For fun, these are my ideas for Mark after watching the first set: 1. Mike’s a big dude so drop shot him a few times (maybe in a row) and make him move forward and backwards on your terms just to force him out of rhythm and to annoy him; 2. on short balls, slice approach short to make him hit passing shots from shoelace level; and, 3. on ad side returns, maybe SABR a few times to grab that kicker early. Mark and Mike. The two contenders for Cole's gold at the Essential Tennis Universe contesting for the rematch possibility (?) Come on Ian. We have to do something like that!!!
Mike is a really good player but a bit too cocky for my taste. Momentum can change in the matter of minutes in a match or in the beginning of a new set. Mark is definitely capable of playing alot better but I believe he needs to be more aggressive and stay closer to the baseline to hit more penetrating shots. Maybe also not be a bad tactic to charge the net once in a while to keep Mike off balance. My prediction is that the second set will be competitive. Looking forward to the remainder of the match!
It may come off as cocky but I had a confidence issue growing up. So I try to channel that "athletic arrogance" on court to increase my inner confidence. It helped me improve my mental tennis game.
It looks like Mark entered the match with the wrong mentality. He cant beat Mike in a power baseline duel. His focus should be being consistent with enough deep and no more than that. One of the best things I learned from Brad Gilbert was him saying to Agassi "U dont need to kill the ball on every shot. U dont need to be the best that ever existed. U just need to be a little better than the person on the other side of the net on that day"
Big hitting. I would start giving a short but still low slice to Mike's backhand. Try and make him move up just a tad, bend knees, and what not. Just to see how it effects him. Mike's just hitting way too good at this point. I'd throw in a random under serve, some baseline topspin lobs before he comes to the net. Get him off rthym. Good luck Mark, rooting for ya bud
Great display of attacking tennis from Mike, just so strong all around. I love Mark's game but unsure what he can do here - maybe aim for slightly riskier targets, more angles, maybe get into the net a little more, but it has to be behind the right shot or it's target practice for Mike.
I understand the Mike hits big and has a nice game but Mark seemed to be pushed back and rolling over on a lot of his shots almost looking unstable at times. Mike just seemed planted in the middle of the court dictating at will. Great stuff.

mike has a great game. And he just put on a clinic on how to beat someone who is not as strong as you. Perfect example of sticking to your game plan on just executing it.
I feel like Mike is bad stylistic match-up for Mark. He's an all rounder who can attack as well. It's interesting to see Mark make so many UE when he usually gets lulls people into his defensive game. Mike's consistency and pace is incredible!
I'm recovering from jaw surgery and stuck at home so if you guys could pump out like 5 matches for me over the next week I'd really appreciate it! Hah! fantastic as always.
Just love the aggressive style of play from Mike, doing everything I try to tell myself to do (and unlike my sorry 4.0 ass, actually succeeding): groundstroke depth, attacking short balls, and not getting sucked into 40-shot crosscourt rallies. I do have to ask, though: why the obsession in titles of listing what they played in college? They're full-grown adults, and we're watching the players they are now, not what they were years ago.
What helped me is trying to hit really specific spots in the court over and over again. Instead of focusing on hit to their backhand side which is a very general target; make your target in the location of the court more specific. That's how winners are created. The pros are trying to hit spots rather than just where their opponents weakness is. Thats why the average rally in the pros is 2-4 shots.
Mark is rushing his setup on the topspin backhand - not sure why but it has a very abbreviated rushed look to it, and he is coming up a little early and high when he makes contact. The Mike kick server is just 'sick' for a rec player. Mark has to stand in on that thing and be a cat.
Not sure why this has become such a big discussion point. She is a young lady who is very introverted and doesn't like interviews. Needs to mature a bit and she can handle it or she should just not play clay tennis for now. This is a not a tennis issue, just her individual problem.
@@krishnancom A LOT more to it than that, we are talking mental health issues and removing that stigma, also the monied sports elite hierarchy treating athletes like indentured servants, if an athlete does not want to do an interview they should not have to. Interviews are so outdated and old school, they are awkward and uncomfortable, a pack of reporters trying to ask that "gotcha" question and wanting athletes to reveal personal information that is none of their business. @@georgebasham2279 Osaka has made $18M in prize money alone + all the endorsements. This is such a small obligation. @@krishnancom We'll have to agree to disagree on this topic. Athletes are human beings who have rights. She won the prize money due to her on court performance. One last question: what kind of UTR does it take to play D1 Tennis up there in Wisconsin/Great Lakes area? I live in Texas, and you have to have at least 11+ UTR to play D1
You would need to have a 10 UTR to make the team. But at least an 11 to play in the lineup. 11-12 will be about 4-6 singles and 13.5-12 to play at 1-3 in the singles lineup. I played at western michigan which is a mid major D1 program. I played 5-6 in singles and 2-3 in doubles before I transferred to UWW. As you get to schools in the Big Ten or the Big 12. The UTR will go up one point for each position. Hope this helps. Sorry if this explanation is confusing.
Mark could use some racket head control on his backhand. Usually when he tried to go full power with the backhand, he lost control of the racket head and the ball. The shots where he has racket head control were the best backhands he made during the game.
Love what you guys have done with the channel! It's more interesting to watch. Adding the players perspective in a competition is such an entertaining component that is not shown at the professional level. Keep up the good work!
is it dejavu or is this a reupload? because swear I've seen Scott say "passing someone with slice is bad because the ball just hangs in there" or "I've accused Mark of coming up with lines beforehand" 😂 I've also seen Ian say "Mike is the only person after Cole to just absorb Mark's heavy shots and just send it back"
Loved your comments (both of you) after game three. But I'm curious, Mike, were those your DI or DIII dirty words the ET crew deleted? Anyway, keep coming to the net; those low volleys are sweet.
Great question. So going Into the match I thought mark was going to be more of a grinder and slice his backhand in order to counter my attacking style. I was going to use my one handed backhand that I have been working on to counter the slice. That was my x factor game plan going into this match. And maybe get In his head of not knowing if i was going to use one a one handed or a two handed topspin backhand. But that strategy went out the window when he wasn't using the slice at all but instead throttling his backhand.
@@michaeltreis9751 ok I just didn’t realize that there was that much of a difference between your 1 hand and 2 handed backhand which is why I was confused. Thanks
Even though I have a good two hander I sometimes hit it to much from the middle of the court. I have also been trying to hit my slice to develop a change of pace shot. Also it will help improve and soften up my brick volleys. Lol
@@EssentialTennis It's going to start getting hot so you might consider practicing more in the heat to get ready for your Atlanta trip to take on Tennis Troll and his crew. Would be a good idea for some funny WWE style promos. haha
This is the second time (I believe) that Scott has questioned Mark's strategy of taking big swings but from way behind the baseline during a match. I'm wondering if Scott ever communicated this to Mark since I know they're friendly. (EDIT: oh wait is this just an edited version of a previously shown live match? Regardless I wonder if Scott ever gave Mark this advice before or after this. )
Fun match. Mike has far more ways to win the points. I like Mark's game, but he stands way too far behind the baseline and hits safe mid court balls. I'm sure he can outlast a lot of players, but I doubt that gets it done against Mike.
I think mark tries taking offensive shots when he’s in defensive positions too often he has too start stepping in and handle high balls then wait deep and take them lo
Mark needs to use his speed and develop a volley/net game. He makes too many unforced errors on his forehand and needs to get his first serve in. He also shouldn't stay deep and exchange hits.
@@EssentialTennis Ah I see, I thought I was going crazy swearing I've already watched this before LOL. It's great that it's been edited with the confessionals and better audio in general as I thought the audio during the livestream was kinda low.

is it dejavu or is this a reupload? because swear I've seen Scott say "passing someone with slice is bad because the ball just hangs in there" or "I've accused Mark of coming up with lines beforehand" 😂 I've also seen Ian say "Mike is the only person after Cole to just absorb Mark's heavy shots and just send it back"
Loved your comments (both of you) after game three. But I'm curious, Mike, were those your DI or DIII dirty words the ET crew deleted? Anyway, keep coming to the net; those low volleys are sweet.
😅
Yes they were.... lol
Big boy with the big... yes now I’m paying attention
😅
So this is the edited version of the LIVE match we had a few months ago?
Yes, all the commentary and confessional cameras included!
Can’t wait!
We can't either!
Please Sir, can i have some more please?
More to come! 🔥
Replay???
I might have missed this, but is Mike big by any chance?
Very small... lol

I’m confused with Mike’s 1 hand/2 hand backhand strategy. How does switching help him much at all?
Great question. So going Into the match I thought mark was going to be more of a grinder and slice his backhand in order to counter my attacking style. I was going to use my one handed backhand that I have been working on to counter the slice. That was my x factor game plan going into this match. And maybe get In his head of not knowing if i was going to use one a one handed or a two handed topspin backhand. But that strategy went out the window when he wasn't using the slice at all but instead throttling his backhand.
Mike responded!
@@EssentialTennis now I got Mike AND Ben to respond! 😂
Lol
It's nice outside - why not set up for the hard courts.
We're too weather dependent here in Wisconsin to set up and schedule a full camera, confessional match outside.
@@EssentialTennis It's going to start getting hot so you might consider practicing more in the heat to get ready for your Atlanta trip to take on Tennis Troll and his crew. Would be a good idea for some funny WWE style promos. haha
Scott is really developing as a commentator - maybe he should go national or even global?
This is the second time (I believe) that Scott has questioned Mark's strategy of taking big swings but from way behind the baseline during a match. I'm wondering if Scott ever communicated this to Mark since I know they're friendly. (EDIT: oh wait is this just an edited version of a previously shown live match? Regardless I wonder if Scott ever gave Mark this advice before or after this. )
Mark is looking lean and mean! Those squats are paying off. Or is it less Taco Bell?
Fun match. Mike has far more ways to win the points. I like Mark's game, but he stands way too far behind the baseline and hits safe mid court balls. I'm sure he can outlast a lot of players, but I doubt that gets it done against Mike.
Stay tuned! 🔥
I think mark tries taking offensive shots when he’s in defensive positions too often he has too start stepping in and handle high balls then wait deep and take them lo
Thanks for your comments Jacob, glad you enjoyed the match!
Is this a rematch, or just the summed parts from the live match a few months ago??
Its a rematch ua-cam.com/video/847To5eFd-Q/v-deo.html
@@kyanpepperz53 yeah, that makes this a replay
@@tennnis498 looks like no fresh match lol, but I'll still watch!
@@kyanpepperz53 Judging by that video it's the exact same game. Based on the thumbnail from this video everyone is wearing the exact same clothes.
This is the edited version with commentary and confessional cameras!
Mark using hyper g?
Mike has a very D1 attuitude
Its stuck with me lol

Yeah you do 😏
One day I want to take Mark's self yelling coaching style to table tennis. They won't know what's coming.
🤣 it’s so good
Dont forget to BWEH
Why stop at ping pong? I believe my chess game can be improved with BWEH power. Gramps lower your hearing aide. Mark has shown me the way.
why does mark verbalize every thought he has on the tennis court. why not just keep them inside? weird
can't wait for Mark to start Bwehing!!
Ian is an imposter!
Mark needs to use his speed and develop a volley/net game. He makes too many unforced errors on his forehand and needs to get his first serve in. He also shouldn't stay deep and exchange hits.
I’m confused. Didn’t they already play a few months ago?
Yes you are correct. But on the live stream you weren't able to see our confessional cameras between change overs.
@@michaeltreis9751 oh. Okay. Thanks. Take it easy on Mark by the way.
reupload?
We live streamed this match a few months ago, this is the edited version with the confessional cameras
@@EssentialTennis Ah I see, I thought I was going crazy swearing I've already watched this before LOL. It's great that it's been edited with the confessionals and better audio in general as I thought the audio during the livestream was kinda low.
6:26 ??
Is Taco Bell for Mark ready ? 👀
😬
Mark's serve seems like a ton of effort and energy for not much power or kick. Something seems off there.
Well played by Mike but cheering an opponent's mishits when you're up 5-1 is a bit Al Bundy.
C'MON MARK! THE POWER OF BWEH COMPELS YOU!
99% of free and easy points were directed to mark's backhand.
