To add some more history, the inter period between the launch of the quest 1 to quest 2 was crazy, alot of people wanted the quest 1 but FB stopped production to get ready to sell the quest 2, so resellers were selling quest 1s for almost triple the rrp. I feel like those who only got into vr during the quest 2 really missed the early vr community and the fun and theories that were going on at the time, it feels like there was more innovation. Still happy to see more people in the community and enjoying the thing that many people have dedicated their life to
Yeah definitely i remember the time but for me i was unsure if i should get a rift s or wait for quest 2. There are lots i had to leave out of the vid because it would go forever. The hardest thing to cut was what happened between the DK2 and CV1. They built tonnes of controller prototypes and headset prototypes. Im sure there is lots more innovation in VR to come we will see if Apples headset lives up to the hype but unsure if the huge leaps will come from META.
@@shreeeze I do back that, im happy that the VR community is much larger now and people see the potential that VR has. Im not sure what was the cause of all this and I wish to not point fingers, but im still happy how the community how it is today I just miss some elements of how it used to be

No way it wasn't sarcastic, but it's like... all he got out of massive political fallout from a stupid impulse purchase was to double down on being a total asshole. i still remember the day my dad brought home a gear VR. and soon after started watching youtubers play on the oculus rift. it was such a dream to have tasted VR and see people enjoying it. i was beyond excited when i got my hands on the first oculus quest, i'd play it so much i'd get all sweaty from moving around so much. now with the quest 3 i without a doubt dub it one of my favorite pieces of gaming hardware
The DK1 and DK2 days were amazing. Almost entirely in the hands of optimistic enthusiasts, all of the content and experiences being made were extremely creative and experimental. There were so many tech demos that are better than almost everything out there in recent years. There were no controllers back then, but there were all sorts of third-party companies making awesome hand tracking in motion cap type stuff. A lot of it was so much better than what we have now, of course what we have now is very accessible and user friendly. There was nothing more exciting in gaming than Palmer Luckey and Oculus. Midnight releases of new consoles were cool and all, but this was like stepping into a new thing altogether, and it was enthusiasts and small time developers showing what was possible that attracted eventually the venture capital etc. Nothings are a bit more sterile, but it's still great to be able to play practically any game in VR, even if all the experiments are largely gone.
That was fantastic! I'm still using the CV1 so when I am able to upgrade it's going to be quite a jump in visuals. It's very exciting to see how quickly things are evolving
Thanks mate! Yeah CV1 is honestly still pretty good the designs of the headsets have gotten a lot better but honestly CV1 is goo enough for most things...

A single donation might steered entire vr industry downhill because of cancel culture. What a time to be alive... Actually let's see how quest 3 performs
I have a feeling quest 3 will be similar to everything we have gotten so far haha. Damn i just wish they woudl send the resolution as high as humanly possible !
The good enough passthrough in the quest 3 is a big difference for the casual users and opens possibility's for games! Quality overall is very good but indeed nothing special comparing to the more expensive headsets. Altough price vs quality they are the best in te market right now in my opinion !
The Gear VR, a few years ago, was my first VR experience. I used it with Virtual Desktop for any VR game that would take a gamepad or other form of joystick, it was great for Star Wars Squadrons and an early taste before I could nab myself an Oculus Quest. I think it's a very underrated headset, if you think outside the box

Wow! I never knew that was how the Quest line was made, it’s ABSOLUTELY amazing to see the DK2 and DK1 for the first time.
the one thing that made me fall in love with the quest two is just how much is capable. if you do something right, BOOM. you just did i great thing. people have found ways AND WAYS to make a quest two better. like playing pcvr wireless with index controllers. you can do SO MUCH with the quest two. it BLOWS me away.
Whos watching this quest 3 is out?

Thank you so much. I'm still on the OG Rift VC1 because I enjoy the light weight, behind-the-back tracking, PC Graphics and ASW.
Looks like the Quest Pro finally made inside-out tracking work and the Quest 3 is similar, just without face tracking. Hope the latency and compression artifacts are okay when using it as PCVR. I really wish I could just plug it straight in.
You can, but you must use a usb-c cable (preferably 3) to use it.
@@Ordlnary_Gamer I think maybe he's referring to be able to plug it straight into the GPU like a native pcvr headset does to avoid the compression and artifacts.
I loved this video my first headset was the quest 1 I was just a 12 year boy who saved his $400 and bought I fell in love now I’m almost 16 and I bought a pc just to play vr and I have a index, quest 2, and kat walk c. I’m now a vr enthusiast I really believe in the technology. Even though stand-alone is what got me into vr I do wish meta didn’t ditch the whole pcvr community I want more AAA titles but I understand why they did this. Thank you for the history in the beginning too I’m sure this video will make people appreciate vr and not see it as a silly metaverse that may never happen.
You're so young, yet you're such an enthusiast! I'm also a young enthusiast, I'm about a year older than you, almost 17. I'm not as lucky as you, though. I only have a GearVR, Oculus Go, and Quest 2. Still, I love vr. And I plan to get many more headsets. Nice to meet a fellow young enthusiast!
@@DiamondDepthYT not every I meet someone my age with such a passion for vr not to be people can see the potential only the gimmick happy to meet another enthusiast!
@@andrewrodriguez1483 how you get big money like dat?
Hey there, thanks for sharing your story about how you fell in love with VR! It was similar for me once i tried a rift s i was just hooked! It's awesome to see how much you've grown as a VR enthusiast, from your first Quest 1 to now owning an Index, Quest 2, and even a Kat Walk C i have always wondered if they are worth it ive never tried one! .
Thanks for the nice words about the video providing some historical context and helping people to appreciate VR more. I thought it was important to understand where VR came from in order to better appreciate where it's going.
And while it's true that Meta's focus on standalone VR may have left some PCVR enthusiasts feeling left out, it's important to remember that the goal is to make VR more accessible to everyone. With continued innovation and development, I'm sure we'll see amazing experiences and games on all platforms. I wish they would make a headset powerful enough to play VR games with a full operating systems like there holocake 2 prototype.
Anyway, keep on enjoying VR and exploring all the incredible possibilities it has to offer!
@@josalt thank you for your response and time it means a lot
Fun fact! At 43:48, you can actually get this old menu back by using the Oculus Link to your computer. "This is the default menu for pcvr"

Why are the feet blurred 31:45😂
Haha i thought it would be funny
@@josalt you ahould unblur them i think it would be a very good idea and many people would be very very happy with that delicious i mean decision
The picture from the dk1 shows a lot of progression off the original headsets, weird to see how far it went in so little time then the internal development taking another like 2 decades to match
I am amazed. How did you do this? How long to edit? It’s been my dream to own a quest 2 and you have all of them? Amazing video, one of the best I’ve seen. Don’t give up man, your going places.
Hey! I did it everyday for 2 months constantly filming then edited it all at the end. Was a massive challenge but super satisfying to post! Im sure one day you will have a quest 2! Thanks for the nice words !
2 MONTHS? That is so long! That is dedication. Thanks I’ll try to get one, I’m saving up but all I have is $30 so it might take a while.
@@SoupieVR. You should wait for Meta quest 3 the successor of Quest 2.
it’s going to come 6 months October 2023 according to the leaker. So please save up for meta quest 3 if it’s came out.
So I don’t recommended buy meta quest 2 in 2023 because Quest 3 on its way
I hope this helps you.

can I add you on oculus when your getting meta quest 3 :)
I remember my Oculus Development Kit 1.
Loved showing people roller coaster demos and things.
Among the Sleep use to have a VR mode and was crazy with it.
Now I own a bunch of VR Equipment.
update for quest 3?
This UA-camr is so underrated
Amazing documentary
Thank you!
Watching while cleaning up my quest 2 too sell, hurts me letting go of this man.
The times before the Quest 2 were so amazing
@@shreeeze I do back that, im happy that the VR community is much larger now and people see the potential that VR has. But that being said I feel like the whole dynamic of the community has changed, it feels personally more toxic and theres less innovation, speculation and hope for VR as a whole. Im not sure what was the cause of all this and I wish to not point fingers, but im still happy how the community how it is today I just miss some elements of how it used to be
I own the Oculus Rift and it’s great, the only downside and reason I replaced it was because it was old and was restricting the amount of games I could play
0:05 Is that tuscany
Yes
oh wow, republique vr looks great! sure its a little rough around the edges (due to being on a mobile headset) but still the asthetic is STRONG! so well done! Amazing! a well cobbled chunk of polygons looks way better than a infinitely poly dense flat world
must have been expensive but a good video definitely a underated creator
I got them 2nd had and did a few trades but loved making the video. Any excuse to buy more VR headsets... haha and thanks for the kind words!!

Fantastic video! I actually didn't know Facebook acquired Oculus that early on 🤯 I've worked for a few VR experience venues since 2017 and thought I had a pretty good knowledge 😂 thanks for the great video 🙏
ok but why did you set up an entire section around absolutely glazing a war profiteer? he brags about taking weapons contracts on his twitter. no matter how seriously you take his political fundings, he's far from what i'd call a "genuinely awesome guy". my jaw dropped dude
Plus his constant and not insignificant donations to republician politicians. One of those smarmy techbros we could really do without and certainly not awesome.
Glad it wasn't just me, what left me gobsmacked was the interview where he discussed choosing between defense, a nonprofit private prison company, or getting into petroleum based food products to combat obesity. No way it wasn't sarcastic, but it's like... all he got out of massive political fallout from a stupid impulse purchase was to double down on being a total asshole. More than war profiteer, human suffering and surveillance profiteer.
Good thing we can skip over it...
Thank you for this video, the quality was perfect, the background subtle music is amazingly immersive, the documentation is very interesting. Overall 10/10 video!
The rift s the mic is broken
i still remember the day my dad brought home a gear VR. and soon after started watching youtubers play on the oculus rift. it was such a dream to have tasted VR and see people enjoying it. i was beyond excited when i got my hands on the first oculus quest, i'd play it so much i'd get all sweaty from moving around so much. now with the quest 3 i without a doubt dub it one of my favorite pieces of gaming hardware
Quest 1 still the best, the one I have so you know it’s true
cant argue with that
OLED and full IPD adjustment ftw
Palmer luckey boosted the vr thoughts and now he has created a headset that explodes when you die in game
"Palmer seems like a genuinly awesome guy"
Ah, you're one of those people.
Yikes.
And you are an even worse person

real.
JOSALT MOVIE
I mean basically haha
That was fantastic! I'm still using the CV1 so when I am able to upgrade it's going to be quite a jump in visuals. It's very exciting to see how quickly things are evolving
Thanks mate! Yeah CV1 is honestly still pretty good the designs of the headsets have gotten a lot better but honestly CV1 is goo enough for most things...
When you upgrade, don't get rid of your CV1! You can use it for full body tracking!
Also waiting for the Quest 3? Seems to be the one to get.

Yeah and I wonder why 😂
I started off with a cv1 and Rift S almost 4 years ago now and have I'd say 3000hrs+ in vr, it certainly has evolved a lot since then!
Yeah its insane the evolution! Damn i wish oculus still made PC VR headsets haha
do you want salt

DK1 was my first good VR experience, then CV1, then Rift S (also the first headset that was mine, DK1 and CV1 I used at the local sim racing center, quite often). Now I have a PICO 4, considering the Q3.. I like the PICO but the Oculus (now Meta 🥲) interface is just better...
The oculus go menu is so nostalgic.

The Gear VR, a few years ago, was my first VR experience. I used it with Virtual Desktop for any VR game that would take a gamepad or other form of joystick, it was great for Star Wars Squadrons and an early taste before I could nab myself an Oculus Quest. I think it's a very underrated headset, if you think outside the box
i thought this would just be tech specs comparisons, but wow! you've really impressed me with all this history and research!
