    Mark appears to be too tense trying to muscle the ball which robs you of power and control. Important to remain loose in grip , arm & body so the kinetic chain can work properly, try it practice and you'll notice more power and precision

    • @cldavis33
      @cldavis33 3 роки тому +2

      It's true. We've all seen Mark lot's of times - he's outgunned in this matchup because Mike is a physical freak for tennis so that part won't change. Mark has to relax, and work on 'fast feet - loose hands' control court position better, and find combinations that frustrate Mike. A very high level MEP maybe, something.

    Ian, can you do a video on the legitimacy of grunting? There have been studies supporting that it helps players hit harder by stabilizing the core, helping relax through the shot, etc. There is stigma and even legitimate questions about if grunting is within the rules, though.

    • @rodf9000
      @rodf9000 3 роки тому

      Yeah, I think that cat is out of the bag, unfortunately. I guess it’s too subjective as to when grunting becomes a hindrance so they don’t enforce it at all, but they have when a player celebrates a great shot before the point is over.

    Mark slightly improved all his serve stats from the first set as well as return minimally. But it was the ability to just stay in the rallies more this set that made it slightly more competitive, over doubling the points he won, from 11 to 23. Mike somehow, served even better this set, except 2nd serve, but that doesn't really matter with such high 1st serve percentages. His return win % did drop though, from 64.7 to 50%. Still a fantastic win %, but showing Mark's slight improvement on serve.The only other notable thing is Mike's net points won, winning only 2/6. Mark did better at applying pressure and keeping the ball lower when Mike approached the net.

  • @grimson
    @grimson 3 роки тому +2

    Mike's timing on the backhand side is impeccable. He picked so many clean on the short hop. He said 220 lbs gets you easy power and it does; maybe it should also mean you see a lot of drop shots? Get him out of the pattern of just dictating with power from the center of the court. Even a poor drop shot changes that rythmn and makes him run, and a good one wins you the point. Otherwise I thought Mark did everything he could & if he had held at 3-1 we might've had a 3rd set. Another great match and video!

    Marks high serve toss hurts me. Not only did he hit a bunch of double faults, his lower first serve percentage meant mike was getting a lot of chances to dictate off a second serve (likely encouraging mark to go bigger on second and miss some). Though mark for a couple aces and free points on first serve.
    Mike was right mark should target mikes forehand more. And others were right Moving mike north and south with higher heavier deep balls and some shorter angles and drop shots could have elections some fitness advantage for mark. (Though If mike is recently down 15lbs or more mikes got strong muscles on the lighter body.). Mark needed a few more longer points to exploit the fitness difference.

      I think you are right about this and probably the biggest problem I see with his game. He is solid in so many ways that I think he'd win a lot more matches if he just changed that. He very consistently moves up to about 3 feet behind the baseline between rally shots, then retreats to about 6 feet or more behind the baseline even when the ball is bouncing just past mid court on his side. He rarely steps into the court or even stays at the baseline. Sure, sometimes its just not possible and Mike obviously has a quality game, but there were definitely a lot of times when Mark was retreating for no apparent reason on routine rally shots.

    We shouldn't ignore the impact of that court. Imagine these two players on an European clay court. I'd bet on Mark any day. Mike's serve is such a weapon on this court. Returning that serve on clay would be much easier for Mark and so it would have been a different match when Mike had to face more resistance in his serve games.
    Regardless, great level and great competing of Mark versus such a good offensive player.

    Is anyone else wondering why more people don’t use a cutting slice serve on this court. It’s a quick court, feel like the average USTA 4.5 tennis doesn’t have the serve volley option in their locker. This is obviously just a small sample of tennis but I rarely see it. Whereas in the UK I see it popped into a game and I recently did it to a lad on a clay court

  • @javabandit
    @javabandit 3 роки тому +1

    Someone said it already, but Mark's shots are too centrally located (middle third of the court). Mike was grooving off of Mark's shots like it was a ball machine session. There really was no variation, at all. Even Mark's slice floated, count to one-two-three, step and hit. It was like clockwork. Hit deep/hard to the middle-third, hit deep/hard to the middle-third, slice deep to the middle-third. That definitely ain't going to get it done. Mike is way too good to simply hit hard to the middle-third and expect him to miss. There was also no strategy change from Mark from the first to the second set. It was the same thing.
    Given Mike's size, I think a better approach would have been to mix in dropshots as well as short-angled low pace balls. Get Mike out of that baseline middle-third position. That would have forced Mike to constantly move forward, hit up on the ball, maybe hit some slices, and take pace off in order to keep the ball in play. Mike was WAY too comfortable.
    I think a big part in beating Mike probably rests in forcing him to go north-south at least half the time. Instead of 95% east-west.

    I'm not an expert but it looks to me that Mike is getting better timing on his groundstrokes and pushing his momentum through the ball whilst Mark looked on the back foot rather and a lot of his momentum on his strokes appeared to be upwards rather than forwards and he actually moved backwards on some of his strokes. Maybe Mike has a flatter style which suits this surface better?

    My opinion: Mike is very consistent have perfect technique in most of strokes. Maybe a little stiff at the net.
    Mark have to work on technique, in the forehand he arch his back and lose a lot of power by not doing the weight transfer and this looks also at the serve, but the ball kicks so I dont think thats a big problem, in the backhand he has no top spin coming out cause the movement is stoped in front and not continuous. At the slice if he holds his wrist he can have better results. However is notable what this two do on the courts . Great game

    Mark can hit big but not as big as Mike so trying to play Mike's game is a losing proposition. Mark needed to hit more junk and make Mike move around. But, great fun to watch, both of these guys would kick my butt.

    Mark got amped up grunt and all but he also increased his tempo probably redlined = erratic service after the break, his timing was definitely off.

    I feel like I have heard the commentary before. If you give Mark a chance at volley he will find a way to get there. The no offense to Mark from Scott then the no offense to Mike from Ian. Feels like I have heard these lines before this video as well.
    Can someone please tell me if they remember something or I am just having hallucinations

    Marks toss on serve is too high imo ... waiting too long when he loads.. so timing can be difficult. Vs Mike's serve toss is much lower and swing is more fluid without a break in-between.

    Can we get Ira vs Scott/Mike/Mark
    I like Ira’s game and Mike’s
    Both offensive
    Ira just wants to truck forehands 👍🏻
    Mike is offensive and comes to net when open 👍🏻
    I’m a lesser version of both 😆

    Great match. Mike was just too good. Love his style. his cool with the change of grunts coming from Mark. I think a ref would have given a warning for that. Also have seen the nationals match with the warning. Honestly as a viewer it annoyed me. Trolling as Scott called, not a fan. I rather loose without making myself look like an ass over nothing. It only costed Mike one break for he blocked it out. I don't see a guy trying to win, I saw guy reacting like a child who knows he is losing a game of tennis. Mike had the true winners mentality to day. The true master will exploit that weakness of Mark not enough controlling his emotions.

      wish they would give warnings on the ATP tour, it's getting ridiculous. Not a fan of the come on & whats either I like it old school when it was more respectful.I have played matches where my opponent even resorted to trash talking in between points.I'm ok with my opponent having a meltdown and breaking his racquet though then I know I got em rattled.
