I may stand corrected if someone knows of a country music album with that label, but I have never seen one. The country music I grew up with didn't have to include a lot of cursing. They did every now and then, and they also did bad things sometimes. Country music was not always rosy or pretty; it was real. I'm more of a rock and metal guy checking out Sturgill after listen to him on the Joe Rogan podcast, but even coming from a completley diffrent genre its easy to see that guitarist knows his craft. Clean and simple playing, adding some flair when needed but always supporting Sturgill and the song.
@Charlie : I agree 100%. I love these songs, I love Sturgill, but the Tele and the drums are outstanding. Oh yeah, the bass line too. But the electric guitarist is the hell of a great player. Seems so easy, not a demonstration of guitar but each note is perfect. So great!
Also Willie Nelson smokes little weed. My uncle past away a month ago. We would lesson to blue sky's up in Alaska smoking 3 to 4 bowls and have Irish whiskey.
Just my opinion but seems as cliche as a line from a florida georiga line song.. I love this guys music but I think that was a bone he threw to Nashville to get a few dollars. Everybody has to eat

wheelmanstan There's a self consciousness to this song that is infectious. It is clearly not of the same ilk as the songs you would hear on new country radio mainly because of that self awareness. But sure, it's not his best song, still it's fun and very quotable. This whole album is a lot more fun than MMSICM but it's also not as good. Partly because he isn't going as much for that party country thing (there's certainly less jokes), and partly because he's confident enough to reach a little deeper inside. Either way they're both good albums. I know this song bothered him for some time because he had problems with it, both internally and with how others perceived it.. as you say. But an artist isn't the final arbiter of their work... neither am I but still... that opening line lets you know you're about to have fun right away and to me... that's a good thing.
thatguy On the new album he has a song that starts: "Woke up today and decided to kill my ego, cause it never done me no good no how." - that's a much more a cliche line where I come from but I suppose what is and is not cliche is a matter of the culture you're used to. That opening line, to me, just lets me know I'm about to have some unpretentious fun. The kind of fun I'd have listening to Hank Williams Sr. or Lefty Frizel.
This guy reminds me of old Waylon Jennings. Outlaw country. Glad to see there is still some good country out there. The radio sure as hell don’t play it anymore!

+Matt Gustavson Man, the current plays everything haha. Love that people like this can get played on there, instead of having the same 3 Luke Bryan, 2 Sam Hunt, and 2 Jason Aldean songs play on repeat. I saw Sam Hunt at a country festival and he had "We Can't Stop" by Miley Cyrus playing. At a friken country festival. I just went back to the camp site and drank beer. Sorry, rant over.
If you're selling music for money then you're commercial. Simpson last year signed with a major label. I get what you're saying but you don't hear a lot of Jamey Johnson on the radio, so I don't know how you consider him "commercial". And Stapleton has been making Americana music for a long time. Great stuff with the Steeldrivers. I love the stuff I hear from Simpson and he might be the best of the three, but why limit yourself to just one artist or try to crown one the "king"? You're missing the point of the song...if you want it you can have the crown. What is country prowess anyway lol?
Every band member has their own subtle way of showing their satisfaction with what is happening. Video editor did an amazing job of highlighting those and other key moments. 10/10
I'm a metal fan. I listen to all the crazy extreme stuff like Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower. But I aint going to deny this man's talent and ability to play some good ol' shit-kicking COUNTRY music. Not that "Trucks, beer, Gurl" pop bro country horseshit....actual working, blue-collared, down 'n dirty everyday man Country that make you feel alive and and not want to slit your own throat. Hails to this man bringing back the sound of 70's Rebel Country.
+Sean Wright I'm a big death metal fan (Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, etc.) and this is the only country I've heard in the past 10 years that I've actually liked. I'm right there with you, man.
+Sean Wright Metal fan here too. This is one of the few albums (along with Never Mind the Bollocks... and a couple Ben Folds records) that has fully eclipsed my metal listening for days at a time. It's a weird life.
Surprised to see so many guys here who sport the Devil Horns. I listening Woods of Ypres, Type O Negative, Gorgoroth, Motorhead, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Bloodbath, Katatonia... Etc. But god damn I love me some outlaw country and southern rock. I have my father to thank for that, grew up listening to it. I mean, hell I even listen to some rap, specifically horrocore like Lo Key, Twiztid, Brotha Lynch Hung, Kung Fu Vampire, Donnie Menace and the like. There is good music in every genre, it's just the shitty music is what hits the mainstream shelves and gets played on the radio.
I just came here to rewatch this after listening to the album version. I was thinking, "Isn't this song supposed to be a faster tempo?" So much better this way.
It's 4am and I'm sitting in my office with my pedal steel and my tele getting drunk. Pickin and grinning. Country ain't dead!!! It just isn't on the radio.
Man, believe me, although I'm a Czech, I'm American in my heart. And i mean american. Not LA or NY poser but a real bleeding red and blue American. Just you wait. I'll have my ranch. God bless America and god bless true Americans living the good old American way.
"I drive a Bronco" and now lord if i could just get record deal, i might not have to worry about my next meal, but i still be trying to figure out.. "What the fuck rhymes with Bronco" Another excellent line. His best line though is from ( turtles all the way down ) "Reptile Aliens made of light..cut you open and pull out all your Pain" Now Thats Outlaw country. First time i heard it i knew he was not Bullshit pop-Country like everyone on the radio. Today's country is Garbage example = Sturgill was up for album of the year a few years ago against adele,Beyonce and few others he lost of course but when it came time for the country music awards... He didn't even get 1 nomination. (That tells you all you need to know)
I find so much joy in this raw live version of these two songs...my favorite by far. I can feel it in my soul. The upbeat enthusiasm makes me sing every word.
The Bronco line's incredibly well crafted, as is the whole song-"call me King Turd up here on Shit Mountain" is a great hook, "watchin' Andy & ol' Boss Hog" snatches your brain back home & then there's "sometimes I feel like cuttin' a vein, just watchin' it bleed"!!! Sturgill Simpson's fucking Legendary!
Love the guitar player (Adam Davis) grinning & nodding to the bass player! They know it’s sounding badass & even though the bass & drummer aren’t miked up, they are still singing along! 🤠 The transition into the second song is SMOOOOTH!!!
And here I thought Jamey Johnson was the only guy left still making real country music. This dude is the real deal. With guys like Sturgill and Jamey, real country music will never die.
the other person that replied to you in this comment is trying to impersonate Sturgill Simpson if you go to his channel he has 3 subscribers and no videos
This is by far the best country music singer since the outlaws in country. This is real music, the guys got an amazing talent. Play and sing what you feel….it’s the way music is meant to be. God bless
j77 he teaches guitar in Nashville and still plays with other artists some. I think Sturgill should have kept him. Laur was awesome too. He plays with Drivin and Cryin now. Going to see them next month !
Jesus H Christ! Where have I been!? This is the country I love but though was dead. I am a huge Jamey Johnson fan and figured he was one of the last true country singers. I am very happy to know I was wrong. Thank you for your brand of country Sturgill! We sorely need you.
My point is I dont even listen to country at all but Simpson has a whole different thing going on that even I can totally appreciate his talent and different approach.
"I'm still fucken trying to figure out what rhymes with Bronco". I was laughing so hard at that line i had to pause the song. It was my first time hearing it after all. I'm a country radio convert. This is the best country music ever!!!!
+MarzMiller 13 mpg hahaha Some of my best memories are driving a bronco II around listneing to Check Your Head on cassette, I thank my father for that.
+jimmy john I was brought home from the hospital in a Bronco II, so I can't knock it. Conveniently enough for my current Bush I-era project car, 'Volvo' substitutes in quite nicely.
Real country at its finest Tyler childers and colter wall are very good upcoming musicians as well. I'm glad there are still true country artists out there
As a farm kid from Kansas, and Us Army Infantry vet...I settled and raised my kids in the birthplace of Texas(Gonzales). Cool history -horrible place to raise kids... Sturgill is the best artist in the country scene these days. I'm retired now and drive an 18 wheeler across this great nation. Closest band to old school I've heard from the country scene in a minute.
@@kingscotimus well, my comment says guitarist, not singer. Sturgill isn’t playing lead, he’s playing rhythm. No one refers to the rhythm as ‘the guitarists’. I figured actual musicians would know who I’m talking about. Also no, I play drums, I’m not a musician as my username would convey.
His smile looking back.. it’s my fav part. Seen him with Willie and family few years ago, had no clue who he was, and man one of the best live voices I’ve ever seen!! Went home n this was first song I found
With the greatest respect to those who say this incredible talent is more "merle" than "Waylon I think it's not that he looks and sounds like 70s Waylon it's that he has the edge and obvious musical hunger and integrity. As Waylon and Willie once sang "he lives what he writes and writes what he lives ". No search or creation of image he just is . Before the grammy noms I had never heard of this guy. New Country has been destined for a major shakeup and with Jamey Johnson, CHRIS Stapleton and esp Simpson a change is coming. ....thank God!! Regardless of who he is compared to, he is Country music's brightest hope in years. His music has guts and he's already proved he's here to stay.
He sounds more like Waylon but writes more like Merle and has this maverick nomenclature similar to Cash. Kinda like a less flamboyant, less racist Coe.
Dont forget when he won his Grammy for country album of the year they purposely left it off of TV. I bet 100$ if Kane Browns bitch ass would of won they would of televised the award. Pathetic
The CMA's are a joke. The thing I loved is Sturgill played a free show in the parking lot and after Chris Stapleton received his rewards he snubbed the rest of the show and went outside to play with Sturgill.
I freely admit that I know next to nothing about country but holy crap this had some real musical chops and undeniable fire. Also, hilarious, dark and wry lyrics.
I appreciate the genuineness and authenticity of this exceptional artist. I wish the whole world knew him, just like John Prine. I pray Sturgill gets his music out and abroad before he is no longer walking on this earth. Too many greats are appreciated after they are gone. Long live the exceptionally empathetic, and those that have a gift of painting pictures with their beautiful insight and lexicon🤟🏽👍🏽
kyle williams this is not just country. The lyrical content is not country and he doesn't just play country. There's rock blues funk, not just straight country
Yall have no idea how happy it makes me to see Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed's boy all grown up and carrying on the family tradition. I'm proud of you boy!

I saw Sam Hunt at a country festival and he had "We Can't Stop" by Miley Cyrus playing. At a friken country festival. I just went back to the camp site and drank beer. Sorry, rant over.
"Well they call me king turd up here on shit mountain, if you want it you can have the crown" .... pretty much sums up my life
Yeaaaaa brother,,😅
That guitarist is a fucking legend this guy knows what's up more than anyone I've seen recently
Dude is seeing the music
Discovered this is 2020. Puts a smile on this Texas boys face!
Just listened to this the first time a week ago.listen to sterg kick ass
Best by far in years
Charley Crockett should put an even bigger smile on your face.
2019 for me. How's going I'm Cut & Shoot, Texas🙋♂️
man.... I've been in the dark. I stopped listening to country 15 years ago but Chris Stapleton and now this guy is bringing me back. awesome.
Same here. Jamey Johnson brought me back too. 3 best in my opinion.
Don't miss Cody Jinks!
jamey johnson is commercialized country. its okay to like whoever you like. but stapleton or johnson have nowhere near the country prowess of simpson.
I liked early Eric church but sturgill and Chris are it
If you're selling music for money then you're commercial.
I love that nonchalant guitar player playing some badass licks
He knows he sounds dope as fuck and isn't even bothered by it at all.
He’s fucking KILLING IT!
He adds so much to the performance his personality is super funny in a good way
His dynamics are flawless, never too loud but always loud enough. Softens during his runs at the perfect time.
Every band member has their own subtle way of showing their satisfaction with what is happening. Video editor did an amazing job of highlighting those and other key moments. 10/10
Ty for pointing this out
I'm a metal fan.
+Sean Wright AMEN BROTHA!!!couldn't a said it better myself!!!!!!!! LONG live the Outlaws!
Damn right
I'm gettin pretty tired.. of pulling up UA-cam to listen to this. Definitely supreme to the album version
I feel ya on that man.
♥️
I just came here to rewatch this after listening to the album version. I was thinking, "Isn't this song supposed to be a faster tempo?" So much better this way.
It's 4am and I'm sitting in my office with my pedal steel and my tele getting drunk. Pickin and grinning. Country ain't dead!!! It just isn't on the radio.
The guitar players expressions are exactly the feeling you have when you walk into a 7/11 high for the first time. And I love it!
Lmfao
Accurate
🤣 I was waiting for somebody else to notice him

@@aa134368 🤣🤣😂🤣
Man, believe me, although I'm a Czech, I'm American in my heart. And i mean american. Not LA or NY poser but a real bleeding red and blue American. Just you wait. I'll have my ranch. God bless America and god bless true Americans living the good old American way.
“If the devil shows up with a better deal this old souls going down”
That’s a great line
As is the one that follows: “They call me King Turd up here on shit mountains, but fuck it you can have the crown”
Man that's messed up. I read your comment as he sang it. Wtf.
"I drive a Bronco" and now lord if i could just get record deal, i might not have to worry about my next meal, but i still be trying to figure out..
"What the fuck rhymes with Bronco"
Another excellent line.
His best line though is from
( turtles all the way down )
"Reptile Aliens made of light..cut you open and pull out all your Pain"
Now Thats Outlaw country.
(That tells you all you need to know)
I like “so broke I can’t pay attention”
@@CaptFreedompants what an underrated line
Sturgill and band: hold my beer
Walls:.. I got you bro
livingsurflife underrated comment lmaoooooo
Zach Siebs first thing that popped in my head haha
Those are empty cans. They come in stacked on pallets in a warehouse. Next they get filled and boxed . Then drank !
This is my fav iteration of 'hold my beer' lol
This is my best friends comment wtf
country fans: real country music died with Waylon
Sturgill: Hold my weed and pills
Hold my psychedelics. Take some enjoy life play. Life is about play. Love Is life life is love fund love and you be happy.
Sturgill: Actually, don’t hold those, I want those.
@@paulcrisafi4415 accurate
Alan Jackson kept it hanging in by a thread for a while though. IMO
👍🏻
I find so much joy in this raw live version of these two songs...my favorite by far. I can feel it in my soul. The upbeat enthusiasm makes me sing every word.
Let me guess. Yer a girl right,
Kentucky has it's own sound. Sturgill, Tyler, chris are keeping Kentucky music top of heap
Hell yes..Love outlaw country..Some others in the genre- Jinks, Bingham, Dan Baird, allman betts band, drive by truckers, steel woods..
Tyler is awesome good road music to drive to (white house road)
watch out for them kentucky boys
Pause at 4:42 for perhaps one of the greatest guitar faces.
yes yes it is!
Yes! So funny..
ha!!!! I laughed out loud when I saw that face...bro is feeling it.
+neverender888 HAHAHAHHAA
+neverender888 briliant!
True Masters of there art right here
This is the song that sold me on Sturgill, and Adam Davis is who really sold me on this song. He just looked like he was really feeling the groove.
And here I thought Jamey Johnson was the only guy left still making real country music. This dude is the real deal. With guys like Sturgill and Jamey, real country music will never die.
That bass groove at the transition gets my head bobbing every time!
This transition man... So good
Yup
Still love this in 2024
This guy music is saving my life. Thanks Stergil
Bring on that Real country well real music Stergial
I keep coming back to this. One of the best country sets ever
Absolutely I watch this probably 4 times a week. Along with many other songs lol
Are there any other videos from this brewery performance?
That opening line:
“Waylon, is that you?”
Absolutely loved Sturgill roasting the CMAs this year. This train is the one to be on!
This is honky tonk. Sounds great. I’m back after a year.
Now this is country music.
Damn straight!
Some days you just blast off.. some days you just smoke. :-)
damn right
T Moody. A-MEN
did he say they call me king turd up here on sh mountain
The Lead Guitarist is sublime and so beautifully restrained…. An absolute master class👏👏👏👏
the other person that replied to you in this comment is trying to impersonate Sturgill Simpson
if you go to his channel he has 3 subscribers and no videos
This is by far the best country music singer since the outlaws in country. This is real music, the guys got an amazing talent. Play and sing what you feel….it’s the way music is meant to be. God bless
13, just found this song and its amazing
You are on the right track!
Jesus, thank you for keeping the spirit of Waylon alive and kickin ass in the form of Sturgill Simpson!
George Jones is coming through Jason James.
Amen🙏🙏🙏
Sturgill: the love child of Waymore and Possum....
Sound and Fury brought me here... Not even a "Country person" BUT, Wow what talent!! Love this guy/band!
Imagine the lack of Fs it took to hand in that record.
The lead guitar player is the happiest person I have ever seen. Love his facial expressions.
Brian Sanders He was replaced by Laur Joamets not too long after this. Laur is gone now too. Sturgill stripped down the band this year.
j77 he teaches guitar in Nashville and still plays with other artists some. I think Sturgill should have kept him. Laur was awesome too. He plays with Drivin and Cryin now. Going to see them next month !
Brian Sanders it’s the pills dude, it’s the pills 💊
He's definitely feeling the groove
What's his name? I've been watching this for years and he still cracks me up
So much better than the album versions . This is awesome.
Thankfully Sturgill and Chris Stapleton have brought back "TRUE" country. Waylon would be proud !
Tyler Childers
Kentucky says “You’re welcome”
Exactly
dead south and colter wall are decent as well. Canadian but good
Dale Phillips damn just decent I think colter wall is the best out right now, but that’s just my opinion
The facial expressions of the guy on the guitar are great!
Dustin Romero i.imgur.com/5VajPN8.png
Jesus H Christ! Where have I been!? This is the country I love but though was dead. I am a huge Jamey Johnson fan and figured he was one of the last true country singers. I am very happy to know I was wrong.
Thank you for your brand of country Sturgill! We sorely need you.
+ballzack57 - Do you know about Dale Watson? Check him out.
+ballzack57 Check out Whitey Morgan and Chris Stapleton. If you have not heard them, I think you will like them.
+don guyton Chris Stapleton is awesome! Thank you for the tip.
+ballzack57 It's still alive brother! Check out Justin Townes Earle. Steve Earle's son. Guys like him and Sturgill are keeping country alive.
Sturgill is the Daniel Day Lewis of music. You won’t ever catch him half assing his art
True. He’s the Michael Jordan of being the Daniel Day Lewis of country music.
won't *never
I've never thought about it like that, but you are correct
Progressive rock guy here...this guy is great.
Progressive Rock?
My point is I dont even listen to country at all but Simpson has a whole different thing going on that even I can totally appreciate his talent and different approach.
Well we need more outlaws then because I am a fanboy...lol
Nico Misuraca This what they call COUNTRY.
"I'm still fucken trying to figure out what rhymes with Bronco". I was laughing so hard at that line i had to pause the song. It was my first time hearing it after all. I'm a country radio convert. This is the best country music ever!!!!
Well I thought I was the only one who thought that was funny Bronco I was really laughing too 🌹
@2:00"... But I'd still be trying to figure out what the fuck rhymes with Bronco."
I love that line... maybe because I drive a bronco too
+MarzMiller hahahaha I nearly pissed myself.
+MarzMiller 13 mpg hahaha
Some of my best memories are driving a bronco II around listneing to Check Your Head on cassette, I thank my father for that.
+MarzMiller WHATS A < BRONCO TOO > ????
Martin Parmer
My mistake. I drive a bronco, also.
+jimmy john I was brought home from the hospital in a Bronco II, so I can't knock it.
Conveniently enough for my current Bush I-era project car, 'Volvo' substitutes in quite nicely.
I still can’t get over the transition between song’s absolutely beautiful
For anyone interested, the guitar player is Adam Davis. He's awesome.
He’s so awesome :) love these guys. What a gift!
Everybody notice everybody moving lately
Real country at its finest
Tyler childers and colter wall are very good upcoming musicians as well. I'm glad there are still true country artists out there
That transition between the two songs is slicker'n apple butter...
Closest band to old school I've heard from the country scene in a minute.
please dont doxx yourself
No one is enjoying that gig as much as the guitarist.
That shit-eating grin is legit inspiration. ✌️❤️🎶
They are two guitar players. Which one are you talking about? You are obviously not a musician.
Went home n this was first song I found
@kingscotimus
And you obviously aren't a people person
Haters gonna hate.
Best line...
“And I'm tired of y'all playing dress up and trying to sing them old country songs”
“Are you sure Hank done it this way?”
Tired of takin blame when I ain’t doin nothin wrong
"The only one that can hold me down is inside my head" my fave
real talk from a real country singer.
Hello Fellow Stein LOL
10 years later and im watching this every other week man
SAME.
Thanks!
How sturgil isn't being played 24-7 on EVERY DAMN station. This dude and his band got their shit together
I'd love to hear him and Chris team up. Chris is one of those who could sing the dictionary and sound amazing
Pathetic
I like Shooter Jennings also
Chris Stapleton is a yankee loving POS.@@miconis123
He was just snubbed by the CMA's but was nominated for a Grammy. I love this guy's music.
Josh Piccolo he busked outside the CMAs once lmao
I can't believe he was nominated. Those dip shits only like pop stars.
Also folded flag kinda burns CMT and the CMA's, he dont give a shit!
The CMA's are a joke. The thing I loved is Sturgill played a free show in the parking lot and after Chris Stapleton received his rewards he snubbed the rest of the show and went outside to play with Sturgill.
My favorite singer EVER!!! DAMN!!!! THE NEW KING OF COUNTY 🎉
I freely admit that I know next to nothing about country but holy crap this had some real musical chops and undeniable fire. Also, hilarious, dark and wry lyrics.
That transition between songs man... tight AF.
The transition between is GOLD
This is some of the only modern country that we can consider "real".
Holy shit those first few lines had me.
Thanks joe rogan this guys is really good
Ryan Duff well I been spending all my money on weed and pills
That transition ripped my spine straight out of my body! Hope Sturgill gets back to 100% soon!
Sturgill if they aren't i can guarantee you 100% you got a die hard fan right here ❤
Sturgill Simpson this is the best performance I have seen you do . You need to get that guitar player back !
Idk what's more impressive, how he sets that Telecaster on fire or the fact that he built that guitar from scratch with his own hands!!
Why the hell ain’t I heard this before today???? This is awesome!!!
mre great sturgill even better ua-cam.com/video/T610KFOSNHw/v-deo.html
Wylon Jennings is a singing through that young man
Dutch Resistance
No. You just like this guy the same as you liked Waylon.
Dutch Resistance he’s making his on path
I was thinking Hank Jr.
You need to check out Chance Howland
Waylon is my no.1 and Haggard is my no.2 Jerry reed is my no.3.. hank jr. is my no.4
Willie Nelson and Johnny paycheck are fighting for my no.5
I appreciate the genuineness and authenticity of this exceptional artist.
Thank you Sturgill! Bringin country back to where it should be!
kyle williams this is not just country. The lyrical content is not country and he doesn't just play country. There's rock blues funk, not just straight country
What can one say? Lou Reed absolutely amazing ,,I'm 68 grew up with his music ,,,lived it!
Yall have no idea how happy it makes me to see Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed's boy all grown up and carrying on the family tradition. I'm proud of you boy!
unfortunately never going to be another Waylon. But Sturgill is great.
I just found this. Thank God real country with a great voice!!!!!! This country girl needed this😊
Just discovered these guys from watching Yellowstone. Their awesome and they should be more famous. This is real music. Way different than the crap you hear on country radio today this reminds me of the 80’s when I used to go to the Smokey country music bars and drink some beers and take some shots. Man I miss those days. Thanks guys you made my day
Yellowstone sent me here as well... love this band, reminds me of a modern day Johnny Cash.
Keep returning to this, makes me smile, great singing and playing, love it .
Just found Sturgill Simpson and I love his music.
Just found him this week...
This guy is the new Waylon. Everyone I play his music around thinks he sounds like Waylon. Sturgill SERIOUSLY needs more popularity. This guy is AWESOME.
Branson Mathess he was on Saturday Night Live and I said holy crap there's a Waylon Jennings
Best version of these two songs he’s done imo. Guy on the tele literally crushes it.
Definitely. Damn Sturg and his restlessness. He’s had two world class bands and scrapped them both. Still love him though!
Holy cow Derik and Christina 36 million views!!!🎉 always dug this session being a Sturgill fan 😊
