As you look around the world and take inventory of these authoritarian dictatorial paranoid autocracies there are many common traits they all share.
Paranoia, insecurity, the absolute necessity to govern by intimidation, and fear.
Secrecy, the hording of the nation's wealth, the take over and claim to their own citizen's hard work, and company's and corporations, the immediate separation of elite rulers and the working class, and the maniacal need to expand their reach to control others or other nations along with a psychopathic ego needing constant attention just to name a few.
The citizens are always oppressed. The citizens must work extremely hard for very little reward. The truth of what is really going on in the world is concealed and hidden.
The elite ruling class lives like monarchs while the citizenry starves for basic necessities. Education is restricted to what can serve or benefit the dictator, and keep him in power.
It's amazing a nation full of people could ever tolerate such things. They of course wouldn't tolerate for a minute if they had the taste of real freedom, and had their own rights to self determination.
These very elements are why Russia will never win any war against a western nation or a free Ukraine.
In addition, you can include the former Soviet states that today are independent free nations. They know. They remember.

The 10 year war the Soviet Union fought in afghanistan was against the Mujahideen which included foreign fighters from Islamic countries,the northern alliance led by Ahmad shah Masood and Abdul Rashid Dostum as well as fighters from the Pashtun community who later formed the Taliban.They were funded by wealthy Arab countries as well as the US.
It is not correct for the presenter to say that the war was fought between the USSR and the taliban.

Your news reader incorrectly asserted Russia fought the Taliban, in Afghanistan. First, it was the USSR that fought in Afghanistan. Second, the most significant militia group that fought the Soviets was HiG Hizbullah Islami Gulbuddin. The CIA supplied resources to the militia groups through Pakistan's InterService Intelligence Agency ISI, and HiG was their favourite, so they got the lion's share of that CIA aid.
However HiG and ISI had a falling out. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of HiG was an educated man. His militia was the militia that attracted educated Afghans. The other militia groups were largely lead by illiterates. The ISI found that this made the group hard to control, after the Soviets were kicked out. So they stopped supporting them. They sponsored a brand new group, the Taliban, lead by illiterates, who were more maleable and easily controlled.
While individual men, who later joined the newly created Taliban, may have fought the Soviets, the Taliban did not, because they did not exizt at that time.

Your characterisation of foreign fighters helping Ukraine is completely wrong, why? Did you not research this before you made it up??? The only foreign fighters allowed to join the Ukraine defence must have previous battlefield experience, they are vetted for the knowledge, experience and ability to help. The language barrier is not such an issue as the foreign regiments include bilingual Ukrainians which solves this problem, also there are a lot of Ukrainians are able to speak and understand English. Also, it is kind of silly to say only a few hundred, when there is evidence that at a minimum at least 1000 foreign fighters have joined the Ukrainian army, so why did you say just a few hundred??? Who's side are you on??? Do your homework next time, as your distorting the truth, with this low quality hit piece. The foreign fighters are not their for selfies and it is dumb to suggest so. This was a pretty poor piece of journalism.
Not to mention Irish and Finnish volunteers are destroying the Russians in Kharkiv. English-speaking volunteers are also doing a great job at holding the southern line against Russian advances too.

As usual w/ war, there are conflicting reports on the # of foreign volunteers joining Ukraine's side. In 1 instance it was 5,000 which might be the more realistic #. There have been plenty of individual stories of these people I've seen from North America, Australia, all of Europe & some places in Asia (Japan, South Korea & even Thailand), so it's definitely a thing.

Mercenaries won´t change much in this war. The best of them could be used for special operations, the rest is either used as cannonfodder or for tasks with low complexity. I have read statements from the US military attachee to Ukraine, that said that all who apply are thoroughly vetted and only a small fraction of the applicants are then eventually picked to serve in Ukraine and for no pay. That means only very small numbers will actually fight for the Ukrainian army. This war will be mainly fought by conscripts and professional soldiers.

Correct. Especially in the empty expanses of the Donbass it is tanks and artillery that call the shots. Special forces are good at house-to-house, recce and behind the lines sabotage.
There are fighters from Brazil, India, Mexico, a ton from Belarus, and Chechens, on top of your NATO countries. They do their best to weed out those w/o experience. I think there's far more than a couple hundred of them.

I use to be in the Canadian army but I never went to war and only soldiers who have war experience are accepted in Ukrainian army. There's already about 700 canadians soldiers in Ukraine maybe more. They create a special regiment for Canadian's soldiers. Many soldiers come also from USA, UK, Australia, Germany, France and even Japan. The real fact is that soldiers come from at least 40 different countries. But also doctors, nurses, policemen, paramedics, firefighter etc. all volunteers. Canada, USA, UK and other countries are training Ukrainian soldiers to use new weapons. Tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, missiles, drones etc. They also train pilots on F-15, F-16, F-18, Rafales and other fighter planes used by NATO.

There is no training on NATO aircraft. The California Air National Guard has been training Ukrainian pilots in tactics and technical combat skills for 30 years now but using their own aircraft. We just delivered the 20-25 MiG-29s that we had bought from Romania when the USSR collapsed.

What motivates a foreign fighter in Ukraine is the same thing that motivated every allied soldier and resistance member in world ward 2, it's the desire of good men and women to defeat evil, such as the defeat of a fascist dictator and war criminal like Hitler or Putin, who for whatever warped reason decides to invade peaceful countrys and commit war crimes against civilian populations or to decorate soldiers who rape and execute civilians for kicks.

We can see that Israel belongs to the Jews, similarly all the lands around Kiev of Kievian Rus belong to Kiev as a single nation and city state. Russia's beginnings are a wanting child begun as a captive insurgency having nothing of its own; a captive state that was reeking in servitude to Mongolia and invented by Mongolia. The entire culture of Russia from Moscow is Mongolian centralized power, a pagan culture of no empathy and Christianity. The Christianity is tainted as a state religion or theocracy and politicized. History is often obscured by being written by the ones in charge. The history of Ukraine has been obscured by the Soviet Occupation and cultural appropriations. Moscow in an attempt to appropriate a history not its own, rewrote the narrative of history to cover up its compromised origins; Kiev and Ukraine is a history much older and more civilized; making contributions to civilization. Russian despotism becomes the blueprint, foundation & model for every despot nation, look at its allies; the error of its ways has spread throughout the globe; much like the message from the Holy Mother at Fatima. Those that are sympathetic to Russian atrocities can find similarities in their own histories. Ukraine has a democracy at a local level Moscow never had and fears. Russian boundless ignorance is a type often found in the poorest of nations, and usually the poorest have a history of the hardest tyrants over them that also inflict poverty, physical and spiritual, on others they attempt to subjugate, a reflection of their own lives, an abomination of desolation.

The huge Yuzivska shale gas deposit in the Donbas (1.09 - 4 trillion metric metres of shale gas) - is the second-largest shale gas deposit in Europe. The EU was interested in buying gas from Ukraine in order to diversify its suppliers and cut dependence on Russian gas. Ukraine has extensive gas storage facilities and pipelines, close to the EU, and such an arrangement would make a large dent in Gazprom's (Putin's) profits. Similarly, Crimea has large offshore gas deposits that Putin wanted. This war is all about Putin's Gazprom profits. That's why they are pulling back to defend Donbas. That's why Russia was funding the “separatists."

There is an abundant amount of gas and oil in Ukraine alone to supply Europe. There are other sources such as Israel and their platforms in the Mediterranean. Their gas findings alone can more than offset Russian gas in Western Europe.
Gazprom (Putin) will lose more money over this war than they will gain from seizing the gas deposits in the Donbas and Crimea.

Note the Ukranian forces actually employ their Foreign fighters individually as part of the Ukrainian army and should enjoy all the protections of regular troops The Wagner group are independent mercenary companies and not an actual legal part of the Russian army so therefore by international law have no protections
