thank you.

I was quite surprised when I first visited Beijing in December 2015. Absolutely like it. Yes, under surveillance but I have nothing to hide so I feel very safe. For the Peking duck, usually the essense is the skin, not the meat. If you go to the right branch you may not need to queue at all. I went to one around Wang Fu Jing area and I went in alone, ordered one whole duck, finished it, and satisfied for the rest of the day.
China is no longer what others perceived to be any more. I went there with similar mentality and found that Chinese cities are very modern, people well behaved (in big cities; in contrary to tourists we met outside of China; and I do speak Chinese so may help a bit), helpful and friendly. To me, it is more modern than American cities as a matter of fact. Everywhere you got to pay digitally, although cash is still acceptable (due to the government's requirement/directive). For the nay sayers, forget politics, visit there and see for yourself.

As Chinese people, we never boast about how convenient and comfortable our lives are on social media. Our 5000-year-old culture has always taught us to be diligent, kind, harmonious, responsible, and filial. We love our neighbors, friends, small families, and our large family (the country). This culture allows us to disregard others' smears, except for Japan. China has a variety of delicious foods, beautiful scenery, and profound cultural heritage. We welcome everyone to visit China and learn about it. The fake news on social media has created deep prejudice among many foreigners who have never been to China. We don’t expect everyone to understand China, but we hope that after visiting, you can learn more about our history and culture. Then you will understand why China has achieved such tremendous development and progress. We welcome you to give us more rational and critical suggestions, as China is not a perfect country and has its shortcomings. Perhaps from your perspective, you can identify more of our shortcomings, and our government will gradually improve and continue to enhance the quality of life for our people. Thank you!

Do not mind the staff in uniform in the subway; they are there to help passengers. If you notice someone next to you playing music or videos loudly on their phone, and you feel uncomfortable directly reminding them, you can signal the staff. They will politely but firmly stop the person's inconsiderate behavior. If there is a quarrel or even a fight in the subway (though this is very rare), the staff will promptly intervene. In the past, it was common to see people begging in the subway (who might also take the opportunity to watch your pockets). This was a difficult phenomenon to control, but now you won't see beggars in the subway at all. Believe me, during the era when begging was prevalent, many beggars could afford to buy 2-3 apartments through their begging.

    1) The warm tips, it means "kindly reminding" or smt like that.
    2) The cameras over the road, basically for monitoring all the cars to see if there're violation of the traffic regulation. Of course there're also camera in the streets to monitoring the situation of pedestrian, but actually there won't be a man who sit all day just to check everything you done, cause there aint this much police to go through all this (just imagine how many streets in China). These are more for the case that if there's some crime committing in the related area, the police gonna find the video recorded in some streets to find out what happens. But that doesn't work sometimes. During my high school l lost my cellphone somewhere in the streets, but the police tell me that those cameras aint working there, so... I was sad cause Iphone6 plus is quite expensive for a student.
    3) Beijing is really a big city, there are areas with historical places, high-end CBD area, and romantic and beautiful places like bars and live houses, like in Houhai block. Got to try them if you have time.
    4) If possible, you guys can try the cities like Chengdu, where keeps the panda and so many great dishes, or the cities in Guangdong province, always great foods and beautiful sightseeing. If you can't stay for a long time, maybe try some cities in DongBei, the people there are the most hospitable in China.
    5) Actually most of the people will like to give help to you, just ask them if you got troubles. Even they don't speak English, they would try to find someone who knows English to help(Yes that occurs to me many times) . And don't hesitate to ask help from police, they have got used to all kinds of strange requests.
    6) Popular restaurant could keep you waiting so many time, cause there are some many people. Next time if you're in hurry or have other arrangement, just ask the receptionist that how much time you have to wait. And there are really soooooo many great restaurants, like for peking duck, so you don't have to wait that long just for a dishes.( But of course if you just wanna try this restaurant, that seems OK, up to you)
    Have a great time there!
