LOVE my 3rd gen, SR5! Other than basic maintenance, I've added the Rough Country 3" suspension lift/level and 31" Wrangler MT/R Kevlar reinforced sidewall tires. So far, I've very carelessly driven WHERE EVER THE FUCK I PLEASE, with ZERO issues. Closest I've ever came to being stuck was 21+" deep (on 31's mind you), in the middle of the softest, muddiest, cornfield---I ALMOST crawled to a stop, but just before it did, I finally shifted into "4L" & pushed the "diff lock" button for the 1st time since I bought it, started cutting the steering wheel from side to side, and inched my way back to solid ground. The 2nd greatest moment I've EVER had in a corn field. 😂🔰 edit: 2002, with 295,000+ miles
I love my 3rd gen 4runner it’s unstoppable and never breaks down, still pulls hard and runs silky smooth at 270k miles seems like having another 270k miles on lifespan

We live in the rust belt and the under body is better than cars I've seen that were 5 years old. Believe it or not she can pay cash for a loaded 2018 LX 570 but she won't even consider an upgrade because her 4Runner keeps on chugging along. True story
Right on man. I'm driving an 05' Sequoia with 260k miles, still runs like a dream and not a single big issue. Only real problem I had was the O2 sensors went bad (after 250k miles). Toyota is honestly the foreword in reliability

Eddy GT86 is not a corolla thats for sure meanwhile the AE86 has debuted in America not as these two brothers known as Trueno and Levin but,as Corollas. For those who never driven them, its casual for them to say its a boring car.Its more than a car if you want more than just pure speed.
I know its probably been berated in this cancer of a comment section but I gotta say a few things. 1. 1985 was the only year 4runner with a solid front axle from the factory. 2. Turbo 22re motors are really hard to find that was factory in the United States and if you do find a totally stock one it comes in a automatic (making 130ish hp) in the states that is. 3. Everyone will hate on the 3.slow V6 (SOHC) but they will outrun any 22re stock for stock (and can be reliable if regular maintenance is done...like with any engine) 4. 1996 was the start of the third gen 4runner (2nd gen was from 1990-1995) and is arguably the best one produced because of its more modern luxury while retaining its small/tight design and off-road dominance like the previous generations and a optional updated V6 (3.4l DOHC) that deleted the "problems" the 3.0l had. The 4 cylinder option was a 2.7l that made as much hp as the old 3.0l V6 5. Modern 4runners do have a roll down back window but has a liftgate hatch starting with the 3rd gen 6. late model 4runners (as in 2009-present) dont have a V8 option (only the 4th gen had that option) and starting with the 4th gen they didnt offer a manual transmission anymore in the states at least 7. 4runners are also THE last SUV with a body-on-frame construction (the only jeep that still retains this feature is the wrangler and its variants) for those that dont know how a BOF design makes a difference put it this way; when off-roading a BOF can flex more without compromising structural integrity, it can withstand a minor fender bender with a tree and makes the car more rigid to abuse(hence why trucks are still made that way). However this makes for this TRUE SUV to weigh quite a bit and cost more and its very inefficient fuel economy due to being heavier. 8. outside of the united states 4runners/surfs had a optional 3.0l 4 cylinder turbo diesel option(and I wish the states got these) Hope this sheds some light on why the 4runners started (and still are) a class of its own
I owned a 1984 4runner solid front axle, 22r (Carburetor), 5 speed and was loaded with incline-meter, tilt meter & altimeter. It was like #102 from the factory.
Nice, glad to see a comment with some actual substance. One correction though - the manual transmission option was discontinued during the 3rd gens. The 2000 model was the last 4runner offered with a stick.
Never thought I would own one of these things and now I love it lol. It’s lasted 230k miles and it’s in the shop right now for a new rad and water pump
I've had a 88, 91 and 92. They're badass. I can see why someone who never experienced the toughness, reliability, capability of the 1st or 2nd gen Toyota 4x4s and the 20/22R would see it as just another suv. Old Toyota 4x4s hold their value extremely well and people swear by them. They're the shiznit.
I fell in love with the first gen 4runner. Found a used one in 1997 and the high resale value kept me from buying it. Now 2018 bought me a new TRD off road premium. My life is complete. :D
Salvador Maño If im not wrong the samurai was called a jimny since the start of production, but in other places it was called samurai, and jimny means something like "go SUV-ing" in japan if im not mistaken...anyway i want one and will buy it one day
Blaž Benčič yes i know, also chevrolet selled samurais, also called holden drover in australia & maruti gipsy in india, if u like the samurais i got one, check out for "hummerinator" here i youtube
I have a 2000 Limited with 190K, a '91 with 300K that I beat in the woods, and a '99 2WD Taco with 300K. These things will last forever if taken care of.
My dad had a 3rd gen Hilux Surf, and when he bought it, 2 of his brothers got ones as well. Went through some crazy climbs with them together too, my dad even put an 18-inch sub in the back. ONLY gripe with them is that they can roll over pretty easily because they have a high center of gravity. Also with that tailgate, you could get an option with a spare wheel on the back that you'd open to the side and you could still flip down the back, there's another trim level that came with a sunroof too. They even had a little light on the dash that would tell you when the turbo started to spool :) I miss ours, when it was imported there were two jet skis above it, so the roof wasn't perfect :/ found some Japanese money in it though :) We occasionally saw the new owner, he loved the thing to death.
Another really solid addition to this series. I never thought that anyone could make me sit through nearly 12 minutes of 4Runner history but damn.....well played. I'm looking forward to whatever you guys cover next. Also that subplot with the Toyota employees was hilarious.
I have a ‘97 4Runner Limited with 300k on the odometer and the thing runs like clockwork. Off-roading, comfortable daily driving, you name it and it can do it. Very capable in stock form and I don’t plan on ever selling it. I’ve seen too many people say they miss their third gens to get rid of mine. :,)
Earl Rogers Look man I’m not a big fan of Chrysler either even tho I drive a Dodge lol. The only reason I have my truck is because my old car was falling apart and my relative offered me his truck for a couple hundred. I would like to have a different vehicle, but I still like my truck and will probably drive it until it dies
I was pumped about this episode until you skipped the best looking generation... THIRD GENS. 1996-2002. Updated 3.4L 5VZ engine that runs forever. Most desired years. 😫
I have a 1999 Toyota 4runner SR5 4x4. That V6 engine does last forever, over 227,000 miles and that engine runs great. Unfortunately my transmission just gave out new years eve. It freaking sucks because I love my 4runner. It's very rear for the transmission to go out in them, especially keeping up with fluids which I did. Guess it because of so many miles, driving daily, drove from Pennsylvania to Alabama and back many times. Been mudding and off roading. Could have been temps getting way into the minus, well below zero range. Wasn't until it got minus 12 outside with ice and snow it gave out. But I will be buying another one soon, hopefully. Will always miss my 99 4runner though, heartbreaking to watch it go.
7:08 "oh, and, there's an electric locking system for the rear differential, which in laymans terms means you could lock the rear diff electronically." Nailing it my dudes.
We have owned several Toyota trucks over the years, and currently have a gen 4 4runner and just put a deposit on a 5th gen off road premium I never knew the story behind how this SUV was created. I also remember seeing Treckers back in the day and it's sort of neat to now know the back story on those also! So thanks for taking the time to make this very entertaining video.
If you've done the 4Runner, can you also do the Land Cruiser? In New Zealand these things are THE 4x4 to take off road. They absolutely demolish. And are indestructible. Love them.
I bought a 3rd gen 4x4 SR5 new off the lot in '96, still driving it 250k+ miles later.. I'll probably be driving it until I'm too old to drive any more. I did have to replace basically every moving part under the front end, rack and pinion, ball joints, rod ends etc. at a bit over 200k which is the first real repair I've had to do to it. Planning on a paint job, new carpet and interior in the next few years.
Haha I replaced the coolant in my old Exploder with water in the radiator....in December...in Minnesota. It ran for over a week before it finally froze hard, blew a hose off, ran without any coolant and finally seized and died so that I could "justify" buying a 4runner
One of the best cars I have ever owned. A long time ago I Had a 4Runner sold it with 175k miles no problem. 2years ago bought a 4Runner TRD pro awesome and a week ago my wife bought a 4Runner limited! It’s too nice! Car never has a problems and is more than capable to go anywhere.
Last I saw(I haven't been back to check on it in over a year), my dad's 4runner('01 limited model) was sitting right about 275k miles, ran like a top, and still rode comfortably on and off the road. And he needs that considering the dirt road he lives on. I swear that thing is going to outlast us all, so long as it doesn't get in a wreck. Because holy shit did Toyota fuck up its impact durability. The bumper crumples from a 3mph crash(trust me, I know from experience). Still, I love that thing. Though I'm pretty sure my brother gets first dibs.
I wish you would do another 240sx/Silvia video! It was the first "Up to Speed" video, and the style of these has changed so much, I think a revamp would be necessary! Favorite series on UA-cam!

Up to speed on the Toyota AE86
匚卄丹れ匕工匚口 YT there are like 2 models no
It sucks
Its a Corolla a boring car. And the fucking anime is shit.
Verti Dirty Birty dayum dude never hate on the 86 its a jdm legend
Eddy GT86 is not a corolla thats for sure meanwhile the AE86 has debuted in America not as these two brothers known as Trueno and Levin but,as Corollas. For those who never driven them, its casual for them to say its a boring car.Its more than a car if you want more than just pure speed.
Up to speed Toyota Land Cruiser!!! We need it!!
3. Everyone will hate on the 3.slow V6 (SOHC) but they will outrun any 22re stock for stock (and can be reliable if regular maintenance is done...like with any engine)
4. 1996 was the start of the third gen 4runner (2nd gen was from 1990-1995) and is arguably the best one produced because of its more modern luxury while retaining its small/tight design and off-road dominance like the previous generations and a optional updated V6 (3.4l DOHC) that deleted the "problems" the 3.0l had. The 4 cylinder option was a 2.7l that made as much hp as the old 3.0l V6
5. Modern 4runners do have a roll down back window but has a liftgate hatch starting with the 3rd gen
6. late model 4runners (as in 2009-present) dont have a V8 option (only the 4th gen had that option) and starting with the 4th gen they didnt offer a manual transmission anymore in the states at least
7. 4runners are also THE last SUV with a body-on-frame construction (the only jeep that still retains this feature is the wrangler and its variants) for those that dont know how a BOF design makes a difference put it this way; when off-roading a BOF can flex more without compromising structural integrity, it can withstand a minor fender bender with a tree and makes the car more rigid to abuse(hence why trucks are still made that way). However this makes for this TRUE SUV to weigh quite a bit and cost more and its very inefficient fuel economy due to being heavier.
8. outside of the united states 4runners/surfs had a optional 3.0l 4 cylinder turbo diesel option(and I wish the states got these)
Hope this sheds some light on why the 4runners started (and still are) a class of its own
'91 4runner Thank you. I have a 1996 SR5 5-speed, best vehicle I've ever owned. Thanks for putting all the facts up!
Nice a 3rd gen with a 5 speed! They didn't make too many of those to begin with in the states; they started fazing out the manuals in this generation.
I owned a 1984 4runner solid front axle, 22r (Carburetor), 5 speed and was loaded with incline-meter, tilt meter & altimeter. It was like #102 from the factory.
technically you could have ordered the 2nd gen in 2wd (i have seen it) but its a rarity much like the 2 door option from 1990-1993
Nice, glad to see a comment with some actual substance. One correction though - the manual transmission option was discontinued during the 3rd gens. The 2000 model was the last 4runner offered with a stick.
Never thought I would own one of these things and now I love it lol. It’s lasted 230k miles and it’s in the shop right now for a new rad and water pump
Toyota Land Cruiser!!!!
G'day M8 Nissan patrol as well !!
no
I hate how they say hilux they say helix but its supposed to be hi-lux
Pumphrey... love you bro.
Up to speed with the Ford focus?
This!!
I've been asking this on every single up to speed..
focus? why? escort cosworth or something way more interesting, hell i'd rather even see the "contour" or a lumina lol
The only time youll see focus and speed in the same sentence
fightmeirl didn't the escort become the escort.
how about its older sibling? the Land Cruiser and its variants?
Snoop Doge I haven't watched yet. Did he mention the Trail Blazer?
DrFuNK

A N A R C H Y it was (and still) reliable car before the 4runner was introduced, my dad still drives his 2004 Land cruiser with manual gear
Basically jeeps but shit and overpriced
I've had a 88, 91 and 92. They're badass. I can see why someone who never experienced the toughness, reliability, capability of the 1st or 2nd gen Toyota 4x4s and the 20/22R would see it as just another suv. Old Toyota 4x4s hold their value extremely well and people swear by them. They're the shiznit.
This is your dad. I'll see you next Christmas son. Great vid btw!
CoachSteve4u It’s time
A couple days
did u end up visiting him?
I fell in love with the first gen 4runner. Found a used one in 1997 and the high resale value kept me from buying it. Now 2018 bought me a new TRD off road premium. My life is complete. :D
Do suzuki samurai/jimny, it's a legend
Hahaha so true
i agree with the LJ, SJ, samurai, jimny saga please @donut media!!
Salvador Maño i will
I've got a 1997 4runnuer limited with 190,000 miles. I will save money keeping this for another 15 years. It's damn near bulletproof.
Mike Doe I also have a 97 with 250,000 miles. If you take care of them they will go to 400,000 no problem
Whats the diff. Betwee. The limited & the sr5??
I have a 2000 Limited with 190K, a '91 with 300K that I beat in the woods, and a '99 2WD Taco with 300K. These things will last forever if taken care of.
SR5 in the 3rd gen has no bodyside cladding or fake wood dash. It does have durable cloth seats.
My step father (God rest his soul) had a Infiniti SUV that looked the same as a 2nd gen 4Runner, when he died the thing didn't ruin.
They even had a little light on the dash that would tell you when the turbo started to spool :)
I miss ours, when it was imported there were two jet skis above it, so the roof wasn't perfect :/ found some Japanese money in it though :)
We occasionally saw the new owner, he loved the thing to death.
My man you need to do the Dodge Challenger
Well this episode was unexpected to say the least
yeah i know come on we haven't run out of cool cars yet, were not too doing a video on JUST a 4 runner
Up to speed is just about that, giving you knowledge about cars you don't know much about
It was pretty interesting
Don’t get me wrong I still loved this episode!!
Yeah, it's also pretty wrong. These truck are awesome, but this video had some pretty bad infom
Up to speed on the Toyota Corolla
yeahhhhh!!!!
now you gotta do the Tacoma.
As much as I like the Tacoma I'd rather see a Dodge Dakota
Earl Rogers Dodge is bringing back the Dakota?
Earl Rogers Time for me to get an upgrade, I have the 99 Dakota sport 5.2l V8
Earl Rogers you must drive a Ford
Earl Rogers Look man I’m not a big fan of Chrysler either even tho I drive a Dodge lol. The only reason I have my truck is because my old car was falling apart and my relative offered me his truck for a couple hundred. I would like to have a different vehicle, but I still like my truck and will probably drive it until it dies
I was pumped about this episode until you skipped the best looking generation... THIRD GENS. 1996-2002. Updated 3.4L 5VZ engine that runs forever. Most desired years. 😫
Dakota Whitworth he also skipped the 2nd gen 2 door.... the rarest 4runner
I like my 4th gen v8
He talked about the 3rd gen at 6.30 to 7ish mark
The best was the first 2 years, 1984 and 1985 because of the solid front axle, 22R, and removable top.
WE WANT COROLLA AE86
Obama Fan it's coming very soon!!
Obama Fan boring cars, AE86, more boring cars, GT86 that's not even a Corolla
Mr 7K5 i mean why the hate though, its a joy car and definitely a good 4 banger than you cant bang
Donut Media omg YES!
Obama Fan i just sayd that but I WANT IT 2!!
Love them.
My mom is giving me her 2000 toyota 4runner sr5 when I am 16 so I am super excited!!!
The Chicken Nuggets congratulations
Elwookiee07 Thanks!!!
What a great gift and first vehicle
lacedbassAK Thank you! I am super stoked!

Nakazato: "Gyah!"
I had a 2001 4Runner Sport Edition and now have a 2006 Sport Edition V8 ...Absolutely LOVE them! Highly recommend. I'd buy another for sure.
Do an Up To Speed for Corvette
I bought a 3rd gen 4x4 SR5 new off the lot in '96, still driving it 250k+ miles later.. I'll probably be driving it until I'm too old to drive any more. I did have to replace basically every moving part under the front end, rack and pinion, ball joints, rod ends etc. at a bit over 200k which is the first real repair I've had to do to it. Planning on a paint job, new carpet and interior in the next few years.
Do the ae 86
A Corolla. How fucking fun.

Fix
Or
Repair
Daily
FORD backwards = driver returns on foot
Haha I replaced the coolant in my old Exploder with water in the radiator....in December...in Minnesota. It ran for over a week before it finally froze hard, blew a hose off, ran without any coolant and finally seized and died so that I could "justify" buying a 4runner
My friend has a 1990 4runner with 750000 miles and still going
I love this guy...but dude....wtf is a HEELEX??
I think you mean HILUX....pronounced HIGH LUX
Yeah his mispronouncing triggered me too.
We're American so it's heelex
This is America, take you can your colours else where
RadMcsketchy you mean colors..cuz this America💕
He speaks American not fluent in English
One of the best cars I have ever owned. A long time ago I Had a 4Runner sold it with 175k miles no problem. 2years ago bought a 4Runner TRD pro awesome and a week ago my wife bought a 4Runner limited! It’s too nice! Car never has a problems and is more than capable to go anywhere.
0:39 So the 4Runner was fisted into existence...now that is something I truly did not know! lol
Hey that's my car jumping in the intro sequence!
Sweet! Thanks for letting us use it! DM me and I'll send you a shirt!
RyanS oh yea 😂😂😂
Nice! Has to be a good feeling! 3rd gen owner here, but I haven't jumped mine...yet...lol
toyota helix? you me HiLux (high lux)
Exactly! It's High Lux, not Hee Lux.
There’s plenty of other misinformation in this video
This is America. We don't do your gay pronunciations
Alex Leeden
In some parts of Saudi Arabia we call it the “high lex”
My man!
Was eating jalapeño chips when I️ saw this on my recommendation list, the salty goodness of those chips that were upon my finger tips somehow got in my eye. My eye now looks like his flannel shirt and I’m 100 satisfied with the video.
nice
Donut Media is easily my favorite automotive channel on UA-cam and I love watching every episode. However, I've noticed design changes over time.
To me, this episode is PERFECT. It is the epitome of everything I liked in an episode, and nothing I didn't (I'm not a fan of the cartoon animations in the newer episodes).
Donut Media, if you're reading, I love you.
Peak Donut Media was a good time
Easily one of the best videos you’ve ever made
#JUSTLIKEMYDAD
i-Spec That was my fav part.
i-Spec that part made me almost choke on my food
Please do a Land Cruiser video !
Holden Commodore- Everything you need to know up to speed.
For you Americans- The Pontiac G8 is the Ve ss and the Chevy ss is the vf ss
For you British people- The Vaxhuall VXR8 is the VE and the VF Commodore and the Vaxhuall Monaro is the Vz Holden Monaro Cv8
I drive 96, V6 3.4L. After 140k miles, just a technician maintenance done. Steering bar and gasket valve. True beast, AWD & differential.
#justlikemydad
Monticello Thomas my dad left when he found out i was a furry
Up to speed: chevy corvette
At 4:09 when he's talking about the independent front suspension how it makes it more number but shows a SFA climbing lol
good catch, it's actually this guy's 4runner, an 86 that he converted to SFA: ua-cam.com/video/FcfnCdnvjSw/v-deo.html
yea hell no ifs makes it alot worse for wheelin i got a 3rd gen 4r broken cv boots like crazy fucking lower ball joints breaking and its a big thing in the 4runner community to do a SAS because ifs is shit
@@maxplzak2615 I have an 87 and I really dig the front axle as it is. I wheel it pretty hard on some soft rocky dirt and I've never had any issues, but I don't do any big rock crawling, which is probably why I don't miss the sfa.
Hell yeah this channel is growing FAST. well deserved!
next the land cruiser !!!!
