    A note on the sealed transmission for those that off road or go into deeper water crossings. There is a breather valve on the top of transmission (you can't see it but you can feel it if you reach around). Get about 10 feet of 1/4 inch automotive tubing (like vacuum hose) and some zip ties. Put one end on the valve and run the tube up front to the highest point in the engine compartment but make sure the end is not blocked. Zip tie where needed. This allows the transmission to vent gasses but protects the transmission from sucking any water in the transmission. This is the same on 4Runner, Tacoma and FJ.

    Excellent video I bought an 08 4 runner that had minor collision damage on the sides and came out of a local shop looking new. The truck has 85K miles runs perfectly and has not had any mechanical issues, I love as a long term toyota customer I have never had any major issues except for my 2000 Tundra with a blown transmission at 175K miles. I did have a problem ,my only problem was the rear window assembly completely disintegrated the mechanism is very expensive to repair. But that's been the first repair I've had in 10 years so I can't complain. Hello to all my fellow 4Runners

    I have a 2014 4runner limited. I did buy the extended warranty when I bought it new. Glad I did. The struts all started leaking at 52000 miles. Because the system is the X-REAS system, when one strut leaks, they all have to be replaced. The quoted price if I didn't have the extended warranty was almost $4000. However, even if you don't have the warranty, the struts can be replaced AFAIK, with standard shocks costing $500 for all of them. The ports on the X-Reas system are self-sealing shrader valves so they won't leak if disconnected. Just in time for state inspection!

    Priceless info on the 4Runner from a Toyota master tech! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. I was a little surprised that you didn't dwell much on transmission maintenance? Most dealers seem to stick by the "sealed unit ... do not service" line ... which has always bugged me. Servicing it is a bit of a pain due to the needing to have a scan tool to monitor the trans temp to get the fluid level right ... but to me ... a "must do" maintenance on this vehicle if you're keeping the truck for the long haul. Thanks again!

    • @TheCarCareNut
      @TheCarCareNut  3 роки тому +8

      Thank you for watching my video! On the transmission my stand across the channel is the only thing that is sealed is the new transmission case you will need when this one goes out for lack of fluid maintenance. I would replace the fluid every 60k or 6 years. Here’s a video you to show you a workaround to get the level right without a scan tool ua-cam.com/video/eRxSu4-4ojo/v-deo.html this also applies to 4runners.

    I have a 2019 Limited and 2019 TRD - changing the factory Shocks/Struts in SR5's and TRD's to Bilstein 5100's eliminates the nose dive tendencies and since the fronts are height adjustable you can level the truck. So nice to hear from a person that really knows their stuff! You are awesome. While watching this and it came to the part about the back door, we thought we were going to hear someone else that has had the issues we have. Since we are in Canada, far north of Chicago :) we have had several issues where the back door will not open and once the side door also. Wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that we had two large elderly dogs in the back and they were basically trapped inside while we had to get our manual out and read it to learn how to release the door lock and let me tell you, that was no fun. I have reported it to Toyota Canada and the dealership but since we are 4 hours from the dealership they have done nothing for us because it fixes itself when it gets warm inside the truck or it hits a bump, I'm not really sure. Have you come across this problem at all? And great to also hear that we are not alone with the break issue. Our 2017 started developing spongy bad brakes the following year and have brought it to the dealerships attention to no avail. It just got back the day before yesterday and there was basically metal on metal on the one wheel so far. We are currently in the process of changing them as we speak. The pins were very difficult to get out and hopefully since the caliper went in it will come out when the new rotors and pads are installed. We will definitely keep an eye on the calipers in the future. I wish I could bring my vehicle to the dealership you work at, they are very very lucky to have such a great tech to count on as are your customers!

    I'm in the Chicagoland area and just found a 2010 4Runner 4x4 part time, auto, 176k miles for my Darling Kate. Cost $13k plus taxes etc. It came from the Boston area till this fall where it ended up in Melrose Park, IL. Very good condition, frame is solid, 4x4 works perfectly. It's a bit of a transition for her, as her last car was a Chrysler minivan, though most of her vehicles previous have been full size Dodge vans. BTW, my current machine is a 1997 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 manual trans that is in pretty good shape for its years, currently at 192k miles. Frame is still solid. Great machines.

    Re watched this video. I had a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. Had one side of my engine destroyed due to bad lifters. Only 46000 miles. Under powertrain warranty, but would have cost me 8000 if I had to pay for it. GMC only fixed one side. They used the same defective parts to fix it (the problem is with the spring loaded Active Fuel Management Lifters (AFM)). Did not address the other side. I didn't trust it for long trips anymore. I sold it to "revert" to old school, reliable Toyota 4runner. Don't want AFM, don't want fancy, I want something that can take me anywhere and be reliable. Thank you for this video!!! I am getting rid of my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 in the 12-18 months. Had it roughly 15 years and put around 70,000+ miles on it. It was pretty god for the first 5-8 years it was great. Got into a "major accident" around Year 8/9 and had to replace much of the paneling on the right side along with the passenger door, but zero frame damage (kept it from being totaled per state laws). However, the oil pan is busted, something with either the axles or tires is causing issues, electrical is messed up, Jeep dealer didn't fix cruise control at start, center console is coming apart, needs new carpeting, etc. Partially my fault, but also that's a lot of $$$. And it's probably only work maybe $1000-2000. It would probably cost that in total repairs. However, the 2022 car market is INSANE. Saw a 2016 4Runner TRD Pro going for $32,000+! So I'm going to fix the oil pan and electrical and wait a year or so to sell, but have pretty much made my mind up on a 4Runner.
    I want to get out and off-road, camp, hike, bike, tailgate, etc more. And as you stated the 4Runner is one of the last body on frame SUVs. It's an SUV unlike so many mid-sized "SUVs". I don't really consider a Highlander an SUV. It's a cross between a station wagon/hatchback and minivan. Seriously that kind of vehicle has replaced the van market of the 80s, 90s, etc. And while they can go off-road they require more modding even on their off-road base versions. The only other mid-sized SUV that's on par with the 4Runner is the Wranger. Lets just say I'm done with Jeep until another company buys out Fiat and brings the quality back to pre 2007 and probably more like pre-2000.
    My family uses an automotive advisor that goes and finds the exact vehicle you want. You tell him as much or as little as you want. We live in South Carolina so we say nothing from the above VA and sorta draw an imaginary line. We avoid rust like the plague. And then we get into the year, make, model, trim, paint color, etc. This video is helping me compile a list for the advisor to check. As you stated ALL vehicles will have some kind of issues during their lifetimes, but if I can start out with as little of them as possible. I want to see what the next gen will look like, the features Toyota adds, any engine changes, etc. I really wish Toyota would add ventilated seats on the Off-Road Premium and TRD Pro. Living in the south, ventilated seats are more valuable than heated ones. I also still don't understand how climate control is only a high end feature in the 4Runner. I understand not having dual zone in the less expensive trims, but you'd think climate control would be a basic down to the SRS. I'm pretty set on a TRD Pro. I was going to go with a Off-Road Premium, but then you don't have the climate control. And while I like the Limited's leather seats and on-board navigation I hate it's exterior and would rather not spend thousands tearing it apart or messing it up on a mountain trail. Thanks again for this amazing video and all your other videos! We've lost faith in a lot of mechanics and shops in our area. Most of the dealers over charge, some of the locals over charge, and other locals can't fix half the problems. I'd almost be willing to travel out of state for repairs if it wasn't so expensive on my gas costs.
