An igloo, what you call a bunker, is built like a regular building, though many are built of preformed concrete, then buried. The goal is to have a fairly constant temperature inside that doesn't go above about 80F to preserve the munitions and reduce the rate at which the propellant degrades. In the summer time, during the daylight hours the military explodes many old bombs there in Hawthorne NV. The sound waves cross the Sierra mountains and can be heard clearly in the California Gold Country. I wonder if it contributes to the increased earthquake activity near there.
We found unexploded munitions on Hutier Kaserne growing up. We went on hayrides an climbed all over these ruins an found some. I thought my father was going to have a heart attack when we found them.
Many years back Desert Magazine had an article about teenagers that found a landmine in a WW2 training area. Back home they wanted to make sure they made it safe to have around. SO they put it on dad's garage drill press to make holes to pour out the powder. Obviously it exploded and people died. The article was a warning to desert exploration.
I remember driving to work on 911. I thought it was a prank radio joke. It was creepy and peaceful at the same time afterwards. No commercial jets flying afterwards but military fighters every 30 minutes. Couldn’t hear them coming only when they were overhead and already past flying at near the speed of sound. I think I remember a couple of sonic booms.
