    Hi Nancy! I suggest you remove the mesh screening that you put up to protect your cats and your fingers as it will affect the amount of air removed etc. Instead get a small piece of fencing, sometimes called rat wire, it's smaller than chicken wire. This rat wire has wires going up and down, and across creating little square holes just a little bit more than 1/4". This would not cause resistance with the air you're fan is trying to pull out and it would allow your fan to do its job without having this mesh work against it. I'm sure you can find someone you know to give you a little piece of this wire netting/fencing. Almost everyone has a bit of it stuffed in their garage. There are so many uses for this wire every hardware place sells this.

    Thanks Nancy! Perfect timing ! Ventilation is the issue which is presently preventing me from starting silversmithing. This looks doable for me. Appreciate you!

    Nancy, you ROCK!! I've been using a window fan that is installed a lot like your window vent is installed (directions on your site), but it's not really doing the job. it's better than a poke in the eye, but that's about it. Now I can fix it mo bettah!!

    Thank you so very much Nancy. This is very timely for me as this week I have been researching ventilation and anything I could afford didn't pull enough and those that pulled enough were way out of my price range. This is perfect!

      Glad this worked for you Why! Your issues were the same as mine. Boy, did I watch a lot of videos trying to figure out a solution. I'd still like a heftier CFM rate but, then the cats might get sucked out of the house. Or on the positive side, maybe all their fur could have gotten sucked out. Hmmm...maybe a fur ventilator is in my future.

      oooh, if you ever get that fur ventilator working, you MUST do a video on that! I need a whole house size!

    From watching the video I can see that the extractor definitely helps with the smoke. I’m thinking about using this for my home nail salon, but wondering if it will also help suck the acrylic odor out of a room?

    Looks like a good system. I wonder if it would be practical to have a filter or five, for anyone that cant have a hole in their wall. Test ask the tomato growers I guess.

    I have looked on Facebook page and website and cannot find the list of supplies to make the ventilation system.
    The fan is Ventech, 440 CFM... having a difficult time locating one to the specifications stated on video. Will look some more because I plan on making one. Thanks.

    Hi. Thank you for the video. I am setting up a garage studio in my home. I don't anticipate doing this more than once or twice a week for a couple of hours. Do you feel that amount of use warrants a fume extractor?

    Hey Nancy, thank for sharing this. I'm in the process of getting a shop set up and was wondering about ventilation for your pickle pot and that tabletop furnace/kiln. Do you vent those as well? Why or why not? I just assumed that I would need to set up ventilation for the soldering area, pickle pot, kiln (which I don't own yet and is really something I will get a bit further down the road) and polishing motor area. Thanks in advance, and thanks for sharing your metalworking videos, I've been getting a lot of good information from your site and your youtube videos!

    Range vent. You can get one from a house that's being remodeled. It takes a bit of asking/dumpster diving, but it's free!

      Great thought Oh Captain, my Captain. I had one of those in my old studio. Great minds think alike! What I like about this system though is that it doesn't take up that much wall space 'cause I have plans for a shelf on that thar back wall. Thanks for the tip! Appreciate it mucho!

      Depends on what you're doing.
      There are no fixed rules at the hobby level Just good ideas, and sensibility. :)
      I would think, if you're asking the question, then you might be right. Especially when it concerns safety.

    Nancy, reducing the outlet diameter will reduce the efficiency of the exhaust fan. Nice solution.

    Great solution to a problem. How it working almost 6 months later? What about fumes that are combustible, my husband mentioned that they can cause a fire when there's spark. Separate electrical box.

      Rose Stewart-Fram The fan is working great! The screen is covered with cat fur so, must clean! I don't know about flammable fumes. I would have to do some homework on that. If you'ld like me to, drop me an email at Nancy.LT.Hamilton@gmail.com. Thanks so much!

    Hi Nancy - That's a cool setup. Would one need such a ventilation system when using a soldering iron with odorless flux?

    • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
      @NancyHamiltonJewelry  9 років тому +1

      Yep, yep and yep! Dem dar fumes are not good for you - no matter where they are coming from. Read the MSDS on your product. The ones I checked out had: ZINC CHLORIDE and AMMONIUM CHLORIDE. Quote from 1 MSDS: " INDIVIDUALS WITH PRE-EXISTING LUNG DISEASES MAY HAVE INCREASED
      SUSCEPTIBILITY TO THE TOXICITY OF PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO ZINC CHLORIDE." Here's a quote from another MSDS: "CHRONIC= BLEEDING GUMS, CONJUNCTIVITIES, LARYNGITIS, SKIN PUSTULES, HEADACHE, HEIGHT LOSS, AND ANEMIA. ACUTE.= NAUSEA, VOMITING, DIARRHEA, WITH MUCOUS AND BLOOD, HEPATITIS AND HEMORRHAGIC NEPHRITIS MAY ALSO OCCUR " Also, one needs to know what the solder is spitting out into the air. Some solders have lead (among other chemicals) in them which, as you know, are very bad fumes to be inhaling. There are other, darling little pollutants/irritants/killers, hidden away in the ingrediants area of the packaging. Check out this website: www.sentryair.com/solder-fumes.htm. Most of my research was done watching videos and reading blogs from the circuit board community who use soldering irons! They all discussed ventilation! Great question Scraps! Thanks so much for bringing this issue up. See my webpage on Safety: www.nancylthamilton.com/resources/safety-in-the-jewelry-studio/ventilation/. I've added a special thanks to you.

      Well now I'm really glad I asked. I've been gathering my supplies but haven't actually started using them. A good ventilation system is now in order. Those are some nasty ailments to avoid. I've been watching your videos for a while. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

    Also your screen looks too fine, that also reduces the efficiency, just use a screen that will stop you from sticking your finger in it or sucking something into the blades. You could put ducting on the inlet to focus the suction end more easily.

    • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
      @NancyHamiltonJewelry  9 років тому +3

      The best thing to keep me from sticking my fingers (and possibly, my head) into the fan would be common sense - which I usually have but can't often remember to employ. Great tips and ideas and I appreciate them Michael. Thank you.
