It wasnt just his skills and athletic ability. He was a very clever player, quick to react and when he got older and lost some of his speed he was able to transition into a world class mid field player as well as All Black captain. A true All Black legend.
100% if he played his whole career in the midfield I think he would have been the best 12/13 ever against stiff opposition Horan little BOD etc. I still have him at 12 in my all time ABs team
Played at another level as test captain - was the best player on the field, others played centre for longer, but those couple of years before he retired from test rugby while he was captain he was the best player around.

Very strong, that if Tana was 3 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier, he would have been harder to stop. Not to mention the skills. Tana was 6'2 100kgs pretty much the standard for centre these days. I can't think of any decent centres running around at 110kgs or heavier specially at an international level..
What a great player! When you talk about great AB wings and centers, at first his name doesn't spring to mind as readily as a few (and I mean a very few!) others but if you were to pick a team for an absolute must win game....he'd be one of the first names selected!
Great player and equally great as a bloke. Belted Chris masoe in 06 with a random ladies handbag while having late night drinks in chch. Masoe was causing a ruckus with another bar patron and tana shut him down. The lady got over 20 grand in auction when she sold the bag online
Tana is when a Predator Warrior gets tired of hunting commandos and wants a new challenge. He literally looks like he's from a different time, place, or even planet.

he said himself that he was far too sluggish when he showed up to his first abs training at 110 and had to drop because he wasn't nimble enough

The PS2 game ESPN Rugby back in 2000 had the Umaga era NZ squad. Umaga was awesome to control as a player. Ran holes through teams.
