- The war between Russia and Ukraine has brought Switzerland to a crossroads over its neutrality. Switzerland, which followed its neutrality even during the world wars, has had to sanction Russia for its invasion. However the decision has not gone down well with its right wing party the SVP. The SVP claims the sanctions on Russia and the Swiss bid for a non-permanent seat at UNSC is a threat to Swiss neutrality. On the other hand, Switzerland has blocked supply of ammunition to Ukraine under its neutrality principles, which has sparked sharp criticism from Western and NATO countries. Is the current world order one where Switzerland can no longer afford to maintain its much-vaunted and jealously-guarded neutral status?

Only Switzerland defines the meaning of Swiss neutrality. Neutrality means, you can supply weapons to both parties. 1. The Swiss Bank cliché: These Banks where and are private companies and NOT state owned. The issues from WW2 had to be investigated and most of the money had to be paid to the descendants of the Jewish owners. The swiss citizens did pit a lot of political pressure onto these banks once they heard about all these things! No Swiss is proud about these incidents!
2. Nutrality means, we DO NOT deliver war material to any country which is at war. This just happened a few days ago as the Germans wanted to send amunition they bought in the past from Switzerland to Ukraine. It was DENIED and did NOT HAPPEN! Neutrality also means, SWISS DOES NOT SEND SOLDIERS TO ANY WAR! This never happened!
Neutrality does not mean one lost his empathy for people who suffer! Therefore Switzerland invented the international Red Cross and other humanitarian help organisations! These are worldwide trusted and valuable organisations.
So, i have no problem if you dislike Switzerland for any personal reasons, but if you think you have to blackmail such a small country out of jealousy or any other reason, please listen to us locals if we explain you what is really going on or at least read the according definitions regarding neutrality and such!

As a Swiss, I can only agree about the two world wars: we stay out of other countries' quarrels. But neutrality does not mean blindness. When the distinction between right and wrong is so clear as in the case of Ukraine, I believe that we must do everything for Ukraine, including supplying weapons.

It seems rather inconsistent that Switzerland will allow German troops to use Swiss ammunition in a conflict zone, but Ukrainian troops can't use that same Swiss ammunition in the weapon it is designed for, in a conflict zone. They are happy to make money in the lucrative global arms trade but only on the basis that their exports can't be used when needed, because of some re-export technicality.

It is an agreement between many countries and they define what exactly neutrality means an written form. These countries then comfirm not to attack the neutral country as long as it does comply with the points stated in that agreement!
Switzerland did NOT breach any of these points at any time, but media outlets and people which are not imformed correct claim, that neutrality means to just close your eyes and ignore anything around you, which is in fact incorrect.

As for delivering war materials: This is defined in this agreement as well and has never been breached as well. My personal moral would also tell me, we should not manufacture and sell amunition, but it‘s not me who defined the neutrality act. At least, Switzerland does not sell „ready to use“ material and only parts. Where do we draw the line what war material is? There was once a long ongoing discussion in Switzerland if a non armed proppeler driven small airplane is allready comsidered war material as it can be modified with weaponery added and so on.

Both of you 2 are mixing up things. 1) Swiss neutrality law is clearly defined and for sure is not depending on another country (The Hague Conventions). There is also the Swiss use of "courant normal" what means, you can do business with both party on pre-war conditions. It's also ok to deliver weapons, but to both parties. 2) There is a war material export restriction law in place in Switzerland, which prevents that ammo / war material is delivered to belligerent party (thanks to pacifistic, anti-army, anti-armament lobby, this law will only destroy Swiss armament industry in long term. The same ignorants that claimed there will be no war in Europe anymore.
There is a right of self defence, not only for people, but also for countries. Not supplying Ukraine with weapons/ammo only supports Putin. Swiss neutrality is supposed to support Swiss interest, not the interests of an aggressor. Only delivery of weapons to Ukraine, will guarantee long term peace in Europe. Putin needs to be stopped (appeasement doesn't work, a lesson the world has learnt from WW II).
WW1 and WW2 have been wars for colonial territories. The powerful countries have fought together for the domination of the rest of the world. Swiss neutrality makes sense in this context as Switzerland has no colonies. Since WW2 we have seen decolonization wars (Indochina, Vietnam, Algeria, Korea, even Afghanistan...) and once more, neutrality makes sense as Switzerland is not involved in this problematic. Today we have a war against the border of Ukraine as defined by United Nations, a war against democratic Europe ans a war against freedom of information. Taiwan has its own military and economy and foreign relations. So it is definitely independent from China. If it was really controlled by China then China could place its own officials to rule in Taiwan or actually put its military there and they would be able to take %100 of the chip factories for itself and not sell to the US. Even though it is not officially recognized by other countries officially other countries definitely treat it like such with foreign relations, trades and military alliances. It is actually more important to the US to keep independent from China then practically anything else.
