The Quest 3: Amazing? Or Disappointing? - EVERYTHING We Know So Far

- Usually I script all my videos word for word, this time I decided to try something new. I outlined everything I've found about the Quest 3, hit record on the camera and this is the result. Hopefully there's at least a few nuggets of info you've haven't heard yet. I'm really looking forward to trying out the Quest 3 come this fall.
In early June 2023 Meta announced the Quest 3. We got to see what the new headset looks like as well as the new controllers but there were some things that were still left unsaid, like what is the field of view (fov) like? What is the battery life? And of course how are the new tracking ring-less and camera-less controllers going to be tracked? I was able to track down some of this information to put into this video, so now you can know everything Meta has currently revealed as well as some leaks about things Meta hasn't told us yet.

I’m getting it…2x cpu, pancake lenses, better resolution, colored pass through…awesome!!!
Will the porn be better or same?
@@larryc1616 what a stupid question to ask
Of course it WILL be better!!!
@@shuttzi9878 well, I'm a newbie buying my first vr headset. I don't play games but want to use it for concerts, movies, sports, travel and porn. Should I buy 299 Q2 or 499 Q3 for my purposes? What do you think?
@@larryc1616 Quest 3 will be much better for that due to Pancake Lenses but dont expect a good quality from a 360° video (cameras needed to record it are not yet there), just go with 180° or Flat screen vids
Q2 Is ok for watching Anime but not the normal videos.
@@shuttzi9878better resolution better obviously
"I have personally never used pancake lenses" - you're in for such a treat :D
I was already dying to get away from fresnel before pancake even arrived, but the edge to edge clarity and not having to hunt out the 'sweet spot' is so nice. Godrays gone too. Couldn't watch films in VR on fresnel because the 'glow' would drive me crazy but it's all nice and clear in pancake vision :3
Dude amazing video, seriously.
All your videos are straight to the point and informative, yet your channel has its own personality. Thanks to you I chose my GPU, and having a great experience in VR. Can't wait for the Quest 3 tho! My main issues with the Quest 2 was the comfort, FOV and passtrough. And at least the comfort and passtrough is getting better!
Thanks, the other updates I saw didn't mention the 6e wifi upgrade which I think will be important to have.
I also agree with what you say about internal batteries not being a priority for the controllers in your eyes. If anything, I'd rather have removable batteries so I can just use my rechargeable AAs. and not have to worry about the prospect of losing a controller due to a battery failure. Internal batteries for controllers are overhyped imo and just give a controller another potential point of failure.
Im getting one as early as i can. But i think the whole charge for more storage model is short sighted. If it could support expandable storage that would be best, but i feel that folks stop buying games when the storage gets full and that costs meta more lost revenue than selling upgraded storage options
Will you be testing the same gpus with the quest 3 when or if you get it? If so it’d be great to know the performance in Assetto Corsa Coompetizione since that’s the main game i’d be playing and it’s a good benchmark for all games because of how terribly optimized it is. Looking to upgrade to the 7900XTX so hoping for some new videos of it!
Eye tracking would be a killer feature! Dang gonna wait for Quest 4 for PCVR my Quest 2 is enought
Awesome as always 👏
I actually think the AR might be decent! Imagine it scanning your room then having a proper toy soldier battle, placing tiny artillery units on the sofa and commando troops on the coffee table etc 😁
Turn your living room into Scorched Earth. You familiar with that game?
Or easy access to the lube and fleshlight 💋
THey can add that chess game from Star Wars into Vader Immortal...
Great breakdown, thanks for your hard work!
Nintendo had adaptive triggers before Sony. So they could do it technically. Hopefully they upgrade the user interface.
I was really looking forward to the extra field of view. 😭
Fighting zombies in my actual home using the mixed reality sounds good though.
With the headset being thinner and the pancake lenses I've heard some people say the field of view, while technically similar to the Quest 2, might look a little bigger. We'll have to wait and see of course though.
What head strap do you recommend for the quest 2
Yeah I won’t be upgrading from my Q1 until they can get a larger fov and micro OLED displays.
How do you deal with quest 2 controller drift? Anything other than using spray. Hopefully the new tech in quest 3 will last longer before it has drift
It's a shame it doesn't do PCVR in a more native way. I get that they wanna stay wireless but honestly, the cable never bothered me that much, I much rather have no latency and no compression artifacts.
I guess the Quest 4 will have eye tracking, that's the big performance booster right there, only render at full rez where you're looking at.
I wish they would go back to making these headsets in black.
I need prescription lenses for the Quest 2, and I have a very bad feeling about this new pancake lenses on the Q3. It seems that there's no way to mount prescription lenses on the Q3. Damn, I really hope they find a way.
A big part hinges on if one or two displays. If one display like the Q2, take 10% of resolution off of anything they say. This pixel space is needed to optically separate and create two displays. Getting the resolution and screen door is the same as the QP, but visually inferior to the QP.
Meta says visually, q3 is be better than pro. And of course it is more powerful as well, meaning you can crank the resolution with ADB which will improve things just as much as the pancake lenses and pixel pump
@Jack Frosterton Context is everything. If one panel, betting the QP looks better and same SDE. Nice if it is better, but they touted the Q2 resolution and then admitted a lot of pixels lost due to one display used. That is why the lower spec QP actually had higher res, since no pixel loss.
@@jackfrosterton2530 There's no possible way it's visually better than the pro, the pro has a much higher quality LCD with a quantum dot layer and local dimming, and has 2 separate screens.
@@Blakostructr Oh yeah? I may be misinformed about this.
What I can say at least is that the resolution is significantly higher than the pro, that the lenses are the same, and that idiosyncratically based on the very few apps I spend time in, I could not care less about black levels. So for me, I could see it being pretty close. But for anyone, you do have to care more about local dimming than higher resolution.
But let's not forget either the most important factor, the optional availability of significantly increased texture resolutions. You can already make the quest 2 look as good as a pro with this in spite of inferiority across the board - you just can't actually use the q2 if you do because it doesn't have the computational power to run resolutions like that with an acceptable frame rate. Neither does the pro. But the q3 does.
The single vs dual screen, that's something I don't know about. Wonder how big of a difference it would make
Quest Pro does not look much better than Quest 2 if you ignore the improvement of the lens.
Good recap, the Q3 looks good and basically agree with you that a improved fov of 130 degrees and eye tracking would be worth the extra cost, imo would make it basically perfect
Q3 plus $799?
@@larryc1616 I'd pay that much, and I don't think it'd be absurd to keep the Q2 as the sub $400 option while adding the Q3 as a moderately premium consumer option
@@gimeurfridchiken4615 Q2 is 299 right now. I don't play games. Do you think the Q2 is good enough for movies, TV, concerts, sports, travel and most importantly Porn? Q2 or Q3 for my purposes?
QUEST headsets are made for standalone experience for and foremost, the PCVR capability are one of their last priorities so u wont see a 130 degrees standalone headset for a long while since it requires much higher computing power and add too much cost.
There is a reason Apple Vision pro is between 100-110 degrees even with a $3500 price tag
@@larryc1616 Yes, of course it is good enough for all of those things. People have been using it for those things for quite a while now, happily. Hard to say if it's worth the extra cost for Q3 but a lot of what people are paying for are the performance benefits that you seem not to need whatsoever. You'll find great deals if you hold off a few more months to black friday too. I use slickdeals as my one-stop for black friday deal-searching, has worked like a charm so far.
you might not respond but i been having many issues with the 6700xt and vr and i have not had any luck with the oculus debug tool settings and and the oculus software in general games just dont run well a bit and just look muddy/blurry i have good eyesight and i use link cable its usb 3.0 and has 2gbs times. so it will really help if you made a video about 6700xt on link and 6 your settings and also i have not been able to get that h.265 either but i have the drivers all updated so i have no clue. please help
Im definitely upgrading from my quest 2 on the pancake lenses and ar alone
I really hope that XR2 Gen 2 is based on 8 gen 2... Cuz it would really bring a massive performance bump not just GPU and CPU wise but MEMORY wise.
The Wifi 7 and UFS 4.0 support would've been mindblowing, same with AV1 codec.
Just from renders i can see that Audio will be much improved, the comfort and build quality will be a significant upgrade, same with tracking and guardian system.
For many it seems like it's not a significant upgrade but from just a little research it seems like a MASSIVE upgrade. Not everything is about Eye tracking, we need the basics to be as good as possible for the price and the Quest 3 will deliver just that and more.
It has been said that cooling was also much improved and the whole ''Stripe'' around the front is one big exhaust for the hot air.
FOV may be the same on paper but in practical use it should be closer to 100 degrees of view because of the lenses and the pupilary distance to optics.
I liked the Quest 2 but i had issues with it, most if not all of which seems to be adressed in the Quest 3 so I will be using this headset to death : )
I agree with you; if the basics are the very best they can be it makes the entire overall experience better. I thought about buying an HP Reverb G2 for awhile because people talked about how amazing the displays in it were but once I started reading reviews and how horrible pretty much everything else about it was I decided to pass and stick with 5the Quest 2.
While I'm disappointed we didn't get eye tracking and was hoping for more FOV and a few other upgrades, I'm very excited for the XR2 Gen 2 upgrade. While I've always felt the Quest 2's stand alone capabilities are amazing, considering the hardware they're using in it, I've also always wished the visuals looked sharper. Stand alone games, more often than not, look blurry because the GPU in the Quest 2 just isn't capable of pushing the pixels needed to get things looking as sharp and crisp as the Quest 2's displays are actually capable of. When I used the Quest 2 for PC VR and cranked up the resolution with my 3080ti for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised with how good the resolution of the Quest 2's display actually is. I love seeing my friends reactions when they try PC VR with the Quest 2 for the first time. All of them have experienced the Quest 2 in stand alone content and know what that's like but are then blown away with how much better the visuals are with a high end PC. Many of them had no idea the Quest 2's displays were even capable of visuals as good as they are.
Anyway, from what I've seen the XR2 Gen2 is based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 like you mentioned. I assume you've seen SadlyItsBradley's video talking about the XR2 Gen 2 leaks? If not here's the link to his video
ua-cam.com/video/SGv--PVDB3I/v-deo.html
Very juicy stuff if you're in to hardware specs and stuff.
So far the leaks Brad has reported on about the Quest 3 have all been spot on, so I'm inclined to believe this leak is spot on as well. According to specs for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 it's going to support LPDDR5X RAM but the XR2 Gen 2 will most likely use LPDDR5 (which is still a nice upgrade over the LPDDR4X in the XR2 Gen 1), it will support AV1 encoding and that massive uptick in GPU performance is because it will be using the Adreno 740 which fits with Meta's claims of 2X to 2.5X performance improvement over the Adreno 650 in the Quest 2. So yah, I'm very much looking forward to picking up a Quest 3 this fall. 😀
@@Maraksot78 Yup i already knew all those things cuz im a research freak, especially for VR related stuff 🤓👍
I just hope the GPU upgrade and new Snapdragon Upscaling will be able to deliver sharp enough image even if only for simplistic games.
Pancake lenses will bring a big boost to image clarity and usable field of view.
Its not perfect of course but its the closest to perfection we can get for $500 as of now.
I actually wish more developers would've copied HAX VR style of graphics cuz it works PERFECTLY with Quest 2 standalone but yeah...
Even in that game blur is still visible in the distance (even tho much father away than any other game)
It's a bit sad that it still won't have as good black levels, contrast, colours and FOV as the Quest 1. I will look to buy it second hand at a huge discount.
I think augmented reality has the potential to bring this far more mainstream than VR. Just more people will like that and want that IMO having demoed VR to tons of folks. They all want to walk around and not have to use joysticks at first. Theyll love walking through their backyard and shooting targets with virtual guns more than stumbling through and getting nauseous from locomoting in full vr.
I have the elite strap, and I have a feeling it could be modified to fit with only a small amount of diy
It'll never fit right if you diy
@@larryc1616 Why not? It's just a plastic ring that fastens around your head. All that's needed is for it to be anchored securely and angled appropriately
Hey I was wondering if you knew how to fix an ssd not showing up in BIOS in the boot menu on an Alienware windows 11 when I replaced it. Otherwise I cannot boot the PC and it just sends me to a page that says checking media presence. I really need some help with this.
What kind of SSD? m.2? If so, what CPU do you have? If it's Intel 10th gen and you're using the top m.2 slot on your motherboard it won't work. You'll have to use a different m.2 slot. The top slot only works with Intel 11th gen CPU's. It has to do with PCIe 4.0 support. Intel 10th gen CPU's don't support PCIe 4.0 and the top slot in their LGA 1200 motherboards are PCIe 4.0 only so in order to use the top slot you need an 11th gen CPU which do support PCIe 4.0
I'm hoping that the depth sensor will allow for an automatic and advanced guardian system. Currently I get guardian drift.
I'm a bit worried about whether we can get handstraps for the controllers, since the IR LEDs might be in the way of getting a handstrap secured on the controllers.
They look like they have a battery door similar to the Quest 2, so I'm assuming we'll be able to get some like my favorites for the Quest 2 from AMVR.

@@Maraksot78 I have the Kiwi Design ones that go over the top, but one like that probably would work indeed.
I also had some issues with my guardian, i fixed it by going into the headset and deleting the guardian history, then i made a new guardian and it was fixed. But i'm not sure if it will fix the guardian drift
I have the gen 1 quest and a Rift S, I’ll be getting this for games, and the apple for productivity. (And first adopter 😂)
Hopefully we can use our quest 2 aftermarket head straps
PSVR2 for life! I think I am done with Oculus unless they come out with a native display port for PCVR input. USB Link cable compresses and causes so many artifacts.
Your opinion
@@PaulDoyle-jq2ck True. Upset that Oculus got away from PCVR tethered headsets. The CV1 and Rift S was amazing and they dumped it all for a CPU/GPU that are found in cell phones. As long as graphics dont matter much its good for anyone but once you get spoiled to superior graphics running on a 3080ti graphics card its kind of hard to take anything else seriously. PSVR2 is killing it though. The library is growing weekly with exclusives on the way such as Firewall Ultra.
Do you think the life cycle of Meta Q's/Pro's devices will follow mobile phones?
What I'm thinking, Xbox, Nintendo, Sony have 4/5ys plus till a new device.
Meta & Apple look to be somewhere In-between consoles and phones.
I believe Apple already have the infrastructure and tooling to make that happen however they don't have data from people using it like Quest.
This period is a little frustrating for me and probably others. I can buy a QP. However Q3 is 5 months off. I mainly use PCVR which the QP excels at AND I want face tracking with the ability to use AR so when Apple release their d vice I have a comparison. (Hope that makes sense).
I did contact Meta and ask if they would run a scheme like Xbox did before the Xbox SX where you bought the Xbox One, the MS subscription and when the new console was released, they send you the XSX and return the X1. I even suggested shipping the new controllers and they would only need to send the headset, which would cut down cost and carbon footprint.
Disappointing F.O.V. don't you think? Shouldn't have to wait until the Quest 4 for a MUCH NEEDED upgrade to our field of view when other V.R. companies are telegraphing as now possible 220-240 degrees field of view- COME ON Meta- lift your act! If you can't manage expensive eye-tracking or headset haptics, at least a modest F.O.V. exspansion by another 15-20 degrees would, in my view, make this iterative headset with it's improvements- the most popular and best selling headset of all time!-probably even outclassing Apple Vision Pro's incredible but highly expensive offering! 110 F.O.V. please!
I have a quest 2 and a pc do you think I should get a quest 3 or get a pcvr headset
I use my Quest 2 for PC VR all the time either via AirLink or a Link cable, and I think it's a great PC VR headset. The Quest 3 with the pancake lenses and higher resolution display is going to be even better.
@@Maraksot78 I had several quest 2's and each one has severe issues with the quality of the lenses. I'm hoping that Meta improved their manufacturing process so that there is less variation in these new lenses and so that they are as clear as possible. I'm excited to see VR with true clarity.
a used quest pro is probably a better idea
@Blakostructr nah, the Quest 3 is a better bet. Quest pro has some upsides, but some of the things that the Quest 3 brings to the table are better.
@@beanos2287 The only thing better about it is the slightly better AR, and standalone performance, but if you're using it with a PC, that will be meaningless
No eye tracking is the only demerit I see. But by the time eye tracking got popular the product was already close to production ready. so I'm sure Q4 will have it and might release sooner. Also the Quest pro will get a massive upgrade too in between Q3 and Q4.
No local dimming is the biggest loss for me. I can't stand the black levels of LCD without it.
@@dtz1000 a you problem lol
@@jamesmoore4856 I envy people like you who are satisfied with rubbish.
I'm thinking if I should get the Quest 2 since it's cheaper or wait for the Quest 3 since it's way way better, I think I will wait.
I can get three second hand Quest 2 headsets for the price of one new Quest 3 at RRP. Quest 3 is a bit overpriced imo.
I’m not going to make a lot of use of the actual new hardware in the headset because I use my quest 2 as a cheaper wireless pcvr headset. Still very excited for the better comfort & improved lenses
Better comfort...remains to be seen. But then again I'd rather wear a crown of thorns than a stock quest 2 strap
@@jackfrosterton2530 I was more referring to the smaller size of the headset. I have a headset at home that will hopefully fit the quest 3
@@Business_Ape Mm. Well, its width might be the same as the q3 even if the front part is shorter.
I really hope they upgraded to a version of Android (64bit?) that lets you record more then 4GB videos without corruption.
Will you be able to wear your glasses with the quest3?
yes
OMG! Pancake lenses are awesome. I have a Pico 4 & a Quest Pro. Playstation dropped the ball with the lenses.
There's nothing they could do about it as OLED is not bright enough for pancake lenses. I'd rather have OLED with fresnel than crappy LCD with pancake anyway.
They should just put an nvme slot on it and let you buy the storage you want.
I'd be down with that, although a micro SD slot would be more practical. 😁
That charging port in the arms is plain stupid. If you turn that arm alot it will break over time that connection
Not if the port is stationary and the arm rotates around it. I don't know if that's what they're doing or not, but that's what I would do if I'd designed it.
Same weight and same FOV, I think i will skip quest 3
Yeah I mean its a cool headset for the other features but im not sure if its worth the upgrade from quest 2. Wait until quest 4 would be a smart move.
@@Dexterity_Boost For me, getting a new GPU will give a better upgrade.
@@iraklimgeladze5223 yeah true and the sweet pancake lenses just wish more fov, battery life even though it has 2x the power already and less weight.
I'd like less weight too, but at least it will be perceptually indistinguishable from less weight, moving the center of gravity further back.
Can't wait 2 years for Q4
Quest pro is already reselling new at around $550. Q2 is circa $200/300 through recent sales. I cant see Q3 going for the same price, therefore maybe its dead before it even gets to market lol?
No oled?
Mirco oled i think it what its called but they haven’t confirmed yet. Either way they also have a thing where it gives the same effect as oled if it is lcd again.

Same weight is such a disappointment. Most people cannot use Quest for long session. This is a problem.
It’s not a disappointment at all, headsets are going to be weighty still, you can’t expect that to change immediately, and the quest 3 has much better center of gravity meaning you will be able to do longer sessions
@@zenthous9568 yes, but it would've been better if less weight is applied to face. I'm sure there will be still fatique and discomfort issue, which will prevent mass adaption of VR with the current generation of quest. You know pico managed to come up with better weighted and lighter headset. A lot of people like the feel of pico better than quest for longer use as long as they get after market facial interface for their face shape. Now, that's better for work related usage, which is what Meta actually want people to use their headset for.
No FOV improvement - no buy
It will definitely go down around Christmas time so ima wait untill then
All sounds grate on paper my only issue is the starting price for the 128 GB version sure it's not that expensive. BUT I see to many people jumping on the hype train to buy it at 499. Halerious people don't consider the 256 GB version might be from 600 up to 1000 bucks just greed and marketing shenanigans 👎🤣

Likely the case. Although, a lot of people like to put those flags in their bio and stuff to seem hip, or supportive of the message, or whatever other nonsense.
Correct
I now play quest 2 about 2 hours a day. After taking it off, it looks like I have just been through a domestic violence.
Never heard that excuse before. Very creative!
Very disappointing. Pico 4 already have most of these( AR is not important for gaming) with much higher field of view and for more expensive price we don't even get eye tracking?? Now I understand why Meta lobbied for pico not to come to US. Bytedance would kill the meta. They should make Quest pro 600 dollar and sell us that rather than this cut down version.
One thing the PSVR isn't, stand alone. Big deal for many.
With Quest 3 everything is straightforward, everyone with Quest 2 + those with other headsets waiting for pre-order button 😂😅
I think there's quest 3 pro
Basura tres 🤣
buying vision pro , meta sucks , no hardware and software
You can't play games on a vision pro Goodluck
I just asked google and apple vision pro has only a 96hz refresh rate pathetic fot nearly $4000 after tax, not that i was in thr market for such an expensive device but 90hz is unacceptable. I cant believe that a $300 device beats apple vision pro at anything what a disgrace. The 72hz refresh rate made me sick on quest 1 thats one of the most important features of VR/XR
90hz is acceptable to me but what isn't is a 2 hour battery life on a 3500 dollars device. That's worse than the Quest 2.
Yeah but it's 4K oled per eye- Pretty amazing really- although very expensive.
