I don’t usually beat up my watches but I am a very active person and I don’t baby them. Thank you for being the sacrificial lamb for all of us (potential) Ultra 2 owners.
Hi. You say the reason for the upgrade was the “increased durability” of the Black-2 but at the same time you say the Original-1 has no scratches in 2 years of use. So basically the Original is not giving you any reason to be changed. Be honest. You just love that black color!!! 😄 I do too 👍🏼👍🏼
As a watch guy, I can tell you that buying the black ultra for "scratch resistance" is the big mistake. Yes, the DLC coating is more durable than bare titanium but it's only a mater of time before you hit it or scrape it hard enough to penetrate the coating and reveal the bare titanium underneath which will cause the mark to show far than it would on the bare titanium model. The bare titanium model will age far better than the black variant. Apple uses grade 5 ti so it's durable enough on its own. Buy the black ultra 2 because you like the look or else you will be dissapointed if you are expecting something that will not show wear.
You're really right! I was at the Apple Store Dubai today, and there were a lot of scratches on the Ultra 2 black ones presented, the natural one wins a lot
As someone who owns black DLC coated titanium pocket knives I can tell you this….the reason why you can rub off the marks is because what you’re rubbing off is the element of the surface the watch has come into contact with. So what you’re essentially doing is rubbing off the concrete or rock off the watch. DLC is the best finish you can get on titanium and stands for diamond like coating for a reason. It increases the hardness of the titanium. Hope this helps.
@@GodOfWar109 if you’re implying I don’t use mine well you’re wrong. Also, I never said DLC is invincible. Secondly, the quality of the dlc application can vary. @ Ah! Since this is new for you I'd try slowly increase the time I wear the watch and let your body get used to it. Wearing it loose is probably not a great idea as it can mess up readings like heat rate. Also, Idon't know what watch band you got. But a lot of folks find the trail loop band real comfortable as it is infinitely adjustable and breathes better reducing the chance for skin irritation. The trail loop band for the Ultra is very similar to the sport loop band for non-Ultra watches. That's the watch band I use. I also give the underside of the watch a cleaning fairly often to also reduce the chances of skin irritation. I just spray some eye glass cleaner on the backside and wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. Takes about 15-30 seconds. This is more important in the summer when sweat collects under the watch face. Good luck!

I work around metal so the watch has seen its fair share of dings, and bumps, against those surfaces. But like I said it’s in perfect condition.

My ocd couldn’t handle it as it always looked like it needed cleaning, also or tho the black looks cool the dull Matt finish just doesn’t have the same expensive high end premium appeal as the original natural version
Don’t have a black Ultra 2, but I do have the Titanium one… Although I agree with you that the black finish is likely strong enough for day to day wear, I’d say that drop, and the scratches on that lower left corner, although small, are MORE noticeable that scratches of similar depths/sizes on the original Titanium ones. It would bother me more as it would be more noticeable. I’ll be sticking to the natural Titanium for sure. Thanks for the video!
I used several Apple Watches, all got scratched quickly till I got the Original Ultra two years ago. The Ultra stayed in pristine condition with no blemishes or scratches in spite of wearing it day and night. I only take it off to charge for half hour every 2 days.
Thanks for this video, definitely makes me feel better about wearing an expensive watch like this and worrying about damaging it. I did put a screen protector on mine anyway.
Had the OG AWU for over a year and sold it with 100% battery health and not a single mark on it after using it and it getting beat up every day. Now I'm ready to buy another and the black is absolutely gorgeous but if i got a single scratch on it my OCD would go crazy seeing it all the time as it would stand out against the black. Think the sensible choice would be stick with a not so sexy natural titanium AWU 2
After 1 year + of wearing Apple watch ultra 1 I can tell you that it's durable. I have no cover and did a lot of activities and never took it off from my wrist. So I was swimming in a sea for a month and no harm happened. Only salt deposits on the device was annoying. Old watch 4 was much better due to curve shape. On Apple watch ultra salt is everywhere on the screen rants(titanium case is a little higher than the screen) and it looks very bad. You need to keep in mind to always clean it afterwards. So far this is the best disadvantage of Ultra design. Have no screen scars and only one small one on titanium frame(made by spigen case which I immediately threw away).
The question is not how durable the coating is, but rather how durable the material underneath the coating is. If the material underneath is significantly softer, as is the case with titanium, the coating above will "break" like a hard eggshell when it is subjected to stress at certain points. This is why we talk about the eggshell effect. Some manufacturers of high-quality watches therefore coat the stainless steel before coating it (ice hardening, for example). These watches are then almost indestructible. The Ultra 2 will scratch very quickly and you will see the silver titanium underneath. My own Ultra 2 in Black scratched after the first 12 hours.
This video was the deciding factor in upgrading to the black ultra 2. Glad i didnt upgrade. the scratches are more noticeable on the black one than my raw titanium one. Thanks so much for this video.
I've got an ultra 2 and definitely put it through its paces. What I've noticed about the finish is that the titanium is very strong but the textured finish will mark. Scratches don't penetrate but they do blemish the texture. I figure the black will be similar unless you really bang it or drag it across a sharp object. I bet if you take the black ultra 2 and drag it across rough natural granite it will destroy it. Rock Climbing, Mountaineering, Scrambles any sport wear your using your hands against real rock you will have a problem. Drop test is one thing but accidentally sliding the finish against something like a cliff or if you fall while hiking and it hits a rock while you save your face from the same fate. I highly doubt it'll hold up to that.
I was a little disappointed by your results. That outer edge of the bezel is just too vulnerable. I wonder if the sapphire crystal that curves around the standard Apple Watch design isn’t more resistant to damage. My DLC-coated black titanium Apple Watch 6 Edition is just about flawless after 4 years-but it has no sharp edges.
Fantastic video, and I was hoping to see some real life testing of the black Ultra 2. Nice as the black is, my thoughts would be that when you do majorly ding it/scratch it, and remove the black coating and reveal the natural titanium below, the scratch/ding is going to be WAY MORE noticeable, and this video proves my thoughts correct. Admittedly your high quality camera and macro will make the scratches look worse than they are. Definitely think I will be sticking with the natural titanium for this reason and also, I just find that the natural titanium colour looks more premium in my opinion. It's great that we now have more than one colour choice for the Ultra.
my series 7 that i’ve used for 3 yrs has been banged up like crazy, so many scratches. thk u for this video becos i rly wanna get a more durable watch!
Pre-ordered my Watch Ultra 2 (Dark) & got it on the 20th. However, I was a bit apprehensive using it out of the box, without any screen protector on, but I must say your video saved the day for me. Thanks a lot for such an amazing video, Cheers 👍

I have the Ultra 1 in natural Titanium and the black Ultra 2. The first one I was wearing for 2 years nearly everyday and it looks pretty new. Some little scratches are visible if you look very very very very close to it. But thats no reason to complain about. About the black one I can not say a lot, because I’m just wearing it for a few days only. Anyhow it looks to be also very stable against scratches and bumps. It seems, that Apple did a good job.
Secondly, I have a DLC coated staccato P handgun.. super durable and don’t care much about scratches anyways.. but it keeps the bulk barrel strong as shit and it helps it cool faster for follow ups and long range time.
I have the raw and it’s had a few knocks but you wouldn’t know as with a fine grade sand you can buff the marks out. Only think u need to do is not go to fine or you will polish it. 1000p orbital sanding disk does it for me
With DLC coating, basically its true. The same as the original color. That means, if it’s got a damage that bite into the maretial, the black one will reveal the titanium color while the titanium will be invisible from a distance. Scratch wise I have a bunch of DLC black Ti EDC. They can’t be scratched even when I throw them in the toolbox.
Upgraded from a natural titanium Ultra which looks practically new following daily wear for over a year to the satin black Ultra 2. After a week I’ve already got two scratches: one and the same location from your drop and one on the side. Don’t even know how they got there. Will be returning the black and going back to titanium.
I had the U2 in satin black and within the first 24 hours I hit it against a metal door at work and it put a permanent scratch in the finish near the top of the watch where the band connects. I tried everything hoping it was just a paint transfer but it appears to be a scratch through the finish.

I have the Ultra 2 black. Very disappointed how easily the finish marred from literally a brief “brushing” with a D-ring at the gym doing single arm cable pulls. Nothing I did would hide it - so now I keep a black plastic bezel protector on it.
Finally, the video I've been waiting for since the black AWU2 was released! Thank you!! For me what has scrached up my finishes have been concrete. Reaching for something against the wall of my garage which is cinder block in one case, and grabbing from a stack of roof tiles in another.
I'm going to stick with the raw titanium version; my tactix has some wear on the bezel and I can only deduce that they AWU2 in satin black will gain some wear in its lifetime.
I had my ultra 2 satin black out of the box for 5 minutes and the bezel got scratched setting it up… didn’t drop it or anything. I decided to return for the natural finish.
i have a series 6 since 2021 and it's still in great conditions. the screen has some deep scratches from a fall during downhill riding but nothing serious. the chassis doesn't have one single scratch (i sleep with it, i workout with it, i swim with it, i do downhill riding, i've hit so many rocks but it's still in great conditions)

Nice vid! That scratch on the black ultra case would kinda bug me. Natural finish works for me.
If I close my eyes, I see Jerry "Zack" Everything doing jumping jacks with knives in his pocket from tomorrow on 🤣
Thanks for this video, definitely makes me feel better about wearing an expensive watch like this and worrying about damaging it.
Awesome brother!!!!!!!!!!! been waiting for this test!
Just picked up one of these for myself (in black) and I love it so much. A real upgrade from my Series 6 stainless steel!
I had to close my eyes watching those drops...hahah Thank you for the video!
My black ultra is arriving tomorrow. So it’s kind of too late to see the scratch test now 😆
And yet here I am. Watching it anyways 😂
and what do you say now after 2 months? Do you have many visible scratches
@ I swing my arms around and knock my watch a lot, especially at work. No visible damage as of yet.
@@devALLjapan and you still happy with black ? I've had it since the day before yesterday and I think it's really nice in black but the scratches Scare me
I have both and they have been great no issues at all
I have an AWU 1, had it for two years now, holding steady with no scratches. I’ve crashed on my MTB, fallen on a trail run, constantly bang it on the wall, all good.
The black one looks good! I was wondering about the black holding up! Thanks for the video!
Great video man! I no what to avoid with my black ultra 2😅
Finally a video where you can see what the durability is of the ultra watch 2 BLACK
The treatment impregnates the color into the surface the metal. That’s why it doesn’t scratch like you would think.
Just opened mine today, its looks so good with dark green alpine band. Thanks for your video🎉
Sir, you deserve all the likes. Thank you for doing this!
Great tests, fyi to the hesitant ones "get a case after you buy any apple product". It will ease all your burdens!
This is the single most valuable video for the black Ultra I've seen so far! Thank you!

I think the marks on the Ultra 2 Black are much more noticeable.
Giving the people what they want! Nice. Also - dude you’re looking jacked! Any videos for your non running workouts coming anytime soon?
I got the satin black watch and was super edgy about it but now I can wear it with more confidence thanks to this review ✊🏽
Glad it was helpful!
Only bad thing about the black is finger prints ! Its an absolute magnet for them 🙈
Good test thanks.
I have the ultra watch 1st gen. Hasn’t broke yet, have apple care on it
Thank you for all of this!!!! Not all heroes wear capes.
The video we’ve been waiting for 🙌
Upgraded from a natural titanium Ultra which looks practically new following daily wear for over a year to the satin black Ultra 2.
Nice Test.! 👍🏻
Apple had two years to design a good coating. And they did it. 🙌🏻
Love my Watch Ultra satin black.!
Bro? Did you see 6:10
Dope DJI Mic. I like your Vids bruh.
Wait.. are you saying it isn't normal for me to smash my devices with a hammer or purposely bend my devices, doh! Good Video and I appreciate the real world scenarios. Something that most of us can relate to.
Great to see real life tests. 🐞
You are Amazing for this bro. Much respect! 🙌🏼
Legend as always! Great video my man!
Came in less than a minute lets go!
Thank you for this real world test! I got the black Ultra 2 it is the color I’ve been waiting for!! 😂 I’ve been babying it so it's good to know I don’t have to 💯
But I mean it still scratched. That scuff would drive me nuts. Sticking with my ultra 2 regular titanium
It did, but it was pretty minor. Realistically anything with a finish is going to scratch including the Garmin in this video.
thank you! been waiting for this!
Yes! I always bump concrete or brick walls. Sometimes door frames / door knobs too!
Very helpful review Dave, thanks.
Really? Interesting!
Same thing happened to me. With normal wear I’ve already got visible scratches. I’ll be returning for a natural.
You do realise that is impossible right? Something cannot just scratch all by itself.
I’m a mechanic and work with my watch on and I’ll stick to natural titanium because it’s a lot of metal to metal contact lol
I have the satin black and on day 2 I barely touched a storm door and I can see some small scratches on the top of the bezel.
Ouch!
Thank you for this test mate!
It would be interesting to see if the new Milanese band scratches the DLC coating of the watch. That has been a problem in the past.
i have a series 6 since 2021 and it's still in great conditions. the screen has some deep scratches from a fall during downhill riding but nothing serious. the chassis doesn't have one single scratch (i sleep with it, i workout with it, i swim with it, i do downhill riding, i've hit so many rocks but it's still in great conditions)
