Parents divorced when I was 4. My dad gave my mom a chance to be in our lives, she chose not to. But our dad, he raised me & my sister by himself he got some help every now & then, no child support. Took us to & from school, whatever school activities that schools was doing he was there. He even had to work nights for a few years, something that he really didn't want to do but did it. Sad to say we grew up without a mom and times were tough, but we pulled through because of him. I love you dad.

Same here man, my dad raised us both alone mom was never around till he was bedridden. Worked every single day until the cancer overwhelmed him. Wish I had've gotten to spend more time with him while he was around. This years 10 years since he passed in July, fighting back the tears writing this as a grown ass man. Cherish every day like you may not have a tomorrow.

Working 7-12’s as a pipe fitter, or 7-13’s as a foreman on turnaround in refineries and chemical plants all over the country was normal 8 months out of the year for me. Song reminds me so much of my baby brother. He had his first child at 16, and immediately got a job on a shrimp boat to provide for his new family. On his 17th birthday, our father signed for him to enlist into the Marine Corps. He did three tours in Iraq, and was even wounded in fallujah. After the service he got a job offshore drilling, and worked countless hours every week to build a comfortable civilian life for his family. I watched as he deteriorated when he got sick. He beat it, and went right back to work to continue to provide. He overcame so much in life only to be hit by a stray bullet at a gas station half a mile from our fathers house in 2014. Rest in Paradise baby bro u were double the man anyone I know could ever be in half the time! You were always able to keep the wolves away. I’m so proud to be your big brother. Miss you so much man.

There should be more people like your brother, there are many people who lack the strength or motivation to go ahead and fight, especially to fight for the family, without it and without someone to guide them, the children get lost along the way. My dad raised me and my siblings in Louisiana while fighting my mom’s addiction. He worked himself to the bone until his blue collar job cost him nearly everything. He was injured so bad he was permanently disabled. We fought like hell through homelessness and hardship till that settlement came and we moved up north a ways. He passed 5 years ago and he is still the strongest man I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing.

ADANAC Sadly alot of people don't ever realize this. Most kids without a father growing up were told that there father leftt. That isn't even remotely true. The majority were forced out of their homes by government, which got going from their wife. Sadly the kids are brought up believing falsehoods. They don't know there dad was providing for them since they were born, and after the divorce. The old days were different, but now you're supposed to take certain things for granted, while propping up mediocre behavior. Nowadays just being a mother deems you the right to claim yourself a great, or, good one. As a father if you don't do half of the inside work,( as well as all the outside work he was already doing) then he is somehow lazy, or terrible. As Rodney Dangerfield always said "No respect I tell ya, no respect". No wonder marriage rates are plummeting.
Good for you for realizing that though. It most certaintly is something all fathers hope their kids will realize someday. Be grateful for knowing that truth.

It doesn't have to be this way. We have all been deceived by an illusion that life for the majority is always a struggle. This is so far from the truth yet we accept that we have to work for some corporation and we accept what they want to pay. Their share holder dividends should be a huge clue to the amount of money they make off the poor they give bread crumbs to for their blood and tears. This can change. Start talking about it. The more we bring awareness out, the faster things will change. Tgere is enough resources in this world to take care of double the population in excess of having too much.

Dad worked, but only had one job except when he picked up projects, and I am grateful to him for showing me what a man really is, but not holding three jobs like some neighbors did so their wives could have fancy furniture and get their hair done every week at a salon (and grateful to my mom for not pushing him to do that or demanding it).

I heard this song when I was homeless; lost my house and job while trying to help my own sister. Resulted in a depression that even two civil wars couldn't do. Hearing this song while getting some rest behind a random garage made me realize what others (grandpa) have sacrificed for me and got my ass right back in gear. I was still hurting but I went to therapy, got into business school, met the love of my life and now again listening to this song with my son and daughter. Thank you sir.

My dad busted his ass for years working as a heavy equipment operator on the pipeline, always trying to provide for my mom and siblings and myself. I remember hardly seeing him at all as a kid growing up, and man I missed him like crazy. I was at work one day and got phone call from my momma saying my dad got hurt at work and it wasn’t good. Unfortunately he died as a result of being burned to death from a pipeline explosion. That day changed me forever. I miss my dad every damn day! Make sure to tell your loved ones that you love them, as we never know when our number is up.

Work in a factory to provide what i acn for them. Somethin about this song has truly made me understand how much he sacrificed to give me and my brothers and I a good childhood. I never got to tell him thank you. He never got to meet his grand children. I miss him everyday, to this day. I wish i was mature anough to realize then and to say thank you to him. But im sayin it here. Thank you dad. R.i.P. 😢 i love you.

This song reminds me of my father. Waking up at 4 30 am, driving almost 4 hours every day to go to a factory assembly line. Punching in and out, thankful for dinner ready at 7 pm. In bed by 9. For years he did this, for us 3 kids, and his high school sweetheart.
Never did I hear a word of complaint. But I felt the calluses on his hands. I heard the exhaustion in his voice as he sang me to sleep to the tune of songs like If I had a hammer, all the leaves are brown, and paperback writer.
As a child I didn't know the metaphor of this song, keep the wolves away. Now as a father, I understand. My hands are rough. Bones weary. I'm there for my son, and my old man. To keep the wolves at bay.

I hesitate to write this comment. I read everyones struggles and I lost my pops when I was 9. He's gone from cancer in the war he fought. A Marine veteran that I wish I could keep saying dad I need you. Now I suffer from PTSD from the shit I put myself through when I lost him since. This song just triggered myself to break down and cry for once.

My boyfriend of many years lost his mom. A few months before I found out I was pregnant. I see him struggle everyday with it. No mount of words will ever fix his heart. He has a hard time with our daughter never getting to meet her. She was amazing. Our daughter would of loved her.
Never hesitate. There are a lot of messed up people in this world. But there is also a lot of us that never met you and will cheer you on in your darkest hours. The death of a parent is something you will never get over. I see it everyday on his face and how much he misses her.

I'm a 34 year old father of 2. I work in a coal power station. Hats off to anyone that fights off their wolves everyday! I fight a pack of wolves every second of everyday. I've been struggling to stay sober bc I've wasted to many years of my life running with the same wolves that now have turned on me. Im blessed that my father is and has been the rock in my life. Guilt overcomes me when thoughts burn through my mind of all the wasted memories that I destroyed by worrying about when I needed my fix. Now that I'm able to clearly think, my dad has moved on to Texas and it's not as simple to just stop and visit. I hate myself for wasting all the golden opportunities that I had of making memories with him. Ever since I became a father to my son, i can only dream of always being there for him like my dad was for me. I hurt so bad in my soul bc I know that all the time thats past can never be presented to me again. God bless everyone of u! Stay strong and don't let the wolves blow down the house that u created! Thanks for taking the time to read this novel!

Yes sir. My dad sacrificed his health and his happiness working himself to exhaustion every day for my family so my mom could stay home and nurture my brother (RIP, hung himself last year) and me. He never let on how tired he was or how much strain it put on him.
Now that I'm the breadwinner for my family, I do the same thing because I learned it from him. I work long hours every day, for months, years at a stretch "to keep the wolves away" and so my wife can be home with our kids. I consider it a privilege to work so hard and be so tired, because I know I'm doing my best for my family, and setting an example of how a man leads and takes care of his wife and children.

My dad had bad complications from diabetes. It was making it hard for him to work. I took a pretty physical job and worked overtime as much as could, and convinced him to retire.
I don't recall him ever telling me that he was proud of me. He wasn't the kind of man that expressed his emotions. He was a hard ass steelworker. But one day as we're sitting together watching TV, he turned to me and said "thank you for stepping up like you have."
I was maybe 22 or 23 at that point. It took all I had to stifle my cries, but I couldn't hold back the tears. To this day I still get choked up thinking about it. That was my time to keep the wolves away. Dad passed in May of 2023. Despite us being at odds so many times, I still miss him so badly.

I am a father of three and a proud union refinery operator. My job isn’t the most glamorous and it may not be the best atmosphere to be in for 12 hours at a time but it pays my bills and has allowed my wife to quit her job to be a stay-at-home mom. I see the company man show his colors all the time. Luckily we have each other’s backs and we go home everyday to our loved ones safe and sound. Never be ashamed of the work that you do, be proud of why you do it.

And God gave his greatest battle to his strongest soldier to deal with the devil(maybe even 3 lol). But today I still stand maybe not as tall, but counting my many blessings. The heart hurts, for many reasons, all being my own stupid fault. That just means the devil needs to grow a few inches here and there and THEN come talk to me. Cuz death already has me knocking on heaven's door and through the tears I just laugh without fear. Only sorrow for what more I could have been..possibly still could be. Maybe 1 dayday. Damn this song hit close to home. My dad worked at a uranium mill for nearly 15 years and has some gnarly scars from acid burns. I remember being really little and him coming home from work with his arm bandaged and him cutting them off and seeing just black goo on his arm and he just did a shot and grabbed a razor blade and pair of pliers and just started cutting out the burn so the acid would stop burning. This was before we had medical insurance, so a bunch of stitches would be way less than a bunch of stitches and surgery. He had been burned over a dozen times since that first one, with one being so bad that the hospital had to do skin graphs. Since then he's worked as a welder, working 2 hours from home and working 16 hour days to keep the lights on and food on the table. Now he works as a railroad engineer and 3 years ago tore his labrum in his shoulder and his bicep tendon throwing a frozen rail switch, he's had 3 surgeries to fix it, and it's still not healed. He sleeps like 3 or 4 hours a night from constantly bouncing back and forth from graveyards to days for 20 years, He's the toughest man I know, and I could fill a damn book with stories about him, I thank the Lord for him every day. This song is the only one that has ever brought a tear to my eye from the words. It really hit close to home for me.

This song brings tears to me every time I listen to it. My dad worked his ass off to give us kids a better life. Working as hard as he did took him from us way too soon. He died of ALS in 1984. It broke my heart. I think of him everyday. I tried to follow in his footsteps taking care of my family. But ultimately I ended up becoming disabled. I worked hard and in pain as a machinist over 40 years before I couldn't do it anymore. I worked until I couldn't anymore just to keep the wolves away. Just as my Dad did. He showed me how to be a man. No matter what. You need to take care of your family. Family is always first no matter what. Thank you for this song. Now my kids are keeping the wolves away. ❤❤
