Yes, it was co-opted by Nazi forces to push unification with the Axis powers, but, it originally started as a rallying cry during the Ukrainian War of Independence, which ran from 1917 to at least the early 1920s, and was started by a group of anarchists fighting against Empire. It wasn't exactly original then, either--the phrases "Glory to Ukraine!" and "For the glory of Ukraine!" exist in texts clear back to the 1870s, at least, if not earlier. Check your information.

We can't forget that, before Ukraine separatists worked with the Nazis, Ukrainians were exterminated in their millions by the communists during the 1930s. Even some Ukrainian Jews welcomed the nazis (until they realised that things could get worse than they already were under rule by the USSR). The world is a more complicated place than this analysis would have you believe and choosing a lesser evil to achieve your ends is sometimes the only choice available. This war cry is nationalistic, not nazi.

This analysis also conveniently leaves out the fact that the slogan traces its origins to the earliest days of the ukranian nationalist movement which ( for the 20th century ) began before WWI when it was under Austro Hungarian rule and the post WWI period which saw the break up of the Austro hungarian empire, and the effort to create and maintain a Ukrainian state, free of polish and bolshevik control, just to name a few. It is far more convenient to attribute the slogan to the fascist leaning Ukrainian nationalists of the 1930s and 1940s. Much easier narrative that way.
Slava Ukraini traces its roots back to the 1917-1921 Ukraine war of Independence, which they lost to the Soviet Union (Russia). Heroiam slava traces its roots back to the 1930s, well before the Germans and their ideology was in Ukraine. In the 1930s the Russians under the Soviet banner were slaughtering and starving Ukrainians (and others) by the millions.

It seems the author was echoing RU propoganda's "knowledge". BTW, it is SLAVA UKRAYINY. If you listen carefully, you will hear this clearly. This would be the best way to transcribe this in the Latin alphabet. Same thing for HEROYAM SLAVA. That Y sound is important in order to pronounce those words better. I know English speakers are not very good at pronouncing other languages, that's why I am pointing this out. Since those words are written in Cyrillic, there is no absolute best way to write them. But what I am seeing most lately does not convey the right pronunciation for sure... ;) And that is not a "Nazi war cry". It is a cry for independence. It isn't a fascist slogan. Many Ukrainians sided with the Germans during WW2 because the Germans were fighting the USSR. So Germany was the lesser of two evils from a Ukrainian point of view. The Finns also sided with Germany for the same reason.

Glory to "country name" is a calque war cry in many languages. There is no reason to associate it to an ideology other then a war against a foreign enemy. Slava ("glory") is common word also used to denominate celebration of family protection saint in orthodox countries. However catchphrase consists of two words and is far more recent invention used untill recently only by extreme right wing nationalists. See about equivalent "Za Dom Spremni" in Croatia.

Yes, it was co-opted by Nazi forces to push unification with the Axis powers, but, it originally started as a rallying cry during the Ukrainian War of Independence, which ran from 1917 to at least the early 1920s, and was started by a group of anarchists fighting against Empire.
It wasn't exactly original then, either--the phrases "Glory to Ukraine!" and "For the glory of Ukraine!" exist in texts clear back to the 1870s, at least, if not earlier. Check your information.

This analysis also conveniently leaves out the fact that the slogan traces its origins to the earliest days of the ukranian nationalist movement which ( for the 20th century ) began before WWI when it was under Austro Hungarian rule and the post WWI period which saw the break up of the Austro hungarian empire, and the effort to create and maintain a Ukrainian state, free of polish and bolshevik control, just to name a few. It is far more convenient to attribute the slogan to the fascist leaning Ukrainian nationalists of the 1930s and 1940s. Much easier narrative that way.

BTW, it is SLAVA UKRAYINY. If you listen carefully, you will hear this clearly. This would be the best way to transcribe this in the Latin alphabet. Same thing for HEROYAM SLAVA. That Y sound is important in order to pronounce those words better. I know English speakers are not very good at pronouncing other languages, that's why I am pointing this out. Since those words are written in Cyrillic, there is no absolute best way to write them. But what I am seeing most lately does not convey the right pronunciation for sure... ;)

I think the Russian cry is not right, it was more like oorah pobieda, where pobieda means victory, so the soviet army shouted hooray victory before charging the germans and their allies.
