Beneath The Glory | A Desert Landscape Painting

- This landscape painting in oils is the fifth painting of my series of work capturing what I love most about the outdoors and is an attempt to capture the magnificent beauty of the Southwestern United States. This painting began on location with a plein air study. We spent a couple of days in a canyon just like this and for the longest time I've wanted to capture all the things that made this place special to me, but I couldn't figure out how. Recently while revisiting some of the photos I took along with the paintings I brought back from the area, I found my inspiration and it all came together.
I titled this painting "Beneath The Glory" because in the land of canyons, the towering landscapes around you can make oneself feel so small. The sheer glory of the rocks tower above these deep canyons, where water, wildlife, and nature thrives.
I painted this in oils on canvas mounted to cradled board. It measures 30x40".

The more I see artists paint with oils, the more I want to paint with oils. But for now, it is acrylics for me. This painting is stunning. I love it when an artist is speechless of their creativity.
I was just saying to myself while watching this that I've never once gave painting with oils & I may end up liking it much better than I do acrylics, who knows.🤷 I am going to have to trying it some day, & hopefully soon.

I've heard that Chuck's paintings in these videos are not actually time lapsed, but are the actual speed that he paints, plus, he wills the brush to just change colour.

Chuck, this is one of my favourites, for sure! It's absolutely astounding!!! There's an enchantment to it that goes beyond description. Those "writhing" trees, without leaves, give a life to it that I've never seen a "dead" tree do in a painting. The only way I could attempt to describe the effect is it's like a "journey to Oz" feeling. Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!
Thank you Mark! Yes I agree, those trees out there are something else. We have a lot of cottonwood trees by us but they just grew different there, beautiful. And I actually believe they were mostly all alive still, just middle of winter for them. Appreciate it!!
